Really fun bouldering gym β€” easily one of the best I’ve been to. The route setting is fantastic, with a ton of variety and plenty of technical problems that push you to focus on footwork, tension, and balance rather than just brute upper-body strength. The grades definitely lean on the tougher side, but it’s clear the setters know what they’re doing, and the climbs are both challenging and rewarding.

Beyond the walls, the gym has everything you’d want for training: a moon board, campus rungs, a scatter board, and a well-equipped workout area to round out your session. The space itself feels fresh and modern, and the staff are super friendly and welcoming, which adds to the overall positive vibe. A great spot for both serious climbers and those looking to level up their skills.

Sending in color invited me to check out this climbing gym, and I’m super happy with both the facilities and the kindness of the staff. Community oriented gatherings open to minority or underrepresented groups impacts everyone positively. Thank you for continuing to open your doors to gathering like that!

No paper towels in the men's bathroom, but there was a big stack of free tampons. A bit awkward to dry your hands with them though.

As someone who mainly boulders, I enjoyed my time here because it's only bouldering. I must say that the setting felt kinda easy compared to my home gym FA Arlington Heights. A lot of the V3s felt like V2s and many of the 4s are flashable. Grading starts to feel more accurate around the V5 level. Regardless, I had a good session here.

This location gets 4 stars, because the AC felt inadequate, and there aren't enough brushes around the gym.

Probably the best bouldering gym I’ve ever been to. Creative routes that are challenging and fun, and a fantastic/consistent increase in difficulty that allowed for me to push myself in ways I can’t at my home gym. Only downside is I don’t live nearby so I can’t come more often!

Not the setting you hope to see in a 2024 bouldering gym (lots of boulders very linear and not visually attracting to the eye). Poor holds choice, maybe 3-4 nice fiber sets max. It’s kinda dark, the vibe was weird everyone has airpods and didn’t talk to each other. I don’t recommend if you are use to comp style ish boulder with a lot of Volume and some complexity.

I've never been bouldering before so I scheduled an hour beginner's session with Ziggy to learn the basics. He spent close to two hours helping me through each of the courses, giving me tips, and answering all my questions; I learned a month's worth of info in one session. The gym itself was very clean and well organized and wasn't crowded on a Saturday afternoon. It has a weight lifting area and a yoga studio which is free for members.
Also, since the session also came with a day pass, I was allowed to drive up to the Avondale location and spend a few more hours climbing with a rope. I highly recommend both locations and will definitely be returning!

FA Humboldt Park is such a great space. Of all the FA locations and out of all the other climbing gyms in Chicago, FA Humbolt park has a truly special community! That’s not to mention the great setting, the epic slab wall, and the work stations that look out onto the Sunset out of the glass garage doors (the perfect place to watch the sunset and work.) humbolt is definitely my favorite gym in Chicago but I dare you to try it and see for yourself.

My partner and I frequent both the Humboldt and Uptown gyms, and have always had an awesome experience at both.
I love how open and airy the Humboldt location is, which makes it feel a little more open, especially on busier weekends. Staff is always very nice, helpful, and welcoming. Bathrooms/lockers are clean and well stocked.
Also, I appreciate how often routes are reset, which keeps it fun and interesting, while also allowing us to master a problem before it gets replaced.
Thanks FA for an awesome climbing experience!

First Ascent in lovely Humboldt Park is such a gem. The climbing gym is nestled right along Division Street, not too far from the entrance to gorgeous Humboldt Park itself. As soon as you walk inside the spacious warehouse with towering walls, you can't help but feel inspired to climb. So many colorful routes zig zag across the different surfaces, with options for beginners up to the most advanced ascension athletes. I spent over two hours figuring out puzzles along the walls, empowered by the supportive community also tackling the heights. Whether bouldering below or roping up, everyone here pushes each other to new peaks.

After working up a sweat on the artificial cliffs, I had to refuel. Down the street is friendly Pramod's for a hearty thali, or hike over to Maria's for community-sourced pizza. Both spots give you sustenance to then walk it off strolling through Humboldt Park itself. Whether checking out the lagoons or playing a pickup game of soccer in the fields, the park has it all. You'll leave First Ascent and the surrounding 'hood feeling inspired in both body and spirit, ready to take on your next goals. Safe climbing and see you on the walls.

First time coming to this gym location for First Ascent and was really impressed ! To start, there is not an official parking lot but a good amount of street parking in the area. Attached a picture on the front door on good places to park. The gym is very large, as there is 3 full alleys of bouldering and a small gym on the side. the locker rooms are large and there are plenty of free lockers to put your stuff in (they have padlocks on them). there is a wide range of beginner - intermediate and advanced climbs. the staff is friendly and helpful. the community at these gyms are welcoming, as i found it easy to talk to strangers about different routes and encourage eachother. the prices are fair and pretty standard. overall, a well rounded gym and will be coming back !

Nice bouldering gym with a conventional gym area.

Bouldering was mostly slight to medium overhang, an archway section, and a slab wall. Had a spray wall and a campus board area also.

Problems were solid and fun, I was digging them. Problems were labeled on the V scale and felt pretty consistent to other indoor gyms. Not a whole lot of problems above V6 or V7.

The gym uses and lists their problems on Kaya, some had Beta videos. Pretty nice!

Only complaint is that it was quite hot inside.

Shout-out to Adam at the front desk; friendly guy.

We came here as a group with some who already climb as a hobby and it was my first time. Kate at the front desk was friendly and professional and completed my forms and completed the intro with a video with information about climbing.
After signing a waiver and getting Climbing shoes it was time to get ready.
They have lockers to put away clothes and stuff not needed while climbing. They have an area to work out and it includes weights, treadmills, rowers, and more. They also offer group classes in one of the rooms.
Finally, they have a good size place to climb, from easy to difficult and the climbing is leveled.
We were there for about two hours and had fun climbing, if you have never done it, take it easy since you'll work out muscles all over your body.
Free parking on the west side of the side street.
Can sign up for a daily pass as well as monthly.

Amazing, expansive climbing gym with great yoga classes, an awesome community & good fitness center set up. But the thing that makes me so excited to support FA is the staff. They have a trader joe’s vibe going on in which they only hire the kindest people FULL STOP. I’ve had multiple staff members walk me step by step through using the website or perks portal (which I’ve messed up several times). Once I trying to use my points to get a free month and I missed the deadline. I emailed to ask for help and the person I talked to immediately processed my free month, no questions asked. It’s a simple thing, but the FA staff does this sort of thing all the time. One of the staffers even used HIS free guest pass for my broke friend one time. Ya’ll are the best, thank you! 😭

My husband and I came to First Ascent (HP) to try something new for a date… and it was awesome! We took an intro climbing class with Moi and enjoyed every minuteβ€” thank you Moi!! We are thinking of making this active date a regular thing and getting a membership.

The facility was clean, bright, and open. Rentals were in good condition. Staff was kind and informative without being shameful to us newbs. I really loved that there was no pressure to purchase a membership… we were treated like friends, not people to sell to.

We had a great date in this welcoming environment and hope to be back again.

The staff at the welcome desk were so very pleasent and helpful. They got me sorted and in to climb in no time. They even looked for a sticker for me as I like to collect them from the gyms I visit on my travels.

This was my first time bouldering and it was so fun!! The facility is great, clean, and fun. They had a nice training video for a few minutes as well. I recommend anyone wanting to try a new experience to do this! My friend, who is a very experienced climber, is a regular here and loves it too!
