Water in swimming pool is cold they should keep it at 82 degrees but hold 78 and lie to people . Lincoln Park athletic and Lakeview at least honestly keep water at 82. Couple people get sick to swim in cold water

Save yourself the trouble and buy home gym equipment. Worst experience ever. My wife and I were members from 2016 until 2020 when covid hit. I had purchased a gift card for my wife for $170 for massages for her birthday. We were still members when I purchased the gift card. They stopped massage service during covid and never resumed. We have called and stopped in several times to try and get a refund to no avail. The dialogue is always the same, massages are not offered so can’t use the card and no refund. Something seems off. My wife and I have recently retired and are moving permanently to southern Spain. I won’t miss the US at all. Situations like this are not rare. No customer service at all. EVAC is doomed. What goes around, comes around.

I have been coming here for years, and while it's not a great gym, it's still the best value in the area - especially since there are no alternatives close to downtown Evanston. A lot of areas are showing wear and tear unfortunately, and there are little or no renovations happening there.

For example, a stairmaster broke and instead of fixing or replacing it, it was simply removed. That was months ago.

The locker rooms are okay, but could use some updates.

Pros:
Basketball court
Swimming pool
Sauna and steam room
Reasonably clean
Great location

Cons:
Equipment is starting to be outdated, machines are frequently out of order
Very limited hours, especially on weekends
Locker room showers are old
Expensive paid parking

This is a great club but why can’t we work out until 9pm? Closing at 7pm… why? Please give us at least another hour or two

Closes way too early and many things are not maintained well. Basketballs are always deflated. The nets are always broken. Lots of weird egos from the men at the gym who get mad if you’re using a machine/weight that they want. Bathrooms are dirty and always smell like pee. Volleyball club gets to stay until 10 pm on Tuesdays but the actual people working out have to be out at 8 or 9pm. Most people work 9-5, so I don’t understand the point in closing so early. Gym is still crowded around closing time. Your money is better spent at either a nicer facility or something that’s open later.

Excellent! Clean. The staff and I structure are to notch.
Excellent, as always. The classes are very good. I recommend a lot of them but particularly in Nia, Zumba, Pilates, and Yoga . Instructors of both are awesome. I have to add that Jessica, the awesome manager, is always there for us. The staff are phenomenal. This is a unique place to get healthier and happier! Thank you

They really need to extend hours. Especially on the weekends when they close at 7.... most gyms are going back to regular hours (some are even 24/7) and for the price they charge to use the facility they should have more than enough leeway to hire additional staff.

Edit: it’s been 2 years since I’ve posted this review and they still have not extended their hours. Do yourself a favor and sign up for a gym that will actually let you work out there in the evening if you ever have something to do during the day

I’m actually appalled. I signed up for this place to swim over the summer. I signed up for a one month membership, get a second month free.

I went TWICE, thinking that the pool would be available for swimming after work. Not the case. They have swimming lessons that clog the lanes and I was booted from the lap lanes both times I was there.

Hands down the worst experience I have had at a gym. Thank goodness I don’t live there anymore and have better options.

This gym is excellent – it's well-equipped, meticulously maintained, and has a dedicated staff member who regularly checks the equipment to ensure everything is in top condition. Some of the front desk folks are a delight. The only downside is the behavior of some members who occupy machines for long periods, glued to their phones instead of using the equipment. It is frustrating when you're planning to use some of those equipments. Additionally, there's a noticeable lack of consideration from some individuals who leave machine attachments, weights, and plates scattered around the floor. It wouldn't take much to return them to their proper places, yet they’re often left lying around, creating unnecessary clutter.

I can see why the reviews here are so poor. I tried booking personal training. Bought a package. And then they couldn’t find trainers to support hours. I asked for money back for package and they denied my request. I then asked to cancel my membership and they IGNORED my email for weeks.

Nice little gym! I really only joined to swim, so I can say with confidence that the pool and the women's locker room are well-maintained and comfortable, but I can't comment on much else. I'll agree with the general consensus that the folks working there can be weirdly grouchy and don't seem super interested in providing good customer service. Maybe it's a terrible place to work, who knows?

My biggest issue is that they have those great-looking climbing walls completely closed off, and won't even say why. Are they dangerous and in need of repair? Do they just like the discount they get on insurance for not offering climbing? No matter what, if it's not coming back, you should remove them and stop claiming the walls as a facility on the website.

