Walked 20 minutes in hopes to use the free day pass that is advertised on the planet fitness website. I attend LVAC and was considering switching gyms since I live closer to here. April was annoyed and argumentative right off the bat when I inquired about using the free day pass, while stating they did not offer that. The website says “download the app OR visit one of our stores,” and she argued I needed the app for the offer, then said actually, I only need the app to see that their location doesn’t offer it… Okay, whatever. Technically it says “participating” locations, so fine. I asked what other options there were to try out the gym in that case, and she said to go to Belmont and Pulaski. It wasn’t until I asked specifically that she offered info about paying $20 for a day pass, which she clearly did not want to offer me. Suffice to say, I no longer have any interest in being a member here and clearly they don’t need the business.

When I first started working out at this particular PF I didn’t necessarily mind the visible wear and tear on machines, the outdated equipment (including tanning), and overall “well loved” facilities. I thought. “Maybe this is just what I should expect for the cheap monthly membership.”
However, I recently worked out at a PF out of state and I realized just how badly overdue this Chicago location is for a complete overhaul. Comparatively speaking, this Chicago location doesn’t have enough of the most popular weight machines, the machines themselves are visibly worn, the weights/resistance feel completely different from newer equipment at other locations (makes me wonder if any of my workout tracking is accurate now), the floor mat is bubbling up in spots over by the free weights, the tanning beds/booths are outdated, and the tanning rooms leave much to be desired. The individual workout mats in the functional training space would be an easy update but even those have been overlooked.
Knowing what I’m missing has me considering buying a membership at another fitness club for about 5xs the monthly cost.
The only reason this is not a one star review is bc the staff are wonderful.
Ownership should be planning a massive update if they aren’t already.

In about 16 visits going into the room I call the circuit room and then going to do the butt machine. My entire body has transformed in a short period of time which is totally encouraging to me so I can’t wait for the next time 16 times

I visited the Planet Fitness on Broadway in Chicago and had a great overall experience. While the facility could have been cleaner and more up to date - I’ve been to some really nice Planet Fitnesses and so being in a big happening city like Chicago, I was kind of expecting a nicer more up to date facility. The standout was the exceptional customer service. Joseph at the front desk was incredibly helpful and attentive, ensuring we got sorted with our day passes and had access to all the amenities, like the massage chairs. I definitely appreciated the warm and professional attitude, making the visit enjoyable despite the facility’s shortcomings.

EDIT: After having no AC for several days in August, I was ready to quit right then. It is now October and the gym has been without internet for multiple days in a row. The staff claims to be locked out of the router and is zero help. They gave me the gym's phone number to call (except that they are literally the same staff to pick up the phone when I call.)
Equipment got replaced over winter break. The new stuff isn't maintained regularly and is wobbly. The staff said,"Well, I can put a piece of paper towel under it and you can try to see if that works to fix it."

The new cardio machines have no more than six inches of clearance on each side, with some being closer to 4 inches. This doesn't even follow the Matrix brand recommendations on the website. The manager says this is out of his hands and was a corporate decision. I suspect it's to get people to want the black card to go to other locations.

I went in and they were out of paper towel entirely. How am I supposed to clean a machine without paper towel? Come on PF! Get it together!

I was a member here for a year. A few days before my annual fee was due, I went in to cancel and was told by a staff member that if I paid the $58 early cancellation fee, I would not be charged the annual fee. I confirmed this with her twice before proceeding.

Later, I saw both the $58 and the $48 annual fee were charged. I went back, and the same staff member said she didn’t know I’d still be charged. She left a note for the manager — no response. I followed up multiple times via email and phone. Eventually spoke to the manager, who promised to look into it and get back to me — never did.

No accountability. Poor communication. Completely misled and overcharged. Would not recommend this location.

