I've been a member here for 6 years and the club has never been worse. The staff who work here are all great but the club itself is pricey. Rates have gone up significantly since the remodel, which would be fine if the gym wasn't trying to nickel and dime on everything else at the same time. They replaced the old keychain fob entry with wristbands and now charge $10 fees if you forget your wristband, along with $25 to replace it. They no longer serve free coffee after 8am, instead selling over priced coffee in the cafe. Kid town is now half the size it used to be with no playground, my kids don't enjoy it as much. All of the cafes are closed at 3pm on a Sunday, which makes family pool days less convenient. Half of the treadmills have issues with tv signal frequently, even after being fixed by staff. The people and equipment here are excellent, especially after the remodel- just be prepared to pay a premium for everything.

This review is for parents of kids 3-12 who are considering investing in a membership at Midtown, who value the idea of doing something that engages your whole family in physical wellness & activity. Midtown redid the Kidtown area & there's a basketball court next door the kids can use. However, as the months went on with our membership, I've become more frustrated as more parents have been sending their kids into Kidtown with their home iPad... bc when I'd pick up my kids - especially the young ones (5 and 3 years old) - they'd either be on someone else's iPad or staring over a kids' shoulder watching them play games/movies... and they'd have a giant meltdown afterward because 2 hours of iPad time is way too much for them. And listen, we have no qualms with screen time for the kids but I do have a big issue with paying almost $500/month for a gym membership where my kids are going to be on an iPad for 2 hours at a time. I could work out at home for free and put them on a screen... but also, this is factually proven to be harmful for kids' mental & developmental health. I wrote the manager, Stephanie about my concerns bc it was becoming exhausting. I urged her to consider a policy where they ask parents to refrain from sending their kids to Kidtown with iPads. Not only is this antithetical to a high end gym that stands for physical/mental wellness... more importantly, it's concerning I don't know these parents - are there parental controls that prohibit inappropriate content on their ipads? What kind of content are my young kids being exposed to? There's a lot of dangerous & inappropriate things on the internet that are masked as things for 'kids.' It feels like a valid concern. Also... it's a gym! My kids are on screens at home, at school, at their friends' places... we go to the gym for a break from that. To get socially & physically involved with others who (presumably) share that core value. A week went by and I hadn't heard back from Stephanie... at which time I followed up, only to have her write an email dismissing my concerns. Saying they wouldn't enact a policy because it's prohibitive to parents' choices. I know a bunch of other families at Midtown so I called some up to ask their experience... most of them said they hate sending their kids in with iPads but have started doing so bc the kids complain that other kids are on their iPads and won't play with them. That they were tired of their kids complaining so much about going to the gym, they just wanted it to be easier. Which I really do understand... if there are any opportunities to get a break as a parent, you do what you gotta do. But as a high end gym and wellness facility, this interaction with me offered the opportunity to ask themselves... WHY are parents sending their kids in with iPads at the gym? How can we make Kidtown more fun for kids? Because if it's more fun for kids, it's more fun for parents! Also parents don't put their kids on iPads bc they like it or believe it's morally right.. they do it bc they're overwhelmed. As a gym, in this case, there's the opportunity to make it more engaging for the kids & make the parents feel good knowing for 2 hours their kids are playing & having fun! Not on screens. Anyway, in the end, the gym didn't budge on this & I've realized that it's not right or wrong for them to have that policy. It's not right or wrong for me to feel the way I do. It's just not the right place for our family as they don't share our core values of physical wellness for the kids. If you're a parent who just wants space to work out & you're okay with your kids being on screens so you can get that time to yourself, which is totally fine (Kidtown also has a tv and Nintendo Switch), then you'll be happy with this gym. If you're a parent who has kids ages 3-12 and you would rather your kids not be on a screen for 2 hours, this is not the gym for you. Lifetime Fitness in Lake Zurich for example has classes (Ninja warrior studio, brain games, art studio, gymnastics, martial arts etc.) that you can drop your kids off to while you work out.

