This facility is very clean and well laid out. It’s organized and spaced out very well. The staff is kind and helpful, it feels like a place accessible to all, the employees treat you the same whether you’re a gym bunny/bro or a beginner. My favorite part though? The view! Who doesn’t love a beautiful view of Chicago when you workout.

I lost a couple of dollars today at the vending machine. When I brought this up to, Kallie, apparently a manager, she did not seemed concerned. I asked if there was a way to get my money back. And she said “Not right now, no” and she walked away. I talked to her about a week or so ago about the bathrooms and how disgusting they were. She also did not seemed concerned. She said she would take a look at them. There’s hair everywhere. I literally gagged when I went to look at them a few weeks ago. And have not been to the bathrooms here since. After these two run ins with management, I think I just need to find a new fitness franchise all together because honestly it doesn’t matter what location you go to. They all could care less.

I extremely disappointed with management, the vending Machine was not working and they knew it wasn’t working and multiple people were charged without any compensation. Female manager and emo employee started laughing and giggling and making fun of me when I brought this up. Very disrespectful and terrible management. Do not recommend this place.

Super sad Xsport near Mariano’s closed so I was forced to come here due to location and transfer of my yoga class/ instructor. They offer no trial passes for new guests or people looking to try the place out, outdated equipment, pool closed frequently and sales team is the worst. It’s funny to me because you would think that’s their main goal, but they don’t call back or return any messages that are even left in person. Music also sucks. Don’t recommend

Warning for LA Fitness members (2836 N. Clark St.) 🚨

Right next to the LA Fitness here is Century Centre Self Park. Do NOT park there.

I was inside the gym for just two hours and was charged $20. This is pure exploitation — they know people come for the gym and they trap you with absurd rates.

This place deserves 0 stars:
• Predatory pricing
• Zero transparency
• Designed to rip people off

⚠️ If you go to LA Fitness at this location → find street parking or another garage. Don’t let them scam you like they did me.

Edit: The pool and elevator have been fixed. Gym continues to be busy but not nearly as bad as it was a few months ago.

I’ve been going to this gym for over 10 years and recently it’s gotten really bad. Elevator has been broken for over a year, so the gym relies on the parking garage elevator only. The garage elevator goes out frequently, meaning you have to walk up 7 flights of stairs to get to the gym. Plumbing has been hit or miss lately, leaving no water, no bathrooms, nothing. Pool has been closed for over 6 months.

LA Fitness bought the XSport gym 2 blocks away and closed it earlier this month, creating a new member overload on the 2828 location that is nearly unbearable. I go during off hours and it’s super busy. I can’t imagine how horrible it is during peak hours. Avoid this gym if you can. It’s obvious LA fitness doesn’t care about this location, at all.

Maybe I’m missing the machines or they really do have a poor amount of them. One lat pulldown? One smith machine? No cable row? I’m only using this gym temporarily but it pales in comparison to the other LA fitness near my home. I feel like i have to change my whole routine due to their poor selection of equipment.

The pool and the sauna are once again closed. This seems to be a constant at this gym. Went to swim but couldn't so opted for only a cold shower as there wasn't any hot water at 4 pm. The wooden benches in the men's locker all need to be refinished. Too numerous butt splitters from sitting on them over the years. Managers seem to be more interested in looking at their cell phones for God only knows maybe another hookup. The crap rap music which is constantly playing makes this place feel ghetto. It's on life support. I give it one more year.

This L.A fitness is by far the WORSE gym. Inside gym its like a VERY low grade park district from the 1918. Super old & gross lots of mold spots & Pool & Jacuzzi don't work & not open. Any park district gym from any city or any area would be a upgrade from this spot. Toilets & bathrooms are like what your grandparents would have had in elementary school. ON TOP OF THIS YOU WILL PAY $8.00- $40.00 TO PARK! There is NO free street parking. Stay away from: L.A Fitness @ 2828 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60657

6/23 UPDATE: Pool and hot tub are closed again :/ was nice for 2.5 months while it lasted.