Ruthless and brutal atmosphere.
I called yesterday and the lady was very soft-spoken on the phone and I kept asking her to repeat herself or how much it would cost for a one-day pass and she kept telling me $5 and I said that's incredible I can't believe it's only $5 so I just walked for a mile in the rain to come to this Jim excited to work out as I'm only in town today and then I was told it was $20. I told the lady at the desk that I was informed differently and she said she was the only one there when I asked if I could speak to a manager. She was the only employee on site and then she said let me go talk to somebody. Amazing how suddenly she went from being the only person on site to be in the co-worker who spoke with me on the phone yesterday who said that that was for people who have a membership at another club. And the woman is claiming that I said that I had a membership at another club. I would have no proof that I have a membership at another club and I said I'd like to speak to that lady but she wasn't available and then I said well why did you tell me you're the only one here. She asked me to leave. She said I was being disrespectful I said I'm not being disrespectful I'm asserting myself because I just want to speak to the other employee that mysteriously happen to appear
And then she threw me out. Here is what you don't know . I don't fit their mold although they proclaim that they don't judge but they do because I'm a 68-year-old man and I look very unwell. I have brain cancer and I am in town to see a physician to see if there's anything they can do to help me . $20 is not a lot of money but it is when you have cancer and you're trying to afford flights halfway across the country to get treatment. My hair is falling out because of chemotherapy and I have a huge scar clear across the right side of my forehead from brain surgery so I don't fit the mold of the beautiful bronze muscular tan guy that they want in their gym. The woman told me not to be angry with her and I said I'm not angry with you I'm angry with this whole entire situation and I had the right to be angry and then she said she was going to call the cops. I was not screaming I was not yelling and I was not using profanity. I used the word hell one time. I am accusing you directly intentionally of ageism and discrimination and I will further this up with your corporate offices. I am from New England and I was a member of the very very first planet Fitness in Dover New Hampshire when they opened 32 years ago. This club clearly does not implement the fantastic sons of welcome and mandates that this company founded originally

I was a member at this gym for years, and it's rough. I can't remember a necessarily good experience either which is not great when you are trying to form good exercise habits. This gym is insanely busy most of the time. Can confirm with other reviews - the crowd meter is incorrect. I complained about how busy it was and management said I should check the crowd meter (which is wrong), and when I said it was wrong, they basically said "sorry you feel that way." The floors and locker rooms are typically dirty. There are not enough machines for members even when the crowd meter doesn't say it's a peak time. If you have exercises you want to do, it can feel like hustling to get access to the equipment. As a result, other members weightlifting can be rude to each other. The staff mostly seem like they would prefer to be somewhere else. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was yesterday I went in - it was 86 degrees outside, and the AC was off... It was cooler outside than it was in this gym. The bargain of the $10/month is not worth it. I had another friend who had a terrible customer service experience trying to cancel his membership (note: you can cancel online with your online account and it's pretty easy from my experience), but I hate that poor customer service caused my friend so much stress.

I've been coming here for years, and it’s disheartening to see how far the service has fallen. Basic amenities like cleaning supplies and working water stations are more common than not. When I asked where to refill my bottle, I was told the only option was to buy water—no courtesy bottle, no contingency plan. That response alone speaks volumes about how little consideration is given to guests' wellbeing.

It’s hard to ignore the signs of a management approach focused on profit with minimal investment in the fundamentals that actually matter. It wasn’t always like this, but it’s clear the priorities have shifted, and not in a good way.

Love it so much that I recently made it my new home location. It's smaller than other locations, but it's clean and spacious and friendly. My only complaint is that the lights hanging from the ceiling burn my head and heat up my space and myself so much that sometimes I have to stop my workout. It's regrettable that they haven't sustained an exclusive area for black card members or acquired new equipment. The existing massage chairs are notably outdated compared to superior options found elsewhere, and the removal of the couch without any substitute seating has further diminished the comfort of the space..

I have frequented this location for several years now — 3-4 years at maximum. I have seen the good — the bad — and everything in between at this location. Out of service machines. Clipped lockers. Out of commission showers. These are typical conditions at most gyms — my prior experience included LA Fitness, XSport Fitness, and CFC. Overall, this gym is clean, usable and well staffed with amicable staff to greet you. One potential improvement: clean your windows. Let’s repeat: clean your windows. Your staff is competent to keep the gym area moderately kept — why the overlap and not address the windows looking out?

Worst place to ever visit! I recently relocated from Chicago to Kansas City, I had to come back to Chicago for personal reasons. I walked in about 20 minutes ago to take a shower and use the gym when I was greeted by this big goofball who was on his phone I asked politely can you please help me enroll my girlfriend in the system as a guest and it was like I asked him for the world! He was extremely disrespectful he said well I can’t do it so just go use the restroom AND MAKE IT QUICK. WOW! I couldn’t believe it I said “would you like to go to a restaurant you pay to eat at and them tell you eat and make it quick “ he immediately shrug his shoulders and said to me ma'am please leave your attitude is making me feel unsafe, mind you this is a big short man with allot of muscle and I’m short too but nowhere in the shape he is in. Another guy comes in from the back and big man (tayvon Carrol) tells this guy that I cursed at him and and made him feel in danger…all because he didn’t want to do his job. Come on! I confronted him asked what curse words did I say to you? And he said ma’am I’m sorry I never said that to you I don’t know what you’re talking about. Another gentleman walks in and tayvon greets him with such respect it makes me and my girlfriend feel even worse… this guy I guess picks who deserves and and who doesn’t deserve respect. He should be suspended I won’t say fired because we are in tuff times but have some respect for costumers!

