I had the opportunity to workout at this facility today.

The first thing I noticed was how clean it smelled. To me that is key!

When I went into the locker room and work out areas you can tell they work endlessly to keep it this way!

I was able to use free weights, machines and the track.

Thank you for a great experience!! I can’t wait to return.

Unprofessional behavior from a trainer. I was using a bench when the trainer and her client set up directly in front of me because their mirror view was obstructed—even though an open bench was available on the other side. When I politely asked them to move to that open bench, they sighed, scoffed, and told me to move instead.

As a person of color, the double standard was hard to miss. And this isn’t an isolated incident — I’ve noticed similar complaints in other recent reviews. It’s clear management needs to take a hard look at the kind of “professionals” they’re hiring.

Edit: another ridiculous interaction. The membership services lady (not the check-in team) acts like she owns the entire building. Every time I’ve interacted with her, she communicates in these condescending facial expressions that make you feel like you’re inconveniencing her just by asking a simple question. The manager that morning wasn’t any better.

Honestly, I’ve had better customer service at fast-food restaurants. The staffing choices here are getting wild — almost hilarious if it wasn’t a place we pay a premium for.

Disappointed because we had high hopes! Brought the whole family in at 3:30 on Sunday, and were told we couldn’t be shown the club because the tour team had all left for the day. We even offered to just walk around ourselves, but that option was declined. We were confused because we could see five folks who were behind desks in the member service center, but alas - no member service could be found.

My review is obviously based on the service! Not the facility which as far as I can tell is lovely.

Really want to love this place, but they make it difficult. Facilities are definitely good, probably unmatched in the city. But they way oversell their memberships. The gym is borderline unusable at peak times, and with the current renovations, having to queue for a shower after a workout is common. And then there's the upcharging for everything. Parking? Costs extra. Tennis? Extra. Food and drinks at the club restaurant? Not competitively priced at all.

I definitely enjoy some of the facilities (pools, co-working space), but for the price I expected better.

Edit: dropping this to one star. If you lift weights and can't get here at non peak hours, the gym is not fit for purpose. I'm routinely having to abandon my workout to go walk on the treadmill instead, because there's nothing available in the weight room. If not for the giant initiation fee I paid earlier this year, I'd cancel my membership.

It's a wow, huge, and high-end gym. All the amenities are available at your convenience—a vast swimming pool, spa, coffee shop, and apparel shop. Magnificent view in the city while running on the track. There is a variety of exercise equipment available. So many locker rooms, nice showers, sauna, and an elegant dressing room. Highly recommended.Great place.

My boyfriend and I came to the club on guest passes and parked in the garage. We read the sign carefully, and it said a $50 charge applies if you leave the Club without your car. Since we stayed the whole time, we thought we were following the rules.

After being there a little over 6 hours, we were told we’d be charged $50s at the pay kiosk. We went to the desk to have the amount corrected per what we thought the signage explained. We were told to speak with a manager. When he came over, he immediately had an attitude. We explained how the sign was misleading, and instead of listening, he talked down to us and tried to make us appear unintelligent — even saying no one else had ever misread it before. Felt as though I was getting mansplained.

Both my boyfriend and myself work in hospitality, so we understand how important it is to treat guests with respect. Unfortunately, that wasn’t our experience here. I highly recommend this gentleman finds a new profession outside of customer care relations.

Really disappointed by how dismissive and unkind the interaction was. We were viewing in hopes to possibly transfer from the other local Luxury gym and this was enough to say no.

The man that was asked to leave the club was not just wearing a shirt with a Palestinian flag - his shirt had a clenched fist with the word "RESIST" - obviously referring to the barbaric atrocities of October 7th - everyone needs to see the unfathomable videos of that day joyously taken by the Palestinians themselves - then you will all understand that RESIST means the destruction of an entire nation!

I’ve been to East Bank Club in Chicago, and honestly, it is not worth the steep price tag. The membership fees and service costs are way overpriced compared to what you actually get in return. For a place that markets itself as exclusive and premium, the experience falls short.

