Super beginner-friendly place with helpful/ knowledgeable staff members! There is a great variety of top rope, auto-belay, and bouldering options. I highly recommend the "learn the ropes" class.

Brooklyn Boulders is such a special place. In a booming metropolis like Chicago, it’s rare to find somewhere that makes you feel grounded, almost zen, in the middle of the city. Even though you’re not technically out in nature, there’s something about climbing rock walls in this earthy, community-focused space that feels like the next best thing.

As someone who feels most at home outside hiking trails, breathing fresh air, and moving through nature, this place gives me that same sense of peace and balance. The staff are incredible; I’m almost always greeted by name and with a smile. And the community is just as great. I’ve met so many genuinely kind, encouraging people here.

I recommend Brooklyn Boulders to everyone I know, whether they’re seasoned climbers or total beginners. It’s one of those rare Chicago gems that feeds both your body and your spirit.

Prices have increased significantly over the past few years, yet membership perks have not improved. Previously, a membership included additional classes at no extra cost, but now those classes are only available at a discounted rate, and there are far fewer options to choose from. While this gym is enjoyable to visit, paying full price is not justified, especially since there are other climbing gyms that offer more climbing options and better amenities for less money.

If you're looking for a great way to get into climbing and / or make new friends, I highly recommended this gym. The bouldering and climbing routes are high quality and approachable to climbers of all skill levels, and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and excited about climbing. The community at bkb is what really sets this gym apart from others in the city; everyone is warm and welcoming, and are very encouraging to others, regardless of how long you've been climbing, or whether or not you're a regular member. It's a nice feeling when a bunch of people cheer you on as you finally finish a hard climb that you've been working on!

One of my favorite places in Chicago. The staff is super friendly and really encouraging- very helpful if you are new and learning to climb. The facility has a community feel to it. Harry taught “The intro to climbing” class and he was a really good instructor. I learned the basics. A good place to spend time with kids and get energy out. They even have a work space which is very useful if you work from home.

The yoga classes are great and climbing after a good stretch is definitely ideal. A hidden gem in the city, if you’re a member they often have wellness activities and many fun things to be a part of. 10/10 recommend 😊

The walls are practically Dual Tex. I have climbed for 5 years now in and out of gyms, outside a bunch and these walls are worse than anything I’ve ever been in. You can’t smear, flag or anything with your feet outside of the actual holds. The boulders are a bit silly because even though you can’t top out they don’t even go up the entire length of the wall.
The overhang boulder routes literally stop 6-10 ft from the top still.
Rethink your gym options; Chicago seems to have plenty of others.

Had been climbing here for 6 years and can’t wait to use up cash on my account and move gym. Staff today were rude to me and my friend. Management is getting worse and worse. Super friendly when you signed up but then difficult to communicate after. Ridiculous and hidden rules (like 2 discounted guest visitors per year compared to other gyms that have 2 free passes per month). Belay routes are updated every half year. They don’t care about your safety: crazy loud party music to attract newcomers at events, but so loud that belayers can’t hear climbers. Complained and was told “maybe not to lead climb?” Guess they only care about their profits, but I’m not paying any more.

I’m an annual member here but I’m not staying because place is mismanaged. What happened today was unbelievable. There’s an event going on and the music was super loud. I went to the front desk and complained about it, asking them to turn the volume down because climbers could not hear the communication with each other, and it’s esp. dangerous for lead climbing. The staff replied to me, maybe you just don’t do lead climbing.

You are a climbing GYM first!

To start off, the vibes are great, just immaculate lol. The gym is well maintained, the people are friendly and respectful. There's a nice study area, bouldering, ropes, turf, a yoga studio, and a weight lifting area. The facility overall is pretty decent. The staff is helpful, and they change out the routes every week. The locker rooms are clean and have a shower. The bonus, and in my opinion the best part, is that they hand out towels like Oprah

BKB has been my happy place for the past 3 years that I've been a member. It's a warm space where I enjoy doing my work, climb, take yoga classes, and lift. The facility is clean and lots of effort is put in to keep it a safe and fun environment.
The community at BKB West Loop makes it a unique gym due to the friendliness of the staff and members. A few staff make this gym an especially nice community to be apart of include Harry, Adam, Jorja, Brody, Jessica, the amazing route setters and front desk workers that out so much effort in making it welcoming for everyone.
Being close distance to my university, UIC, I would say that BKB has been the biggest influence in my college life. I come between classes, early in the morning, and sometimes stay late into the closing where staff is very kind and don't rush me.

I also have to say since I've been at BKB, I've noticed how the youth belay staff are very patient and kind with the students.

