So a friend of mine goes to this gym faithfully and I finally ended up in the neighborhood. I took the chance to go and see the hype. I never understood the concept and I was very confused. When I walked in, a red haired lady (I took her name, but I couldnโ€™t remember as Iโ€™m writing this review) she was so knowledgeable about this gym and passionate, she made it look so fun. Iโ€™m thinking of making a membership.

I recently climbed at FA Block 37. It was a very fun gym with very well thought out sets. I'm short 5'1 and didn't feel like I was constantly maxed out with tall/wide moves.
Their mid-range sets were especially nice, it seems a lot of setters have a hard time setting that range.
The staff were nice and the gym was about as clean as any other.

I'd go back for sure.

Awesome gym on the 4th floor of the complex.

Really spacious and had some very creative setting. I didnt see any rope, bouldering only. They also have a full gym as well.

Lots of cubbies, clean facilities. The overhangs are pretty cool, one of which is really low and small.

Slabs are good problems without sending you to the broken ankie zone. For downtown chicago, it was chill and I recommend.

The space itself is well maintained, but the route setting is subpar for more experienced climbers. Most problems involve jugs and feel like you're climbing a ladder. There is very little technical climbing. I think it's a product of the location and trying to woo newcomers, which is fine for that. But for more experienced climbers, it lacks variety. Coming from CA gyms like Touchstone and Mesa Rim, I might be biased, but there are only a handful of problems that are actually engaging in a space that has such potential. Definitely fun if you are new to climbing, but not really worth it if you have more experience.

My Friend who is a member decided to take my girlfriend and I to join him and his girlfriend. Space was very easy to navigate and wasnโ€™t too packed, but had regulars there, for midday during a Sunday. The space offers a lot of routes for varying degrees of difficulty as well as has a nice assortment of weights to use for warming up to strengthen and condition. The views are great and bring a lot of natural light into the facility.

Stopped by while in town for a conference. Excellent gym. Wide variety of interesting problems with excellent setting. The problems will appeal to those with varying styles and abilities. (Personally, I love slab, and found lots of great slab problems, which is rare at most bouldering gyms). Also very glad to see they are using V-grades instead of the color/spectrum/circuits style grading that many bouldering gyms are using now. Many other amenities including weights, cardio equipment, etc. I would certainly get a membership here if I were local.

First Ascent is one of my favorite places in Chicago. To me itโ€™s really more than a place, itโ€™s a community. I come to FA to climb, to work out and even just to work and run into people. Everyone Iโ€™ve met is extreme kind and friendly. I especially want to give a shout out to the staff who are nothing but great. Iโ€™ve been a member for 4 years now!

I love the events, in particular the 1 day events like Le Tour. I bet some more ambitious outdoorsy member gatherings like climbing, biking or camping trips would be a big hit.

I do think thereโ€™s some things that can be improved.

Some more staff, especially at the busy gyms like Block 37 would go a long way. On busy days the people at the front desk can get totally overwhelmed, lines out the door. Iโ€™d also appreciate if there was a staff member, ideally someone more senior, dedicated to walking around to interact with the community, be it small tips and coaching on the walls, looking out for safety issues, brushing chalked up holds or just hanging out. They could also be one to do small tasks like check lost and found, tidy up the gym, etc.

Cleanliness and maintenance can be also be issues. Corners get extremely dusty and bathrooms are often missing soap and other basics. It seems like the cleaning crews donโ€™t have much ownership over the space or communication on what need to be done just isnโ€™t there. Iโ€™ve mentioned this to staff a couple of times but apparently the cleaning crews are third parties that they donโ€™t get much control over. I feel like cleaning used to be better.

My takeaway is that this is an amazing community but I do fear that as it expands things will start to slip through the cracks. Iโ€™d caution that trying to turn this into a pure for profit business may loose a lot of what makes it special.

I went here when I was visiting my friend who lives in the area and I was quite impressed by this rock climbing gym. They have many different levels of bouldering you can try. In addition, the gym has such a nice view of the city. There is also a free weights area and some cardio machine. The free weights area has ample equipment, with barbells, dumbbells, and a few machines. There are also a few tables and you could take a break to do some studying or remote work if you wanted.

Be careful about your points if you're a member.

I've went there regularly since Aug 2022 and the experience was always pleasant... until I checked my points this May.
In early May, I referred 6 friends in and only received the referral points for 1.
Further, I noticed that while I at least referred 4+ friends to the gym between January and May, I received none of the points.