EDIT: The pool / hot tub finally reopened after over a year of it being mysteriously closed. Both elevators have been working as well. Whoever the last manager was during that year must've been fired, because I'm already noticing some repairs and small improvements. We'll see how long this lasts.

Do not be fooled by the five star reviews. At best, they seem suspicious. I am not a paid bot. I have been a member at this gym for years, and to see it take such a nosedive this past year is shocking.

It is clear with their purchase of XSport that they do have the money to fix things, they just choose not to.

There is no pool. Well, there is, except it's been closed since March of 2024 (so over a year now) due to “maintenance”. I can never get an answer on when it'll reopen, except that it might be open "next week" or "next month". The newest excuse is they're trying to get permits for the pool. So in other words, it means they failed health codes severely enough for it to be shut down for months.

Funnily enough, I contacted IDPH and they said the gym never reached out to them to submit their permits. I’d have more respect for the gym if they were just upfront about cutting maintenance costs as opposed to lying continuously to its members.

Update 2025

Pool issue? Politics straight up politics. Wasn't the club or the management It was the city. Nonetheless the pool's open yay. Imo one of the best clubs in the city.

Great pool. Hot sauna. Roomie.
Not too crowded. So if you read this don't come to this club.

Management and staff are really nice at most all of these. Including this one.

Update 7/14/23

Pool has been down for over 3 months...

Update 11/23
Pool is amazing now. Crystal Clear water and very warm.

I see people mentioning old lockers. One of the best reasons to come to this gym is they have the old metal lockers. The other LA fitness have pressboard lockers easily broken into. I had all my clothes stolen downtown.

Some really great views of the city. You can work out and look out over downtown and the West. Unmentioned bonus.

Sauna now down for over 3 weeks. What gives?

Update 4/21/23
Pool has been warmer lately.

POOL IS ALWAYS FREEZING. What happened it used to be warm. Good gym otherwise. Staff is friendly.

Update 4/30/2025: (upgrading to 4 stars)
The hot water is FINALLY working again after they replaced the water heater.
The gym could still benefit from some updates (equipment: adequate sets of lighter dumbbells and box jumps - Space: general refresh such as paint, modernizing the locker rooms) which I'm hoping will get done at some point.

******

Update 4/22/2025 and downgrade from 2 to 1 star rating:
I'm glad that the pool is finally open again after more than a year, however, the hot water has been unavailable for over a week now.
The irony is that per sign, you are required to "take a hot, soapy shower before entering the pool area". Well, I'd really like to shower with warm water, before AND after my swim. Whoever is "managing" this location needs to get fired.
Hot water being out for a few hours or even a day might be acceptable, but for over a week, ABSOLUTELY NOT!

*******

I joined this gym in January for the main purpose of having a regular size lap pool (25 meters or yards) in walking distance for my triathlon training. The club manager told me mid of December that the pool would be back open by late of January. Apparently, they lost their permit. Now we are approaching mid of February and they pushed the opening out to late Feb/early March. I understand this has to do with city permits, but I'd think that with enough persistence this could have been handled a lot faster. In the meantime, I'm forced to drive to other locations.

Also, it seems like there are just not enough "lighter" dumbbells. There are supposed to be 3 sets each of the 20lbs and 25lbs on the rack, but I've never seen more than 1 pair each, even during off hours. Can you guys please add additional pairs? Otherwise, people are forced to wait for a long time to do their exercises.

The large space of this gym really has a lot of potential for improvements with proper management.

★ 1

This is my main gym during the week. I'm usually there in the mornings, so the crowd isn't bad but has gotten more crowded since they decided to close the Broadway location. The gym is large and has a mix of old and newer equipment.

The location is pretty clean, I see the maintenance crew deep cleaning the men's showers at least once a week.

This location is on the 7th floor of a run down mall. There are two elevators to get to the gym and one has been broken since last year. The pool and the hot tub have also been closed for months, with no signs of reopening.