Went through the whole on boarding process NOT ONCE did anyone ever mention that you HAVE to be enrolled for a year before you can cancel. We were there for like over an hour you would think that would be vital information to disclose transparently before asking us to sign. Disgusting business practice, very shady for what is allegedly a luxury gym. I’d go with lifetime over this place as you cancel with a reasonable policy and you cancel with a human at your club not some faceless corporate bot.

I would have given a much higher rating if not for ending this on such a sour grifting note

Midtown is an excellent facility. They have a very clean and modern open gym. The trainers and coaches are all very friendly and seem to know what they are doing. The cafe has a great selection of snacks and beverages to choose from, with friendly people working behind the counter.
The indoor pool has been slightly updated but still looks pretty dated.
The main issues I’m having is the cost of everything. The price of admission alone if much higher than any other place in the area that you would go to workout. Even though it costs more, Midtown still nickel and dimes for everything. Pilates classes costs more ($40 PER CLASS). Cardio tennis costs more ($25-$40 PER CLASS). And now the regular drip COFFEE costs more. I can get a free cup of coffee at a department store while shopping for toasters, yet my $600 a month club doesn’t provide it? It just seems like something so cheap could be a nice free incentive to keep clients around longer. The average customer is probably paying almost $3000 a year to be a member. That one customer alone could probably cover the coffee bill.
Stop thinking about how you can milk more out of your members and try thinking about how you can make them happy and keep them for longer!
The new app is nice too by the way.

I understand that this gym (Midtown Athletic Club) has amenities that are considered luxurious compared to most gyms, i.e., a sauna, both an indoor and outdoor pool and a giant lobby (I don't see the point in that when they could have put a REAL library in its stead but that's just my opinion); however, the membership price is what I'm struggling to understand. 6 years ago it would have cost 170 dollars to register by yourself and roughly 200 dollars to register as a family (if you don't believe me you can look this up on Reddit by typing in Midtown Athletic Club's membership's subscription). Now, it's $270 to register by yourself and 320 dollars to register as a family. Chalk it up to inflation and RISING COSTS, but at this point, I'd consider it another cliche response to continue selling their con membership prices. We have been coming to this gym for almost 20 years, and it is sad to see how greedy and bold this business has become in trying to take your money like so many others. Also, you must pay one last time plus another $50 for the next month before your membership gets canceled. In terms of the ambiance and so-called LIBRARY, all it has is a bunch of ripped-up classics literally TORN UP back to back, making it impossible to tell which book you're trying to read. Still, it's another reason to charge you an additional 50 dollars because of how GOOD it looks, though good seems to me a bit of an overstatement for the decor in this gym. Most of the people who also come here to work out, including some of the instructors, come off as very pretentious and self-conceited, for what exactly is beyond me. Still, there is almost nobody willing to say hi to you here or ask you how your day is going; mind as well consider the front desk to be comprised of a bunch of automated robots who only say hi when you walk in and bye (if they even remember to) when you leave. Overall, you're better off getting a YMCA/Planet Fitness membership where you know what you're getting regarding the people who work and go there and the honest and upfront price. Very fake and rude people come to work out in this gym, which, by the way, tend to mostly be spoiled high schoolers whose parents obviously are paying for their gym membership through credit cards–money that isn't actually theirs, and yet still act like they own the whole place–not even counting the plethora of gold diggers who only want to speak to you if they think you're rich and can get you to also pay for their scam membership. But hey, if that's your thing, then go for it. It definitely wasn't ours.

Awesome place to exercise while the kids are entertained. Well-managed kids play area - I rarely if ever see my kids in front of the tv, they're always colouring or on the playset or playing with other kids. Great gym, lots of classes which I should take more advantage of. Nice safe and clean pools with lifeguards aplenty. 4th of July festivities were lots of fun. Great community, everyone is so nice to my kids.

Update: took some private training sessions with Tim. He is great. First time I've seen definition since we had kids. I've been taking boxing classes with Katja, Michelle, and Bridgette. I started taking the sunday morning classes with Jesse and i feel like I'm learning a lot. Tough and very fun, and the timings work perfectly for my schedule.