I emailed them immediately, they added the points for the 5 friends in May back, but not for anyone before. -- Fine, it's a while ago and I also couldn't remember who they're clearly and didn't bother to reach out to every possible candidate for such a minor issue. -- The most annoying part is the staff's condescending tone in emails. It seems that they considered adding the points back as a favor to me, instead of an action to correct their own errors.

Worse, I later realized that at least 2 friends I referred became members, which meant 2500 points each. Of course, I didn't receive any of them.

When I reached out to the support team again, they confirmed the situation but refused to give me the points. The excuse seems to be that I'm on a free membership redeemed by points and don't have a formal membership.
But why should I continue to be a member if the gym doesn't honor its contract with its customers and behaves so rudely?
And why my membership status would prevent you from correcting your own errors?
And needless to say, their website provides any clue that free membership will be discriminated.

Disclaimer: The 5000 extra points won't make much difference, especially considering how unlikely I will resume my membership, I just want to make things right. And the staff I met in the gym are really nice and lovely persons.

Few complaints:
1. The spray wall is absolutely awful.
25 degrees littered with kilter board holds. No real training can be done here.
2. Would really love a tension board 2,
or at least upgrade the 2016 moonboard holds to the 2024 set.
3. Slabs stagnate at v5โ€ฆ

But overall, it is a great facility and it has great staffs.
Setting is good in general, if you are not expecting a comp style bloc.

I went here for my first bouldering experience and signed up for the guided session. Gary was a great teacher - engaging, encouraging, patient, and really gauged my understanding and abilities well. He designed a customized lesson that led to a fun and successful challenge for me. I'm 53 years old -- a little arthritis in my hands and knees, a bunion on my foot, etc. etc. --and I was worried I wouldn't be able to do much, but with Gary's help I learned my body was capable of more that I thought. The facility was clean, attractive, and everyone there was very nice and patient!

Been climbing at this gym for 2 years and love it. Setting is good and the training facility has been getting a lot better. Only thing Iโ€™d suggest is getting rid of the spray wall in favor of a tension board 2.0. With that, I think block 37 would be the best gym in Chicago by a wide margin!

Was in the city for the first time for a couple days and came here on a whim. Iโ€™m very glad that I did, super great bouldering facility. Has everything Iโ€™d want in a gym, friendly staff and crowd (20s to 30s age range mostly if that matters to you), relatively big fitness area for a climbing gym, city/street overlooks, and some really fun wall formations and routes. Beginner friendly, plenty of entry climbing and fun challenging routes. Would recommend!

A great gym! Super walkable location in the middle of the city and also at the top floor of a mall. You get awesome views of the city below while climbing!
Holds were a bit greasy but otherwise it was nice. The restrooms and mats were kept clean and the whole place felt brand new.
Grading was on the easy side which makes sense given the number of newer climbers I saw. You can expect to be sending problems a grade higher than your usual target. The climbs seemed to cater well to climbers of different sizes and there was lots of stuff I could enjoy even though I'm a smaller climber. I especially liked their comp wall
I'd come here again!

The gym is very nice in a beautiful location. For the route setting, personally I wasn't a fan of the length of most boulders, I think on average there were over ten moves per boulder. I think past seven or eight there's not much point, the most interesting moves are going to be at the bottom where you're fresh. Still, there were a lot of interesting moves from a variety of styles.

I've never found a type of workout that feels good and that I enjoy, and it turns out bouldering at FA Block 37 is the unicorn! It feels more like a game than a workout, but I've gotten noticeably stronger since I started climbing 2x/week last fall. Climbs are up for long enough that there's enough time to project routes before new ones are set, but they're swapped out frequently enough that there's always something new to try. I love that other climbers are always willing to chat about routes and that folks watch each other for beta and advice, and I never feel like I'm jockeying or competing for space or knowledge. I do wish that the Block 37 location had more of the variety of classes and events that other FA locations have -- particularly, acro-yoga -- and even more so I wish that FA would be a pioneer among the climbing gyms and open a South Side location (I'm pushing for Hyde Park!), which would be very well received.

I'm so glad to have this facility in the loop! They reset new routes often so I come several times a week and still find plenty of various difficulty climbs to work on here. The gym is clean, staff is friendly, plus the classes, workshops and guest passes are great perks to have with the membership.

As a climbing gym it's great. But the staff let's members workout barefoot or in socks in the weight area. People putting their sweaty feet on equipment and lifting free weights (and dropping them) barefoot. Staff walks by and doesn't say a word. Unless you're looking for a staff infection I wouldn't use a single bench or machine in this gym.

