Staff and facility 5 stars. Gave me a quick lesson on rope usage and safety for helping my son climb on belay, and they were very patient and kind with a middle aged dad and two 10 yr olds, all of us new to climbing.

We celebrated our son's birthday here with about 20 of his nearest and dearest friends, and Hunter and the team did an absolutely incredible job of hosting us, training the boys, and overseeing the fun that was had.
The facility itself is awesome with many bouldering and belay options, and the team made it an even better and more memorable experience by going over the top to help the boys, answer questions, and ensure a fun but safe environment.
Highly recommend The Commons on many fronts!!!

Love the yoga classes here! The most affordable yoga in the valley. All of the teachers are so great, and they have lots of styles of yoga for all skill levels. Multiple classes a day at different times. Toproping is also great here but mostly I come for yoga!

Great gym, been coming here 2+ years. Top rope routes are fantastic. Some may say their routes are sand-bagged but I say they are perfect for getting you ready for routes outside that are usually way more sand-bagged. Bouldering section is small, only major reason I canβt give it 5 stars. If you like bouldering, go to Asana. Vertical View is definitely taller for some longer top rope routes and has a bigger bouldering section but the routes feel easier than at the Commons, which is why I prefer the Commons. The weight lifting area is decent but could use an update with newer equipment. Overall canβt complain too much, friendly staff..nice private member hours..great routes. Would recommend a visit to anyone visiting out of town.

Convenient hours and fair pricing for access to climbing, fitness area, as well as yoga. Yoga classes are challenging and there is a bulletin to post a request for a climbing partner which worked well for me.

Not a bad place but the front desk dude with the glasses was really pretty rude and felt clicky. Not a good look as itβs the first thing you see coming in the door.

Visited from out of town andβ¦ yikes. First off, the gym requires the use of GriGri belay devices on every rope. Each top rope is pre-tied with a figure-eight knot and permanently clipped into a supplied GriGri. In my opinion, this is a terrible practice. Climbers should be tying their own knotsβevery time. Pre-tied ropes like this can lead to inattentive belaying and a false sense of security. You're forced to trust both the knot and the device, sight unseen.
I personally prefer using my ATC and wasn't allowed to. Not being given a choice is frustrating and, frankly, unnecessary. Mandating GriGri use and locking people out of their own gear preferences is just bad gym policy. I've been climbing since 2008 and never been to a gym that has this setup; an untied hanging rope should be standard and allow climbers to learn how to use the equipment by letting them do it!
The route grades seemed a bit sandbagged from what I'm use to. Different style compared to where I mostly climb in Colorado.
On another note, the gym leans hard into a particular cultural vibe. If you're bringing kids, just know the space is covered in rainbow flags and heavy-handed LGBTQ+XYZBYR blah blah messagingβvery much part of the overall atmosphere. A lot of the staff give off that classic social justice warrior energy: the type who rant about capitalism and billionaires on Twitter via their iPhone, connected to Starlink, while sipping a turmeric ginger latte from Starbucks.
Consider this your heads-up.

From the moment I first called The Commons Climbing Gym, the staff was incredibly responsive and friendly. Kellina, in particular, was amazingβso helpful and informative. She got our Girl Scout troop scheduled right away and was patient and cheerful every time I reached out with follow-up questions, whether by phone or email.
The gym graciously welcomed our group of 11 Girl Scouts and 10 moms on a Tuesday afternoon, and we couldnβt have asked for a better experience. As soon as we walked in, the entire staff made us feel at home. They got us all geared up, gave us a thorough tour of the facility, and clearly explained how everything works.
What really stood out was the extra effort the staff made to help our group. Two employees even took the time to teach us moms how to belay the girls safely, certified that we knew what we were doing, and then set the girls loose to climb. The girls had an absolute blast, and we were invited to stay as long as we liked.
Most of us were novices, but the staff made everyone feel comfortable, welcome, and supported throughout the entire visit. We had called around to several places, and The Commons Climbing Gym gave us the best response by farβand Iβm so glad we chose them. The price for our group was incredibly reasonable, much less than I expected.
Everyone left excited to return, whether with their families or on their own. I highly recommend The Commons Climbing Gym for individuals, families, and groups. It's a fantastic space with exceptional staff and a welcoming atmosphere. Weβll definitely be back!