I edited this review and dropped this place down to 1 star. After nearly a year and a half, the pool and hot tub are still not working. One of the elevators has been broken for probably close to 2 years at this point. The newest problem with this piece of garbage gym is water. There was no water whatsoever for 2 days last week (this is the second time this has happened in a few months). 3 days later, they still have no hot water. In addition, one of the locks to the bathroom stall in the men’s locker room is ripped off, effectively making it useless. This gym is falling apart and they clearly just don’t care about anything.

2 weeks with no hot water. They changed the sign to just say it’s “unavailable.” I asked at the front and told it was very expensive to fix, which frankly, is not my problem. This is a big national chain, they need to figure it out. Hot water is such a basic “amenity,” there’s no way it should take this long to fix unless management just doesn’t care, which is clearly the case. Ironically, the pool and hot tub are finally open, but since there’s no hot water, I see people just going in without washing off first, so it’ll probably be closed again soon enough due to contamination.

4.23.25 - now the sauna is broken. This gym is falling apart, please save your money and go elsewhere.

Also notice they only respond to positive reviews, further solidifying their apathy towards our concerns.

I’ve been working out at this location 3-5x a week for 12+ years, and I’m down to my last good nerve with the steadily declining condition of this place. It was derelict and aging when I joined, and it’s only gotten worse with time. A textbook case of corporate greed and indifference.

If you live in the area you have basically no other affordable option nearby, and it’s VERY clear LA Fitness Corporate is aware and has no incentive to improve. Whatever private equity group owns Century Center puts as little money as possible into care of the building.

At least when the X-Sport was nearby, you could arrive in the afternoon and have your pick of equipment. Even during peak hours, the crowding was reasonable. Since LA bought them and immediately shuttered most locations (including the nearby one on Broadway) this is no longer the case. They’ve brought none of the nicer equipment from that X-Sport to this location, and the overcrowding has made it a miserable place to attempt a workout.

If you’re new here, let me give you a rundown on what’s been the norm for at least the last decade:

– This used to be a Bally’s, and the majority of the equipment is from that era. LA bought them out in 2011, so you can imagine how much rust and grime has accumulated in the time since then. The locker rooms have also received not a single update.

– Free weights are all mismatched, and no one puts anything back where it goes (which would require ANY sort of organization being laid out by management in the first place). When you need something, you will spend more time searching for it than exercising. There aren’t enough D-handles for the cable equipment, and other attachments regularly migrate between floors. Same with foam rollers. If you want lower weight dumbbells, I wish you luck. There are maybe two sets each of 20lb and 25lb dumbbells in the whole gym and people regularly take one and leave the other on the floor somewhere. Apparently, they have been unable to afford additional sets for well over a decade now. That said – if you are capable of lifting dumbbells over 60lbs, those are ABUNDANT and take up most of the available rack space (unused, of course).

– There is a ton of wasted space roped off away from use, primarily the personal training area which you aren’t allowed to access even if trainers aren’t present. Equipment that would be wonderful to use elsewhere (kettlebells, boxes, TRX bands, etc) are off limits. Things that are meant for the free weight area also regularly migrate to the roped off areas and won’t re-appear unless someone ignores the staff and takes them back.

– Get used to staple amenities being completely out of service. The pool and spa are regularly down, most recently for about a full year due to permitting issues. If you’re a swimmer, get ready to be disappointed on the regular. Also brace yourself for surprise ice-cold showers, because the hot water will sometimes go out (most recently for the last full week and counting).

– You will regularly see plastic buckets left out to catch steady drips of filthy water from the ceiling, especially if it has rained recently or snow is melting. Likely outside of their control, as whoever owns Century Center refuses to take care of the actual building.

– Also likely Century Center’s fault, but prepare for elevators being regularly out of service. Typically, every so often only one will be functioning. This was recently the case for over a year. If that one goes out, your warm-up will be taking seven flights of stairs. Stunning.