What’s even more disappointing is how the staff operates. There seems to be an agenda that clearly favors certain groups of people, while others are treated unfairly. A family member of mine was even banned simply for wearing a shirt with his home country’s flag on it—something that should never have been considered offensive in the first place. That decision alone shows a lack of inclusivity and professionalism.

At the end of the day, East Bank Club presents itself as a top-tier fitness and social club, but behind the glossy image, it’s overpriced, biased, and unwelcoming to anyone who doesn’t fit into their preferred crowd.

If you join as a couple, it is a lot cheaper than paying $275 per person and if it’s a couple is $455 for two people. The location is beautiful because it’s right on the river and you can suntan on the roof and lots and lots of people going swimming so it will be more of a social gathering benefit Jim in some ways. But seriously this place is massive and you will find everything you need here. The location is beautiful however, the closest blue line station is grand and it’s about a .8 mile walk from the CTA. And there is really not much parking here unless you are lucky to find street parking or street metered parking.

I wish there was a zero star option. From the start, it was clear that the management does not care about its members. The staff has shown discriminatory behavior, and it’s extremely disappointing to experience such racism in a place that should be welcoming to everyone.

On top of that, the gym is always overcrowded. Good luck getting a machine without waiting forever. The equipment is outdated and poorly maintained, and the entire environment feels chaotic.

They market themselves as a “luxury” gym, but there is nothing luxurious about it. The lack of respect for members, combined with the constant crowding and poor upkeep, makes this one of the worst gyms I’ve ever joined. Save your money and find a place that values its members.

Been coming for a while now. It's a cool space with lots to do and the food they make is incredible, however it's insane how busy this place is.

I've been trying to come during all sorts of odd hours and it's just always packed. They need to start closing off memberships to new members, because for $250 a month you'd expect to not be crammed in together like sardines in a can.

The pool during summer is a particular kind of nightmare. You can't even be in the pool without touching the person next to you.

Amazing club. Don’t listen to the people that bash it. They are just mad that walking in the club doesn’t make you loose weight. They think just breathing in the gym should make you fit. They also get upset that other people are there and want the whole place to themselves. Amazing club and hands down the best in Chicago. You won’t find a nicer club. So stop looking!!!!!

This club is a complete disappointment from top to bottom. They nickel-and-dime their members, treat guests poorly, and operate at a level comparable to a low-end gym while charging premium prices.

The tennis program is especially problematic. This club should be grateful that anyone with even moderate tennis skills is willing to set foot on their courts. Compared to a professionally run program like Mid-Town Athletic Club, they are miles behind in quality, professionalism, and overall member experience. Poor customer service, weak coaching, and rigid, impractical policies are pushing this program toward failure and it's hard to see how it survives without major changes.

One incident cemented my decision never to return. My son was denied participation in a class because an instructor, who had spent less than an hour with him in a single session, subjectively decided his ranking was 0.25 below their class standard. This was not based on any real evaluation process, just an off-the-cuff opinion. We wasted our time coming here, only to be met with an unwelcoming, dismissive attitude that showed zero regard for our time, effort, or commitment.

If the leadership here doesn't overhaul their approach, improve their staff's professionalism, and start treating people with basic respect, they will keep losing players. Frankly, that might be the only outcome that forces real change.

EBC excels in many areas, but there are a few areas where it falls short. For example, on one occasion, Paul in the men’s locker room was short and unhelpful when I raised an issue about a locker battery needing to be reprogrammed. The code to my locker was not working for several weeks, even after an order was placed, which seems unacceptable for a health club of this caliber.

Let's try this again seeing as my original post was blocked. If I could give them a negative stars I would. The management team is raci$t and treat members unfairly. I witnessed a member getting expelled from the gym for no reason. I've seen him in the gym. He is always approachable, kind & never in violation of any gym rules. The only conclusion I can come up with is because he was wearing a shirt with a flag on it. Which as @eastbank has stated is not in violation of any gym rules. Or it was because he was brown. Take your pick but either way he did nothing wrong. If you want a safe & inclusive place to workout save your money & go somewhere else.

