First time at the gym for a Hyrox Sim. Beautiful facility! What stands out to me was that everyone was so incredibly kind and supportive. The members and the coaches were very helpful and encouraging. I will definitely make it back for a drop in!

Chicago Strength has become my main training hub and it’s been worth every session. I joined on their 3-month intro membership and since day one, the coaches, programming, and overall atmosphere have been top notch. I’ve been consistent with my training — hitting 20+ classes across circuits, strength & conditioning, metcons, and HYROX Sundays — and every single one has pushed me in the right direction.

The variety in programming keeps things challenging but balanced: strength sessions have rebuilt my base, circuits and metcons keep my engine sharp, and the HYROX work has carried over directly to my race prep. Tracking my workouts shows just how effective these sessions are — the intensity is always dialed in, but the coaching cues make sure form and progression come first.

I also really appreciate the community vibe. Even with a packed class, you still get attention and encouragement. Plus, the intro deal gave me the flexibility to test consistency and truly see if this was the right fit long-term (it absolutely is).

If you’re looking for a training environment that blends serious strength & conditioning with functional performance, this is the place.

Solid spot for getting after it in Avondale. Dropped $99 on the trial month—unlimited classes, no fob access, but plenty to keep you moving. Tried a couple HIIT sessions and a CrossFit WOD; coaches were on point, pushing you without being overbearing. Place is clean, has showers, and even an infrared sauna. Only gripe? Some classes fill up fast, so plan ahead. Overall, a great gym to get your sweat on.

UPDATE after I personally spoke with owners Tom and Teresa...

They IMMEDIATELY sought me out for details and took action! That's awesome! I want this gym and this couple to succeed. They clearly care about their investment and people's opinions. Somehow the motivation and personal attention is back! They know your name when you walk in and will help to address your needs. They'll motivate you to push through and do your best. And the best of all (for me) is that they pushed back the evening hours! Not only that, they took it upon themselves to contact their members and poll them to see what hours they prefer. It seems that most of us preferred it a little later. The evening classes are full again, and fun! I'm psyched to go back. This place might be pricier than the purple spot down the block, but it's definitely cheaper than any other private gym like this. Give it a try and see if they can't change your mind about it. Thanks Tom and Teresa for hearing us out.

This place has its fun moments and excellent workouts, but it fails hard at some basic things: Instruction, Motivation, Availability.
Some trainers are excellent and will help you to improve or modify your exercises, while most will just say, 'you know your body best, adjust as needed.' That's not helpful. I've personally seen some people doing exercises poorly and the trainer just gave a generic modification for the class and not specific to that student. I'd understand if it was a giant class, but it's usually between 5-10 people per class.
Motivation... There really isn't any. They give you exercises, start a timer, and you go alone. Other gyms for that price will get you pumped and motivate you to push through the set, finish your rep, go harder, achieve your personal goals, etc. Some trainers do this a bit, but not enough to look forward to a class.
If you're a working adult, or have kids, it's hard to get to most of their classes. The early classes are great if you can make it to a 6 or 7 am class, and have enough time after to get ready for work. But the evening classes, well there really aren't many. Three times a week they have a 6pm class, that's it. So if you work until 5-530, it's tough to make it. Now if you're available early in the day ignore this last part, but for most, the hours just aren't good.
Note to owner, have trainers off their phones during sets. It's depressing to be working out and the trainer is ignoring everyone until the beep sounds.
It's a great gym if you're personally motivated. And the CrossFit classes look like a blast. But the bulk of other courses can be a letdown.

I’ve been a member here for the last 4-5 months and have quickly gotten attached to the gym. I previously trained at another CF gym years ago: a life change and temporarily moving out of state had me put off CF training for several years. I eventually moved back to Chicago and by that time I had gained over 50 pounds. I had just gotten engaged with my fiancée and with a wedding date looming, I decided to give CF another shot to help me get back in shape and ready for my big day. I tried out another gym in the area for a trial but did not like it and felt unmotivated to train. I almost gave up on CF until an old training partner and current Chicago Strength Avondale member encouraged me to try out his gym. After my first class here I fell in love with the gym: the workout was intense and left me sweaty and pumped and I loved it! My motivation and desire to train and get fit again came back instantly. I got so hooked that I even convinced my fiancée to join :-) now we both go to the gym together and even experience some major FOMO whenever we miss a day of class due to our work schedule hehehe.

The coaches are very knowledgeable and have helped me improved my form and technique. I’ve dropped over 15 lbs so far since joining and some of my clothes that didn’t fit anymore now fit comfortably again. The 24/7 gym access along with the other amenities are a huge plus. They also offer Strength and Conditioning and Circuit classes (HIIT style) for those who want to ease into a CF Workout class or are not yet ready to work with a barbell. I occasionally take these classes as well whenever I want to switch up my workouts.

I’m so glad and thankful that I found Chicago Strength: a gym that I already consider a second home :-)

I’ve been a member of this gym for at least 1.5 years. The higher cost than the Planet Fitness down the street is well worth it. It’s super clean, modern, has a community feel and has all of the equipment that I need. Having 24 hour fob access is incredibly convenient. I don’t partake in the classes but the open gym times are pretty convenient.

I joined a couple months ago and really like the location. I get 24 hour fob access so it's very convenient. The facilities are very nice for people that enjoy barbell and compound type movements, and the sauna has been fun to try out. Also, every staff member I've met has been incredibly friendly; one of the owners, Tom, was very welcoming as I joined for a trial period initially. Looking forward to getting back into shape here after the past year plus of the pandemic!

Google asked me to update my review - still love the place and the community!

One of the best values if classes motivate you enough to go to the gym. Their membership gives you unlimited access and the routines change daily.

Doors are open 24 hours a day too, and you can throw your music on the speakers when it's just you—just don't be too loud at night.

They've got a challenge package that includes insights from their on-site nutritionist as well.

And don't worry: it's not entirely CrossFit if you don't want. I never actually joined the cult. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I’ve been a member of Chicago Strength for several years, first at their Logan Square location and now at their Avondale location. I love the community feel and the owners and coaches offer a welcoming environment. They make it easy for me to scale my workouts to my abilities. I love the MetCon and Circuit fitness classes. The Avondale gym is a great facility, newly built and new equipment. Highly recommend!

Easily the nicest strength and CF gym I've been in, and that's not even the best part. After injury, the incredible coaches here worked closely with me to help form-correct, and I've seen such incredible progress since then. If you're looking for great coaches, fantastic programming, and an engaging community, this place is amazing. Oh, and the 24/7 access is pretty nice, too.

Nice gym. Dropped in to do Crossfit Open WOD 21.3+4 and the owner Tom was very accommodating.

Gym has great brand new equipment, beautiful Rogue barbells, and polite staff. Tom took a few minutes after the class ended to coach me during my workout as well.
