This is my preferred location at the moment. I was going to the one on Elston bc its a little closer to me but I think this one is much better, IMO. I like that the gym is very well air conditioned, I like the variety of weights and machines (all but one in working condition, unlike the gym on Elston), it’s kept pretty clean and also how spacious it is. A couple of downisdes - they do not offer free towels like a lot of gyms do and the men’s locker room, (at this location) is very stuffy, humid and overall uncomfortable during hot days. I have also noticed that some of the equipment breaks down periodically and it takes several months for repair. This has been very frustrating and makes me question whether I should renew my membership.

A nice neighborhood fitness place with good machine and equipment variety. Not fancy but worth it if its convenient to you. Also the people are nice. There was confusion about how to access the gym for a free trial and they were kind and let me work out even though i didn't meet the specific restrictions. I can see why this place is popular.

Concur with the other 1-Star reviews. Bad attitude here amongst staff and dire lack of customer service. Don’t know how they can expect people to sign up for their memberships when they have such a nonchalant attitude towards people. bordering on being jerks. I’ll choose to spend my money elsewhere where they know how to treat people. Avoid this place.

I would have given it 3 stars prior to a couple months ago. Laura the manager could not be more on top of things - or kinder or helpful !

A few months ago, one practically needed to hold their breath when walking into the locker room. It was pretty disgusting.

She has ensured cleanliness and I instantly noticed the difference.

And I recall one day we where as soon as I entered the gym she apologized for the air conditioning issues and said they were working on it.

I barely noticed that it was warmer than usual.

She's immensely committed to the customer experience and that feels great.

She's been immensely helpful to me personally on a number of occasions.

Also - one of the trainers - Goop - is extraordinaripy talented. While younger than some trainers I've seen in the past he's the most knowledgeable. As I'm aging, he was able to make modifications and focus on mobility rather than strength or size. I've avoided injury and he consulted with my physical therapist. He's also one of the most optimistic and ethical people I've ever met. His guidance and patience has kept me active which is essential for my well-being (and arthritis)

These are some profoundly good people !

as a member for over four years, there are highs and lows. The lows are: it gets very hot because the air condition doesn’t work. They have some staff that are extremely creepy. There’s only one glute machine, so be prepared to wait.

The highs: generally the staff is great! The culture seems pretty good, minus the creepy ones, but you can’t always avoid those regardless of the gym. They have a fair amount of machines that are usually working. they have separate floors and separate rooms.

Overall, I recommend but I’m not there in the summer because there’s no air condition. Even yesterday, in April 2025, it was very warm in there, breaking a sweat even when it was 45° outside.

Aug 2025 update- Laura, the new manager, has really taken charge of this location and it shows. She’s been getting the gym into great shape, and the air conditioning has been running pretty smoothly throughout the summer (definitely have been days that it’s not working in some rooms.) But It’s clear she genuinely cares about both the members and their experience here, which has had a noticeably positive impact on the atmosphere.

That said, the gym really needs to invest in another hip thrust machine. There’s only one available, and it constantly creates a bottleneck—members are left waiting around, adjusting their workouts, or checking back repeatedly to see if it’s free. While there’s plenty of upper body equipment (clearly catering to the men), this machine is a cornerstone for strength training, especially for women. It’s surprising that such an essential piece of equipment is so limited. If you’re focused on glute building, just know if you come at a popular time… it might not be convenient for you.

Just like many people, my experience was the same. Front desk people were pretentious and rude. Looked like they hate their job. I’m new to the neighborhood and was going to sign up, and they seemed annoyed I was there.

Bottom line: there are PLENTY of other fitness places in the area. Find somewhere else.

I walked in after signing up for a free trial, and nowhere within the trial does it always an in-state ID is required. I brought my ID, but I just moved to Chicago and was looking for a new gym to call home. The girl at the front desk was unbelievable flippant and seemed annoyed at my arrival. I was never rude, or dismissive in any way. The man next to her immediately swatted at the air and said "Yeah but you need an in-state ID." I understood and prepared to leave, but the girl seemed so frustrated for reasons unknown, and kept making awful faces. I asked to be removed from communications since I obviously won't be working out here. Then I called to verify and she said "Oh yeah. I forgot" and hung up on me. I've never been so appalled at someone's behavior and I'll never step foot in an LA Fitness again. I will also make it my mission to ensure everyone knows how abhorrant their behavior is. Worst gym experience I've ever had. If LAF wants customers, they should get their hires far more thoroughly. I can't say enough bad about her and his attitude.