I joined this gym expecting a premium experience, but unfortunately, it fell short in several key areas. While the branding and aesthetics might scream “luxury,” the actual experience doesn’t justify the steep membership fees.

For starters, the equipment is often overcrowded during peak hours, making it difficult to complete a workout without waiting. You'd expect better crowd management and more machines at this price point.

Overall, this gym relies too heavily on its “luxury” label without delivering a consistently high-end experience. If you’re looking for real value and results, you might be better off elsewhere.

Very Disappointed with Hidden Parking Fees

I recently attended an event at EBC and was shocked by the new parking rules that were not disclosed at the time of ticket purchase. Only after arriving and attempting to pay at the station did I find out there’s a $50 fee if you park for more than 6 hours.

This is incredibly misleading and feels like a money grab. There was no mention of this during the ticket checkout process something that should be clearly communicated before customers commit to attending.

EBC should be upfront about all extra costs. Transparency matters, and this experience left a very bad impression. I expected better.

I originally experienced a lot of gratitude to the East Bank club staff and members for how I felt they supported me and my 8 year old very medically complicated, quadriplegic daughter who loves swimming more than anything in the world. But then I requested an adult changing table in the women’s locker room or pool area because she is too big for an infant changing table and deserves the dignity of privacy when changing and being cathed. And though they are renovating the women’s locker room and adding a eucalyptus steam room and a snow room with an ice fountain they refused to structurally change anything by simply adding a changing table for a disabled child. I guess the inclusion was only when it was convenient and that is shameful when this is a community with so much resources.

East Bank Club has mastered the art of overcharging while underdelivering. For the eye-watering monthly fee they charge, you'd expect a premium experience — but what you actually get is a packed, chaotic gym where you have to wait in line for treadmills and weight machines like it’s a theme park ride. There’s zero crowd management and no accountability.

Need to call them? Don’t bother — no one answers the phone. Ever. It’s like they actively avoid member communication unless you're signing up to give them more money.

But the real kicker? The dishonest billing. I asked in advance if I needed to cancel my membership before April 30th to avoid being charged for May. I was told the membership would be prorated based on my cancellation date. That was flat-out false. When I went to cancel on May 3rd, I was told I had to remain a member through the end of the month and pay for all of May. No exception. No apology. Just another smirk from a staff that clearly couldn’t care less. When I followed up with customer service, they were — true to form — rude, dismissive, and unhelpful.

This gym is all hype, zero substance. You’re not getting a luxury experience here — just an expensive lesson in what happens when a business gets too comfortable treating its members like ATM machines. Do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else.

Have been a member for almost 10 years and can confidently say the club is essentially unusable at any hour due to over crowding. Management gaffed hard during Covid by allowing an influx of too many members.

No longer a place that feels welcome or safe. Long give are the days when this venerable club offered respite and tranquility from a bustling city. It has lowered its standards and priorities and the place has become a cesspool. It's an antiquated institution trying to live off its once prestigious reputation. It should be redeveloped as soon as possible for the greater good of the neighborhood and its needs.

Today, East Bank Club has more than 10,000 members and approximately 600 employees. Go elsewhere to workout if you can. The classes, locker rooms and parking lots are usually packed. Sometimes it feels like when you're at the airport - always crowded and very busy. The solution to this parking problem that they are currently experiencing is to stop accepting new members and have their employees park at a different lot specifically assigned to them - a third lot. I'm almost certain at least half of them are also parking where the members park their vehicles. The membership also went up this year. The members now have to pay an additional $25 a month, and they raised the parking fees as well, but raising the rates to the parking garages is not the solution to this over crowding situation.
The club is way too crowded because they are taking on way too many new members. This nonsense has to stop.

Been a member at ebc for ~20 years and, as of the past 3 months (December 2024-February 2025), the club has massively gone downhill. It’s as if they’ve forgotten their values completely. Member services is packing the club to the gills with a number of members they cannot support with the current staff and facilities on hand. Instead of regulating the number of members, increasing staff, or improving facilities, they’ve decided to charge more for everything from parking to dues just to deter members from coming to the club. Thats right - they’ve made it more expensive to go there to deter members from visiting so there are more parking spots.

