Old school gym with relaxed, ex-bodybuilder owners. Client base skews young and male, but it’s a respectful environment for all types of people and all fitness levels. The equipment is older but well-maintained and carefully curated. The gym is also very clean; I’ve never experienced a hygiene issue.
I’d say that if you know what you’re doing, are self-motivated, and live nearby, it’d be hard to do better than this gym, especially in the area. Just don’t expect fancy amenities: there are just weights, machines, barbells, accessories, and cardio machines.

You would think a popular, high rated gym in the middle of Chicago would have a single functioning treadmill, or at least give your money back when they don’t. This place is a scam.

This was a good place to work out.
If you're staying at The Robey, it's one the best hotel gyms I've ever worked out at, no question.
Powerlifters might find the gym busy and limiting. The three oly deadlift pads they have are great, but they don't have very many rubber plates, and there's a big sign telling you not to drop your bars anyway.
Like most gyms, they also don't have plates under 2.5 lbs (which I found hard to find).
That said, this is a fantastic option if you need to get a heavy workout in while you're traveling, no question. I'll work out here again when I stay here.

Older but functional and practical equipment. I will say though, I would love for the sauna to be fixed. Currently it's permanently out of commission.

The gym has an old-school vibe with plenty of equipment, but the place felt cramped, and I had to wait around 20 minutes just to get on a squat rack. Some of the machines seemed outdated, and a few were out of order, which was frustrating. The staff was friendly enough, but not particularly attentive or helpful. For the price, I expected a better-maintained facility and more available equipment. Might be okay for some, but I don't think I'll be returning.

New to the area and looking for a gym so I stopped by for a tour and was hoping for a trial pass. I was told if I wanted to work out it would be $15 for a day pass, when I declined the day pass and said I’d just take the tour the guy at the desk told me “you can take the tour yourself” and then went back to staring at his phone. The gym itself looked pretty nice and it’s reasonably priced, but the customer service left a lot to be desired.

Good clean gym, great staff. Just wish they had more squat racks, a ton of floor space for machines that I don't think I ever see used and 3 squat racks that are always used up, in a space that could easily accommodate 6 power cages if they went for a more simple type of power cage. Would easily be 5 stars if I didn't always have to wait for you to 20-30 minutes for a squat rack

Love this gym. I’m glad it’s in the neighborhood. Prices are very fair and affordable. It’s not showy and has everything u need to get a great workout in. Love that there’s no sales pitch or agenda. No initiation fees or impossible cancellations. Owner is great too. Better than BAC imo

I have been coming here for a year or so now. Great basic gym with everything you need and helpful staff. Best part is the no-nonsense up front membership payment! No monthly subscriptions needed and no difficult cancellations.

What’s not to love? Cool owner that’s frequently there for convo and advice if you want it, awesome no frills environment, all the equipment you could ever need whether you’re casual or more serious. Old school vibe with iron plates. Been going here coming up on a year and wouldn’t change a thing. Incredibly reasonable rates. Never too packed but never too empty. Best gym ever. Get a membership.

Bucktown Fitness Club offers a no-nonsense gym experience, providing a comprehensive array of equipment essential for a satisfying workout. While the equipment may show its age, it remains impeccably functional. With a reasonable $10 day pass fee, the club spans two floors, with the second floor housing a majority of the cardio machines. The staff's exceptional kindness and assistance make this establishment my preferred choice whenever I return to town.

Great oldschool bodybuilding type gym, could use some updates for some of the equipment but it has everything you need and nothing you don't. A huge plus is they do month to month or multi month packages with no contracts or initiation fee B.S. Great value and great atmosphere.

Great stop. I am just visiting from Houston to see a friend up here in Wicker Park. I just needed a gym for a drop in. This spot was PERFECT. Super affordable compared to other gyms in the area. Plenty of good equipment. No frills option. Staff was super friendly. Definitely recommend to anyone trying to find a spot for a good, traditional workout!

Had/have a membership but have received no updates since the start of COVID. If the gym is going to re-open, if it isn’t, if my membership will still be valid, etc. literally any information. I have left multiple voicemails with no response from the owners. I loved this gym prior to this but the lack of information and communication is unacceptable.

If you're looking for a flashy gym with a yoga studio, spin classes, swimming pool, etc - sorry but you aren't going to find that here. You know what else you're NOT going to find? Pushy sales people trying to exploit your friends, random "maintenance fees" and other unexpected fees, "bros" and other obnoxious people, and overcrowding and inability to use the equipment you need during the hours you ACTUALLY want to work out (like most other gyms in the area).
This gym has everything I was looking for - owners who take pride in their facility, every piece of equipment you'll ever need, EXTREMELY friendly and supportive clientele, and an overall welcoming vibe. I can walk in here anytime, any day, and feel at home while having access to every piece of equipment needed for my routine.
Can't say enough good things about this place - it's helped me immensely during a stressful time in my life and I'll be sure to recommend to others.

This place has all the equipment you need to strength train. Pros: flexible membership without initiation fees, right next to the damen blue line stop, and all the weights you need.
Cons: front desk staff are often unengaged and on their phones or listening to music or on a phone call, some of the equipment is broken (like the calf machine adjustment mechanism is worn down so that it slips, and neither of the stair machines are fully functional)
Overall, great place to be if you're a strength athlete and looking for reasonable gym prices and flexible membership lengths!

Great no-frills gym. Well priced, simple, and has pretty much anything you could need without the contracts and fluff of other nearby gyms. Only gripes are that the hours can be limiting, and they could use a few more squat racks.

I've been a member of this gym for 2 years. If you are interested in strength training with weights, it has everything you need. For cardio workouts, there is never a problem getting a treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike or stair machine. It is owned by a really nice family, has friendly members and is a comfortable place to exercise. There are no classes. No juice bar. No complimentary towel service. But, there is everything you need to get in better shape and lose weight, all at a reasonable price.