Like I said, if there were an affordable gym with a shower anywhere nearby I would RUN to sign up. Alas, this is across the street from my job and free to me through my health insurance so it’s always been (almost not quite) worth putting up with the pitiable condition of the place. The audacity and greed, however, of purchasing the practically brand new X-Sport down the street only to close it and force everyone to downgrade in droves to this dump has me chugging haterade. I beg you, work out LITERALLY anywhere else.

Talk about a downgrade!! I was excited that L.A. fitness bought out X-Sport giving me location options because I travel all over the city and Midwest for work. HOWEVER, besides the L.A fitnesses that were already L.A. Fitness I have not seen any visible improvements in any gym. I've in fact seen them get worse, and this location is probably the WORSE!!! The previous location on Broadway was clean, updated with newer machines. The only downfall was that it was tiny. This new location is less to be desired. Yes it's bigger but there's a cost. The locker rooms are absolutely horrid!! Several METAL lockers had busted handles, completely rusted all inside and completely worn down. The showers are no longer private, there is no sauna or steam room. The ceiling has accumulated dust for years and it looks like there is mold in certain spots. The toilet area is completely disgusting with toilets stained with you know what! I asked the front desk if there was any plans to upgrade or remodel the locker room and he said he heard they were going to paint the lockers... Like what, that's it? I don't event want to shower here before work

Though there are a lot more machine options that completely appreciated, they only have one Smith machine with supported tracks. I love doing squats but need the support tracks because I do squats to absolute failure and I don't want to be that guy that drops weights on himself. All in all, if they updated the locker rooms, changed the florescent lighting, and have more smith machine options, I would change my rating.

The workout equipment is fine and there's a lot of space. It's older but kept reasonably clean.

The problem is that the pool has been closed for over a year -- a big problem when you swim for cardio exercise.

For a year there have been various explanations and promises of the pool opening -- but it never does. Deadlines are set, and missed. And it is clear that we have been lied to because the explanations for why the pool is closed changes every few weeks, often contradicting earlier claims.

I've had to start going to a public pool, so I'm unhappy that I'm still paying my membership dues to LA Fitness.

I recently visited this LA Fitness location and was thoroughly disappointed. The lighting here is unbearably harsh, more reminiscent of a sterile hospital than a welcoming gym. The equipment is shockingly outdated, barely holding up to even a basic workout, and the locker room is downright disgusting. It's evident that this location desperately needs a total renovation. What makes it even more frustrating is that LA Fitness closed down the far superior Xsport location down the street, yet they've made no effort to improve this branch. Compared to their other spots, this gym is a clear case of neglect

I started going to this gym after LA bought Xsport. This location is distinctly worse than the xsport they shut down (because it is obviously cheaper).

Equipment is old. When I switched gyms, I asked the staff and manager multiple times to get the Concept 2 rowing machines from the Xsport since the rowing machines LA has are straight up bad. Lo and behold they never got them and “all the stuff from the old location had been auctioned off”

This gym has older equipment, management clearly isn’t allocated much $ by corporate, and the pool which as other reviews have said, is always 1-2 months from being fixed.

Also the fluorescent lighting makes the place just have weird vibes. Nothing gets you in the workout mood like a flickering tube light right above you while you’re benching.

Edit to add one star back: Frankly a lot of my complaints are more aimed at corporate, and I’ve been told the rowing machines are on their way. the pool is still closed though

This gym is awful! I can’t believe they closed the amazing XSport location and left this one open. Nothing works, and there’s no free parking.

I joined late last year and the pool has been closed the entire time. Same with the hot tub. They are filled with water though, and sometimes people just ignore the signs and swim anyway. I guess they don’t want to pay the insurance bill. Lockers are rusty. No steam room. Xsport was way nicer. Too bad they bought the broadway location just to shut it down.

LA Fitness bought my gym, then closed it. Now I have to go to this gym with a broken pool, broken elevators, broken equipment, and so many members that there's lines of people waiting for equipment. And why on earth would any gym close at 7:00 pm on the weekends?

