Why is the fan blasting on the second floor when it's snowing outside? Any sweat with the strong draft immediately makes people cold. Too hot in the cardio room and way too cold in the weights area. This needs fixed.

Great local gym, especially for the price. Little crowded at peak hours, but easy to join and super easy to cancel as well. No tricks or hoops you have to jump through. Solid facilities and they keep it clean.

This might be the warmest gym I’ve ever worked out in. The cardio room consistently feels like 80+ degrees year round. As I’m writing this, it’s 85 degrees outside and it still feels cooler than the air in the gym.

During winter, the heat is turned up so high that it’s difficult to comfortably walk on the treadmill for longer than 20 min without being soaked and overheated. During summer, the AC barely breaks a breeze and the only ventilation comes from a couple of ceiling fans.

It’s gotten to the point where I now bring a small personal fan with me to the gym because I can’t count on them to provide adequate air conditioning, especially during heatwaves.

They never open any windows in the gym to get fresh air in, even during the cooler months of the year. As I noted above, it is not uncommon for it to be cooler outside in the summer than it is in the gym. Don’t even bother trying their other Lakeview location (LVAC) - their AC doesn’t even work lol.

I’ve never belonged to a gym where we don’t receive any email communications from management about updates at the gym. They only send an email once every few months to advertise their personal training sessions. Around holidays, they post fliers on the front door with the gyms holiday hours so you have to go in person to even check when they’ll be open. The only “upgrade” I’ve noticed here in the past year is them painting an orange wall in one of the studios for no reason.

Crossing my fingers that a better gym opens someday soon so we can all collectively cancel our memberships and go somewhere with better hours, better AC, and better management who listens to their customers.

I like this gym but they’re still operating on COVID hours. Unless they extend their hours, it’s better to join another gym. At least that’s what I’m planning to do. For the price, it makes more sense to pay a little more and go to FFC and have better hours and equipment or go to la fitness for less money. The equipment and classes don’t make up for the hours.

Hours are absurd since COVID. Closes at 9:00 sharp. Really hard to get in there when you have kids or need to work late (both for me). This causes a huge rush for the short time they’re open after work where it is crowded and you often wait for equipment. Also, not sure what they’re doing with their AC but be prepared to exercise in an 85 degree gym in the summer. Lastly, slight lack of equipment maintenance. Note these are complaints that management could easily correct but I doubt they lack the care to address, much less responding to this review.

Great gym, only serious knock are the hours which are still restricted since covid. Closing at 9pm on weekdays and 7pm on the weekends is unacceptable. Other than that, this place has everything you need in a gym with all the machines and free-weights + a lap pool, sauna / steam room.

November 2024 update: Insanely busy from 5:30am-9am and 4pm-7:30pm every weekday. Literally every station and machine are in use and there are several people waiting for the most popular stuff. I have left early few times because a normal workout would take 3x as long with the amount of people there. Need to extend hours or cut off new members.

The pool is used by seniors who walk in their sneakers inside the pool. The staff walks around the pool in their street shoes right of the street to give gheir classes. Your concrrns are not only not adressed but instead there is retribution, a cost asdociated when you complain about staff or members paying for classes like the little old lady turning on the bubbles without asking. They will harass you. They will push you out. Stay away! Lincoln Park is full of great clubs.

The biggest downside is how early the gym closes, especially on weekends. That leads to it being insanely crowded most of the time since everyone’s trying to fit in their workouts around the same hours. Other than that, it could be a really solid gym—the setup is good, and the sauna is great.

I parked at LPAC Lincoln Park. They allowed someone to park in front of me WITHOUT leaving their car keys.

These people YELLED at me the first time I visited the gym and demanded that I park at a certain spot and leave my car keys. The rules are selectively applied.

I’m seriously reconsidering my decision to get a membership.

As other members have noted, it's dirty and crowded. The men's locker room is small for the size of membership, and can be disgusting, especially when crowded. The smell is over the top, the carpet is filthy, with people trying to get past each other to open locker doors in the little alcoves, and jockeying for space on the benches. For a lot of people, it can be hard to get motivated to go to the gym. When you know you have to go to a dirty, crowded place, it's even harder. There's a ton of potential in this place, but only good management and capital improvement can solve the problems. Unfortunately, better options are few in LP, and they probably know that, so maybe they figure take it or leave it.

