Spent 4 months with a personal trainer to gain muscle and also get into powerlifting. The gym has great energy, is incredibly diverse, and the personal trainers know what they’re doing. Lots of newbies start and stick on for long periods of time. I’m 32 and have never been this strong in life. Thanks to Juliya (my trainer) and the entire Rockwell Barbell team that maintain a great vibe all around.

Absolutely love this place. Plenty of equipment to choose from and you never have to wait on other gym-goers. Whether you're into strongman, power lifting, bodybuilding, or just starting out, this gym can definitely meet your needs. They have trainers available, martial arts classes, and I've never struggled to find a parking spot. Local gyms like these are just simply the best. I love supporting small business owners over mega corporate gyms — I just feel better about knowing where my money is going. The people are all super nice too :D. BONUS: Love swinging by Costco/Aldi on my way home :)

Rockwell is an excellent place! The owner and staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. They have a wide variety of bars, grips, cable attachments, chains, and kettlebells. If you forget your belt, they even have one you can use! I’ve been training for years and have always belonged to a commercial gym. However, I recently started coming to Rockwell and I’m amazed at how much I’ve missed. Wish I would have joined here years ago!

Clean facility with friendly patrons. Every kind of free weight setup you could ask for. 2-3 of each station from squat racks to benches.
Lots of respect too among other people at the gym, and friendly and helpful staff. Limited on cardio options but their focus is weightlifting and they excel here. Can’t recommend enough for all skill and strength levels! Rockwell rocks.

This gym has been a great fit for me. There’s a strong mix of equipment, including some unique machines you don’t usually see elsewhere, which keeps workouts interesting. It’s also really well set up for powerlifting, with everything you need and plenty of space. The trainers are knowledgeable and easy to approach, and the overall community is supportive without being overwhelming. One of the biggest advantages is the open schedule—being able to come in pretty much anytime makes it easy to stay consistent. Definitely a solid spot for anyone serious about training.

I have worked out at Rockwell for years and it is top of the line. Great atmosphere. The staff/trainers are knowledgeable and friendly. There are plenty of high quality combo racks and deadlift platforms so I never have to wait around. They have tons of specialized equipment for whatever your goals may be. Best gym I have ever used.

Rockwell Barbell is the only gym I've felt truly comfortable and encouraged in. Everyone is so kind and supportive. The space is amazing; they have every kind of equipment, from big to small, you could need. I was looking to train with someone who could also incorporate some of my PT needs as I have certain injuries; they hooked me up with Becca Powers who has been fabulous. I have gained so much strength and worked on repairing my injuries. Becca's energy, knowledge and encouragement have really given me confidence to continue working out and to want to be part of this special community.

I joined this gym with some prior weightlifting experience but nothing serious. I did personal training with Kevin and my goal was to improve my technique and learn a wider range of exercises.
My experience at the gym was absolutely fantastic. The gym itself has a lot of quality equipment (combo racks, platforms, machines, etc.) that is properly maintained. There is also a massive selection of bars and cable attachments to add variety/specificity to your workouts if you want. I primarily went between 5-7pm and rarely, if ever, had to wait for a piece of equipment.
I would also highly recommend Kevin as a personal trainer. He tailored our sessions to be specific to my goals and after working with him, I am much more confident in my technique. I also have many more exercises in my "back pocket" and I'm able to apply what I've learned to any other gym I go to.
The only reason I don't go to this gym anymore is because I moved away, and even then, I still think about coming back despite how long it would take to get there and back. I would highly recommend this gym for people of all skill levels (even total beginners) that are interested in lifting weights - you won't regret it.

Rockwell Barbell has a wonderful vibe of dedicated people that pursue their personal goals, while looking out to help anyone that needs a hand with spotting or advice on how to use certain machines. The trainers there are always approachable and there is always a motivation factor in the room of support and respect for everyone. If it wasn’t for the fact that I recently moved, this gym would be my primary one. but I do intend to come back from time to time. Because once I discovered it, it’s hard to not want to come back and soak in the atmosphere again.

