TLDR: Don't come here. Staff is extremely rude and profiled me and my friends.

I visited this location last week, or I should say I attempted to. Three friends and I went with the intention of using their pool, one of us was a member and the rest of us purchased 3-day guest passes.

From the minute we walked in, the staff treated us with what can only be described as hostility. Two managers sitting behind the desk were giving us all the stank eye.

First and foremost, it says on their website that if you sign up for a pass, you're entitled to bring a guest. We were told that this was inaccurate and we all had to sign up for guest passes, which we complied with. Then, we were told that we either needed to undergo a 15 minute activation process or pay a $20 activation fee.

All of a sudden, their "internet is down" and they can no longer activate us and we are asked to pay the fee, which we refused because it's listed nowhere on their website. Then began an interrogation of whether or not we were going to become members of the gym. All of a sudden, they also have this policy of not allowing folks to use their pass for the pool if they don't plan on becoming members. How would you even enforce that?

We ask to speak to the manager. One had conveniently disappeared, and the other was extremely rude and accused us of having an attitude simply for asking questions about their policies.

The way we were treated was honestly shocking. I don't know whether it's because we looked like we don't have money or if it's because some of us are all women of color, but we were very clearly profiled and discriminated against. Do not give this place your business!!

Sales manager and floor manager both didn’t allow 2 of my friends to use the gym. They cited a random policy that wasn’t on their website stating that my friends couldn’t use the FREE 3 day pass on their website but instead pay $20 each for a day pass “because they didn’t have intent to use the gym” they also said that they couldn’t let just anyone come into their facility after they had changed their policy a month previously starting that “The MLK sports complex (in Auburn-Gresham) had closed and they needed appointment based policy since this other facility had closed” this statement felt incredibly classist. It feels like their policies are targeted and employees choose when to implement them on a case by case basis. Don’t recommend coming here at all.

Been here before with someone and brought em as a vip guest no wait no problem dude just let us work out. I went this morning with my other friend and tried to bring him in and the dude at front desk was asking us to pay 20 bucks or wait for a sales rep. So we did end up waiting like 30 mins just for him to tell us to just pay the 20. Not only did he waste our damn time but he also could’ve just let us in. My friend wasn’t even planning on signing a membership so the sales rep would’ve been useless no matter what. Bad experience which sucks cuz the dude I saw first time was chill and just let us workout.

This gym is by far one of the best I’ve seen in Chicago. The equipment is clean, well-maintained, and feels brand new. It’s never overly crowded, which makes training here a great experience. The staff are friendly and professional, and I want to give a special shout-out to Adrian—he really helped us get started and made the whole process smooth. Highly recommend this location.

It’s a nice gym. But I just wish I was given a choice to get a feel of the gym and choose to commit rather than trying to force PT training on me or “twist my arm” into signing a contract before I even tried the gym.

This process took almost an hour and after commuting over 30mins to come to the gym, I was so fatigued when it was time to actually work out. Allow people to use the free passes you offer.

Asides that, the gym is nice, well equipped, clean and quite organized.
Now I’m stuck with a $200 plus bill without even looking at other gyms in the area. I feel scammed.

Great place, good trainers. Insanely hard to discontinue membership. They will sign you up over phone but ask to come in person to discontinue. I recommend getting a printed copy of cancellation receipt, they kept charging me after in person cancellation. I had to go down there again, hopefully this time they settled it. Not sure if it's the staff or the company. I am staying away from LA fitness for good in future.

Not sure why the bad reviews... Most things have nothing to do with the gym or staff. In my opinion, this is a state of the art facility coming from a consistent gym goer for 15 years. They have a robust amount of free weights, including bumper plate/Olympic style lifting area, turf with battle ropes and sled lanes. I have not had to wait long for a bench even during pretty busy times. They validate parking. Clean and up to date.

LA fitness can't control people and aren't responsible for putting away your weights... This is surely one of the better LA fitness locations in Chicago and with significantly better hours.

That said, I haven't had to do anything with their admin which people seem to be having a problem with.

Shortly after 5pm on Tuesday August 5th 2025, I saw an African American male from this location nearly assault someone as they entered the plaza on Canal Street after the passerby declined a promotional free 3 Day Pass from the member of staff in question.

The incident was reported to a member of management and it’s to my understanding that the police were almost called to the plaza.

The individual referenced later returned to the facility and sat at the desk nearest the front entrance.

If this incident tells you what type of staff this place hires, it should tell you all you need to know about how poorly the facility is ran.

