I had a very disappointing experience at the state st Planet Fitness branch today, primarily due to the lack of professionalism and courtesy from the staff and management.
Upon my initial arrival, an employee checked me in. Shortly after, I stepped out briefly to retrieve my water bottle and was checked in a second time by the same employee for a massage chair session, showing multiple interactions where my presence was clearly noted.
Later, I walked back into the facility to use the restroom, assuming there was no need for a third check-in given the previous interactions and short time frame. To my surprise, the employee rudely questioned if I had checked in. When I pointed out our numerous prior interactions, the employee's attitude remained consistently unprofessional. The facility was busy
Furthermore, when the manager on duty (a Black manager) was involved, they also displayed an off-putting, sarcastic demeanor. The entire experience suggests a significant lack of professionalism and basic customer service skills among the team at this location. A gym that promotes a "judgment free zone" should ensure its staff embodies those values.
I hope management addresses these serious customer service issues.

This is a great place to start a workout program without feeling intimidated. The massage options are great, especially for beginners that need some muscle relief. If I were to add a suggestion, it would be to offer a training session on the equipment. I am new to working out and it can be a little intimidating to approach new equipment without knowing how to use it.

Friendly staff and clean environment. Almost always a machine available for what you want, many of the same machines to allow this which is super nice. Set up is great and creates a good environment. Tanning beds and massage beds are easy access when you have the black card and is definitely worth the upgrade.

Smells like raw sewage when entering the facility , staff just says “it’s been like that for awhile now”
Tried a guest pass under a buddies membership (I paid for) and it always ends with an argument with the staff every time we enter the facility even though I’ve been coming here everyday the past two weeks.

Super friendly staff! Matt and David in the morning always make me feel welcome :) Sada & Lorrissa are so sweet and helpful in evenings! The black card spa is one of my favorite places after a workout and an awesome perk, the gym is clean and equipment is well maintained. I highly recommend if looking for a nice place to workout:)

I love PF, been a member since they came to Rockford, I like the different location, cleanliness at S Alpine is tops and State St is great too, however the smell at State St is over bearing. There is a broken sewage pipe or something. Hopefully it will be addressed some day. Other than that, top tier staff at each of the PF locations that I go too!

The smell in this gym is HORRIBLE now!! I’ve been coming to this gym for 2 years and it’s getting worse. I thought maybe it was bad mop water but now it obviously isn’t.I’m reconsidering going to a different gym at this point. I’m sure it’s not the staff at the desks fault either so going to them probably won’t help. Feel bad for your staff as well.

They had 4 stars but I went to 3 because the Perryville loction(which was my favorite one) always has a funky smell because of their septic or whatever it is. PLZ FIX THAT SMELL!! I think $15 general gym membership or $25 for gym, tanning and massage chairs isn’t bad. The staff are helpful and nice for the most part. Only thing I wish was if we’re paying for $25 maybe our drinks should be 75% off or free at least one drink a visit. How do I find applications for this place??

It's too expensive for the Black Card, $27.50 a month plus $49 a year, that's $379 total yearly! Plus, it didn't have a pool for aquatic therapy. Now, I'll try Peak Fitness and Crunch Fitness for a comparison. But Peak might win. It has a Pool!

The equipment is great, well maintained, and the gym is spacious. However, there is a nauseating smell throughout the entire gym. Maybe there’s a sewer gas leak? A posted sign about the issue would have been nice so clients know it’s temporary (if it is?). The equipment and variety and amount was really good to see - nicely done. Hopefully the smell is fixed soon.

Smells! Today the place smelled like sewer gas, and this wasn't the first time. Do you have an exhaust fan pulling air out of the building? If so, check all floor drains to make sure the traps have water and is not letting gasses inside.

I really appreciate ALL the team members and shift managers at my planet fitness facility, they always make my experience while working out much more enjoyable, I appreciate Jay for reaching out and following up with me about my review. One suggestion I mentioned would be great to add more smith machines or a hip thrust machine, or I also been curious if planet at my location would bring in a hack squat machine that’s would be awesome to expand the equipment equally, as a whole it’s helpful to consider we really don’t need that many cardio machines ex. Elliptical, bicycles and or treadmills most of the time smith machines are always full whether I get there early enough it’s always full and busy. Otherwise this location has the best atmosphere and team there is I appreciate everyone here working hard to make our experience working out much more enjoyable.

I am giving this place a 3 star because it is clean, the equipment is new and there is a lot of variety.
When it comes to consistency with the “black card” I wish I could rate it -5.
Certain employees (Matt) for sure pick and choose who they want to enforce the rules with. If the rules are going to be enforced make sure it’s for everyone and not just Black people. Everyday I observe husband and wives, boyfriend/girlfriend using the spa together and even young adults using the massage chairs and beds. Is it possible for everyone in the family to have a black card, sure, but do they??? But they get to lay out without any issue. But when come with my husband it’s now “rule time”.
And let’s not talk about the music, everyone doesn’t listen to heavy metal. Other people frequent this establishment and mindfulness’s for music that aligns with your population would be more appropriate.

As the “owner” you should know Matt is the manager so he is fully aware of my thoughts on his behavior and the cherry picking he is fostering. Please do not pretend to care because I posted my experience. True leadership is enacted when the courage to do something about the environment your staff is creating is fostered. Rules create order and consistency is key.

My mom called to cancel my dad's membership. My dad had passed away the week prior. The employee kept talking over my mom even after she explained 3 times my dad had passed away. Then proceeded to tell her he had to come himself to cancel. We called the Alpine location. Very nice and caring. I have half a mind to bring my dad's ashes to see this jerk and see if that is good enough. I can't believe it!

I am in town for work and my hotel gym was too small and this planet fitness was super close. The guy at the front desk today working the early early shift at like 5am (sorry I should have grabbed your name), was very hospitable. Even an employee who worked there that was off shift was very kind and welcoming. So thank you for making my time at the gym a great experience. Even though I looked so tired. Haha. Great gym! I’m really disappointed with this Planet Fitness location. The employees are constantly on their phones, which makes it clear they’re not paying attention to the gym or members. It's frustrating when you need assistance, and no one is available. On top of that, when I tried to use the tanning beds, the staff kept rushing me and cutting my session short, I should be allowed to tan for the full 7 minutes but this employee didn’t allow me to and only allowed me to tan for 5 minutes. I've been to other Planet Fitness gyms where you get the full allotted time. It's frustrating that the employees are more focused on their phones than on ensuring a good experience for members. Definitely not coming back

I had a terrible experience at this Planet Fitness location. The employee on shift was unprofessional and had an inappropriate attitude towards members. Instead of providing helpful assistance, they spent more time flirting with people than focusing on their job. It's uncomfortable and disrespectful, and it made the entire gym experience unpleasant.