This club used to be about service design, excellence, and creating a wonderful member experience. Now it just feels like moving through a crowded airport: there’s no room, everything is expensive, and the quality is mediocre. A lot of us kept the club afloat during the Great Recession and COVID and it feels like we are getting punished for our loyalty.

If you like drama, this could be your club.

I've been a member here for two years. I received a phone call from Diane yesterday to inform me of a moment I'm having with one of there fitness staff. The staff member is saying things that are not true and Diane would rather take her word. I informed Diane that I have over one and a half years of text messages with this fitness instructor that would explain this moment and requested that I could come in and show her. She refused.

I told her the following: You're hitting the bullseye on the wrong target, I believe your employee is stressed out and needs a vacation, I reassured her that I have zero interests in this fitness instructor romantically, and I did not cause this event.

Here are some things that she could know if she would be open for discussing:

The staff member asked me out (socially) and that goes against EBC policy.

The staff member and I went out socially. The staff member has been in my home several times.

This situation goes outside of her scope of employment. She does not have the right to affect a relationship that her own employee started with me outside of the scope of business. For the record I keep telling the employee I am not attracted to her. It's a moment that I think the employee is having some personal challenges in her life and she's taking it out on me.

Diane- you have zero abilities to listen- I feel bad for your employees health, but I am not your problem.

I've been a member at this health club for several months now, and there's a lot to love about it, but there are a few things that could use improvement. Let me break it down:

First and foremost, the facilities here are truly state of the art. The gym is equipped with modern equipment, and the cleanliness and maintenance are top-notch. Whether you're into cardio, strength training, or group classes, you'll find everything you need. The locker rooms are clean and well-maintained, and the showers are a welcomed post-workout luxury.

What I appreciate the most are the plentiful amenities. There's a spacious pool, a sauna, and even a juice bar. The variety of group fitness classes is outstanding, and the instructors are highly skilled and motivating. This health club has created a great atmosphere for a well-rounded fitness experience.

However, my only gripe is with the billing processes. It's unfortunate that such a fantastic place can be marred by this issue. The billing information is unclear, and it's hard to decipher where some of the fees arise. The lack of detailed descriptions when additional charges appear on my account is frustrating. It would be immensely helpful if they could provide clearer statements or notifications to explain the charges.

Despite this hiccup, I still recommend this health club for its amazing facilities and abundant amenities. If they can improve their billing transparency and communication, it would easily earn a perfect 5-star rating from me.

Mixed bag!

Majority of the staff are fantastic. Noah on the front desk was an absolute credit to the club. Always in a great mood and seemed genuinely happy to be there.

The facilities are great, the hub was cool to work from and the weights and machines have everything you would ever need.

Unfortunately I ended up leaving due to the unpleasant atmosphere on the gym floor primarily down to the staff in the red shirts.

I had a disagreement with one of those particular staff when he started turning lights off when I was in the middle of lifting. Apparently they close the weight area 30 mins before the club shuts, which is fine, but communicate that. Don’t just turn the lights off whilst scowling.

Since that incident there was a toxic atmosphere nearly every time I was there. From being eyeballed during my sessions to being told I wasn’t allowed to wear a tanktop on the gym floor. Not worth the unpleasantness for the amount I was paying so I switched to LifeTime.

I absolutely love this place. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous. The facility is always clean. There are so many things to do you can spend quite a few hours there if you desire. The classes are average — if you’re comparing them to a class only gym like Studio Three.

It can get crowded, so if you want to workout and move on, I suggest going early in the morning. There’s an “I sit on machines for a long time” crowd that is the 9am crowd - avoid at all costs.

The biggest issue you’ll have at this club is dealing with the entitlement of other members. Overall I’ve met a lot of nice folks but there’s certainly a contingency of folks who’ve never been told “no” in their lives and who have no regard for others. That part can be a bit exhausting.