Fantastic rope setting that is the closest I've seen to outdoor grading. Not reachy (I'm 5'4"). We go to rock gyms all over the country and this is one of our favorites for ropes. Didn't boulder much here so can't comment on that part. Keep up the setting that works for short and tall people! So welcoming for beginners. They have areas to practice clipping anchor setups, doing a multipitch, and a fake rock wall that simulates outdoors for new folks.

I love this gym! First off, the staff is absolutely amazing, knowledgeable, and welcoming. There is a strong sense of community that is lead by the staff and owners that carries through to the climbers. Everyone is super friendly! They have routes for every level and some really fun "natural" features to play with. I love the challenging overhangs. I feel like they do a good job preparing climbers to go outdoors compared to other gyms. They have great community events such as the Adult Climbing Club which includes an instructor to give you tips and ends with a local hard cider...can't beat that! Highly recommend

I wish I could give more than 5 stars! This was the single best climbing gym experience Iβve ever had. They have a stellar section that feels like real rock (it is concrete or something rather than the plastic walls), the route setting is so interesting, the staff is more than friendly, and their gym section is all there. I love climbing here. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, and are always willing to talk about climbs, cruxes, or whatever you want - so that's a major plus. Then the climbs themselves are great - lots of varied options, tons of lead climbing available throughout, some awesome splitter cracks which are great practice, and they don't really suffer from grade inflation like other gyms do which is nice. And I really appreciate their commitment to the health and safety of their members. Climb here!
April 2022 Edit:
Dropping the 5 stars down to 4. This place is still awesome, and the staff are wonderful, but there's been some minor changes (for worse) since the last time I reviewed. A big one is the pricing. Prices skyrocketed in November of 2021, especially for my preferred method, the punch pass, which essentially doubled in price. Kind of forces you to either not climb there or become a member which makes it hard to be a punch pass guy who likes to climb at other gyms too but not pay multiple memberships. I don't really understand what the gym has added that warranted such a massive price increase...
My second complaint is that they no longer prorate the end of memberships. When you sign up to be a member they still prorate the beginning, so you don't pay for the half a month that you were not a member. Great. But when you cancel, they don't give you your money back for the remainder of the month you won't be climbing. In the past they did this for me when I injured my finger and couldn't climb anymore, which was great and made sense. But now, a year later I find myself moving from Boise and they won't prorate the end of my membership so I have to pay for 3 weeks of dues when I won't even be in the area. Lame. Gym is still awesome, the roped climbing is great, and the staff is sweet, just be aware of their unfortunate new policies with the $$$

Really lovely experience all around. The staff was super knowledgeable and kind. Quick belay training at the beginning was very helpful! We climbed for a few hours and had a wonderful time. Visiting from out of town. A great looking gym, but I went to climb and after a quick facility tour I climbed for 10 minutes but I received a phone call and had to leave in a rush because of an emergency. I asked if I could use my day pass tomorrow instead of today since I had only done a few Boulder problems and was told nothing could be done. I understand business is business, but I was shocked at the lack of customer service and unwillingness to be flexible given a less than ideal situation.

In just a few words, this gym is so friendly, helpful, affordable, and genuinely care about helping you have fun and improve as a climber. My wife and I have been climbing here since they first opened earlier this year. They gave us a great couples rate, and us no issues at all when the lockdown happened and we needed to freeze our account for a few months. There were no fees or hassles, just friendly and understanding service. My wife is also pregnant and the gym purchased their own pregnancy harness for us so that she and other pregnant mothers could still climb without having to make that investment. Thereβs a great weight room which I have used to replace my regular gym membership. They have incredible rope climbing and some solid bouldering as well, but the best is how much they are a βlearn how to climb outside gymβ. They have natural rock walls, lead climbing, and a ledge to learn multi-pitch. Iβll be a happy member here at The Commons for years to come.

You could not find a more welcoming, inclusive staff, something essential to introducing people to a potentially intimidating sport like rock climbing. That tone permeates into the clientele of the gym: incredibly skilled climbers with years of experience sharing climbing tips with people newer to the sport who are trying to figure out if climbing is for them. Blown away by the route options, and the tall height of the walls allows for a really great workout. Hats off to the team who put The Commons together--they've created a physical and cultural environment that could not better support rock climbing locally!