If I could give this gym 0 stars I would but it’s NOT an option. I’ve been posting about broken machines since LA FITNESS took over, as of today I spoke to the staff in regards to getting them repaired and I was informed it’s out of their hands!!! Corporate is REFUSING to repair broken machines ex. the leg extension machines in the north wing of the gym. Both machines are out of service one broke in November of last year and the other in April. One has the sign the other does not. So not only do they NOT care about repairing or replacing broken machines they definitely don’t care about the member’s safety. Members are charged a monthly fee of $50 for a gym that does NOT supply adequate equipment. I stead they are wasting funds on paint and switching out light bulbs that does not to be replaced. REPAIR or REPLACE broken equipment!!! It’s a LIABILITY and a SAFETY ISSUE!!!!!

Since the sale to LA Fitness, all I've noticed is 1) no paper towels anywhere, even in the bathrooms 2) broken plumbing, 3) reduced hours and services, 4) Wifi no longer works

EDIT: things have stabilized post-acquisition. Raising to 3 stars. I miss the paper towels though.

This club had a rough transition from being an XSport club to an LA Fitness club. For a period of months, there was just a lack of cleanliness and a lot of out-of-service equipment. My intent was to leave LA Fitness when my annual membership ran out.

I am glad that I stayed. The current LA fitness team has made great progress in making this a good health club.

The club itself has a very mixed membership with some serious bodybuilders, some high school kids and mostly a good mix of somewhat serious health-conscious people.

The layout of the club boasts four distinct areas. This is a big advantage if you are unable to get on a specific piece of equipment or if you just don’t like the mix of people working in an area, you can easily move into one of the three other areas and find similar equipment on which to work out.

It is not a fancy club but you can definitely get in a good workout here. The cardio equipment definitely needs an upgrade, but it is still usable. The club has recently replaced all the padding on existing workout equipment, so it is in pretty decent shape. There are abundant free weights available at several locations in the club. No towel service or hot meals. But this is a good club for the lower price you pay at this club versus the fancier clubs.

A recent upgrade that is evident is the upgrade in the cleanliness of the club. It is a marked improvement even from a few weeks ago. And the high level of cleanliness is being pretty consistently maintained.

So, if you are looking for a good neighborhood club that is clean, has an extensive selection of workout equipment over a pretty large club space, has somewhat serious athletes working out there, and is reasonably priced, this LA fitness club is a good bet.

Went there yesterday for a simple tour about 11:30 am. The front desk staff acted like he didn’t even want to acknowledge me standing there until I requested a tour. He began, as he annoyingly continued throughout the entire tour, asking me the same damn questions over and over again, even after I repeatedly asked him why he was doing that! He acted like a weird bot (I even looked at him two or three times to see if he actually was one 🤷🏿). At the end of the “tour”, I asked him who was the manager. He pointed out a man sitting at a desk on the phone and then actually asked me why I wanted to talk with him. I went over and sat in a chair in front of the manager, indicating I was waiting to talk to him. This “manager”/individual totally ignored me, just kept enjoying his phone call, and didn’t even acknowledge or give me eye contact. I got up and got the hell out of there, feeling very not welcomed there. Maybe it was the color of my fro 👴🏿? That was my first time in that place.

Went here for the first time cause I was in the area. Overall thought machines were pretty good and didn’t have to wait on anything. Was unaware of where everything was so I tried asking one of the trainers where’s the nearest bathroom.trainer tried to ignore and mean mug me until the second or third time l called for him ,which he responded by asking me “what’s your problem”. Instead of just answering the simple question, employee was rude and hostile and said “you already know where the bathroom is”. Which was strange and weird, and he walked away shortly after. Why would I ask if I already know? Short bald African man who was one of the trainers. Went to make a complaint to the manger but he seemed uninterested and angry that I was complaining and probably did nothing after I left. I would have loved to come back but not interested in rude and unprofessional employees.