I will preface by saying I primarily go to the gym to lift free weights and use cardio machines.

East Bank Club is my favorite gym I’ve ever belonged to and it’s not even close. The weight room here is fantastic, with a ton of platforms, racks, cable cross machines, and various other good stuff. I usually go in the morning to avoid the post-work rush and i rarely have to wait to use anything. EBC has made it a joy for me to come in and lift every morning.

Then there are all the other offerings. The pool in the summer is my favorite hangout spot. The co-working area is basically equivalent to an added WeWork membership which would run you like $50 a month. They loan you free Hyperice massagers, they have great massage chairs, and they just added those full-leg compression massage things. Since I joined, EBC has added many new things to the weights area, which is a great sign that they are constantly trying to improve the facilities.

I will note a couple of downsides. The class instructors have been hit-or-miss (mostly miss) in my experience which is OK because I don’t love classes. I wish I didn’t have to pay $24 each time to play pickleball - it should be more like $10. And the service at the rooftop Sundeck is also inconsistent.

All in all I feel like I can never leave EBC, even though I’ve only gone for 4 months.

Back in town for a beautiful chicago weekend day. Spent the morning at East Bank Club: spin class, weight lifting, hot yoga class. Then, in the afternoon, I stopped by the co-working space for a little bit of work, followed by a relaxing outdoor hot tub and indoor sauna. EBC is the best club in Chicago

One of the best fitness facilities in the country. Once you visit here you’ll realize no one can replicate this facility. The roof top is amazing and where who’s who of Chicago hang out. A hidden gem in the middle of the city. Also amazed that they don’t charge more for their memberships!!

Most of the staff is great! The facility is great!

The registration people are hit or miss. Some of them are great, and others are not so great. You never know if you are going to get a friendly response or a short, rude response to your question. This is not what you would expect from the frontline of the club.

Unfortunately many of the older members also give the club a bad rep. They take over, move your stuff, and just expect everyone to get out of the way and let them be. When they go to the pool, they all grab at least 25 towels (not an exaggeration) and pile them all over their chair and reserve chairs up front for their friends.

We had a similar experience playing pickle ball. The second level open play class folks only want to play with their friends and with those that have been playing for a while. If you aren't in their clique they ignore you or are rude to you. Not so much of the sportsmanlike conduct that helps people learn. They just want it to be their group and no one new can join.

Overall, we like the club but it is a lot like a high school clique where the in crowd tries to rule.

Love East Bank, but don't make the mistake of taking a Tennis class with "Michael Fox". Quite possibly the worst "coach/instructor" I've had after a literal lifetime of playing 5 or 6 different sports. Just one of those old bitter men that feels insecure if you look different than him and will subtly suggest you "try another sport" even though it's your first lesson ever. Just the worst type of human, luckily they've mostly thrown him to the shadow realm of friday night lessons so you won't have too much of a chance of running into him. All the other tennis instructors are great and actually know what they're talking about. This guy is a liability.

I have a lot of reasons that it makes sense for me to be a member here in addition to the fact that I live right across the street BUT their customer service is absolutely TERRIBLE. They don’t even try. I’ve wasted so much of my time speaking with different branches of their management and every single time I’m told that they will contact me and I never hear back from anyone. I know a few people that have had this same issue. I would expect them to at least get back to me about an issue that I’m having with billing. It makes me question how many other members here are being charged more than what they should be and just don’t realize it. I’ve given them SO many chances but at this point it’s humiliating and disrespectful so I’m cancelling my membership today and finding better service elsewhere. I’ve been a member for a few years now and it is hard to let go but id rather my money go somewhere that makes me feel like a valued member (especially considering all of the money that I spend there OUTSIDE of just the monthly membership fee)

They charged me 3 months of fees on the same day. Never reversed it. I physically walked i to the office 3 times, and emailed 2 times, still no refund given. They're fine if nothing goes wrong, but if something does, their customer service is one of the worst I've ever dealt with.