Family owned gym. Metal music. Unique wall art. Everyone is ripped and friendly. Dogs.
Look no further. This gym has it all - loads of equipment and machines, after work out beverages and even meals if you're short on time, and a variety of trainers to help you with your fitness goals.
I've personally been working with Diego who has been whipping me into shape immediately. As someone who is a chronic class taker - orange theory, Barry's, lagree pilates, body pump, etc., I've seen more immediate results training with Diego than taking these classes 4-5 times a week. I've been really enjoying the variety of workouts that he's been having me do - strength training, balance, plyometrics, etc. Whatever your goals are, the trainers at this gym will help you achieve them and more.
Naturally, the only photo I have associated with the gym is Greg the dog who is an angel. You might see him there so make sure to sign up and maybe you'll see Greg or one of the many other gym pups!

Highly recommend Rockwell! As someone who has lifted as an athlete and in Crossfit classes I was confident in my ability to use a barbell but was still a bit intimidated as it's been a few years. From the start, Lawrence, the owner, took the time to find out about why I wanted to join/understand my goals and gave a thorough walk through of the gym. He matched me with an incredible trainer, Adrienne, who did the same & made a training program that was flexible to what I was looking for & fit into my work schedule. She's always a text away if needed & takes the time to help if I have specific questions and we're both in the gym. On top of all of that, the gym is kept in meticulous condition! It's extremely clean & everything has its place so it's easy to find the equipment you need. Can't recommend enough, if you're feeling intimidated, don't be!

I’m very happy with my switch to this gym! Rockwell Barbell is designed for weightlifting and has a lot of great equipment for any lift you would want to do. While I mainly use a standard barbell, this gym has access to many different bars such as the football bar, safety squat bars, transformer bars, camber bars and a lot more I wouldn’t know how to use. There are several benches, squat racks, and dead list platforms, so it is not an issue to get on equipment and take your time on the equipment. They also have a lot of machines, so I have been able to perform all auxiliary lifts I have wanted to do at this gym and have even been inspired to add more based on what’s available. Additionally, the gym members and staff I have interacted with have all been very friendly, giving a community feel.
Their training staff is really good and is technique focused. I have been taking sessions with Pat which I recommend to any lifter that wants to increase strength or technique. He is almost academic in his delivery, focusing on the latest science for technique and progression in your program. My squat, bench, and deadlift form have improved significantly from my time with Pat. I feel way more confident moving up in weight without injury risk from his coaching.

I left the gym about a year ago after learning that there were members who were actively allowing sexual harassment and blatant acts of prejudice to slide. Equipment was consistently damaged or DIY’d back together.
The bathrooms have had blood, needles, and waste in them. The roofing is filled with mold and there is no central air. Why did I stay? These issues piled up over the course of years and there was no other space with similar resources in the area.

The energy was always high and always had machines or equipment available when I needed to use it.

I have been lifting weights for 15 years and Rockwell Barbell is my favorite gym I've ever used. They have every piece of lifting equipment you could need and are constantly maintaining and upgrading their gear. I've also been training with Diego for the last 4 months and I have nothing but positive things to say about him. He's attentive and knowledgeable and does a great job balancing pushing and supporting during training sessions. He's helped me work through some minor historic injuries I thought were permanent and he always keeps our training programs interesting.

My trainer Matt Blankenberger has also helped me get closer to my goals by being a fantastic, knowledgeable, motivational and entertaining person to work with.
They take creating a positive and inclusive environment seriously. All fitness levels and body types feel welcome, despite its reputation for attracting heavy lifters. I’ve never felt uncomfortable here as a generally confused & exasperated fitness newbie.

The best gym in Chicago. I joined Rockwell after feeling a little stagnant with my garage gym training and doing my own powerlifting programming. It was an awesome experience from the beginning. The gym has a great hardcore vibe but is still super-welcoming, and has every piece of specialized equipment you could want as a serious lifter. My performance has improved dramatically thanks to the environment and the coaching of Lawrence Scott. I’ve worked with many trainers before - he’s by far the best. So happy I found this gym. I'm in town for a few weeks periodically and need somewhere to drop in. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and helpful. Was able to work out that day after a bit of paperwork.
They have a ton of gear including a really nice IWF rated oly bar which was perfect for what I've been working on lately. There is just one station where oly lifts can be done with bumpers, but they do have one. No problems getting a squat rack or finding space to do dumbell rows, etc. Open space for mobility work is a little hard to come by. In regards to mobility work they did have all the balls, bands, foam rollers, etc you'd expect.
Music was at conversation volume which I massively appreciate. Whatever is playing may not be your thing, but easy to ignore or drown out with headphones as reasonable levels.
Good mix of people. Everyone was polite, aware of themselves in the space, while being in their own head space getting their work done. Easy to be comfortable.
This gym is definitely geared towards intermediate and up lifters. However beginners will have no problem with a bit of communication. Asking for a quick tour and some pointers on local gym etiquette would be all you need to have a good experience.

