I recently had the pleasure of visiting North Wall, and I'm so glad I did—what a hidden gem! This facility is incredibly welcoming and offers a fantastic climbing experience for everyone. Even as a 60+ year old beginner, I found it easy and enjoyable to get started.

You can rent climbing shoes and chalk on-site, or bring your own. The staff, including Adam, Liz, and Elijah, are fantastic and will literally "show you the ropes." For those new to climbing, I highly recommend the auto-belay room. It's a secure and comfortable way to learn the basics and build your confidence.

The main climbing area features a vast array of routes, graded from easy to expert, allowing climbers to challenge themselves or even design their own ascents. The walls are regularly reconfigured, ensuring there's always something new to try. North Wall is also great for families, with climbing options and camps available for kids.

Had so much fun here. Took five 3rd graders for some fun. They loved it. Adam was wonderful with all the kids. I climb regularly in Indianapolis, but came here while on vacation. Staff was very friendly and the facility has a large variety of styles. Slab, several angles of overhang, a cave with a roof, and some top rope routes. The top rope routes aren't very high, much shorter than other gyms I've been to. This gym is definitely boulder-focused. The weight room in the back with hang boards, weights and exercise machines was a nice addition. The shapes on the walls were very unique, nothing like I've seen before. It was very fun! This is a great gym for beginners, but also has plenty of climbs for experienced climbers too. I strongly recommend this gym!

Great bouldering location in northwestern Chicagoland. Routes are challenging and there’s quite a bit of variety, including a couple belay courses. I had a blast here and definitely felt the “burn” in my arms afterwards. Discovered that I LOVE rock climbing, when I’d never really tried it before coming to North Wall! I actually made it up the highest course and the fall back down wasn’t too bad.
The staff is also super friendly and laid back: it feels more “homey” than a chain rock climbing gym- for example, the employee on duty was climbing with me and even brought his dog in to work the day I was there!
I will definitely be back- it’s worth the hour drive for me and I’d recommend it to any rock climbing enthusiast in the area!

I walked into this place thinking, we'll this is going to be boring after 15 minutes. After 3 hours of being there and learning how to climb and how there are pathways to climb with different difficulties.. I have gone back now a few times and was extremely sore. This is my first and only experience in a climbing gym, but I have to say that I couldn't be happier with North Wall. I've had two lessons with Adam so far, and he's been just above and beyond - so supportive and informative. My only knock is that this location is almost an hour drive for me - But hey, if you guys want to open another location in the Dekalb/Sycamore area, I'll bump you up to 6 stars!

I'm usually a First Ascent person from Chicago, but hit up North Wall while visiting my parents for Thanksgiving. North Wall is great - super sick setting, nice old school holds, and great staff. Good stuff regardless of whether you wanna train and try hard, or just casually climb with some friends/family for a few hours.

My best friend has been coming here with his kids for years and I just went with the kids this past weekend. First of all I have lived in Crystal Lake for 8 years now and I had no idea this place existed. I'm always looking for activities to do with the kids and a rock climbing gym should be no exception.

My buddy had two guest passes for my kids to try out the gym for the day and I had to rent shoes and a climbing harness for my kids, and this was absolutely fair as they didn't have the necessary gear to climb.

The employee gave us the gears and gave us a brief safety run down of what to do and where to go, simple enough. The rest of the time was just them climbing and playing. We started off on the Auto-belay/Tope-rope Room side as the kids wanted to get comfortable with climbing first. I have a 10 year old and a 5 year old and the 10 year old had no issues attaching herself to the auto-belay but the 5 year old had issues and I had to help him out every time to connect and disconnect himself. Then they wanted to go on the "expert" side where there are no safety belays. This room is surprisingly large and kids climbing section was cool as heck along with hidden a room for climbing. The kids really enjoyed this side of the room.

Overall, I'm glad my buddy invited us over to North Wall Rock Climbing Gym as it gave us an activity to do inside and quite frankly it was just fun. It's an easy going gym and kids can just climb and have fun and hang out. I'll be taking my kids here more often now that I know that this place exists!

Deserving of praise beyond the five-star rating. Staff is great, the place is super clean, and pricing is cheaper than average. Excellent spot for both beginners and experienced climbers.

North Wall has incredible hold variety and top-notch setting. Grades are hard, but seem more honest in comparison to outdoor grades than most gyms. There's a huge number of problems set across multiple wall types (slab, vertical, numerous overhangs, arete, two cave rooms, a kilter board, a symmetrical spray wall, like 5 autobelays with some sweet routes, plus whatever I'm forgetting), new problems are set often, and there's a solid workout room in the back. My only complaint is that they've set my expectations too high - I have yet to be genuinely impressed by another gym after starting here.

There's also a huge, super friendly golden retriever there sometimes, so that's cool.

What an awesome gym! I live in Colorado and climb outdoors regularly. This gym is the closest to outdoor setting and problem solving that I've gotten indoors, even counting the gyms that I frequent near my home!

The gym was an utter disappointment. Top roping consisted of 3 auto belays with short walls and 3 manual ropes all with very confusing paths. Holds are of all different colors with the paths mapped out by colored tape that in many cases had came off or rolled up not viewable while climbing. My bouldering experience was very much the same. Probably okay however for a kids birthday party, but not for the serious learner.

Oh man! North Wall Climbing Gym totally exceeded my expectations! I was in the chicagoland area and wanted to climb a bit, so I looked for the closest gym I could find and had such a pleasant surprise. The staff was SO friendly and really helped me out when I needed it. Adam was working during my time their. As for the climbing itself, it is a great place to boulder! The problems really get you thinking and will really prepare you for the world of outdoor bouldering. Definitely looking forward to revisiting.

This is a great gym. My wife and I had a beginner class with Spencer and the instruction was great. There was plenty of opportunity to practice the skills and the gym was in great shape. They have equipment rental if you don't own your own and the prices are reasonable. The day pass allows you to come and go which is nice as well.