Poor member services and follow up. Had an issue with my account which took numerous follow ups and hours of my time to fix. Eventually was able to have the issue fixed, but extremely disappointed with the service, staff just does not seem to care at all, even when the club makes egregious mistakes over and over again. If you're considering becoming a member take into account generally poor service.

I just rejoined after 5 years away. The workout area is incredible as always. What has impressed me the most honestly is the hustle and passion of the employees in the dining areas (and overall). I was in the second floor dining area just ordering some lunch to go and the workers were borderline running through the kitchen trying to get everyone their food as quickly as possible while maintaining a friendly attitude and taking time to ask people how their day is going to build relationships with the members. Couldn’t be happier returning to the club.

So I’ve been a “member” at East Bank Club for about a year now, but it won’t be much longer than that. I’m definitely a person who gets annoyed when people talk about race when complaining about businesses but it really feels like you have to be Caucasian to be a REAL member here. I’ve always felt unwelcome here from the staff and people around me. It wasn’t until my last experience at the pro shop that made me write this review. I walked into the shop around 7:50 because I forgot my gym shirt and needed to purchase a shirt. As soon as I walked in, the cashier said “you have 10 minutes until we close”. No greeting at all. Just a reminder that I have to leave within 10 minutes. Anyways, I purchase an EBC branded sleeveless shirt. The shirt was $85, which in my opinion was WAY overpriced for an EBC branded shirt. Again, whatever. I’ve worn size XL for the last 10+ years. The shirt I purchased was XL, but it was way too small. Very tight and short on my torso. It was like a crop top for me. I took it to the shop the next morning to exchange for a bigger size but since the tag was removed it couldn’t be returned or exchanged. I let the employee know that the size was way off, and I compared it to the shirt I currently had on. The lady gave me a very rotten attitude. I explained to her that every other store that charges $80+ for a shirt has a more lenient return policy, such as Nordstrom. Her response : “Well this isn’t Nordstrom”. Long story short, I had to donate the shirt to a homeless person because I have no need for it. I spend $225/ month on my membership, plus $30/month for a locker rental, plus 3-4 days parking fees per week, plus a meal at the restaurant nearly every day. I spend about $1,000 here per month and they can’t return an EBC shirt? I’ve always felt uncomfortable here and this was the final straw. I will be canceling my membership asap.

Great club for exercise/fitness and more although the monthly membership is pricey.

Great weekday happy hour on the roof deck in the summer overlooking the river and by the pool and has live music Tues and Thurs.

Wish the Rooftop food service hours would extend to 7:30pm (at least 7pm) so could have dinner there.

There are barely any evening classes for folks that work during the day now. The only after work hours class used to be a yoga class which was at 8:15pm was suddenly changed to 7:30pm without warning, plus they now lock the doors when the class starts! There was No communication about why the times were changed. It used to be a better facility, it’s gradually becoming average. Management seems to be getting lazy.

A special shoutout to Tierra in the Salon who is just the absolute best. Nothing but amazing things to say about this place, definitely a must join. yesterday I returned to EBC after a year hiatus. I have always been very impressed with the quality of care and service at the club. The way they have adapted to covid is downright inspirational. This club is one of the best run hospitality businesses that I have experienced. I have been a member since 2001, I'd guess that about half of their current team was there when joined. This level of tenure allows for a consistency that is special. I love east bank. If I could give them six stars I would.

East bank club used to be nice facility, I was a member for last 7 years or so. It got to be bad with pandemic. Club since reopening- in July 2020 had been providing only 10% of services I use. Who wants to be bothered with trying to sign up for group classes and swim pool- not me. Spa services not what I use, sauna closed so on. So I was using their cardio machines and weight lifting only
I had discussed several time with member services the fact that it is expensive membership and should decrease to 10% oof current in order to members payy for services that actually they provide. All the times I heard that other services will be brought back soon.
Tired of waiting, I went to small boutique personal trainers gym by me. And ordered Peleton. Sorry East bank owner, other members will be leaving soon too- who wants to pay over 200$ for privilege of using machines and doing virtual classes?. Businesses got to be connected to reality!