I visited Rockwell Barbell twice during my stay in Chicago. I needed powerlifting equipment and this place has everything I needed. Not only is the equipment in great condition, the gym it self is very clean and organized. The owner coordinated with me to accommodate my trip in as well which I really appreciated. If I lived in the area, this would absolutely be my home gym.

I have been using Rockwell Barbell last 12 years. Lawerence Scott is my trainer for all this time. I had multiple issues during this time such bypas surgery, two times rotator cuff surgery. During all my injuries, he worked with me and created new exercises to fit my handicap. I had been to other gyms, but this one is believably the best. In this gym people are friendly and help each other to achieve thier goals. Every one is very caring. Now I am 69 years old, Lawerence has worked with me for so many years. He is the best .

The gym has asbestos and holes in the floor that never get fixed. Bathrooms are always dirty, even with blood and urine on the floor. The owner forces women to lift in front of him if they want a membership. When I canceled my membership, I was still charged. I would leave zero stars if I could.

I was a member for nearly five years and have seen the quality of the space take a serious dip. There are holes in the flooring, mold in the banisters, and a seasonal insect issue. Sadly, repairs were typically DIY and only a bandaid. For the monthly dues, I expect a more sanitary and reliable facility.

I moved to Chicago in the middle of the pandemic, not knowing a soul. When gyms opened again, I knew I wanted to start competing and decided to check out Rockwell. Not only have I progressed in powerlifting tremendously, but I’ve also found a second home. I almost left Chicago, but the home at found at Rockwell was one of the main reasons I decided to stay. My coach, Patrick, is one of the most knowledgeable coaches there and will push you to your limit and it’s all worth it. I’ve been coming to Rockwell for 2.5 years. It’s been cool to see the gym continue to grow and offer new classes and amenities.
I work with a personal trainer, Liz, and her infectious positive attitude make intense workouts much better. She won’t go easy on you, but she’ll get you results. She offers a group class Sundays at 11am that is my favorite. Lifting with friends is more fun!
I’ve gained so much strength and done things I thought I couldn’t do. I have recomped and gained confidence, feeling stronger than ever. And I can’t recommend the friendly and diverse community at Rockwell more. Liz keeps her clients close-knit and we do dinners together every so often.

My favorite gym in the city. Good people, lots of great trainers, LGBTQIA+ welcoming. Barbell lifting focused (there's 1 each of rower/bike/tredmill/stairmaster/ski machine, but most folks seem to use them just for warmup/cooldowns). Members all generally meet with a trainer at least once per week: result is that it's supportive and beginner friendly (even though there are plently of advanced and elite level lifters as well) and everyone I see there is lifting correctly/safely. I went from a 750lb total to 1050lb total working with Tom.
In addition to the standard powerlifting gear, they have a bunch of great specialty bars. They also have calibrated plates for anyone that is training to compete, and periodically host competitions.

I've been lifting for more than a decade now and I can safely say that Rockwell is one of the best--if not the best--lifting gyms I have ever stepped into. The energy of the place is unmatched, and everyone there is incredibly generous and supportive towards each other no matter if you're there ready to rip a 500+ lb deadlift or if you're just getting started.
Katie in particular is an all around fantastic trainer. She is incredibly patient (as evidence by her hours literally holding my hand through very bad split squat form) and she knows exactly how to motivate you through those tough training sessions where all you want to do is give up and lay on the ground forever (but she'll somehow convince you that a few more sets is a good idea).
In all, if you want to get jacked, and have unmatched self confidence, Rockwell is your place. It is Chicago's best kept powerlifting secret. Run don't walk to this joint.