My husband and I joined Midtown in January 2024. Midtown is a luxury club where it is not crowded like other "local" clubs, it is a pleasure to stay there. Each of us has a few favorite classes run by different trainers. I loved pilates! which is run by several great and professional trainers, Lauren, Linda, Elizabeth, Lindsey, and Barre classes with fantastic and very professional trainers Lauren and Linda. Also Eveli's classes are my favorites ! They are all great and professional and you really want to exercise in their classes! I really love them!
Everyone will find something for themselves here, I promise you that! you will love this club! Many great integration events are also organized here!

The renovation is outstanding!
The club is state of the art. New classes challenging. They have made such improvement.
However, this would not be of such high standards if we didn’t have the most exceptional instructors.

I have been a member of Midtown Athletic Club since 2022. When I first joined, I loved the vibe of the club. Employees were upbeat, fun and always willing to help the members. Although I joined for the gym aspect, I really liked that it had a country club feeling since it isn't as large as some of the corporate gyms like Lifetime, LA Fitness, etc. Then the remodel happened and everything changed. Many employees that were the most hospitable and outgoing were let go for reasons I still don't understand. The results of the remodel were underwhelming to say the least. The worst part of all were the membership dues skyrocketed. I would have been happy to pay higher dues for a club that delivered an incredible experience but this is not the case. Now, the club is left so different and I have mixed feelings about my future as a member. The entire experience inside this building has changed from a small business to a corporate giant. The members are great but the employees who made Midtown feel like a family are gone. The tennis program has drastically gone downhill under new management. I developed a love for tennis after joining Midtown and now I will never take a tennis class here again. The manager of the tennis program is new and has made changes that have left this part of the club very empty. The cost of the tennis programs and court fees are astronomical which make it very unattractive to people who want to try the sport. The costs could be overlooked if there was a stellar tennis program being offered with energy and fun but those days are now over after he came in. It's very sad. Unfortunately, the tennis program is full of gossip, drama and nepotism amongst the employees. It trickles down and ruins the experience for the members.

Bottom line is, the membership dues are high but the problem is with the results delivered. I would say the dues are similar to other high end clubs but what you get in return is NOT worth the costs of Midtown. You would be better off at Lifetime Lake Zurich for the price Midtown charges. You get much more for your money and since Midtown is now just let every other big box corporate gym, there is no difference in experience.

Pros: Members are great, outside pool opens stays open until October, fitness coaches/personal trainers are great
Cons: Tons of employee drama, high indoor tennis court fees ($40/hr), bad tennis coaches, poor club management, lack of customer service, one year commitment (no month-to-month option for membership), horrible junior tennis instructor that has no control over kids, tennis program costs do NOT match quality of classes delivered

I have been a member here since June 17, 2006. Everyone has always been so helpful to me from the beginning.

However, there are a few people that I would like to personally thank.

The first ones are Neil and Melanie. Neil got me motivated to work out and showed me how to properly use the equipment. He always tailored the exercises to my needs. He always makes it a point to see how I am doing whenever I am at Midtown, even to this day. He is a very wonderful and outgoing person.

Melanie took over for my training after Neil and I have been with her ever since. She also makes it a point to tailor the exercises to my needs. She always walks me out to whoever brings me to the club when the session is over and she has an excellent sense of humor. Another point to make about Melanie is even when she is unavailable to see me, she always sets me up with someone else to work with me. This brings me to the next people I would like to thank.

Joanna and Spencer. They are the ones who cover my sessions when Melanie is unavailable. They are also very friendly and outgoing people and even said whenever I needed someone to train with because Melanie is unavailable, they would do it. I am extremely grateful to them for that.

Finally, Antonio. He is one of the maintenance workers at the health club. He always helps me with the door when needed. Also, if I had a problem such as the shower chair coming loose or the pool/hot tub fluctuating in temperature, he wastes no time in fixing it.

I have really enjoyed my time at Midtown as a member and am excited to see what further memories will be made. One milestone I am looking forward to celebrating at the club is as follows: on June 17, 2026, I will celebrate 20 years as a member of Midtown.

Hilary’s combat is a great work out and she brings a lot of energy to help get the most out of your workout. Will, Nathan, and Eveli’s upper and lower body blast classes, they are the perfect way to get your strength in a short amount of time. Melanie, Hilary, and Bridgette’s sprint classes are the best cardio workout in 30 minutes and they all are amazing instructors. Bridgette’s, Jason’s and Katya’s boxing classes are another favorite. Melanie and Bridgette’s body pump classes are a great total body strength class with amazing instructors. Battle with Will, Tim or Joanna are also excellent!