Tl;dr good gym with sketchy practices regarding cancellation.

Okay, I’ve been waiting a while to make this review. For reference, I’ve been attending this gym for over a year and I’m an NU student. I chose to go here over SPAC because it is significantly closer and I was told the gym is significantly less crowded.

Pros: I think the weight room is great and had everything I needed as someone who works out mostly for health reasons. I like that everyone minds their own business here. I think they have a great variety on their machines and weights in general. You can do pretty much everything. I even did some PT exercises there! It’s also cool that they offer a wide range of classes and the locker rooms are very nice and convenient.
As a student, you can get an off-peak deal for significantly cheaper than the usual membership and since I like to workout in the morning, it worked great for me.

Cons: This is not the gym’s fault, but be ready to be around people who have very poor etiquette. There are times when it’s fine, but other times some people do everything that it is considered rude to do at the gym. Also, I wish they had a better mechanism to prevent the gym from smelling foul… it’s been an issue a couple times.

Now, here is the reason why I removed one star and I’m not sure I can recommend it over SPAC. This was originally going to be a five star review until last week.
Even with the discount, it is still on the pricy side considering we can have SPAC for free and there are other cheaper options in the area. I was okay with the price just for having a peaceful workout session, however last week I had an interaction that really pissed me off.
Here’s the deal: I got a year membership for my senior year. After graduation, I stayed in Evanston for two months and moved out. The yearly membership happened to end around graduation, so I emailed to ask about cancellation in advance. They told me that after the year, it became a monthly membership and it will renew month to month until I cancel. That worked perfectly! So, three weeks before renewal of my third month after the yearly membership ended, I ask them to cancel my membership. They tell me my service will end a few days after I move out, which is great. However, then I receive an email saying that I needed to give a 30 day notice (???) if not I will get charged for the next month. Well, I thought that was insane because: 1. My access to the gym was going to be terminated 2. I literally asked about this two months ago and NO ONE told me about this policy. So, I went to the front desk and the lady working there is basically like: “It was in your contract, you will get charged”. Well, yeah of course it was in the fineprint, why did you hide it when I explicitly asked two months ago? She rolled her eyes and basically told me that I should have read my contract and to deal with it and she was so rude. Then, she called the membership people telling me it wouldn’t be helpful. Well, the membership guy was nice and told me I wouldn’t be charged because the grace period was until ten days before renewal. Honestly, that’s the only reason this is getting four stars instead of one because; again, NO ONE told me about the grace period when I explicitly asked, and also the front desk employer was just so rude. Don’t you guys realize how scammy this is? Regular membership is like 90 dollars a month and do you really feel the need to try overcharge your customers with sketchy cancellations policies, esp people who have been going there for over a year?? Absolutely not. You need to be more clear about this. I signed my contract over a year ago, I don’t remember the fineprint! Also, was it that hard to include in the email when I asked TWO months ago “cancel 10 days before renewal please”?? Honestly, that just completely ruined the vibe for me. It’s just weird behaviour.

No proper ventilation in the restrooms. And the shower water turns scorching hot every now and then. Climbing wall has been "Out of order" for 2 year. And if you decide to cancel you'll still have to pay for the next two months. You'd expect more for the price but all you really get is free towels.

Wow. I have never in my life been treated so rudely by a so-called "manager" of a club in my life. First of all, it took about 10 rings for anyone to pick up the phone. Then, when this person did, I asked if they got a new app, because mine has stopped working. She very sarcastically said, "Um, yeah, like four months ago." I then said that I had not received any notice of that and she again, sarcastically said, "It was literally sent to everyone, multiple times." I said I literally didn't ever receive it, which I didn't. She then wanted to argue with me about whether I received it and I told her she was being rude and she accused me of being rude and shouting! Yeah, I had to shout over her accusations of me not knowing whether I had a notification. I then asked for her name, and she just said she was a manager. Then she asked for my name, which I gave to her but she didn't understand it. I hung up and will be quitting the gym. If that's the way a manager speaks to members over the phone, you can imagine how little this place cares about customer experience.

It's a good gym, however there are two easy areas for improvement:

1) The climate control is not great. Today it was 35 outside but 73 in the weight area, which is a bit too warm when one is exercising. I could see the thermostat was set to 68 but it said it was currently 73.

2) The hours could definitely be extended. 7pm close on the weekends is too early.