I'm afraid I have to echo what others have said. The club is kept entirely too warm. It isn't that the air condition doesn't work, it is that it is set that high (you can see the set point as soon as you walk in). Because the gym is kept FAR too high above the optimal workout temperature, your body will be stressed to keep cool and your workout will suffer. Not only that, but by keeping the ceiling fans running in an enclosed, poorly ventilated area, in such a way that there is no circulation, even more heat is being added making the place hotter.

Equipment is in a constant state of disrepair. I would venture to say that the management has never completed an annual top to bottom inspection of the equipment.

Unfortunately the gym still carries the grungy, dirty, drab decore as the X-sport that it was originally. Tiles are cracked and missing in places, and there are tripping hazards everywhere. I have yet to understand the organization of the equipment in the three rooms; other L.A. Fitnesses arrange the equipment by muscle group.

The locker room is a veritable steam room. Like other X-Sports, everything is cramped, dirty, and in marginal repair. Locker lock-rings are twisted and broken, doors are missing knobs, and they frequently have trash left inside. Expect to find protein powder all over the floor. The sinks are constantly flooded with soap and water, so don't get too close or you'll get a wit line on your shorts. The showers have a funk, and like everything else, there is often something broken: towel racks, door jambs, shower knobs, soap dispensers.

The one good thing I can say is that the location is fantastic.

Why hasn’t the air conditioning been fixed yet? I moved here in 2019 and every year, it’s a continuous problem. I can look past all the other major flaws but the A/C should be management’s main priority. I’m not sure why they haven’t addressed the issue. This picture is from a relatively nice day (64F current temp with high of 72F). Imagine how hot it is when it’s above 85F outside.

Desperately needs investment. It's honestly a travesty that LA Fitness Corporate decided to keep this former XSport open while closing down the much more pleasant location above Mariano's on Broadway.

Pros:
- A good amount of equipment. Only thing keeping this from 1 star. Even this isn't AMAZING though. It has more squat racks than I've seen in many other gyms, but I only found one leg extension machine upstairs. Couldn't find the calf extension machine.

Cons:
- Ridiculously hot. I feel that people that come here regularly must have forgotten what gyms are supposed to feel like.
- Sweaty / Dirty. There are so few wipes that I think people have given up on using them. The turf is so stomped down that you can't feel individual blades of "grass" and it's almost sticky-feeling. The air also feels musty and gross. The locker rooms actively smell moist and sweaty because of the carpet.
- Confusing layout. I think I spent 15 minutes of my last workout here just looking for equipment, since a lot of it is in hard-to-see alcoves or upstairs, which has an entrance that is barely visible. It's in a charming old building, so this can be forgiven as long as the signage is improved.
- Crowded in multiple ways. There is a lot of equipment, but it is crammed onto little floorspace. There is also a huge customer base, compounding the crowded feeling.

Not hating, but offering honest feedback. LA Fitness, please prove you are not like every other soulless corporate consolidator and actually invest in the property you purchased. Otherwise, sell XSport back to someone who cares please.

The air conditioning never works properly. Many machines are out of order and are never repaired or replaced. To top it off, the cleanliness of the bathrooms is terrible, as the showers always smell like urine. I think paying $50 a month is way too much for such poor service. They should really pay attention to these issues.

Hard to say whether this is just the transition from Xsport to LA or not, but the gym is constantly running out of paper towels, cleaning wipes, and there have consistently been multiple machines broken (some for months) since LA took over. Obviously not expecting perfection from a gym at this tier, but it's been a rough 6 months or so.

Equipment is regularly broken or doesn't function proper (takes a long time to fix). They cannot seem to figure out how to file a purchase order to order more paper towels and disinfectant spray bottles for the gym floor (trust me, some people leave their benches covered in sweat). DirecTV also no longer carries ESPN or ABC, so the four channels that do work there, are pretty grim. And to top it off, base membership went from $9.99 to $19.99 ($24.99 I believe for new members now) so it makes you wonder where the hell they've allocated their revenue stream.