It’s planet fitness, you get what you pay for. Good enough for getting a good lift in, although some of the machines really suck (esp the chest press and ab crunch machines). Certainly better than nothing, but I wish PF invested in halfway decent machines given the dearth of barbells and such. The lack of a real bench press also isn’t great.

I cancelled my membership in person (as required) in April of 2024 and they continued charging me monthly dues. When I called about the discrepancy they were very defensive and combative. I left this gym from being a Black card holder with little to no perks and downgraded to a regular membership, once I saw how the gym was run. The front desk was very unfriendly upon entry, the massage chairs, equipment and restrooms, locker rooms unsanitary. I never saw anyone wiping down equipment and having other members wipe down equipment after use was not encouraged or enforced. After cancelling my membership in person they continued to charge my bank and now deny I cancelled at all, altho I have the date on which I cancelled. I am having to contact my bank as these charges are fraudulent. This gym is very unsanitary and it's employees and staff either not available or completely rude. I do not recommend this gym either as it is not a safe space to workout.

The Planet Fitness on N. Broadway Ave., in my opinion, is the best Planet Fitness that I’ve been to. Machines and equipment is constantly cleaned. Trash is regularly emptied. Disinfecting spray and paper is constantly restocked. Locker/bathroom is well maintained and clean. The workers at this location put effort into maintaining the facility and it shows. The workers are also the friendliest and most inviting, always welcoming guests with a smile and greeting. They create such an inclusive and enjoyable experience.

I had cancelled my membership back during the pandemic/ post pandemic and of course it turns out the person i spoke to never officially cancelled my membership…just found out they’re still charging me. I typically do not take the time to compose negative reviews, but in the case of PFHalsted, I'll make an exception. I am NOT a complainer and I am at this facility 2-4 days a week, but over the last few months, I have to agree with the recent comments about equipment breakdowns that take forever to fix, periodically no hot water, faulty shower valves and no attention to timely maintenance. When a machine goes down, it’s down for an extended period. Today, one of only 2 leg press machines is down and based on past experience, probably will be for a while. There is not a single person (I’ve studied it) at the gym even when it's crowded, that does not wear their own headsets, headphones or or earbuds, thereby making it unnecessary for PF to supply super loud and annoying overhead music. Did I mention it’s also annoying? Better PF should concentrate on supplying consistent hot water. The 2 shower repairs took weeks to complete and there are only 3 showers. 3 days ago there was only one urinal out of service. Today there are 2 out of service, leaving only one remaining. One toilet?! At the gym?! Yesterday there was trouble with the Internet, today there is no Internet. One final thought…during Covid, gym members were asked to clean the machines for the health and safety of everyone, and everyone pitched in to get through that time. By any measure, that virus is clearly more under control now, but the practice of having members still doing routine cleaning maintenance on the machines means that the members are now permanently a part of the maintenance crew. And finally, the staff is friendly and tries hard, but Planet Fitness Halsted is lettin’ them down. Doesn't seem right.

I have nothing but good things to say about the Planet Fitness facility where I work out. The equipment is clean and well-maintained, and the staff is courteous, friendly, and knowledgeable.

I read one review in which the customer complained about old equipment. From my perspective, if it's heavy and you're at the gym to work out, quit complaining, lift the weight, and get on with your life. Whiners never win, and winners never whine.

The membership fee is low, and you get a lot for the price. The premium membership, also low cost, allows for tanning, red light therapy, and a variety of water massage tables and chairs. The benefits of the premium membership minimally exceed the price of the basic membership. Planet Fitness is a winner- Joe LeSanche, a satisfied customer.

I work out at 4 to 5 different Planet Fitness locations in Chicago during a given month, and this location is by far my least favorite (which is a shame because it's also the closest to where I live). There are too few treadmills when compared to the high demand of people that want to use them at any given time. Meanwhile, there are too many ellipticals and bicycles. It would lead to situations that I see frequently where there are 3-4 people waiting to use a treadmill while a handful of other cardio equipment is left vacant. Furthermore, the men's locker room is always in a poor state. The showers there always have problems (either there would be no hot water or the shower valve is broken) and there is ONLY ONE toilet for men to use in the ENTIRE building (which is absurd)! In my opinion, the managers of this location need to either increase space by renting the floor above them or adjust their facilities to meet the demands of the members that regularly go there.

