Membership at the Y does more than just a gym membership, you are supporting a non profit that has reaches throughout the city. As a member you can see the sense of community that has been fostered by the outreach.

Got a membership expecting a normal YMCA experience (i.e., not an equinox experience), but even then I have to say it’s disappointing. Cockroaches observed in the men’s locker room - really really gross! Broken fitness machines persist - Peloton bikes have been out of service for multiple months, and other aerobic equipment is broken in the “aerobics studio.” Seems like a lack of willingness to invest in the member experience. Might be good for childcare, I don’t know, but if you’re looking for a gym I would recommend you spend $50/month individual membership fee elsewhere.

The positive aspect is that most gym-goers use machines, so if you're comfortable with free weights, you won't have to wait in line. However, if you're in decent shape, be prepared to face harassment from both lazy gym staff and other gym-goers who may think you have an unfair advantage instead of recognizing your hard work. Additionally, the gym is often taken over by teenagers around 3 PM, who sit on machines and run through the halls. For $65, you can definitely find better options. The equipment is outdated, not very clean, and broken machines can take up to six months to fix.

I am so incredibly frustrated with this building and the people who control it, they cannot keep it cool enough to workout inside. It's constantly too hot in humid.
I wish they could get their act together because I used to like this place but now I hate it. I do not recommend this facility at all to anybody

There’s honestly so much to say.

1. The aquatics manager—whatever her exact title is—seems completely pointless. I genuinely don’t know what she does during her hours there because SHE NEVER ANSWERS EMAILS. And it’s not just me. Apparently, this is her thing—multiple people have told me the same. At this point, it feels like everyone has just accepted that emailing her is a waste of time.

2. Mold. Constantly. In the corners of the shower stalls in the restrooms. I’m also seriously questioning how often the shower curtains are changed—if at all.

3. Did you see the pictures I posted? Yeah, that’s real. I looked up while washing my hair and saw… A BABY ROACH. I nearly slipped and hit my head because I was so startled. And let’s be honest: if there’s a baby, the parents are close. Maybe call pest control? Maybe prioritize cleanliness? Is this not an actual health hazard? Also, I’d heard rumors about the roach issue from others—but now I’ve witnessed it firsthand.

I was willing to overlook everything else but the ROACH was my final straw and I had to say something. PLEASE GET EXTERMINATORS!

Get it together, Lakeview YMCA. Seriously.

It’s a bit of a maze to make your way around the 1st time. But it’s clean and modern (in terms of the equipment) for the most part. Staff was friendly enough. But space can be characterized as limited.

My current experience here is limited to one cold, Sunday, in November. If I had to guess, I’d bet this place is going to be a zoo come January.

This location of the Y is incredibly convienent, affordable, and friendly. Their facilities although old, are very sufficient and offer all sorts of choices in excercise. I love to use their weight machines, cardio room (with 20+ treadmills), and their four lane indoor pool. This location is never too busy and always has the equipment I may want or need available to me. The other gym goers are kind & curteous. They also have excellent classes. I particularly love Lizzie’s spin class on Wednesday nights. She’s a great teacher!

Been going to various YMCAs since I was a kid. Sometimes I try out the gyms but I always come back to the YMCA.

Lakeview YMCA is no different. It's affordable, convenient, has a set of customers that are generally my speed, and it provides a good service to the community.

The facilities are great. Lots of weight lifting and cardiovascular options, as well as basketball and racquetball courts. It has a great boxing gym and a nice pool.

The city and neighborhood are lucky to have a facility with this many amenities and wide-ranging offerings. Not the most modern or recently renovated, but none of it gets in the way of achieving success. Recent changes at various levels of leadership showing immediate improvement, especially in the youth aquatics program that was recently frustrating and now shows signs of flourishing.

Great neighborhood Y. Yes it’s an older building, but that gives it charm. Their facilities are amazing. I go there to play basketball, and every time there are always people to play pick up games with.
Everyone has seemed to honor the order of “got next”, and I’ve never had to wait too long to get into a game.
The cost of membership is on par with your L.A. Fitnesses, Xsports, and Lifetimes. However, there are so many more programs available at your disposal through the Y, and it’s a real community feel.

I really like this gym, but unfortunately I’ve chosen to cancel my membership. They have continued to raise the membership cost year after year, and have nothing to show for it. This Y is an integral part of our lives! They have friendly and accommodating staff. We like the Kid Zone so us parents can have our devoted fitness time. Our daughter plays with her friends at the kid zone and it provides some social interaction. The kid zone is huge and they even have some Montessori toys!

There is a lot to do at this fitness center. Our family enjoys swimming and sweating out. The sauna is so important during the winter months! The equipment are all functional and the hours are always accommodating.

Better than X-Sport! Strong statement but yes, this gym is better than x-sport in which I’m only comparing the two because they are close enough to eachother, if you wanted to make the switch. I love this gym because it’s never busy when I go. Plenty of equipment to share with others, and plenty of space. Secondly, the staff is super friendly. They have a pool too, which is an added plus. They put safety first, so they only close the pool when a lifeguard is unavailable.

Lake View is, in my opinion, the best YMCA in the Chicago system. I previously went to Irving Park, and while I liked that one, this YMCA is bigger and a little cleaner/newer with a bigger weightlifting room in particular and a dedicated aerobic/dance studio with almost every piece of equipment you could think of. This Y is very easily accessible by bus 9 (Roscoe stop) and is in a nice area too with coffee shops, etc close by. It’s also very close to the brown line.