I just finished another super fun and energized Vibe class with Will! Such a great way to get your Saturday going! Will’s energy and fun is so contagious and gets all of us going!!

I typically do sprint classes during the week. The classes I have taken are with Bev on Sunday, Hillary on Monday, Melanie on Tuesday and Bridget on Friday!! Each and every instructor mentioned are so motivating and encourages the entire class to push and fight through. We have a peloton at home but nothing pushes me like being in a class with any of the mentioned instructors!! There are so many classes and instructors I can’t wait to try when my schedule allows. I have nothing but great things about all the amazing instructors all the class offerings!!

The tennis program is amazing! I started tennis with “tennis in no time” in April 2023. All the coaches are so unique and have such a fun and encouraging way of teaching! I have been lucky to Coached by Johnny, Ulises, Sharon, Mike and Krystina! From Cardio Tennis, Drills and Fox Valley…it’s been an amazing fun experience thanks to their love of the game and their unique ability to teach us at different levels to improve and grow.

The Group Fitness classes at Midtown are the reason you should join Midtown. Hillary, Jess and Ann add such great energy to Combat classes. Melanie and Bridgette C. get my heart pumping in Sprint. Joanna, Katie, Tim, Scott and Leslie always challenge the group in Battle. I just added EBF to my workout and Katya and Jason are great. Newly added 1/2 hour body blast, with Will, Nathan, and Eveli, is a quick targeted workout. Front desk people are awesome too!

I joined Midtown in January. I have loved all the classes and sometimes I do personal training. Personal training with Scott is the best. He is knowledgeable and pushes me despite me being older. If you ever need a trainer, Scott is definitely the one to reach out to. He also is very athletic and is fantastic with athletes for speed and agility. His basketball skills are amazing but he works with athletes in all sports. Reach out to Scott if you want to get strong and fast!

My favorite class is Katie's 5:15 endure class. I get up early just to take her class. She is motivating and encouraging. Try her early morning class!!

Me and my family love being at Midtown. We like being there for so many reasons. We love to work-out with our personal trainer, Scott. He is an outstanding trainer that knows how to push us more than we ever would be on our own and yet he makes it so fun. He genuinely cares about our health and well being. I love the tennis coaches, Nick & Mike. They too push us to be the best we could be. These coaches and trainers make us feel that they truly are invested in us.

My family enjoys just spending time there whether it be laying poolside or eating the nutritious yummy meals. We love the super high energy and clean, open, zen like atmosphere that makes us not want to leave and keeps us coming back.

The new Midtown Athletic club looks so aesthetic and fantastic! There are so many things that are fabulous but the giant bookshelf at the entrance(lobby) caught my attention. It has a huge collection of books but no cover pages. You can pick a book without knowing what the title is or the author. What a cool idea! So appropriate for the saying "don't judge the book by its cover" 🤩

I attend the Palatine Midtown location because of the quality of their employees. Cindy S. who staffs the front desk is very hospitable and always available to assist with scheduling and other administrative matters. The Pilates instructors Cindy B., Stacy N., Linda and Sharon are excellent and one of the reasons I continue my membership. They have done wonders with helping me achieve my goal of living without back pain. Yoga instructors Grace, Veda and Nancy are also knowledgeable and make each practice refreshing as well as challenging. Christine in the pro shop is available to assist in sportswear selection and offers suggestions to items that would work for members. Finally, the housekeeping staff is attentive to the needs of the members and keeps the facility clean.

This review is for Monday morning/ Wednesday afternoon sprint with Hilary, my favorite spin instructor. Ten years ago (!) I was a terrified newcomer to sprint and Hilary was so warm and welcoming that she took all the intimidation out of learning this new to me challenging workout technique.
I was rebuilding my stamina and strength following some health challenges and Hilary shepherded me through every step of the way. I was even able to get into better shape for some big family events by showing up every week for Hilary’s spin sessions. Her positive attitude and encouraging tone, without any shaming or negativity are the perfect approach for me. You can select songs for your birthday mix and Michelle makes you feel special. She puts a lot of work in selecting songs that coordinate with the holidays. Michelle has a huge following because of all that she puts into every class. I recommend her classes for anyone at any level.

