Update: great local gym. I use it largely for weight lifting and doing some admin work in the common area. Really glad they added snacks and energy concessions. Really glad they’ve been adding some equipment (squat safeties, landmine joint, etc). Really great warm community.
Still pretty dusty most of the time. A deep clean would make it 5 stars.

Management, please, please work on the cleanliness of this gym. I want to love it so badly, as it’s close to me and the diversity and community make me feel safe here, but it is dirty! As other reviewers have mentioned, there are piles of dust / dust bunnies around the equipment in the gym and the climbing area consistently smells awful. The smell is bad enough that multiple friends have commented on it. How embarrassing for both me and you. Also, while I love the yoga classes, the grime on the floor of the yoga studio takes away from that. The lack of cleanliness makes me uncomfortable putting my face / head on the mats and props, an often necessary part of yoga practice. In the next couple of months I’m going to decide whether I can go on paying $90 to go here. Please let a miracle happen and let the gym’s cleanliness finally improve!

This place has everything you need for strengthening and lengthening. Bunch of classes spanning from yoga to Bouldering, and the morning HIIT class. There's space for deadlifts, powerlifts, bench press, and machinery for your leg days. Don't worry about the people so much. Go get those gains and for conditioning.

I rotate first ascent locations every week. I go to block 37 one week, humbolt another and uptown on third week. I used to really like uptown but they don’t update their routes often at all. I went to uptown 4 weeks ago and I just visited a few days ago again and the routes were the same. Please change the routes.

Update 2024-11: The gym is very dirty. There's dust collecting on most surfaces; terrible for allergies. It's been this way all of 2024. The value of this gym keeps decreasing and they never addressed the calibration of the weight equipment.

Original review: The weight lifting machines are not calibrated right. For a gym as expensive as this you'd expect that at least. General cleanliness isn't up to the price point either; it's dirtier than LA fitness and that subscription is less than a third of the price at FA. The value at this gym is by far the staff being so friendly and good at building community, which is ironic since they're grossly underpaid.

Excellent climbing gym with friendly staff. With multiple gyms in the Chicago area there will always be new routes to try. The gyms change their routes consistently and give a good variety of difficulty levels. All the gyms have a good variety of exercise equipment and multiple types of exercise and climbing classes to choose from. The gym also offers fun monthly activities! All the staff I have interacted with there have been very helpful and friendly. Want to preface by saying I think the staff and the setting at the gym are great! The staff are SO friendly and welcoming.

This review is strictly about upkeep. This gym is really really REALLY dirty. There are piles of dirt and dust bunnies under every piece of equipment in the workout area. I get chalk is a hazard of being in a climbing gym, but this isn't just climbing chalk. The bouldering gym itself is also gross. Again, it just seems like the place doesn't have a cleaning staff or doesn't address cleanliness at all.

The windows are gross, the bathrooms aren't clean, and the work out space just feels gross, with piles of dirt under everything. I've climbed in a bunch of gyms so I'm used to chalk dust, this is an extra special brand of ew. There are piles of dirt under every piece of equipment that isn't regularly moved. It seems like equipment and free weights never get wiped down. All of the mats are disgusting. This has been a recurring complaint on this page, and I've been climbing here on and off for over a year. I haven't seen the cleanliness get any better. I've gone in first thing in the morning, and the space is just as gross as it is in the evening.

90$ is a lot to pay to work out in an excessively dirty gym! The reason I canceled my membership initially was because it felt like too much money to pay to feel like I was breathing in dirt in my free time. My guess is that they aren't paying staff enough, or giving them enough time and pay to clean correctly. In all the gym spaces I've been too (climbing or not) this one is by far the grossest. Please PLEASE start cleaning this gym!

FA Uptown was the first climbing gym I ever visited, and the one that got me to fall in love with climbing. It also holds a special place in my heart because the space used to house Borders Bookstore, once upon a time long long ago, where I often went as a kid and teen to read books and listen to music. It's a very cool space with giant windows overlooking the heart of Uptown. The climbing gym itself is well designed and spacious, with a variety of walls. It's arguably the hardest bouldering gym in Chicago, and where you go train if you're pretty serious about the sport. There are always lots of good solid boulders to choose from. There are also really good yoga classes (Tomoko is the best yoga instructor I've ever had), and a gym downstairs for training. It's a crunchy, authentic local climbing gym that will kick your butt and humble you. I'm gonna give the gym 5 stars because at its core, it nails what it's doing, but I do wish the fitness area had a little more variety and more space to train and I'll take this to my grave: I wish there was a sauna.

The First Ascent climbing gyms in Chicago are some of the best in the business. I especially appreciate that they are consistent with updating their boulders and routes, that they provide ample space for cardio and strength training, and the yoga classes they offer at all of their gyms. I enjoy all the Chicago First Ascent locations, but Uptown is terrific because it has a fun overhang bridge as well as a great slab wall. It's clean and they recently replaced the mats. Even on busy nights, I always find street parking. I think the grading is accurate or maybe just a little bit soft, but the problems themselves are extremely interesting and creative which makes it SUPER FUN! And everyone is friendly! Can you put a peg climbing thingy like the one at Avondale?

**** EDIT
I have been coming here for over a year as a member now and my review stands. I can’t express how amazing the FA community is and how hard the team works to make a welcoming environment and host tons of cool events for meeting people. This is the bouldering gym to come to (all the other FA gyms are great too) and there are some really unique routes with how the gym is laid out. My respect to the hard worker setters for that !