It’s a great gym, and it’s especially nice that it’s not busy. A huge point of sanity in my day. Love that they have so many squat racks and lifting platforms.

However I wish the hours were extended to 11pm on weekdays, 9pm on weekends. Just that extension would make a huge difference. Working out after dinner on weekdays or immediately before going out on weekends, which I like to do on occasion, is not possible with the hours as they stand.

Minor changes I would like to see: more bench press spots (frequently filled up), adding the second weight load up bar to the leg press to get more weight on there, and dumbbells going up past 100 lbs. Lifting platforms could use renovation, they are uneven in spots.

I recently became a member and so far I have tried four different locations. I came to this location for the Aqua TBT. The pool area was really nice and clean, the workout was great, the locker room and shower area awesome.
However, I think that they use dangerously high amount of chlorine to clean the pool because from the moment I walked into the pool area the strong, heavy and almost suffocating smell of chlorine mixed with a very high humidity hit me in the face. I immediately felt my eyes burning. It was so intense that I even wasn’t sure if I will be able to breathe this for a whole one hour during the workout. I noticed that the instructor who wasn’t even in the water had to stop often during the workout to take breaks, wash her face and drink water.
After the workout I took a really nice shower and put a very strong scented body lotion. For the rest of the day I washed my hands multiple times as I usually do but my skin continued to smell of chlorine and my eyes remained burning. Not only but during the night I woke up multiple times and every time when I was turning into my bed there was a smell of chlorine coming out from under the blanket. On the next day throughout the whole day my skin continued to smell very strongly of chlorine regardless of showering and washing my hands frequently. I understand that safety and hygiene is crucial with public pools but there are some limits while using chemicals that they shouldn’t exceed. I urge the management to investigate how the pool area is being cleaned and if they use a safe amount of chlorine that won’t hurt the health and safety of the members. Until then I am not going to visit this pool and I will stick to using the pools on Lincoln Park and Lakeview.

This is one of the best health clubs I have ever joined and I have had a health club membership for a long time and generally use one when out of town.

Everyone is friendly, the equipment is great. It is not however a "Gold's Gym" if that is the experience you are looking for. It does however have a very full and complete weight room. Just no over-the-top grunting and slamming. The gym is not overcrowded either.

The locker rooms are clean and have electronic key pad locks. I give this gym 5 out of 5 stars.

Where do I start. Before COVID I was an active member at EAC. With reduction in new cases and roll out of vaccinations I figured it was a good time to get back in the gym. My plan was to purchase a high quality filtration mask that would provide outstanding protection while I worked out.

Like many my biggest priority is safety. I went online and purchased a VENT 3 Filtration Trainer mask. This "vent" mask have VENT Performance Filters that filter 99% particulate certified giving you piece of mind while you train.

On my first day back at the gym I was nervous about working out especially during the pandemic. I figured with my mask and with other precautions I would be ok.

Upon arriving I was told that no masks with vents were allowed. Shared that my mask was not a "vent" mask as outlined on there not allowed list. I showed staff the filtration provided. The staff then responded that we will provide a surgical mask. I responded that the surgical mask was not sufficient or acceptable and actually a lot worst than what I was using. The staff said it was policy and I could not logically rationalize with their incompetence. Instead of prioritizing my health they proceeded to enforce their negligent policies.

Today I was emailed by William Roberts (Customer Service Manager) that reiterated policy. I shared that "medical masks that you provide at the front only provide 45-55% filtration, while cloth masks that are acceptable at the gym filter only 25-38% of particles. The mask I was wearing filters 99% particles. "

During my exchange with Will Roberts I asked if putting members lives at risk is better policy? Which I received no response. Apparently putting members lives at risk is acceptable policies at EAC. Just wanted to share to make the public aware. Hopefully provide some heads up before making the trek down to the club.

think the staff is exceptional and being in the hospitality business myself I understand what they go through every day. A big thank you to the cleaning staff and what they have to put up with everyday.

Another reason why I like this club is because it’s so eclectic regarding its members young and old all seem to get along with each other quite well. It is time for the men’s locker room to be renovated and that includes the showers and the steam room and sauna.

I have asked in the past when they do renovate the steam room is they add additional rails for people when they’re stepping down from the seating areas to make it safer, currently they only have them on each side of the wall and they should have one installed right in the middle for safety especially for our seniors everyone else.