Of all the PF locations that I go to, this one is beyond the most frustrating. It's busy and obviously that comes with its challenges, but I don't understand some of the choices the management at this location makes. Just recently, all the cardio machines were replaced with new machines (cool) but then they reduced the overall number without offsetting anything else. Why?? Now there's a ton of empty space in the middle of the floor, and oh by the way, all the treadmills are FULL all the time, and people are fighting over one of the THREE smith machines, which are very in-demand, and other lifting machines are constantly broken. If the changes they implemented actually made any sense and addressed the high volume of people, I'd revise my review but it seems like they're constantly going in the wrong direction. Make it make sense.

I quit this gym the other day because I am going to another. On my cancellationg they wrote that I was too busy.

My reason for wuitting is this gym is filled with people 24/7. All looking at their phone, literally 0 working out. I shouldnt have to ask 10 people to work in for one to say yes.

Dont call me again either. The gym is overcrowded at normal people times. If you like not working out, this is the spot for you. I have been a loyal member at Planet Fitness on 3636 N Broadway, but my recent experience has left me deeply disappointed. On October 10, 2024, I was confronted by the club manager, Zach D., and staff member Steve B., who accused me of employee harassment and sexual harassment, claiming to have footage as evidence. This confrontation escalated unnecessarily, leading them to involve the police, which resulted in a humiliating and public ordeal.
Following this, I reached out to clarify why I was BANNED for life. During the call, Zach D. was repeatedly rude, hung up on me multiple times, and used prejudiced language. I later discovered that actions had been taken on my account without my consent, including the signing of a cancellation form. I had to re-add my account and check other locations to confirm the ban.
Zach D.’s behavior has been the primary cause of this distressing experience, reflecting a lack of professionalism, integrity, and respect. As a result, I am now pursuing legal action to protect my rights. I have always held Planet Fitness in high regard and expected much better from this location.

Excellent gym. So many good things to share I don’t know where to begin. Huge parking lot, big plus! Walk in the door and the staff greets you and by name-wow! Table in the front has spray bottles to use while you workout. In the days of Covid this is much appreciated. The equipment is well maintained, in good working order. The club is exceptionally clean, staff is always present on the floor. Another huge plus! Massage equipment is a great way to finish your workout. Staff is super nice! Fine selection of machines, everything you’ll need. Great location (10 minute walk from Addison Red line station or right in front of the 36 north).

But biggest downside is the size! Hardly any room to work out. Machines super cramped.

I used to think this is just the way Planet Fitness is, because it's cheap. No, Other branches are much better. This one is just bad. Too cramped, a lot of floor space wasted on machines no one uses, it's filthy, the staff are friendly but rarely do rounds on the floor, and the air conditioning barely runs. It's literally a hot mess.

Unfortunately, my son refuses to go to planet fitness because he's an ATHLETE, and he says they don't have the weights he needs. I think that's wrong, because you have all sorts of weights available.

5/12/2024 update. They took away the all metal kettlebells. The actual competition grip kettlebells. Now why would you go and do that pf? As far as I’m concerned that’s not a promotion of all inclusivity but instead a promotion for utter weakness. Let your patrons have their options instead of taking them away. Ridiculous business model this branch runs by, it’s not even a laughing matter. Things seriously need to get better here.

It’s a 24/4 gym only 4 days of the week are operated for 24hrs (Mon-Thurs) on Fridays they close at 9pm and over the weekend they close at 7pm. They advertise inaccurately having signs up saying ‘24/5’

Edit in response to PF: this information IS from your most up-to-date info on the website as well as the club itself. It’s pretty clear cut that this is a 24/4 gym.

PROFESSIONAL THIEVES AT PLANET FITNESS. My wallet was stolen today and the pros tried to charge $900.00 on my cards in 20 minutes.The staff has known for some time that there has been a serious uptick in crime in the locker rooms. They are grossly negligent in letting members know this. They send out USELESS email blasts that are self serving instead of letting us know to be especially careful, diligent and aware of this serious crime situation. Someone could get hurt walking in while a thief is stealing as well!! Use precaution when signing up with Planet Fitness.

Too many people to be productive. Tons of cardio machines but lacking in other equipment. Difficult to find machines which are available, easy to find people sitting on machines while just playing on their phones.

I am an out of shape actor who has to get back in shape for two movie projects. Both casting directors asked if I could lose some weight for my roles. I was looking for a gym where I felt comfortable with being out of shape while getting back into shape. I found a home at Planet Fitness. The staff is great and the members are in their zone while working out. So you don't have to worry about any disapproving looks.