One of the best bouldering gyms i have been to as someone who is more new / intermediate to bouldering. first, the staff is always so welcoming and kind when you walk in. the prices are pretty reasonable and they have lockers where you can keep your stuff. they have a weight gym, a bouldering gym and a yoga studio. the bouldering gym is a pretty good size and they seem to frequently change the routes. there is a wide range of routes and even the ones that are there for awhile, they are creative and fun to do again. they have classes that i have yet to try but they are available. also a bonus is the regulars are all pretty friendly and helpful too ! I always have a great experience at first ascent and definitely will keep coming here.

This is a very unique gym. There are tons of windows. The walls are not super tall. There is tons of overhang. The routesetting is very creative and challenging. The grades are accurate. The front desk staff are very nice.

The routesetting is very good, however, many of the holds are polished. They use good quality holds, but some are old. There is not much fiberglass in this gym. Many boulder problems are very chossy. There are not adequate brushes around the gym.

Overall an amazing spot with tons of natural light and very unique overhang areas including roof climbs, which is very rare to find in bouldering gyms. Gym is 10/10 A+ and would definitely visit again next time in the area!

If you like bouldering, this gym is for you. The facility is very clean with abundant bouldering walls, and everyone here is friendly. There are no top ropes so even though the gym itself advertises less space than other First Ascent locations, it actually has way more surface area dedicated to free climbing/bouldering. The paths are also appropriately leveled and diverse so it's an incredible experience for absolute beginners and more advanced climbers alike.

I love First Ascent and each gym provides something unique on top of their high standard of polite and friendly staff. Plenty of space to use weights, yoga classes and place to stretch, moonboard, space to chill and work, WiFi included, lockers, clean bathrooms -- although only a few changing rooms by the lockers which are away from the bathrooms. Very fun upside-down climbs & this particular gym has unique setters (like the others!) who have done some really fun horizontal climbs on a few occasions. Really awesome test in patience & technique. Another place with problems that are lessons in and of itself.

There is so much to love about this gym! The community (of staff and climbers) are welcoming, the routes are varied and interesting and a few are changed every week, so there's always something new to try. I've been climbing weekly here for about 18 months.

However, I'm thinking of looking for a new bouldering gym, because ... this one has gotten dirty. I'm not talking about chalk.
A few months ago they changed the cleaning schedule and all of a sudden there are dust bunnies everywhere. In particular, if you fall off a route and land on a mat, your weight will cause a huge puff of air to shoot out from the crease between the mat and the wall, which shoots all the dirt and dust bunnies up into the air all around you. So you're lying on the ground, breathing hard, and all this dust has just been stirred up into the air.

I've tried to address this with staff and by submitting comments in the comment box and through their online portal, and nothing has changed :-(

I love the variety of routes and spacious climbing area. People are all very nice. Good music.

My only real complaint is that it’s dirty. The common areas, stretching mats, and yoga room need a major mop. What’s going on with the gunk on the bathroom dryer and the chalk all over the water fountain? It’s also odd that they don’t have a sink outside of the bathroom for chalky hands and no locker rooms for changing, though I do understand those are structural challenges. But Keeping the place clean should be a basic priority.

Facility is nice. Gonna be honest here: the setting was bad across the board. Speaking of board…The moonboard is almost impossible to sit start without dabbing because of the way the pad is tapered into the kickboard. Final straw is that they have no protein bars/drinks.

Response: I couldn’t find any bars/drinks with more than 8g of protein. Y’all should really consider getting something with at least 15-20g.

Setting is great, it’s just not changed often. Because of this, most holds are often dirty. I asked on their instagram and they informed me that setting isn’t that prioritized (probably because they have a lot of locations throughout the city?). Gym area is okay, it’s often messy and dirty (mats thrown everywhere, people don’t seem to wipe after every use). Whole place generally smells like feet and the bathroom needs some upkeep. Excellent experience! I took the beginners class and the teacher was fantastic. Made it feel easy, even though I was so new to climbing.

Also the huge beautiful windows are great for climbing in the cold winter while we can't be outside!!

As a beginner I was nervous of being judged in too serious of an environment, I also didn’t know how kid friendly it would be, but First Ascent went above and beyond my expectations for both! Everyone was positive and friendly and helpful, it seems the climbing/bouldering community is such a safe/delightful, warm and supportive one. Also it was very kid friendly, I was able to introduce my 6 year old to bouldering, the quick 5 minute training video prepared us well, and he really absorbed and listened to the safety instructions. There were easy practice spaces, and once we started getting our footing, we had fun for hours! Would do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks, First Ascent!!

Nice place. Only downside is that they only have bouldering and no full size walls. But every time i went the place wasn't crowded, and they had plenty of routes for all levels

Super nice place to climb walls in a relaxing environment. All levels are available and instructors are available to help. You will get a workout in short time and you will build your upper body strength and stamina long term. Climbing here is like solving 3D puzzles in space and time and getting a workout.

I climbed for the first time early morning on a weekday. The space was calm and quiet. The Red Line hovered across the windows from time to time and basically I faced a sprawling wall covered with bits of broken hard candy. These are labeled and color coordinated by level for beginners like me or seasoned members like my friend. The experience was fun and exclusive, like having a birthday party room all to yourself. With unlimited turns. Once you find the right level of difficulty, you climb the candy to the ceiling and back down. Not as easy as it seems and not as hard either. Highly recommended!