BKB is a fantastic gym. The facility has endless resources to help you get back into shape and achieve your fitness goals. But mostly, the staff and members are what make the gym such a hospitable place. People are always supportive and easy going. I recently took a course with Harry who fostered a supportive and uplifting environment for all students. He made us feel comfortable and not intimidated about climbing for the first time. I see him on a regular basis at the gym and he always gives me reassurance. A few of the other staff members have been phenomenal as well. Patrick, Jorja, Indigo, and many more. Check this place out!

I have been emailing to ask for cancellation, but no one responded to me. The staff is very nice but if it requires multiple emails to cancel the membership, I am not sure if this is the best customer services.

Update the review : it looks like the email was in the spam folder. I changed the rating to four as I appreciate the staff. However, their cancellation policy is not flexible. Having to email for customer service is also frustrating.

Only came for bouldering today, and it appeared that there was a comp recently. I did like the space and training areas. There were also summer camps going on, which seems normal for a gym in a more residential area.

The setting felt fine, but I was disappointed to see that the comp boulders were not graded post-comp. Since a huge area was unavailable due to setting (which extended into after-work rush hours), my experience was much less than ideal.

I hope to see more organization as this location is fairly accessible.

The gym staff were nice and friendly and there’s a decently big space. I was there for an event so I didn’t get to use it, but the coworking areas and booths looked really great.

I only did top rope so I can’t speak to the bouldering. The routes were doubled up which is good for saving space, but I find kind of annoying. The walls themselves were slick, so smearing on the walls is much harder/next to impossible. Also there’s a ton of autobelays, so take that as you will (for me it’s a negative). At the event, the music so was so loud that it was nearly impossible to hear my climber/belayer on the ground, which I did not think was great for an event that brought in lots of newbies. Overall the grades seemed a little soft as well.

The lockers and bathrooms reminded me of a high school gym. I would not shower there without bringing my own shower shoes. Also they charge for the towel service for guests.

Overall, an OK gym, but I would only sign up if I lived in the west loop and wanted to rope climb every time I came to the gym.

Not enough v1 and v2 climbing options on the boulder walls. The walls were also overly crowded with holds making it complicated to climb, or figure out where you were going.

The showers had no hot water, although there were signs posted that they needed to fix the boiler. Overall this felt like a more advanced climbers gym and not for beginners. Will try it out again to give them another shot. Very friendly staff.

Brooklyn Boulders is a fantastic climbing gym. It has all the things you'd hope for as a newcomer (welcoming staff, good mix of bouldering & top rope, intro classes) or a veteran (funky boulder problems, fast setting schedule, plenty of lead routes).

But that's not why you should come here.

The thing that sets BKB apart from the other gyms in Chicago is the community. People actually make new friends here. They cheer each other on. They work problems together. They go to dinner after climbing. People do these things at other gyms, of course. But, less so, it seems.

If you already have a group of friends to climb with (go you!), this might not be that important to you. But it's not an exaggeration to say that it changed my life. Climbing at BKB a few times a week helped pull me out of rut in my life when I didn't have many friends or much to look forward to.

So yeah, you can access more gyms if you join First Ascent or Movement. You can save yourself a few bucks, and still climb hard. But, in my opinion, you'll be missing out on the best climbing community in Chicago.

Bonus: Go to the monthly member nights. Thank me later.

Nice little gym with friendly staff and hard problems! I only did the bouldering so this review doesn't include the lead or top rope.
Problems were way harder than at First Ascent- I could do V5s over there but I couldn't send any V4s here. But harder grading is fine if you want to challenge yourself!
The gym had a vintage feel with lots of historic looking furniture which was neat.
Bathrooms and facilities were clean and there was a nice drink machine where you could get different flavored water.

There were some issues with volumes that were fraying and clearly too old to be in use. One red volume had huge splinters peeling off the top and it was dangerous for climbers to be near. Honestly it's the only reason I had to give 4 stars instead of 5. Those volumes need to be replaced.
There were also some large holds set very close to the mats which poses another safety issue for climbers who might fall on them. Especially large holds sticking out beneath a risky or dynamic move set high on the wall. This kind of reckless setting puts climbers at risk and I did fall onto one of them today.
A lesser issue was the cleanliness of the mats and holds- they are coated with chalk and shoe rubber and just need to be dusted off more.

Not only does climbing keep me active but I’ve been able to make some of the best friends - which, let’s be honest, is hard as an adult! This company is taking money from people who asked to cancel their subscriptions. They took 300 $ from me on three month I haven't set foot in this place. They are refusing to refund me that money.
Be very very carful with their subscription methods, I believe they are deliberately making it hard to cancel the fee. Be very carful.

Staff are very rude and insensitive. The intro classes are intended to be for beginners, but the instructors aren't accomodating at all and will shame you in front of everyone if you don't understand their poor instruction. Prices are high and not competitive. Absolutely do not recommend for anyone looking to take classes here.