Awful decisionmaking that shows LA Fitness does not care about customers.

I’ve gone here since 2013, the staffs friendly and not pushy about getting personal trainers. There’s a constant cleaning crew working to keep the place nice. When it’s not New Year’s resolution time the gyms only packed on 5-7pm Monday and Tuesday nights. The pools been hit or miss but because of inspectors timing not LA’s lack of trying. There’s ample equipment and room to get privacy and work out in peace. For a $1 a day it’s way better than $237 a month Equinox or Fitness 19 which has less equipment and amenities. They also have pretty solid hours, I wish it were 24/7 but I digress.

Scummy organization. No issue with the facility. But if you want go elsewhere it’s a 40 day notice you must provide before cancelling which must be sent by certified mail (for those who don’t know this is an additional charge). I will never join an LA Fitness again given all the hoops they make you go through when you change gyms.

Decent variety of lifting equipment but that’s about it. Switched over to this gym when they abruptly closed the much nicer broadway location in Dec (made zero sense for them to close this location). Dirty locker rooms here and just a nasty facility overall that gets extremely busy. No basketball court either. Truly recommend going somewhere else.

Went to this LA fitness to redeem the 3 days pass. When i approached the desk to the lady asked for my ID then proceeded to tell me how i can’t get the pass because it’s out of state even though there is nothing on the website about it. After that she ask had i been to LA fitness before which i stated when i was minor in 2009 before i had an ID. She then proceeds to say i can give you this day but i’m going to hold your id she did not bother to look at the email i received about the pass or even go over pricing with me as i was there to find a new gym to go to having just moved to the area (hence the out of state id). Safe to say i won’t be back it. Vibe was off from the jump cleanliness is lacking and staff seem to just want you to get out of there face as quickly as possible.

Don't bother. Dirty.

UPDATE: Still dirty. Pool is still closed after 8 months. Sorry to dash the hopes of the optimists, this place isn't getting any better .

Trying to cut costs constantly and never replace rusty, torn equipment. Company is terrible to their members, buying nearby gyms then closing them.

I love this location. Spacious, no wait for any type of equipment. A lot of air, not hot inside like at the Edgewater location. Close to shops, groceries and coffee shop’s after workout. Works for me!

Good space, lots of equipment. Biggest issues are they only have a one or two of some very common equipment, meaning you’ll almost never get to use it. Nearby xsport closed so now this LA fitness is the most crowded gym I’ve ever been to, just not worth it. Find another nearby gym, you’ll save a lot of annoying time spent waiting for others to finish their workouts

I’ve been a member at this location off and on for 13 years and they have not updated the facility or any of the equipment since it was Ballys in the early 2010’s. I’ve been to plenty of other locations and this one is completely neglected. Furthermore, now that LA acquired Xsport, this location is twice as packed at all hours of the day with no chance of you getting a complete workout. Neglect, poor planning, messy club, greedy. Hopefully that answers your question in the comment below 😁

This gym is very much okay. I mostly go for the classes which are great, but they should really add more. Every time I take a spin class it’s fully crowded and they have to turn away a bunch of people at the door. They also got rid of the wipes to wipe down the machines before and after class which is really strange. The elevator has been broken the entire time I’ve gone here, and the gym is on the 7th floor so you either have to wait in line to squeeze into one small elevator with a bunch of other sweaty people OR do 7 flights of steps before or after a work out….. the location is outdated and dirty (mainly the locker rooms. I would feel gross showering here ). It is pretty spacious with lots of machines, but don’t even bother during peak hours. If it weren’t for the classes and being down the block from my apartment, I wouldn’t go here, but for a good price it’s convenient if that’s what you’re looking for.