I suspect a trainer used my information in the system to find my home and email address. I was contacted through an unknown number actively monitoring me which I eventually was able to connect back to CAC as it used the same system as the official number. Weeks later I was banned from the gym without explanation through a unprofessional email, and then began receiving spam emails and calls from inappropriate organizations. I contacted the owner, Pat, with a formal complaint requesting a confirmation as to whether the number is connected to CAC and to look into who accessed my information. It's been 3 weeks with zero response at all.

Update: After retrieving data from Textnow i've discovered the trainer who was texting me from multiple number is Ashley Huber who also is a trainer at the F45 next door. Still nothing done about it

2 stars for the location, layout, pool/hot tub and it's a decent value for the price. However, this location is in DESPERATE need of a deep clean and detailing! I'm actually shocked they didn't take care of this before the January rush. My "favorite" pink crumb (pictured) has been chilling on the leg press machine since I joined over a year ago. Lol. Lots of dirt, dust, and hair, so it's not a surprise that some of the machines stick or get damaged. Agree with past reviewers that the treadmills need leveling too. Ultimately cancelling my membership to join Planet Fitness (!) I included this feedback in my cancellation request a month ago but pink crumb lives on.

I really love this gym, but it has gone downhill.

The equipment (handles, grips, bars, etc) were recently updated and its clear that the owner bought the cheapest junk on amazon they could find.

The bench press pads and extremely hard and covered with slippery, cheap vinyl that will legitimately injure you.

The grips on machines will often be tattered and ripped for months before they are replaced.

The treadmills are poorly leveled and most of them shake side to side.

Sad and poor business decisions for a somewhat upscale club that I love.

On the upside, it is very clean, the employees are nice, the contracts are simple and the space is absolutely stunning.

4 to 3 stars because post Covid the price has gone up $20+/month while the equipment has stayed the same and lacking upkeep. But most importantly, the hours are horrible now. The athletic clubs used to open at 5am and close at 11p/12a. Please bring this back.

I don’t understand the equipment philosophy of this gym; it’s too spread out, emphasizes circuit machines over rack weights, and they removed certain rack weights in favor of circuit machines that achieve a similar lift but not the same range of motion or activated muscle groups (why did they get rid of their military press?). A pulley is almost always broken, and so is the water fountain; considering it’s practically unusable during resolution season, I just don’t understand why they don’t make better use of their space with more rack equipment.

I really like this gym, BUT the hours suck if you’re not a morning person. I have a standard 9-5 and by the time I’m done, walk my dogs and eat dinner I get maybe 1.5 hours until they’re closed. Today (Friday) I worked 30 mins late and tried to get ready quickly but would’ve only had 45 minutes there.. it’s just not accommodating for a lot of people. Considering getting a membership somewhere else with more flexible hours :(

The quality here has gone down significantly over the past 6 months. The equipment in particular needs to be better taken care of. A lot of the spin bikes don’t work properly & there only 2 available on the cardio floor (neither of which have a working screen on them) making it extremely difficult to be able to ride alone since there are classes going on in the cycle room throughout the day. The pool clocks seem to never be working and half the lockers in the women’s locker room don’t work. Lately the weight floor has had a stench that hasn’t seemed to go away. $80+ a month is WAY to expensive for all the issues going on here.

EDIT:
After pausing my membership for a month to try out another gym I went back to cancel my membership all together and was told I needed to email another company to do. I emailed the company and they told me I could not cancel my membership for the following month since it was currently on “pause” mind you they still charge you $15 a month during the pause. I was told I would have to pay for the FULL next month and then I could cancel. I then had my fiancé go in and try to cancel it and wouldn’t you know they let him do it on the spot, no questions asked…what a frustrating, time consuming, money wasting experience.

I would not recommend the Chicago Athletic Clubs to anyone. There are nicer, more well-kept gyms in Chicago for around the same price.

I actually liked going to the gym since it was nice I could go to other locations and it was close to my house but my god, canceling my membership is the typical stereotype of what you would expect.

They don't handle their own membership so you have to ask them for a code to then pass along to the company that does manage it Then they will determine if your reason for cancellation is acceptable, just lie and say you're moving out of Chicago. Once they do that you still have to pay another months membership and they will call you relentlessly if you are late on your payment you shouldn't even have to make. Of course then when I tried calling them I was on hold for 45 minutes.