Summer camps should be a place where your kids should be protected. Not here. Here, kids can make racists comments to other campers without any consequences. The staff is not educated enough to deal with racism and would rather dismiss it and hide behind they're three strikes and you're out policy. Your kid can be traumatized and the staff won't even address it with you. Their entire leadership needs to be overhauled. There are much better places that promote diversity and inclusion. Send your children elsewhere.

From swimming lessons to 3 on 3 basketball, summer camps (STEM, art, sports, regular…we have done them all!) to this past year’s pandemic pod learning, we are so grateful for all the YMCA does for our kids and our family. Our girls love “Parent Night Out” once a month and are disappointed when we are out of town and have to miss it. The staff members are delightful and extremely helpful. The camp team is amazing. Don’t recommend this place at all. They are INFESTED with bed bugs , they don’t care about employees, the executive director is rude and unprofessional and lacks in informing members and staff about Covid. Only cares about the money that they don’t have. The main site lead Mallory is beyond rude and aggressive with children and uses triggers to her advantage. My family cannot give enough praises to this YMCA!

We moved into the neighborhood in part because of its proximity to this place!

My daughter, 5 years old, and I have felt safe returning back to the pool during covid with reserved swim lanes.

My daughter has also been able to get involved with weekly STEM activities via their "Tinkering Lab".

Also, when my wife and my schedules changed, we were able to send my daughter to remote learning at the Y three days a week. Honestly, she prefers school at the Y more than being in her school building.

There's more I can list: the affordability, the camps, the pickup basketball, the kids sports leagues we look forward to joining, the comfortable workout environment, etc...

But really the staff has been the most amazing part! They have gone out of their way to make my daughter feel comfortable in these less than normal times. I am forever grateful!

This facility is family-friendly and centrally located. We've used our family membership for swimming lessons, youth basketball, summer camp and personal fitness. The value of the membership is quite good. There always seems to be space and availability to experiment in their various offerings. All the staff seem to love working there and serving their members. You can find problems anywhere, but at the end of the day, the people working there are servant-minded and make the experience an excellent one. The people who work the front desk are extremely polite, however they are not given the proper information. Almost every gym now has started opening things back up. I have no asked and emailed several times asking when the sauna and basketball court will open up and all they can say is that they don’t know. There are rooms for classes and stretching that are only available to private trainers which makes no sense considering paying members can’t use them at all. This gym does not value it’s paying members clearly. Again, I want to specify the front desk crew is extremely nice, but their higher ups are doing a terrible job. Looking around for new gyms. We have been told that they don’t have the proper cleaning crew yet... well tough... hire more people, our memberships shouldn’t be tarnished because the owners are too lazy or cheap to hire more people.

I've been coming here for the gym off an on for nearly a decade. I will say that in previous years there have been a much more extensive class offering with lots of variety in options and times of day. That aside, I absolutely love, love, love the zumba classes here. All of the instructors are so genuine, fun and inspiring.

I tend to go on Friday mornings for Stacie's class - lots of regulars and newbies alike so it's not intimidating at all. Everyone is very welcoming and it's so great to just dance. You seriously don't even feel like you're working out. I highly recommend this class!

The weight room and cardio rooms have all the machines I could ever want, there are a plethora of tvs, it's clean and never overly crowded. I send my kids to the Y Zone and they love it. Overall, for the price, it is incredibly reasonable.

This YMCA location has a confusing layout. Pool is very small.

The Chicago Metro YMCA is dismantling the maintenance department at the Lakeview YMCA, putting in jeporady the jobs of staff members who have been loyal to LV for years. It is a continuation of how poorly they treat their employees where line staff are undervalued and exmpt directors and Chicago Metro executives continue to line their pockets at the expense of those at the bottom of the pay scale.

Been a member for a year. Place was ok but my lock was cut off and contents of locker was stolen. It can happen anywhere but the staff at the Y did nothing to even look for the guy. After 3 days the report was sitting on the person's desk and hadn't been looked at. The staff at the Y does nothing to prevent theft if it happens. It can happen anywhere but if it happens here it's a given that they won't even bother to see what happened.

This YMCA lakeview location is a great place do go excercise with your family, the gym is great, the schedule is full of fun activities for all different age groups, where the entire family can have fun together, and spend some qualit time. Also its a very clean place.

If you like doing sports you will feel totally perfect there. They have a basketball court, a pool and a great many training items. Before you use them you can read what regions of your body will be trained. For volunteers, which applies to me, they offer a 10$ membership, which is great!

Another great YMCA facility housed in a unique, older building in the city. It may take a few times to get comfortable finding your way to different areas, but that is part of the fun. Sara's NIA class is a shining example of how fun and creative the workout can be, providing a unique way to exercise body, mind and spirit (and her special Halloween-edition class succeeded in reminding me how I'd felt about the holiday as a kid)!

It may be small because it is in the city. However, whatever it lacks in size it makes up in spirit. The staff is always friendly and greets you. There are always events and classes going on. It's like a small community within a building. Besides that, there is always a place available to workout.

I've been a member of this YMCA branch for 18 years now and I have always been satisfied with the environment and programs offered. We started off by enrolling my sons in martial arts class, and we have been active members ever since. The staff is great, and the new additions to the facility have made it even better. We will be life time members and appreciate the community here.