Horrible gym. The elevator has been broken for over a year. The pool failed an inspection and has been closed for 4 months. It is always super busy. There is a line for the treadmills everyday. They should replace the 20 ellipticals that no one uses and put in more treadmills but management is incompetent. Machines get broken all the time, just for a “part ordered” sign to be up for a month. The decision making on what machines to have is horrible . The machines are so out of date. They have duplicates of the bad machines while only having one of the good machines. Also, a guy just got caught pleasuring himself in the sauna. Horrible gym.

I recommend not to choose a personal training. I started personal training last month and i did not like it and wanted to cancel it. Unfortunately, the manager says there is no way to cancel the membership because it was agreed to 6 months strictly. They don’t give me other options , just keep saying there is no way to cancel it. But in the beginning NOBODY mentioned about that. The first person who introduced me about personal trainer was Michael. I wanted to talk to Michael but they do not transfer me to Michael. I don’t want to continue with my personal training in this situation but they don’t cancel my subscription, I will not recommend personal training

This location is interesting. You can tell is older but it's also bigger than downtown and feels new in alot of ways. Here you have all the things you typically have at LA but also indoor dining track and some squash ball courts as well. It's a bit hard to find as it's tucked in the mall on the 7th floor. Beautiful views of the city though. And the machines can be taken up as is a busy location but still good.

It is very incovenient to get to and is highly over crowded. Only 1 elevator is working to get to gym in the first place. The men's locker room is quite big but feels VERY run down and a bit dirty. Lockers could also be bigger especially in winter to accomodate large coats and bulky winter clothing.

Although there is quite a bit of selection for free weights and machines, everything seems to be very worn and rusty.

I took a cycling class and the sound system was so bad I could not understand the instructor. Also the bike gears kept slipping.

I also dont like how the pool is the center of the gym and if you were to use it, all eyes would be on you; very unappleaing, however when I've been there no one has been using it.

Overall the facility could be amazing but lack of upkeep keeps it from being great.

The pool is rarely open. I left this gym to go to Lakeview XSport fitness because that pool is functional and the gym was 24/7. Unfortunately, LA Fitness bought XSport and closed the nearby gym. So, we get this gym that was last renovated in the 80s. But, the main problems are that this gym's pool rarely works and it doesn't open until late in the morning on weekends.

I came from out of to paid to park went into the gym to find signs that Say no hot water, The pool is closed and other out of orders signs. There was a sense of complacency when I dressed management about it, but I understand there’s not much a floor manager can do. However, LA Fitness is derelict in their duty to provide a reputable and appropriate place to work out as their clients pay them for it is absolutely unacceptable to have a place that has this many issues and people pay you to have a different club experience. I wind up, leaving right back out after paying for parking Because I wanted to swim.

Genuinely not sure how this location is able to be open right now. Not only was the elevator down and you had to take the steps if you wanted to work out (7 flights) but I asked where the water fountain was for them to tell me "we don't have water right now" then to say "buy we do have water you can buy in the vending machines". The locker rooms are super out of date. I only decided to come here since my home gym on Broadway closed last week. Super disappointed and I guess I'll have to just go the extra distance and go to the one on Elston instead. The only "positive" is this is finally a location with adequate cleaning supplies for you to wipe down the machine but that should be standard across gyms. Staff was friendly

I really wish the parking was free after validation. It upsets me that I now pay $7 a day ($35-$49 per week) to park after LA fitness closed the Broadway location with free parking. I’m tempted to end my membership to find a gym with free parking.

The gym seems much more crowded now that the Broadway location has officially been closed. The last 3 times I was in all but 2 or 3 treadmills were in use.

The treadmills are out dated, but the upside is that so far all the machines consistently work which can’t be said for the Broadway location that closed.

The gym also doesn’t seem to have stretching equipment (or at least I haven’t found any yet).

The gym is much cleaner than the Broadway location was and members seem to take greater care for the machines and clean up after themselves.

Gym is absolutely horrible! Nobody puts anything back where they find it, 75% of the members are glued to their phones and waste people times. Last 2 days no working water and bathrooms. Can’t buy water cause vending machine is empty out. If it’s anything like the elevator and the pool that will never be fixed anytime soon!