Came in with my fiancé, who’s a member, as a guest of his and was told that I couldn’t use his guest pass because I was a member before. Explained to the rep that I have a migraine so I wasn’t trying to do too much talking. He was adamant about renewing my membership and got upset that I didn’t want to take a tour. 8 us dancers went to this gym so that we could practice our routine for the WNBA half time show. Half of us had memberships and the other half didn’t. So the girls with memberships offered to let us use their guest pass. 4 of us sign up for the free 3 day trial. We immediately were “flagged” for some reason and weren’t allowed to use the free day trial? With no explanation as to why. They made us wait by the door as some young guy drilled us with questions. I ended up paying for a day pass and they still were Corning us. The whole thing was super bizarre. Why aren’t we allowed to use the free trials and why was it weird to them that the girls who were members were using their guest passes? We eventually got in but I had to pay for another day pass. Nobody was allowed to use the free trials. The young guy who questioned us, told the other employees at the desk about the whole scenario in front of other guests, trying to embarrass us. LA fitness is honestly a scam. I remember why I stopped going there 8 years ago. We shoulda been allowed to use our free 3 day trial. Why offer it if we can’t use it?

I’m a CEO of my own company and I would never tolerate my employees acting like that.

I should also mention that when one guy tried to sign us for our free day pass he asked why I had been to a gym in 8 years. That’s really none of his business and he said “how could you not be active for 8 years?” I told him I was a dancer. But the conversation was so uncomfortable.

There are other reviews discussing the issue with guest passes and unfortunately I experienced something similar this past weekend. I came from out of town and wanted to get a workout in. My friend gave me a guest pass. When I scanned It, I waited for approval to continue into the gym. They gave me a weird stare because the image didn’t match me. I was unaware there was a photo attached to a guest pass but proceeded to ask what is the policy on guests. I wouldn’t have minded filling out a form or paying for the day. The front desk employee said I was trying to finesse them and began laughing with another employee. I did not move until my guest pass was approved and I was willing to pay, had my credit card out as well. My friend offered to sign me up for a new guest pass but the employee claimed I couldn’t use it because it’s only for people who will get a membership. In the end, we left. It was a negative experience. It wouldn’t have felt right to pay $20 after that treatment.

These employees are severely underpaid and unhappy. They get off on this power trip because let’s be honest, they peaked in high school. There is nothing wrong with being kind. As an employee please remember you do not own the gym. Try and be gracious to future prospects. Their behavior said a lot about their character. This location was recently renovated so I’m not surprised they’re trying to get as much money out of people. LA Fitness is known to call consistently and add clauses to your contract. Be careful and don’t be alarmed! If you feel something is off, go with your gut feeling. It’s basically a pyramid scheme.

Since this is a bad review, most likely the owners will ignore this along with any others. LA Fitness reputation is notoriously bad. Their fitness trainers aren’t as qualified as they seem. You’re better off learning from Youtube.

Came to the gym today excited to work out, only to find out they removed the boxing bags. Those bags were the only reason I was going there. When I asked the manager if they were planning to hang the bags back up, he just said, “No, I’m sorry.” Well, now I have to cancel my membership—this gym just isn’t working out for me anymore.

I went today with a 7 day guest pass. It took 10 minutes to be seen. All of the workers had no sense of urgency. They were either too busy chatting with each other or walking around in circles. When I’m finally seen the guy that’s helping me asks for my ID. I give him my passport ID. I’ve been a chicago resident for 6 years & I’ve never had a reason to get a ID. He said I needed a chicago ID which is insane because what if I was just visiting from out of town. I asked if I can just show proof of address. He said no. I ended up paying $20 for a day pass. Crazy part is I had 7 day pass at the Hyde park location and didn’t have any trouble. I think he just wanted me to sign up for a membership bc he said the $20 could be applied to that. I told him I had no intention of doing that as I was moving and would be doing Pilates in that area.

Not to mention that they just reopened and most of the cardio machines are not working. Also, way too many people there for my liking. Workers seem like they are chilling and way too relaxed. Rather pay for something more upscale considering the bad service.

Great gym especially after the renovation. However there are more people who go there to “hang out” at the machines. There are two girls (always wearing turquoise and pink) I see every time that do legs and they take such long breaks to chat that nobody else can use those machines. They would hog the machines and refuse to let anyone else work in. So disrespectful and ignorant to the community especially when it’s a public gym. I pay a membership yearly membership on top of that a monthly fee. I’m not being paid. I’m very confused as why they make their own customers put the equipment back. Im sorry i didn’t know i agreed to work for LA fitness. You have staff sitting around, or flirting with every thing that moves, I suggest you use your employees to maintain your facility. It shouldn’t be the customer responsibility. I’m a customer treat me as such. Stop treating members as employees. If you rather have every member clean after themselves then reevaluate your yearly membership and monthly fees. It takes time to clean and sorry to say I pay a fee for you guys to maintain the gym clean for me. If you feel the member should then give me a clock in number and a pay check. Just like putting clown makeup on a corpse, The owners of the gym have managed to make something bad even worse than it was. Some of the machines are repetitive and at the same time scarce. The old machines that allowed you to try different ways of doing an exercise are gone. The place is always full. The parking is a disaster. Avoid if possible.