Things don't have to be this way, we deserve better.

Surprised to read bad reviews on this place. My experience has been phenomenal. Front desk staff is very friendly, competent, and helpful. Facilities are very nice, clean, and well taken care of, everything is always stocked. The men's steam sauna is largest and nicest I've found yet in the city, SO good. With a pool, jacuzzi, classes, etc I never feel like I'm lacking anything here.

Also huge shout out to the personal trainer Chad. Legit the best trainer I've ever worked with, knows his stuff very well and has helped me improve my form on all lifts. He is grounded, supportive, optimistic, and has less ego than any trainer I've worked with before him. Stellar guy, if you're looking for personal training look no further.

This review is only for the predatory contract as others have stated. They auto-renew your membership without telling you and force you to pay for another month. I love this place. LPAC has an enormous weightroom (6 squat racks; several benches, cable stations, and dumbbell racks; many machines) that makes it easy to get the equipment you want. The cardio room is similarly massive and the group classes are free with membership.

It can get crowded in the 6–7:30 am window, and after 5 pm too, and I wish they were open a bit later in the evening, but that's all okay. I'm very happy with my membership.

I've been using this gym for 4 years now. Great workout facility, has everything you need and most of the things you'd want. Well maintained and clean, but the hours are not great. They shortened their hours in COVID and have shown no signs of extending them back to the original hours. It's been enough of an issue for me that I gave them 2 starts. Would go to a new gym but I have a lower membership fee locked in and don't want to pay double for the same amenities.

It's impossible to find a perfect gym for the right price. Wouldn't we all like to be able to afford Midtown Athletic Club or East Bank Club? But we can't, and may not live convenient to their locations. So we have CAC clubs. Not as fancy as Equinox or FFC, but a step above L.A. Fitness and XSport, and ahead of Planet Fitness-----in terms of facilities.

Not the most convenient location for me personally, sometimes it takes me 20 mins to get there. But if it's not crowded, it's worth it. It does get very, very crowded, think Mon - Thurs around 6PM.....I just give up on lifting weights those days, go to treadmill....Sometimes I walk around just seeing what I can do where I won't have to awkwardly stand around and wait for a machine or pool lane.....but this is part of the experience. The good thing is, when you do this, you don't have to feel guilty about skipping the gym, and it's an abbreviated experience. You may not hit your goals, but you put in the effort, and the "mental benefit" of exercise is still there to a degree lol

When you can use the machines and it is not very crowded, it's totally worth the membership. But I pay $80 through Gympass. Would recommend that if it is an option as it seems to avoid the auto-renew membership issues some have mentioned. $80 is less per month than the month-to-month, but more than the annual rate. Without Gympass.....it's a closer call. The YMCA nearby here for $50 was a good compromise, would consider those if this didn't work for you.

Great place to lift weights. 6-7 squat racks /deadlift platforms so there's always at least 1 open. Multiple dumbbell racks, multiple cable fly machines, tons of equipment, huge weight room space. The people in the weight room are all chill, mostly adults minding their business getting it in. Haven't seen any TikTok fitness kids filming themselves. Relaxed, friendly vibe, everyone is focused on making themselves better. New to Chicago, looked at multiple places to join, super happy with my decision.

I dont recommend--I had prepaid a one-year membership, and moved out of state during the middle of the membership. No biggie--I didn't try to claw back any of the prepaid cost, understanding i had agreed to pay for a year under my contract.

Now, many months later, I see a 60 dollar charge from this gym. They transitioned me to a monthly membership at the end of my pre-paid year without notice. I called to dispute the charge, of course, since I live out of state and was under a one-year membership contract. The transition to monthly should have been communicated, as I have not scanned into the gym there in at least 6 months. So annoying.

The trainer I was paired with has also been great! If you’re looking for someone to help you reach your goals, I recommend Chad Dixon! He listens to what your goals are and creates a routine for you to get there. I’ve had several sessions so far and am already noticing positive changes.