Midtown Palatine is my go-to home for my personal yoga practice. Their beautiful studio and class schedule provide a diverse menu of options for folks with all manner of yoga experience complete with all the ways that yoga can benefit the body and mind (vinyasa, power, restorative, etc). The instructors are so supportive and knowledgeable, I have even managed to call them my friends. Ashley's class on Tuesday is such a great way to get a workout in afterwork, it's truly our little family, and her instruction has both improved my practice and often cleared my mind. While Jill's classes combine flow and music, spontaneity, with a little humor thrown in there too to keep the yoga workout feeling more like play with pals. Nancy Michael’s pilates class is outstanding! It’s challenging but at the same time Nancy gives many options for beginners as well as the more advanced pilate member. She has a personality that makes the class fun, (the class goes by so fast) and at the same challenges everyone to a higher level of work. This is one of the best classes I participate in at Midtown. I enjoy it so much, I’ve been doing it the last 8 years. Doing this class I’ve been able to change my body and I’m in the excellent shape and have lost 19 Ibs.

Bridgette Calamari, Hillary Schwartz, Melanie Desalvo are outstanding Les Mills spin instructors! I love taking all there classes. They are passionate, intense, and caring about their work. They challenge you to a higher level that you could never do yourself! All three of these ladies are awesome, they make the class fun!

Michelle O’Neal is absolutely an amazing and passionate instructor. She’s pours her heart and soul into her power spin class and pilates classes. Her Pilates classes are so well designed that she gives you a variety of exercises to improve your body. In her power spin class she has tremendous energy that is contagious to the entire class. Like the other spin teachers I’ve mentioned in my previous review Michelle care about her members and is a tremendous teacher and even a better person.

Grace, is an outstanding yoga instructor! Her knowledge of yoga is brilliant and extensive. She’s one of the best yoga teachers I’ve ever encountered. Her yoga teaching has improved my flexibility, core, and endurance. I will continue to take her class, and would encourage others to do the same.

Midtown athletic club in Palatine could be considered a poor man’s country club. Especially given the extensive renovation they just completed mid 2024. I would’ve left a five star review, but the club has a chronic problem of not being able to keep the pools well maintained. Otherwise the rest of the club is maintained at a five star level.

The best part about Midtown athletic club spin class with Patti B. She has the world’s greatest playlist, and the energy in her class are fantastic.

If you’re in the northwest suburbs and are looking for something different than the standard health club I recommend you check out Midtown athletic club and Patti B’s spin class.

I use to be a member at Midtown but left as I’m spending lots of time in Florida these days. I miss the place a lot especially the people. One of my favorite memories is 5:15 AM spin class with Patti B. It is tough to get up that early but Patti’s class was so fun it made it worth the sleep deprivation.

I started at Midtown January 2023 and this place has been more than just a workout facility it has also been a community and brought me friends for life. One of the best things about it is the morning crew, specifically Pattie’s spin class twice a week! I have spent the 5am hour at midtown for over 20 years. A special shout out goes to the incredibly talented and motivating group class instructors who are there for us at the start of the day: Patti B for cycle, Stacey N and Linda D for Pilates, Katie B for apex/endure, Melanie D for battle & apex. Cindy S at the front desk is a gem who is always there to greet and support us. It's also a special treat to take Michelle O's cycle and boxing classes once in a blue moon.

While I rarely get to enjoy it, the outdoor pool area is spectacular as well.

We have a family membership, and it keeps us active together. As a busy working mom, we try to come at least once a week to enjoy the pool (indoor and outdoor!) and sauna/hot tub. The newly remodeled facilities are beautiful and motivating, and the variety of classes, especially Ignite with Lindsey (my favorite!), keeps my workouts interesting. I wish they offered Ignite more often!

My partner and I have been members at Midtown for about a year now. Midtown is an absolutely fantastic fitness space. The club is extremely clean and the environment welcoming.