Tina the operating manager, her customer service is terrible. She is so rude and not concerned w being nice even tho she is the operating manager. My payment was late, it tried to charge me on the 7th, i have records that it charged me previously as late as on the 14. She refused to let me work out, i understand i need to post the payment. But i paid an annual fee, i should have a grace period like the previous months. I had to call customer service for them to change me due date. But time had no resulution for an alternative. I work in customer services. I honestly don’t even want to make the payment or work out there ever again. She told me i can’t work out but customer service moved my date and now i can work out. The general manager who should lead the team is setting the bar really low. I’m telling all my friends and family to go to the lake view location. Where they at least are kind. Tina has the worst attitude. Not to mention she is not even presenting her self professional. She has grey roots w color dyed hair that needs to be touched up. How is that allowed on top of her sassy attitude, it’s sickening to be treated like nothing at a place i visit everyday. Thank you Tina for ruining my day, for ruining my work out and my over all experience w x sports. You totally impact me the worst way. I will be contacting xsports to see why is she allowed.
If you don’t like your job don’t take it out on the ppl. I just wanted to use my grace period as i previously did which is clearly not a problem since customer service helped me do that after a 45 minute call. Please send Tina and her attitude back to training until she can have a mind set with a smile w attitude of gratitude for a job and life. I never wana see her again. I called to check did the system update the new date. She answered and i hung up. She called back twice. I literally had anxiety about her telling family member when I’m at the gym like she would ask them to come attack me. Her body language and facial expressions are not friendly to be at the front desk. Xsports has relationships w other business they cross promote w, they have the Chicago police there recruiting, why must we be greeted w nasty attitude Tina??? This is ridiculous. She felt so triumphant denying me entry, when she could have said Brandon i can help you work out by changing your due date, she was happy seeing me leave unsatisfied. So demonic of her honestly.

Shared a complaint about a recent competition for muscle building and weight loss and was ignored. The weight loss competitor winners each lost 70 pounds in the span of 3 months. Even your own staff thinks that your clientelle may be on peptides or other drugs used to enhance weight loss. Perhaps you should reconsider advertising this to your members because this is very unsafe and unhealthy. Or do you solely care about profits? I have heard from your own staff that upper management is quite narcissistic and delusional. Oh, and your machines tend to be broken. Replacing them with a safety cushion and only fixing them once a year (thanks staff member) aids in knowing how awful management seems to be.

The majority of the Chicago Locations don't have their central air unit working. I've been frequenting the Xsport at 3240 N Ashland Ave for over 10 years. For the past 4 years the central air unit isn't working and the conditions are miserable when the temperatures in Chicago are over 65 degrees. The gym temperature on summer days is over 85 degrees inside and impossible to work out in. I have mentioned it to the managers on duty and they always comment that it's in the process of being fixed. I don't believe that it takes over 4 years to fix. Last year a member actually passed out and fell off a chair due to the heating conditions.

I'm shocked that more members haven't passed out to heat exhaustion. Will this huge issue be resolved anytime soon? I tried calling corporate, but just get a busy signal.

This xsport compared to all the other xsports in the Chicagoland area appears to be the nicest and maintained one. Also the cleanest. Still that does not mean this gym is in anyway maintained or cleaned, it just is better at doing this than its other locations. Xsport is the type of gym you have to gamble with whether a machine will be working or not. Majority of machines look like they are overused and ready to be replaced (common xsport problem). It's sad when machines don't have the proper (out of order) sign on them to let people know so they don't try to workout on them or hurt their body working on a poorly maintained or broken machine. Specifically talking about the bikes and stairmasters on the main floor. Also workers seem to say machines have been "fixed" when they literally shut down on you a week after they've been fixed. embarrassing on their part they're just tryna bandage a bigger problem (spending money on getting new machines and equipment).

The weights sections however are amazing (compared to other xsports) so I can't complain about them. Honestly is the biggest reason I come to this gym because there are plenty weights (3 sections - 2 on main and 1 upstairs).

The studio also is a big plus about this gym (it is taken care of and is very big).

I used the spa privileges once and was pretty disappointed when half the amenities they offer were dirty, broken, or something was off about them. Pretty much never wasted my time again on them even though it's included in my membership. (The spa is downstairs).

Locker room is standard. It smells but is MUCH cleaner than other xsports and so r the bathrooms. Other xsports locker and bathrooms are a dump, so good job Lakeview team for doing your work.