Since they are the cheapest in the area they get away with it but good lord this is the worst gym i’ve ever been to. Way too small for how many members go here. Machine selection is horrible, this is every planet fitness but I still want to complain about not having barbells. I could rant for an hour about it. Not only is it planet fitness but it’s the worst planet fitness i’ve ever seen.

Haven't even gone yet, and it's already a superior experience after just one phone call. I was paying $40/month at x-sport. Atrocious service, after being lied to from their mangers and staff and ran around in circles, I finally had enough and cancelled last Monday. I enrolled in planet fitness...which is MORE than reasonable for a gym membership and the woman who answered the phone couldn't have been more kind. At X-sport you ask a question and you immediately feel like you are impeeding on their staff's time (at work!) Not the case here, DeLysa was super knowledgeable, so friendly and welcoming and she remembered all of my preferences on the first run. Impressive! Ask for her! Thank you Delysa for your service and friendliness, it made the world of difference!

If you've been considering joining a fitness center, I recommend Planet Fitness. The club is always clean, and the price is great. I have the Black Card (it's $25/month) which allows me to use the spa features (body enhancement, tanning beds, massage chairs and hydromassage beds), bring a friend at any time, and use every other planet fitness location I wish. I also love the staff at my home club. They always empower the members upon entering the facility and as they leave. It is truly the best place to work out.

The bottom line is that this Planet Fitness is large, clean, convenient, friendly, and delivers excellent value for its price. I live in the neighborhood and have been a member since opening without any regrets. That doesn’t mean it’s perfect, however – read on if you’re picky and require more details.

The list of this location's minor foibles includes:
- The locker room is tiny and poorly laid out, so storing your stuff and changing can be a challenge.
- The men’s bathroom has one stall and two urinals with plumbing so poor that showers/sinks stop when the toilet is flushed, and everything backs up in a strong rainstorm.
- There is a SINGLE water station (serving one person at a time) for a 20,000 sq.ft. gym – crazy!
- Despite massive space (for an urban location), it’s not distributed optimally: too few free weights and popular strength machines, too much area given to programs/devices rarely used. The big room dedicated to trademarked Express Circuit workout often sits empty while you practically need reservations to access the sole fly machine.

For me there are two major problems – one Planet Fitness’ fault, the other not really.

1) THE LOUD MUSIC. Every customer has their own earbuds, so employees are the only ones listening to the piped-in music…and because there are no speakers at the front desk, workers have to CRANK the tunes on the floor to hear them up front. This, in turn, leads us to crank up our earbuds in a futile attempt to drown out the music. Please set a limit on the maximum volume and give the workers a speaker at the desk.

2) Casual Clientele. One can’t expect a hardcore environment at a $10/month gym. PF’s ethos is also non-judgmental. I get it. However, combining the indifference of the average client with the lack of sufficient machines can lead to a frustrating workout. Between 40-second sets, many sit on the machines watching 5-minutes of YouTube, answering a few texts chats, playing a hand of online poker, and placing a quick phone call (while you wait your turn). Perhaps that’s now the norm everywhere.

Again, overall, this is a welcoming, affordable, clean, convenient gym that I’m very happy and lucky to have in the hood…but there are certain issues that might drive some crazy. Luckily, the lack of contracts mean that you can see for yourself. 👍

Downside - it's always busy and it's kind of small (but it's a great gym for beginners). Upside - the staff is super nice and keeps the gym super clean. No kidding - the walk around with dusters cleaning equipment. Overall, it's a great gym with basic equipment for beginners. It is also a great place for gym veterans, because if you know what you are doing, you can get an awesome workout even with beginner equipment 💗

The staff is great and does an amazing job keeping the gym clean!
My only complaint is the lack of stairmasters. Stairmasters are one of the most popular machines and this location only has 3. There has been a few times when 1 was out of order. Often, you have to wait for the stairmaster.

This PF is always busy which means they are making enough money to invest into more stairmasters. I’ve been to PFs with 8-10 due to its popularity.

Update note to the owner: you’re the owner and have the power to order more equipment. The staff does not have control over your budget.

Male staff members cleaning the female lockers continuously “forget” to utilize the sign that alerts female customers before they enter the locker room that a male is inside. First, let me say how genuinely friendly the staff is at the location I frequent (Broadway near Addison in Chicago), especially the facility manager, Steve.There is an abundance of first rate equipment always available, with the staff constantly ensuring that the equipment and general facility is clean and safe. I have been a member there for several years, and look forward to my workouts.