The bouldering walls have a lot of diversity. Climbers from all backgrounds will get to try out their skills as there’s something for everyone. It’s nice that they have a coworkers area as well as a gym. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful.

Fun climbing area to visit, but the gym upstairs is frequently out of cleaning wipes and hand sanitizer, so not sure how sanitary the equipment is. Locker rooms similarly don't look super clean. Also, on the website it says towel service is included in a day pass, but when you get there they will charge you $2 extra for a gym towel.

The gym is very poorly run and there is a huge disconnect between employees at the gym and corporate. I signed up for their program called 'Beginners to Badass,' which is an intro to climbing. I didn't feel comfortable climbing without some sort of instruction first, so I let them know that I would want my membership to start with that class. The person at the front desk had no problem signing me up and telling me that he'd officially start my membership the following week when they offered the intro class. The day before my class, I get a notification that the class is cancelled because not enough people signed up. I was not able to change this in the app that the company uses, so I called in and asked to be rescheduled and also have my membership start on the new class date.
Fast forward a couple months. I haven't used the gym nearly as much as I thought I would, so I cancel on December 12th. While they were able to sign me up for classes at the front desk, and change my class over the phone, they insisted that the only way to cancel was through email, so that is what I did. 13 days later, I got charged for another month of membership and their claim is that I needed to cancel 15 days in advance.
With my first class being on November 8th, I was assured that would be my start date for the membership. I was charged on Oct 25, Nov 25, and Dec 25th despite clear communication that I wanted my membership to start on the day I took my intro class.
The response time for any type of support is quite slow for only having 2 locations.
I would recommend finding a different gym that is better equipped to provide support, especially if you are new to climbing.

Can't cancel my membership - all I get is a robo-email. Ownership of the gym changed. They don't care about their instructors: keeping the bad ones, and forcing out the good ones. They don't listen to their customers. Go to Movement. Or any other climbing gym.

They do say the west loop is the best loop! Love this place- they have kiddo events, a fitness area, yoga classes, the vast amount of bouldering problems, as well as the phenomenal community they’ve created here! Kudos to Lance and his team!

Chloe is literally the worst employee I've ever encountered at any business, period. Please discipline her for lack of customer service and lack of general ability to politely intact with other humans.

I like the layout of the gym and the height of the walls and all the options but the gym is a little dark ish and music is often very loud - can’t communicate with climbing partners. Also, there is no different price for younger kids, even the student price is quite high comparing to other gyms. The punch passes are also not shareable which is a first after having visited at least 10+ different gyms worldwide.

Decent gym. A little tattered around the edges. Has gotten better in last few years in terms of frequency of new route setting. Good for location but leaves some things wanting. A little problematic for lead climbing as music is often too loud to communicate to climbing partner. I go here because it’s the closest gym not the best one.

Just seems like such a huge waste of space now. I was thinking the day they went up, "What can the lease cost, and how can this business possibly make a profit?? It's got to be well ovet 10k a MONTH, PLUS!" I was right. I miss Treasure Island, who had similar money problems...Gaping holes of retail vacancy for YEARS, isn't the answer, though.

Unless the businesses that ARE there are drug fronts! Then it makes sense, at least...

Gifted a 10 day pass for Christmas a couple years ago. Couldn’t use it much because I was busy with work. Went in the other day to use and and two different employees looked at me like I had two heads when I said I was given 10 day passes: “that’s not a thing.” Later when I was able to get the receipt from the person who gave them to me the one guy said “oh, well those expire after 1 year so you can’t use it.” However, no where does it state this is a policy on their website or on the receipt (which does mention all of their other policies with online sales). They offered to give me back what was paid as credit, but the 10 day pass was 40% off and they didn’t give me credit for 10 days. I then emailed their customer support and never received an answer. There’s plenty of other climbing gym options in the city; you’re probably better off going to one of them instead where you will at least have a chance of an honest encounter.

My daughter and I visited from Cincinnati during a recent trip to Chicago. We were both very impressed! The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The facility was very clean. The routes were graded well and it was clear the setters put a lot of thought and care into hold placement. There were plenty of walls for top rope and bouldering with a wide variety of routes. We will definitely visit again the next time we are in Chicago?

It just hasn’t kept up with other bouldering gyms in the city. There aren’t as many routes, the app isn’t updated, there aren’t many treadmills and I think only one elliptical - and the machines are old, dirty, and kind of junky. The lockers in the bathroom are super tiny (elementary school) and the lights above 2 stalls in the ladies have been out forever making you wonder if it’s clean in there.

Very disappointed in the management of this company. They closed the Lincoln park location just and notified members only 5 days in advance. They also only notified their staff 5 days in advance and didn’t rehire that vast majority of them. That an unacceptable way to treat your staff. I’d suggest going to a different gym there are a lot of them.