I've been going to this gym for almost a year now and it's the XSport location I use the most. Women's locker room and sauna is well kept and usually clean. They've also been doing a better job lately of keeping the paper towels and cleaning spray stocked throughout the gym so patrons can wipe the equipment down before/after using which I appreciate. My favorite thing about this gym are the Friday morning yoga classes with Marlen. I'm pretty picky with group fitness classes and Marlen's classes are excellent in my opinion; a great blend of balance/flexibility/strength, easy to follow instructions, considerate of all skill levels, and she brings a new sequence every week which keeps things interesting and fun!

They keep charging you even if you cancel your membership. I cancelled my membership with an employee in person back in December to make sure I was not going to get charged further, and I suddenly got charged in February. Customers shouldn’t be spending their time just trying to finish a membership several times while being charged unfairly.

Pretty solid gym. Nothing fancy but has everything you need at a reasonable price. Only problem is cleanliness and it seems most patrons are ignorant to gym etiquette. You will be constantly reracking others weights etc. If your looking for a cheap gym with all the standard amenities than this will work for you.

I joined this gym only for group classes. However, it has been repeatedly observed that when classes are cancelled, it is not communicated in advance. I commute 20mins and then get to know classes are cancelled which is very annoying and a waste of time. I have shared this feedback with the manager but nothing has been done for either a decent notice prior communication or any steps for replacement instructors so that schedule of others is not impacted.

Bewn a member at XSport for years. This is a neighborhood gym. It's a chain, but this location is where the locals go to workout. You will typically see the same people during the same hours everyday. It's great. I like the open floor plan, but I also like how the free weights are in a different area.

A gym is a gym, but this has a great vibe. I don't live in the neighbood anymore, but I always make my way to work out at this gym. Was there before the pandemic and I also eorked out there after the restrictions were lifted. The place is the same. I love it.

Will start with the pros: good location, enough room to have a lot of people simultaneously working out and there’s always a machine available to be used, the gym is huge and has multiple areas distributed. I always found it clean, prices are decent comparing with the ones around.
Cons: indoor smell and temperature is terrible. During the summer I’ve seen thermostats over 85 degrees is terrible. Staff is weird, most of them unkind I would say, they keep rotating and bringing/firing new people, so there’s always employees working, you can easily tell and wonder why? Take your own guess. Machines and equipment are old, lot of them don’t work at all, and yes, you can report that but they never fix them. Hopefully this review helps the managers to improve it.

I've been going to this gym for over 10 years and will now be canceling. Ever since the pandemic, this gym has gone way down hill. There is always something unusable in the woman's locker room. A shower, faucet and/or paper towel dispenser. Equipment isn't well kept. I've been on several treadmills where the belt slips. But the most egregious negative is they keep the thermostat in the main room set to 79 degrees(I looked). Cardio in that heat is brutal.

This is not a good gym: it’s run by hucksters, it’s 85 degrees inside the main room at all times, it’s too crowded, and the men’s locker room is a war crime. However, it’s cheap and it’s close to my apartment, so a loyal XSport customer I am.

Sign up on the website, you can skip the high pressure sales pitch and then when you want to cancel they have to give you a way to do it online if you signed up online.

What I thought would be my journey to physical fitness. It ended up being more damaging to my mental health and finances. Cancelled my membership after 3 weeks. Paid for 2 full months and lost access immediately after cancelling. Most gyms let you continue till the end. Also wasted money on 16 personal training sessions that I can no longer do.

They will upsell from the moment you walk in to do a tour of the gym. So expect there to be there for about an hour when touring.

They will pressure you into doing the personal training courses. Just be sure you really want to do it, and sign up for the ones you know you’ll take, not the plan they try to
give you because they’ll try to sell you most.

Also keep track on what they’re charging you. There’s no monthly receipt or bill. After I cancelled, I was told I wouldn’t be charged. I still keep seeing random charges on my account via their site. So yeah…

I am taking away three stars for the following reason...

I went to this location to do my workout, and this is my usual location, the employee there (male, I didn't catch his name, and it was the first time I've seen him work at this location) wanted me to change my membership, something that I was very hesitant to do although the change would allow me to go to the XSport I live the closest to. I was under the impression that the change in my membership would see me pay monthly like the plan I had, but that didn't happen at all as the full price was charged instead (my debit card, thankfully, got declined). In the process of all of this, my current membership was canceled. This ruined my spirits and I just went home because of this incident.