There was nothing in the contract stating no gym bags on the floor. Now they are saying you can’t bring gym bags because people are “complaining” but changing the rules… wouldn’t that mean a breach in the contract? I mean they had me sign saying I’ll rerack the weights and other stuff. I don’t trust my valuable belonging in the locker room nor behind the front desk. I’ve seen their employee cut a locker because someone thought and was acting unsure about that was his locker. He kept saying I think, maybe, not sure but than the employees cut the lock and the guy goes “oh I thought that was my locker”. And the guy tried to get them to cut another locker!

I specifically signed up to LA fitness because they didn’t have a bag rule now they are trying to change the rules after I signed the contract??? Can they even do that?

HONEST REVIEW (7/5/25) I'm not sure how long its been shut down but I came in today as they finished new construction. At first glance it's a big improvement. Lighting is better and they replaced all the equipment. The added a floor workout area with turf and overall it looks good. They added a full area of squat racks and legs which is a big plus. The only issue they will have is the tread mills... they used to have like 50 and now they have like 20.. that's a huge problem for this location.. but this looks like an actual SIGNATURE ROOM.. and they removed the basketball court which is a plus!!

It's supposedly an LA Fitness "Signature". Being the top tier of the LA Fitness brand, it is supposed to have the most amenities and probably best services. But the gym equipment never seem to be organized, the whole gym just smells more than other LA Fitness locations. Bathrooms are the most disgusting.... there is urine just running down the floors, some urinals don't work. You can tell management doesn't care. You can tell they haven't cleaned for some time. It's been like this for some time. Lots of the members come smelling like weed. I dont care if people smoke it but I don't like having to be subjected to it because of their choices.

I’ve been coming here since 2018. I stopped coming for a while post pandemic but have been consistent since January. The male workers/trainers are all nice, especially Wanya. He is the absolute best always walking through and available to answer any questions. However for it to be adults utilizing this facility, it’s disappointing to see how many members leave weights all over the gym. Even in the middle of the floor and between weight machines. Which is dangerous and could lead to a lawsuit if someone trips over a weight. They need to start enforcing that people restack their weights for those trifling people who don’t have the mental capacity to understand that they should clean up behind themselves. Also some of the women are absolutely NASTY and don’t clean up behind themselves when using the toilet and drip water all over the locker room after leaving the pool. Not sure why they don’t bring towels to prevent such a mess.
It’s like, who raised some of these women? Animals are cleaner and have more pride than some of the females who use this gym.

With purchasing Xsport and closing down close by stores, this location quality started going down fast, jacuzzi broke down 2 times within 6 months, boiler issues, so we have to shower in cold water (especially this past winter).

As a visitor from Dublin, Ireland, I was extremely frustrated to learn I couldn't use a guest pass from my US-based brother (a member) because I'm not a US resident. The idea of a "guest" pass being restricted to US residents is completely illogical. Guests are by definition temporary visitors! This policy is unwelcoming and makes no sense for those visiting from abroad. LA Fitness needs to rethink this ridiculous rule. Very disappointing experience.

"It's beyond disappointing at this point with LA Fitness. Having machines out of service for over a month is completely unacceptable for a paid gym membership. But to add to that, the water fountains are ALSO out of service! I hate to even admit that’s happened more than once. So, not only am I paying for equipment I can't use, but a basic necessity like refilling my water bottle isn't even available. It makes it incredibly difficult to have a decent workout. And let's not forget the sauna, which seems to be out of order more often than it's working. I really try to avoid leaving negative reviews, but honestly, who would willingly pay month after month for a gym where key amenities are consistently unavailable? This is beyond inconvenient; it's a complete lack of service."

Do not open a membership at this gym. They literally manipulate you into paying more money. I was told that if I paid $20 immediately I could get management promotion of paying $20 w a guest. I paid the money then I got there and it’s no guest connected to my account. So I had to pay another $30 , to get a new account. They informed me they would close and refund me the money from the last account. I never received the money but instead they took a $59.00 annual fee from both accounts totaling to almost $120.00. So I lost $180.00 from La fitness. I would believe this was an accident but this happened to me 2 years ago as well , which is why I stopped going to La fitness. I believe the sales reps do this to meet a specific criteria. Then if they made the mistake why would I have to pay to open another account , instead of them just fixing the account. Then when you complain a 5 number text you just to make it seem as if they care.

The feeling is good, the environment is clean and the staff is friendly. I almost didn't want to join when I first read the reviews. Until I went to experience, I found that it was not as bad as the evaluation said. The equipment is perfect, you can choose what you want to do without waiting in line. The squash court is largely unused, but still clean. Keep disinfecting wipes in a fixed position. The bathroom is clean and tidy. There are 8 places in the women's bathroom, so you don't have to worry about people not being able to take a bath. The sauna temperature is great. Parking in the parking lot is free for 2 hours, but remember to be early, or you will have to pay $4 for leaving one minute late. It's much easier to park in p2.