Update 2023-11: A year later, I'm back. Feels like home when the Wifi connects right away ;) This is still a great gym, from setting over facilities to the friendly staff. Not crowded at all on weekends. Older sets can be smeary but no different than elsewhere and mostly nothing that can't be salvaged with some good brushing. They now have a Kilter Board on top of the Moon board. Gym prices in the US are what they are ;) Looking forward to next year already :D
---
Great gym and at a, for the US, relatively low price to boot. Grading seemed a bit on the softer side maybe but not too bad. I found the step-up from V4 (which I almost always flashed) to V5 (which I managed one with plenty of projecting) a bit steep, but that may have been coincidence on the routes I tried.
Setting was very nice throughout the grades, only a bit strange that I had two lines that seemed to require stepping onto dual tex. Maybe I had the wrong beta.

Nice views of the surrounding city streets through the large windows. Free WIFI. Plenty of free to use keypad lockers. Surprisingly empty on a Sunday around noon.

Overall a great experience!

EDIT- The co-founder reached out to be with a very wonderful apology and I am excited to give them a second chance :)
Went to a yoga class this morning and the instructor didnโ€™t show up and apparently they sometimes just cancel the class without notifying anyone including the people at the front desk. Considering that this was the only morning class that they offer in their weekly schedule, Iโ€™m super disappointed that the one class I can attend a week just doesnโ€™t happen. Wonโ€™t be returning.

This First Ascent location is awesome! The gym is huge, especially considering that it's in the loop. The size combined plus constant route setting there is always something new to try and you'll never get bored. The locker rooms are clean, there is a good variety of traditional gym equipment, fun events happening all the time, there's nothing but positives! Grayson does an awesome job running the gym and knows everyone that comes in the door by name so kudos to him and all of the staff.

When I moved to Chicago I was looking for a new place to climb and First Ascent was the absolute correct choice. Great and varied routes set very often for all skill levels as well as a membership that enables access to all the gyms across the city. The Block 37 location right off the red and blue lines is perfect especially for the winter.

Very happy to have found it and would recommend it to anyone who likes climbing or wants to try it!

Super fun bouldering gym, the wieght room, view, and employees are all phenomenal. The only critique I have comes from the setting. Routes can be really soft and the grading isnt super consistent especially on slab. The routes are all pretty fun tho, I'd definetly reccomend checking it out

The gym opens till 11pm but the mall closes at 10pm. So it is a hassle to get to this gym when late, especially because there's no signage for the gym on the outside of the mall. Otherwise a pretty solid gym.

This was my second time visiting a first ascent gym in the Chicago area. Their block 37 location was a great space with tons of bouldering problems and variety of terrains. I will definitely be returning.

Very spacious with a variety of climbing problems from beginner to expert where you will no doubt find a fun favourite and a challenging project to return and try again. Somewhat meager cardio & lifting equipment, but plenty of space for each of those and only in use for reasonable amount of time -- the main draw is certainly the climbing. Squat racks have mirrors in front so you can check your form. Yoga classes and plenty of space to use independently. Staff is friendly and insightful when it comes to climbing. Other members are polite. A gym with an overall positive culture.

One of the most beautiful gyms that I ever went to. I already climbed in other countries and in other cities in the US but this place is probably the best so far.

All good but the music needs some intense work. Get a community playlist going on Spotify or something. Also, get some more Grayson sets up. Their sets at Maggie Daley are fire.

Amazing first experience :) everyone who works and climbs there was very sweet and encouraging. Important things to remember for your first time:

โ€ข Wear clothes youโ€™re ok getting chalky or damaged from the rougher parts of the wall
โ€ขIf youโ€™re renting shoes, itโ€™s best to wear socks
โ€ขstart slow and bring a partner if possible just in case!

The arena had plenty of room for maneuvering. The view is spectacular during breaks between climbs. Thereโ€™s a little something for everyone here - from complicated paths to just-complicated-enough for first timers to get a decent workout. I also appreciate that itโ€™s very clean, and the staff observant and helpful. The price might seem high, but for personal convenience (located close to my work), I couldnโ€™t ask for a better workout/play place for big kids like myself :D

I hadn't been to First Ascent since the start of the pandemic. It has always been a warm and friendly place to climb and there is always a variety of routes to choose from. The renovations they did to expand has just added to that experience and happy to be a member of this community again!

Awesome place to climb, it is very comfortable moving around and they have lockers with password that you can put your stuff in. The bathrooms are very big they have showers, and you can change and stuff in there. The problems are fun very friendly and challenging for beginners and pros alike. Love the place tbh will recommend to other people.
