We love the positive attitude as well as the focus on techniques and respect. My Granddaughter loves attending and loves the challenges. We have tried another dojo and it pails in comparison. Sensi Ed maintains focus while challenging and encouraging his students. Thank you!

We can’t say enough great things about Idaho Shorin-Ryu. Our son has grown tremendously—not just in his karate skills, but in confidence, strength, discipline, and leadership. Watching him develop into a strong, capable young man has been truly inspiring. These are lifelong skills that extend far beyond the dojo, and we are incredibly grateful for the positive impact this experience has had on him. Thank you, Sensei Russell!

The experience my boys have had with Sensei Russell has been incredibly awesome. Sensei Russell is an incredible teacher. He has taught my boys not just karate but also how to be responsible and basic self defense. He is firm and strict but also caring and patient. He knows your kids well enough to know what’s their strengths and weaknesses and works with them.

Karate with Sensei Russell is one of the most rewarding activities you can do for your child! Sensei Russell is an incredible teacher. He is firm, fun, disciplined, and genuinely helps each kiddo become the best version of themselves because he deeply cares about every single one of his students. I signed my 5 year old up for what I thought was going to be just a fun activity, but has taught him so many invaluable life lessons at such a young age like discipline, respect, hard work, and achieving goals. I could not recommend this program enough.

These karate classes are amazing! Over the years, we have tried a handful of dojos and been disappointed. Then we found Sensei Ed Russell and Idaho Shorin-ryu. Four of our children have been attending their homeschool class for almost 2 years now. The level of karate instruction is above any we have ever seen.
Unlike other studios, where I felt like you just had to pay and show up to advance in belts, they advance based on mastery of the skills. Our children are learning how to protect and defend themselves while also learning to be kind, respectful, and stand up for others.
Our children have thrived, including my neurodivergent kiddos. We were so impressed, that my husband and I joined in too. The kids and I are in their homeschool family class and my husband attends the adult night class.
This is also the least expensive martial arts class we have ever encountered. It is half what we were paying at other studios! I am still so surprised that we pay what we do for such quality and comprehensive karate classes for our children and ourselves.
It is probably obvious at this point, but we think, hands down, Sensei Ed Russell and his classes at Idaho Shorin-ryu are the best out there. Whether it's for kids, adults, or whole family instruction, this is the dojo and the Sensei you have been looking for.

My experience with Sensei Ed has been nothing short of outstanding. As a parent, it's always a challenge to find an instructor who can engage young children while also teaching them discipline, respect, and self-confidence. Sensei Ed has mastered this balance.
From the very first class, it was clear that Sensei Ed has a natural ability to connect with children. His teaching style is patient, encouraging, and structured, yet still fun and full of energy. He ensures that each child feels supported, regardless of skill level, which helps build a positive learning environment. Sensei Ed emphasizes not just karate techniques, but also important life lessons like perseverance, kindness, and respect for others.
The homeschool classes are always well-organized, and Sensei Ed is great at keeping the kids engaged with a mix of drills, games, and focus exercises. It’s clear that he is passionate about karate and about helping kids grow both physically and mentally.
My boys have developed not only stronger karate skills but also more confidence, focus, and respect for others. I highly recommend Sensei Ed to anyone looking for a karate teacher who truly cares about the development of their students!

My 8-year-old daughter had asked to take karate for about a year and we finally joined Caldwell park and rec with Sensei Ed. My daughter absolutely loves the classes. I have since joined her in a parent-child class which is so much fun, a great workout, and good for mental discipline. Sensei Ed offers homeschool hours as well as regular hours which is very convenient. The cost is very affordable too.

I can't recommend Sensei Ed and this dojo enough! From the moment we walked through the doors, it was clear that this place is more than just a karate school—it's a place where kids learn important life lessons. Sensei Ed is an exceptional teacher who fosters a positive environment while setting high standards for his students. He pushes his students to not only improve their karate skills but also to become better, more respectful individuals in all areas of their lives. His guidance goes beyond the dojo, teaching lessons that resonate with us every day. We feel incredibly lucky to have found such a dedicated and respectful instructor who truly cares about his students' growth. If you're looking for a karate facility that nurtures both discipline and character, this is the place!