I’ve been coming to Lincoln Park athletic for close to 15 years now. I live here in Chicago and also in Los Angeles so two years ago I had joined equinox where I belonged for the past two years. I have to say, out of all the Chicago Athletic Clubs this is the one I like the best. The Lakeview location reminds me of going to a gay bar. I like the Lincoln Park location because it’s a clean cut, classy group of people that are respectful to each other and to the cleanliness of the machines.

The gym is immaculate, the staff is great and the locker rooms are always clean especially the men’s locker room ~ completely fastidious.

Considering I was paying almost $200 more for a luxury club, I would say this is pretty close in regards to equipment offering and space to Equinox ~ the only difference is, the walls aren’t all black and there is not marble floors in the locker rooms and steam rooms but other than that there’s really no difference between this and Equinox.

Love this place. I have been a member for many years! Weight room is clean, bright and open. Great instructors/classes as well! Pat and the LPAC staff work hard to maintain a professional atmosphere!

I love this place, and have continued to enjoy my workouts with the new & necessary safety protocols. I just saw a review from someone named Emily Owen and kinda wanted to balance out her ridiculous review...I've personally interacted with Susannah at LPAC and she's always been a complete delight! I had a similar issue with the payment processes during the quarantine, but it was resolved and I very quickly understood what happened and how I'd misunderstood the situation. I think Emily must be mistaken, or simply doesn't understand how to talk to people/how businesses work. In any case, she seems like a totally unpleasant person (look at her past reviews) and is besmirching this good company & Susannah's name because, it seems, she messed something up. Talk about a Karen, totally unprofessional.

Not worth the money at all. Overcrowded, you have to arrive 45 minutes ahead of a class to get a spot. Every time I went and all the lockers were full so people would stand in the locker room and stalk the people that were leaving. Not a lot of floor space for personal workouts and and the upstairs cardio room spells terrible and is very hot.

They kept everyone on the auto pay after the pandemic and snuck in an email in between their spam emails about their app that doesn’t work. They charged people even if you called to cancel the same day.

The gym is usually clean and it's a great place to workout when you can find something, anything to workout on. A lot of this is not a gym problem but a people problem. I'm giving this gym a four star primarily because who knew that while people are working out, they have to take 10 minute craps and a line can form for the 2 stalls.

Nice gym with a bigger free weight lifting space than the one in Bucktown. Decent value for the money (especially if you take advantage of scheduled classes). Staff and other gym goers here have been great in my experience.

Love this gym. Great service and classes. It feels like a community gym that the members and staff are proud to take care of. Best gym in the CAC network.

I love this gym. I was notified of the 30 day termination notice also.

Pros: Can go to any other gym location
Sauna and steam room are very nice
Walk in yoga classes
Stellar gym equipment
Open space concept is very cool. Doesn't have a dimly lit gym
feel!
Beautiful gym, great classes, good facilities, not ridiculously
expensive

Cons: Can get crowded in the evenings after work hours (pretty typical at a downtown gym) Considering the fact its a larger gym in the city, that's to be expected, I don't see why that demotes it to a 1 star gym. I would argue it's crowded because people like it.

Went to try rock climbing for the first time. Tried to charge me 30 bucks for a 1 day gym pass. Didn't tell me that the first day is free for a new member. When asked about it feigned ignorance.

This gym generally has good equipment and I’m happy they recently installed a fourth squat rack. However LPAC can be very frustrating if you have to go after work and appreciate programming. I joined this gym because I moved neighborhoods - my old gym was FFC and while it got busy in the evenings too, I never felt it was an impediment to my workout. I feel like I spend a lot of time at LPAC walking around to look for free space or a machine and have to change my planned routines often. I shudder thinking about what January will be like. Considering the price of this gym, it can be frustrating to feel like your workout time isn’t as effective as it could be, especially when you have specific training goals in mind.

To everyone ripping into this place for the number of members, yes, if you go during typical gym hours it will be crowded. You should expect this when living in the city. The facilities are great. The equipment is clean and works well. Their hours offer you a more flexible workout schedule and I love going here.

Seriously Overcrowded. Predatory Membership Policies.

If you can go to the gym between 9AM-3PM you're fine, in fact its a great gym if you can go on off hours. Otherwise you might as well not come. Which is why I stopped going. If you're lifting weights I'd expect to wait 10+ minutes for things like bench and curl bars in realist weight ranges and don't even think about "getting in line" for the squat rack, they only have 2 and it feels like there are about 100+ people at the gym at any given time. This isn't even the worst part.