The Evanston Athletic Club is certainly a high-end facility. The problem is, the membership/visitor policies are constantly changing without notice and the front desk staff members are consistently rude and dismissive (as another reviewer said). Their inconsistency is troubling. For example, when my mother is unable to get her locker open they ask her to identify some of the items in the locker. When other women need help with their lockers they are not always asked to prove that the locker is actually their locker.

Today, at the front desk (I believe her name was Nora) told my mother and I that guest passes were NOW only for first time guests. She said (with plenty of attitude) that she would make a one-time exception. When my mother explained that she received the passes because the club changed their "points" system without notice, and that the agreement was that she would be able to give the passes to her children when they were in town, Nora said (with tons of attitude) that she would check with Amy about that. When I asked when Amy would be in she said (with a snarky tone) "later today." After a prolonged offensive tone, my mother and I left the club without working out (after paying the parking meter). This interaction could have been far more pleasant and EAC employees could have a bit more customer service acumen. This isn't the first time I have had a bad experience with the front desk at EAC but it will likely be the last time I enter the facility so as to avoid the rude and dismissive employees.

UPDATE:
After several email correspondences and a conference call with the Membership Director, Ray, my mother has decided to return to the club after a month away and I will join her for a month as a guest. Ray ensured that Nora had been spoken to about her problematic behavior, that other members of the staff had transitioned out of the club and that he plans to address the chronic customer service issues with new training and new personnel. This is what we asked for, and probably the best outcome we could have hoped for. I am deciding to be optimistic and believe that change will come to the club. My family will, however, remain vigilant and I hope yours will too!

Hands down the best gym I've ever been a member of. The entire staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They really make you feel like a member of the club :) It has the best indoor rock climbing facility for miles around, plenty of space and weight lifting equipment, a sauna, the pool, in-house massage therapists and athletic trainers – not to mention all of the classes you can attend. 11/10 would recommend.

*Edit after reading a couple of the negative reviews*
The people who say it's not a "serious" gym because you can't "slam weights" or "go hard" are usually the same people who leave their sweaty towels on the floor and don't re-rack the plates after they're finished quarter-squatting 405 (cool, bro). Be a gym gentleman.

Lincoln Square Athletic Club is part of the umbrella organization that includes Evanston Athletic Club. They’ve been able to maintain reasonable standards of cleanliness, repair shower stalls, regrout bathroom tiles, replace splintering lockers, clean soiled carpeting, invest in elegant furniture, repaint dirty walls, and decorate with style—all in an ongoing and timely fashion. I don’t understand why EAC hasn’t been able to do the same. You want a health club to be upbeat, classy, and fun—not depressing, gaudy, and an embarrassment. Glad to have switched

“We are not a gym; we are a club.”

These are the words of one of EAC’s Elite trainers. On Monday, June 11 I was doing dumbbell bench presses with 80lb dumbbells, and this trainer reprimanded me and asked that I stop “dropping the weights” because the noise is “disruptive” to other members. I responded that what I was doing was normal at a gym. She then told me that EAC is not, in fact, a gym. She also recommended that I use lighter weights if I cannot workout without dropping them. By implication, she said that I am not allowed to push myself to make gains in strength and size, since doing so requires lifting weight that is (for me) heavy.

Of course, I was not carelessly “dropping” the dumbbells. I did two sets to failure and carefully “dropped” the weights from about bench height, guiding the dumbbells with my hands until they reached the ground. I wasn’t being inconsiderate or reckless. I was working on progression and was pushing myself. I carefully “dropped” the weights to prevent injury to my shoulders. The dumbbells did make a relatively loud noise, but that is because EAC DOES NOT HAVE RUBBER GYM FLOORING. When they remodeled a few months ago, they replaced all of the rubber flooring with a layer of carpet padding and green turf. This was a foolish decision on the part of the owner, especially considering the fact that the free weights are on the second floor of an old building. As a result, heavy dumbbells make a loud noise when you put them on the floor unless you place them very carefully.

Interestingly, they also installed four lifting platforms when they remodeled. Does this mean that we cannot “drop weights” on the platform either because the noise is disruptive to other members? If we are not allowed to make noise on the platforms, why did they install them? Do we have to carefully and noiselessly place the new bumper plates on the platforms when we do heavy deadlifts?

