The Kishwaukee Family YMCA offers a variety of programs and services. Here is a basic outline of just some of the ways we serve our community.
The Kishwaukee Family YMCA addresses the most pressing challenges of the diverse population we serve. We do this by providing a broad range of accessible, effective and quality programs to address a variety of ongoing and emerging individual and community needs. All of these programs are anchored in the YMCA's philosophy of personal growth in spirit, mind and body. Building upon our charitable heritage, financial assistance ensured those who need the YMCA most β from all backgrounds and income levels β were able to benefit.

The facility itself is very nice, but the staff are disinterested in their jobs and rude to customers.

This post is long overdue. My mother and I walk and jog the track here. One day, a hockey game was going on. As we walked past, an older teenage kid yelled out to his friend to get his attention, then made monkey sounds. I stopped to see which kid it was, but I only heard a name being called. I spoke out about it aloud for whomever to hear. I went to the manager who directed me to the director of sports. I demanded action be taken to teach this kid a lesson. NOTHING was done about it. Nobody got back to me on the result of this incident. I had to track the director down in person. The director "supposedly" spoke to the coach. I was lied to and given a sorry excuse on why the boy did it. Something else should have been done. I pay my membership for this behavior to be brushed off. His parents are proud, I'm sure. I doubt he would have made those sounds to a man. Low and cowardly to target an elderly woman especially. Shame on the Y. I will be keeping my money from now on and going elsewhere.

Just had to cancel my membership for this gym. I liked it, it was alright. Overpriced. The big issue for me was the lap pool. It was hardly ever opened, and only opened at times not ideal to those who are busy early morning.

I posted a bad review on the ymca about how Zachary didnβt want to help me with a return for a late fee that was charged to me. I have to admit my mistakes when I was wrong, and after deeper investigation Zachary was right, and my bank was responsible for me having a late fee, not the YMCA . So I apologize for my misconceptions of Zachary and your customer service skills. Zachary is a great staff member. π

No idea why the hate, this is a nice gym! And they have a lot to offer that no one else does. Seriously take a tour of this place and you will realize you should not go to another gym in the area.

yes, I have to give some advice to the gym, but one thing I don't like is that there is almost no time to use the pool. We are usually told that we can't use the pool during classes.

The KishYMCA has been my workout space for several years now, and I am grateful for the committed efforts of group/team workout leaders, personal trainers, and desk staff for their quality service as well as genuine helpfulness and friendliness. The machines, weights, and other equipment in the Wellness center are well-maintained, modern, and quickly repaired or replaced when needed, and the overall room (as is the whole facility) is clean and well-organized. They updated the locker rooms a few years ago to more contemporary standards with better lighting, carpet, wood-paneled lockers (as available or ones you can rent for a period of time), nicer individualized showers, and saunas as well as steam rooms. I understand the pre-school and the separate child care space/program are both well-run and clean, and that they have quality volunteer programs, swim lessons, and summer or holiday vacation/afterschool programs that seem popular (and fun for the kids). They have a huge arena fit for hockey, indoor soccer, and basketball (open gym times and for kids sports events). Nice spaces for racquetball as well. I know they have a top-notch swim team (as well as a nice pool for it). I do feel like their progress in advancing new services has slowed since the pandemic--possibly b/c it seems membership has fallen and also due to labor shortages (temporary problems, hopefully). Hours are convenient, and the membership fees are reasonable for access to a diverse array of work out experiences (this is to be contrasted with cheaper fitness centers that offer only limited services like weights and treadmills). I get an employee discount for working with NIU, and I think there may be other discounts for other employees you should inquire about. Parking is good, except for when there are swim teams that consume MOST of the spaces. They used to block off space with a minder for gym members, but I have not seen that in a while. Overall, this is a good place to workout.

This is the worst place to send your kid to for almost any program. The before and after school as well. All staff is unorganized, and no one seems to have a clue as to whatβs going one you speak to someone one day and think things is settled and BAM next week itβs not. My friends who have kids also experienced the same problems. Just always keep record and have whoever you speak to write down and initial what they are saying to you.

First time back in 15 months. Place was clean as a whistle. My locker was just as I left it. Sauna and steam was open. Towel service rolling. Pool was open. People are so friendly and helpful. Kate was closing for first time and helping everybody. Jordan was the lifeguard and going out of his way to help us and others. Was a special night for my 7 yr old grand niece, who swam the entire length of the pool and the treaded water for 60 seconds!!! She was practicing for a swimming test tomorrow. YMCA has family rooms with showers, which was great for her to use on her own while I waited outside door. Thank you YMCA for being such a great quality and trusted family oriented institution!

I have used many gyms and this is far the most expensive. I signed up to use their heated pool because of the arthritis through out my body. All of a sudden I am told I can only use the pool at very inconvenient times. They said they have classes and even with those that have small amount of people I am not allowed to use the pool. They did tell me for more money I can take a class. I am already paying around $50 a month plus $75 to join. Then another $20 a month for a class. They then told me to use the lap pool which has no stairs and is not heated. With arthritis the cold water causes the joints to become even more painful and with arthritis in the knees I canβt use the ladder. They pretty much told me tough luck and they can do nothing for me.

Very filthy installations, nobody ever clean equipment or locker rooms. Also pool its busy all times with events, lessons, events same apply for running track its busy too with some other events, another workout locations only open some times. You would think itβs a nice place but you cannot use all installations all the time, if you are lucky once in while. Not worth it.

Love the staff and all the activity choices. Something that could be better is the "adult" locker rooms I brought my family in there and we were told not to come in there again by someone who didn't even work there. After swimming lessons we went back in there to get our things and yet again we were told, by the same lady, not to be in there. But the ironic thing is that we were told by someone on staff there that is was okay for us to change in there. My point in saying this is people need to chill out its not like we brought boys in the women's locker room.

I've been a member here for a few months. The place is nice and tidy, feels a little cramped during high traffic times, but I guess it's a good thing people like to exercise π
I do wish the fitness room was a little more bigger so people doing stretches and yoga would feel more comfortable, sometimes I feel like I might accidentally step on someone.
Overall, nice place. Love the variety of things to do.

This place is so bad. We followed there rules and they still kicked us out. Maybe they should get smarter people and know how to put words together that way they tell us the right instructions. Then next time we wonβt be confused. They said this is a warning and then kicked us out. This place sucks.

I have been a member here for almost 1 year. We have a family membership and I use the facility 3 times per week and my kids use it 1 or 2 times per week. The facility is in good shape with recent updates to the reception areas. This facility has a decent gym with free weights, machines, ellipticals, treadmills, stair machines, rowing machines, lap pool, recreation pool, indoor track, indoor field, basketball, racquetball court, new cross training room, and childcare area. The staff here is very friendly, helpful, and very safety conscious. We have made a decision to renew our yearly membership based on our experiences.

They segregate people with children away from locker rooms into 5 small rooms and there is little if any space for parents woth children to change. I brought my 19 month old daughter into the womens locker room and a zumba instructor screamed and bullied me. The manager tried to justify it saying children are a theft risk. At 19 months? A toddler? Really? They have great saunas and work out rooms and friendly staff at kid zone.