The worst part is how they try to lock you into payments.

I signed up for a displayed fixed-length membership. Little did I know that there is an auto-renewal policy. Which isn't even in the Terms and Agreements, but come to find out it's in a supplementary "Note." So if you do decide that this is the place to waste your time at, then make sure you bring your lawyer.

You can't even download the terms and agreements from the website, they only host it in a "non-downloadable" format that's hard to read. Best of all, they sell your collection amount. For me I stopped going, moved and had discontinued the card that I had linked up so they auto-renewed my membership for a year, falsely charging a discontinued credit card and then sold my "debt" to a company in India with only a PO Box as an address. So now I can't even dispute the claim with the company I have the issue with. A real bunch of crooks.

WARNING TO ALL MEMBERS!!! When I signed up for my membership I told them it would be short term because I would be moving. They told me that is not a problem just let them know when I want to cancel, because I could cancel at anytime. My experience with other gyms is you have to cancel before you are billed for the next month. However when I went to cancel my membership at CAC I was told I had to give at least 30 days notice. I did not realize and was just under 30 days. This resulted in me being charged for a month that I will not be using because I will be living thousands of miles away. When I spoke with ABC Financial Services, CAC's billing company, and the staff at Lincoln Park Athletic Club about waiving this charge they said they couldn't help me. I would think that an athletic club that prides itself on high quality equipment, classes, and experience would use a financial institute with similar principles as apposed to ABC Financial Services which has a bad track record as shown through their many terrible reviews online. I find this whole thing very frustrating and not a good business model. I use to love CAC but now this has left a bad taste in my mouth. I would discourage people who are not members from joining.

The best way to describe LPAC is to compare it to a pub. It has a homey feeling about it where everyone comes here for personal improvement. LPAC has complementary parking in its lot that is maintained my friendly staff which is a necessity if you are commuting by car. The upstairs weight lifting area is extraordinary as it opens up and feels much larger that it looks from the outside. All the equipment is brand new. The classes are at convenient times and are offered for just about everything: yoga, cycling, weight lifting, water aerobics, boxing, rock climbing, etc. Well worth the investment! Sometimes I go just to relax in the sauna, steam room, or the hot tub.

The facilities here are excellent. The people who work here are very nice and do an excellent job of giving you all of the information. It is more expensive than let's says an LA Fitness, or Xsport. However, the equipment, the multiple locations through out the city, and the fact that there is free parking is well worth the price. Also, if you work for a non-profit, they provide an excellent discount!

Though a bit pricey, LPAC (along with its sister gyms in the CACs) is a fantastic option for a comprehensive fitness center. Friendly staff, excellent (and new!) facilities, and a great arrangement in which you can access all gyms in the CACs family at a slightly higher fee.

Hands down the best gym in Chicago! I have been a member of LPAC for about about 4 years now and will never leave. They offer so many great classes. I am particularly obsessed with HIIT (high intensity interval training) on Monday and Thursday nights. The instructor is awesome and makes class so much fun! There is so much energy in the room and what a great workout! They offer so many other classes Body Pump, CXWorx, Full Body Blast, Abs & Arms and the list goes on. I don't know what I would do without LPAC and all of their amazing workout classes.

Great gym but a little pricey. If you are looking for a clean, professional and convenient gym (located right off the Diversey Brown Line stop) then this is a great option. They offer a ton of classes (which are included in your monthly fee), and the instructors are great about accommodating all skill levels. Try Yoga Sculpt on Friday's with Kraig or HardCore with Linda on Monday.

They offer a ton of discounts: corporate, couples, roommates and I believe you can even get a special price is you are a nanny, teacher or student.

They also have a mobile app that is pretty handy for keeping up with the class schedules and the club hours.

Great fitness option in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. Clean locker rooms, up to date equipment (cardio & weights) and a great variety of group classes to choose from. For those with young children, this facility offers a great kids club for little ones as young as 8 weeks old.

Since renovating in the summer of 2012, LPAC is one of the premier gyms in Chicago. The only thing that could improve the member experience were if the gym were open later (closes at 11 pm during the week). The climbing wall is a treat on summer days. The group fitness schedule is always fresh and exciting.