I’ve been a member at EAC for about three years, but I’ve always felt like it wasn’t a real gym. EAC caters to affluent retirees who want to work with trainers and to middle-aged professionals who are not interested in pushing themselves hard. Many of these members seem uncomfortable with people who work out with intensity, lift heavy, and really work on making gains. So if you’re serious about bodybuilding or weightlifting, if you’re serious about making noticeable gains in muscularity and strength, if you want to lift heavy or workout intensely, I do not recommend this “club.”

This place is not kept as clean as the other CAC gyms, I think they lack in cleanliness because they allow children to workout here. I undoubtably contracted ring worm here. THERE IS ALWAYS HAIR IN THE SHOWERS AND SAUNA AND THE MACHINES ARE OLD AND DIRTY.
I contacted corporate and they did nothing. I will be changing gyms once my contract is up.

Commercial club with constant solicitation for paying classes. Amateurish higiene around the pool with members paying for lessons given a pass. Bossy, dim, unresponsive and vindictive staff (no men) -if you pay for lessons though they' l kiss your ring .

I received a 7 day free pass from EAC, so I decided to try it out. When I arrived at the front desk at 1:30 pm on a regular business day, I was told that the "membership team" is in a meeting and that they won't be done until 4:00pm. The man at the front desk said that he can't help me, and that I should come back at 4:00pm. I explained to him that it's a 15 minute drive for me each way, but he didn't really seem to care. Very disappointing service!

First I am giving this gym 4 stars only because it is very pricey but you get a lot of bang for your buck. I had to write a REAL review not one that is nit-picking this place. If you are like me and want to get a lot of bang for your buck this is a great place. The locker rooms are constantly being updated with new features. They keep this place pristine. For those complaining about the pool area I do not agree. For the pool to be used as often as it is they do an awesome job keeping it pristine. What folks have failed to mention you there is a therapy pool right next to the main pool that you can use if you want to relax your muscles. There is a large whirlpool that is also great. I really like this gym because they have everything. Great free weights, great machines, and there equipment always works. You will rarely see any machines not working. The other reason I give this place a 4 out of 5 is the people. They are not the nicest, they are very snobby at times but who cares. You are there for your journey. They offer tons of classes at tons of times. So if you can afford it I definitely recommend this gym.

Charged me for a whole month extra, after my one year was up. I called on Jan 3rd and they wouldn't re-reimburse me. I was informed I just had to remember that payment was on a rolling basis and they would just continue to post a fee until I called to cancel. I signed for membership last year so how am I suppose dot remember all the contract terms. They should remind via email about these things. and really bad unfriendly service when you try to cancel.

The pool is shalow, barely adequate, used by seniors who walk in their sneakers inside the pool. The staff walk around the pool in their street shoes right of the street to give their classes. Your concerns are not only not addressed but instead there is retribution, a cost associated when you complain about staff or members paying for classes like the little old lady turning on the bubbles without asking. They harass you. They push you out. A swim suit and a compression short were stolen in my rented combination access locker, the door of the locker left open repeatedly for good measure and when I moved to an adjacent locker at their suggestion that one was left open repeatidly, the old one never. The staff has a pass to the lockers. This is a for profit fitness place. This is not a social club. By comparison the YMCA has 2 deep water 30 meters pools with 10 lanes total - wide, accommodating 20 swimmers. Steam and Sauna are better. There are 8 private family rooms each with shower, toilet and sink compared to 2 at the EAC. You dont feel the continous pressure to join some class or get a personal trainer. It is paradise. The staff is exquisitely polite. Like in a social. Membership same. If I could give the EAC zero rating I would. If you are fit just wanting to exercise this is not the place for you. There are much better alternatives. General observation: stay away from commercial, for profit fitness clubs. The staff answer to the ownership, not to the members, and has no consideration for your grievances.

General good experience but the wifi never works and has been continually reported. Rather then fixing the root of the problem which is the system can't maintain the amount of users and upgrading the equipment they merely reset which only fixes the problem for 5 mins at a time. When reported the individual was very dismissive and clearly had no interest in addressing the issue.

I love this gym! I'm a student at Northwestern, but chose to pay a membership at EAC over using my free uni membership because this gym is really that good. The weight room is well equipped and never too busy, even during peak gym hours. I love that yoga and cycling classes are included in the gym membership. The rock climbing wall and bouldering area is pretty good for the space, too. The student membership rates are very reasonable for everything you get at this gym.

I have mixed emotions. Love the gym and the people I have met in there working out are great. However the personal trainers don't seem that friendly. They, except one, never speak. They just awkwardly stare.