I decided to sign up again after I abruptly left, because I like this location, but I now fear that I may be paying for two memberships instead of just one because the employee told me that he would get in touch with the manager to sort this out which was before I signed up again, although I don't know if that will actually happen. I am not confident that the issue will get resolved in a timely manner.

If there is a piece of advice that I can give to those who get into this situation, it's that the gym employees need to exercise extreme caution regarding asking the clientele if they want to change their plan, because this could cost the client more money than anticipated, which I don't know if that's even legal to do, because I felt like I was being asked to pay even more money.

The clientele also need to be vigilant about this sort of thing, and keep any emails you have on the matter.

This is a gym all right. Lots of buffsters being all buff. I decided , given the outlook for February, that running outside is a pipe dream here in the windy apple. It can’t be good for my skin, I hereby deduce. So, um, I drive past this gargantuan complex with some regularity and it’s always buzzing with health concerned gym people. You know the type. Attempting to be a part of this phenomenon, I joined up and had the big tour. I utilized my membership into this club yesterday, and it was pretty upbeat. There were all sorts of health concerned dudes. Some , all shorts and a line tees, some kind of overdressed in say, unibomber core, or I don’t know , nerd core. I took a dance party ! Class which subsequently kicked my posterior. Was a good way to spend a snowy Saturday. I like it.

I have had multiple issues with this gym. They “accidentally” charged my card $350 and said they couldn’t refund me. I would have to keep it as credit. I also pay extra to bring a buddy in and they still charge me $10 on top of that to bring a friend. XSport finds every way to take your money. If you are looking for a new gym, avoid this one at all cost. Not only does it smell like trash and half the equipment is broken and they are in your ear constantly to buy over priced supplements, and they’re workers constantly hit on clients which is awkward but they are devious thieves or do not know how to properly close out accounts. Here’s why:

I signed up for the buy one year and get one year free and paid cash upfront. When my 2 years expired, I had told the sales rep that I didn’t want to renew for the above stated reasons and I was told that no further instruction was needed to cancel. But they kept my card on file and continued to charge me $42 A MONTH FOR MONTHS when I didn’t step foot back in there after I was told my membership was “cancelled”. I called the Lakeview location and asked for the GM, who said my account was frozen and they didn’t know why I was still being charged and that I had to call corporate. I’ve been trying to call for a week and it happens that all they’re reps are always helping so many customers and they can’t give a call back when I leave a message. And I bet the only response I’ll get is an automated revives response saying to “send my concerns to so and sos email.” This company is full of crooks, support local gyms.

If you want to belong to a gym where it's insanely packed in the morning and evening and you're asked "Hey bro, how many sets you have left?" every time you go, then this is the gym for you!

If you want to run on treadmills or use the cardio machines then by all means, you should join here, they have so many. But if you want to use free weights anytime between 6a-9a, or 3-6p, then you're going to be fighting tooth and nail for 1) the weights you want, 2) an area to use them, 3) waiting as people do one set then sit on the their phone.

I know I listed prime times above but the problem is this gym is incredibly packed at almost all times during the day. If you don't believe me, join for a trial session and check it out for yourself. I joined a small local gym for the same price, and couldn't be happier.

This xsport used to be one of the better ones due to how many squat racks they had. For whatever reason, they removed the 2 upstairs. I’m assuming to discourage people from slamming weights up there which is understandable, but 1) there’s still people up there with barbells slamming stuff and 2) why not just move the 2 racks that were up there downstairs in place on the smith machine. It’s pretty obvious the racks are what people take up most so it made no sense to reduce the decent number they had. Also, there’s only like 3 10lb plates for the entire gym to share. Bummer

Bathroom fixtures don’t work, soap and hand sanitizer descenders are empty, equipment is broken and weights are no where to be found. When you ask anyone working there to address these frequent issues they all tell me “it’s not my job”. I wasn’t aware sitting on your butt so the chair doesn’t float away was an occupation, but kudos to these lazy folks for cornering that market. When my membership expires I will not be renewing.