RWBB is an awesome community spot. They've got tons of accessory equipment to rig onto barbells and land mines. They’ve also got a bunch of speciality bars. It's powerlifting focused but there's a platform for olympic lifting work and a couple olympic barbells. If you're a serious body builder looking for a lot of specific machines this might not be the best main gym for you- but for functional fitness, oly lifting, and powerlifting there is plenty of room. The main olympic platform gets taken quickly but I've never had to wait too long to use anything. I wish there was another olympic platform, but I would definitely rather train here than pay $300 to lift at a crossfit gym with no character or fun specialty equipment!

Am I considering moving to Chicago for a gym? Yah, maybe. Rockwell is amazing. The members, staff and equipment are all top notch. I have never been to a gym with nicer humans and we do drop ins at a lot of gyms around the country. The members also clean up after themselves which makes Rockwell even better. $20 for a drop in may seem steep but you’re getting 4-6 combos, 5 deadlift platforms, a few squat racks, all the bars/speciality bars you could ask for and normal (non powerlifting) gym equipment.

Housed in a former laundromat near the river on Chicago's Northwest side, finding this gym after my move to Chicago was a huge blessing. Rockwell Barbell has ample equipment for powerlifters and bodybuilders alike--you don't even need to bring your own belt! The owners and trainers are knowledgable and friendly, the price is reasonable, and membership gets you 24-hour access to the space. Unlike other powerlifting gyms that look like dungeons, Rockwell is artfully decorated and has plenty of sunlight--meaning I don't mind that I spend half my waking hours here. Can't recommend this spot highly enough.

I have been at Rockwell for about a year, and it is by far the best gym I’ve been to.
This is the first barbell gym I’ve been a part of. As someone that lifted a while on my own, without a coach, I knew this was the place to go to get some guidance and work with real equipment (barbell selection, etc is incredible coming from someone that previously worked out exclusively in commercial gyms). I can never go back to lifting in a commercial gym after training here. Besides coaches/equipment, people respect each other and the equipment, which doesn’t happen in commercial gyms. As other reviewers said, there is a community and you can socialize if you want or just do your own thing. The sound system also slaps which is a huge plus.
I have worked with two coaches at Rockwell, Anthony and Lawrence, and can’t say enough good things about both of them. Marie is also great from the one session I did with her.
For those who are passionate about lifting, this is the place to be.

This is a great gym. Has all the equipment you need including multiple squat racks and an Olympic lifting platform. A great neighborhood barbell club with clientele from novices to serious lifters. I’ve found this a welcoming, unassuming place where folks can show up, be themselves, and lift.
I’ve been doing some personal training with Lawrence (the owner) and in a few short weeks he’s made incredible changes to my form, strength and balance. Lawrence has an amazing ability to notice and explain tiny things about form that add up over time to massive improvements. I’ve been training at Rockwell for about 6 months, and it’s been an amazing experience!! I have tried and failed to get myself into a fitness routine for many years, never really knowing where to begin. I arrived at Rockwell following a recommendation by my physical therapist after going through recovery for a shoulder injury and it's one of the best decisions I have made for my physical health. The atmosphere here can be described as a bunch of gentle spartans. Everyone here is very hard working, no-nonsense, mission-oriented and dedicated individuals. They all appear committed in fostering a community that is based on plurality, inclusivity and mutual support. My trainer Kelli Coleman is an extremely professional, knowledgeable and personable individual who has helped me navigate my shoulder recovery. Rockwell is mainly focused in strength training yet can fit all levels of skill and accommodate for other training modalities. I've been lucky enough to train at some really excellent gyms across the country, and Rockwell Barbell is definitely in the upper echelon. I won't reiterate the normal "this isn't your typical globo gym!" stuff since you probably know what you're looking for if you're reading this. There's lots of good equipment that ranges from typical powerlifting fare (safety squat bars, GHR, reverse hyper, etc) to more specialized things like sleds and strongman-leaning stuff like yokes and farmers walk handles. It's a tremendously inclusive environment as well, which may be Rockwell's biggest draw since unfortunately this isn't always a guarantee at strength gyms. Easily a top-tier strength gym in the Chicagoland area.
