Everything is wonderful in this location, but they need to prohibit people from entering the pool with the shoes they wear outside, as they bring dirt into the pool!

Such an excellent YMCA! We walked in for the first time and took a tour and immediately got annual passes for the whole family. They have something for everyone- excellent gym, a sauna, hot tub, workout classes, youth sports, and fun classes for kids, and a kid zone for infants to play with others.

Complete lack of communication from the employees, particularly the front desk staff and aquatics. We tried to sign up for swim lessons twice. The first time we were told the pool was closed and that we would be better off waiting a couple weeks so we didn't get charged for the time the pool was closed. Two weeks went by and we signed up for class again. We got charged for the previous weeks and showed up to a pool that was still closed.
No where on their website does it mention the pool being closed.
We will be looking elsewhere for swim lessons.

Pool/facility management is ridiculous.
Comp pool is closed for half-day due to lack of staffing. YMCA problem to solve, or make up to the impacted members. Zero communication on the issue.
Small pool is overcrowded with catering to “floaters” and kids.
One of the lifeguards yelled at for water coming out of my nose - told me to use paper towels.

Since Northwestern closed HealthBridge's 4 pools in December, 2023, it having been there since 1994, the Sage YMCA is very over crowded. I dread summer when day camp starts. It's like winning the lottery to get into water classes that seniors depend on.

1) The water filters here are trash. It tastes like you’re slurping out of a parking lot puddle. They never change the filters.

2) The locker rooms are hotter than the Sahara Desert. The ladies at the front desk seemed not to care.

3) Don’t get me started on the world class fireplace they used their grant money on, but kept the rickety locker rooms benches from 1986.

If this YMCA doesn’t get it’s act together then it’ll be YM-CYA for me 👋

The sense of community I feel here has helped to drive my transformation and I couldn't be more grateful for that alone. High-quality, clean, well-stocked weight/machine room - never saw a machine out for repair very long. Great pools, hot tub, sauna, steam room.

And half of the team even know me by name. That's nuts to me.

Highly, highly recommend.

My family joined Sage on 12/11, just three days before being automatically locked into paying for the next month's dues—something I’ve never experienced at any other fitness facility. Despite this short window, my family and I visited four times in the following week and a half to evaluate the facility.

During these visits, we noticed some concerning issues. The family pool had a strong smell of chloramines, which suggests either low chlorine levels or insufficient backwashing. (As someone with a Certified Pool Operator license, I’m familiar with these indicators.)Another time we came in and the pool was overfilled, so it wasn't "skimming" as intended, which also led me to notice that the shallow side skimmer drains are plugged and barely skimming at all. The steam room also clearly needed cleaning—it was excessively slippery, like the buildup you’d see on neglected aquarium glass, indicating it hadn’t been properly dried out or sanitized in some time.

We also attempted to use the gym, but every time we went, a fitness class was taking up an entire half of the space. While I understand class schedules are likely posted somewhere, reserving such a large portion of the gym during peak hours seems poorly planned and inconsiderate to general members.

Ultimately, my family and I realized Sage isn’t the right fit for us. However, when I went to cancel, I was told I’d still have to pay for another month because my request was made one week after the arbitrary “too bad” date—even though we only had three days to decide if we liked the facility.

This rigid policy and lack of flexibility show that Sage prioritizes collecting fees over ensuring client satisfaction. If they don’t address these concerns and improve member experiences, they risk losing more members over time, when the Y already has a limited demographic.

Childcare is great!! Front staff for the most part is great. As far as the rest of the staff, it is a hit or miss. I’ve had issues with the older lady Deb that works at the pool yelling at my kid on multiple occasions. He is supposed to be allowed to swim unsupervised since he passed the swim test but she only screams at him to get out of the pool when other members are allowed to free swim when there’s classes going on. He’s opted to stop using the pool all together because of this. She still works there and never apologized to him. They have peloton bikes that they’ve promoted but you can’t use the app on your own phone for strength workouts because not everyone has access to the app+ they’ve also promoted. You have to be connected to the bike to use this feature which is inconvenient stationed in the middle of the gym. I’ve been trying to get them to fix this since September but no one seems to care. I’ve contacted about 5 different people about the situation. I just keep getting the run around from different staff. The PT Samantha (i think that’s her name) was so rude she basically brushed me off and pretty much said it wasn’t her problem. Then gave me a number that couldn’t help me. All I am able to see on the app are the free classes. They say the family bathroom is for families or people with disabilities. I’ve seen grown men just hanging around so that rule isn’t enforced. One grown man in particular that absolutely doesn’t have kids. I’m convinced he uses the ymca as a social club.

Our family enjoys being at the sports club, and we couldn't be happier! One of our first impressions was how clean and well-maintained it is here. It's reassuring to see that the place where you spend your time is kept in such perfect order.

We attend the club together with our daughter, and for us, it's not just a way to stay fit, but also an important step in realizing her goals in the swimming pool. We appreciate the family-like atmosphere that prevails here. In the club, we feel like part of a large family, where everyone supports each other and strives to achieve their athletic goals.

However, sometimes the family pool gets crowded, especially during peak hours. We think it would be a great idea to organize circular movement on the swimming lanes to enhance the swimming experience and reduce overcrowding.

We are grateful to the sports club for the excellent service and the opportunity to engage in sports in such a wonderful atmosphere. We are confident that our family will continue to enjoy our time here and recommend the club to anyone looking for a great place to exercise and relax.

Nice clean gym, a little small but I got used to the size of Health Bridge in Crystal Lake. Although it is weird why Sage dumped a ton of money into this place years ago but apparently none of it went to updating the locker room. Good if you are over 18. Kids really can't do anything in the facility if between 8-18... Not good for families after kids turn 8. Used to be better with rock wall and other activities, but now they don't seem to want anyone between the ages of 8-18 unless you pay for swim, which requires separate payment AND a membership (rather than just a prorated amount for non-members). This was a great facility for when my kids were young and I could leave them in the daycare, but since I was divorced, I always wanted to be with them. So if that's what you want, you may have to keep looking for other family gym ideas... Sorry.

Nice facility with nice staff however a little greed going on with this outfit when I always thought YMCA was meant to bring a community together. I have a job that provides Cigna insurance with fitness direct which helps pay half of our monthly dues. A few months ago the staff decided to turn music on in the fitness and weight lifting area. But it is very loud, especially in the weight area. Complaints were made to staff who told us that management did not care, a letter to the editor fo the local newspaper was made because of a lack of response from the management and additional complaints continue to be made. Yet, Sage YMCA DOES NOT CARE! The music is so loud that even with headphones you can hear it and one can no longer listen to audiobooks. There is no good reason to play music on the PA. People that want to listen to music bring their own. It is just loud and disturbing. The ironic thing is that if a member were playing music they would be in violation of the loud music policy, but the staff exempts itself from a policy that it hold paying member to! Join another gym, Sage YMMCA does not care about you or your experience!

Great clean YMCA. More updated facility with a good variety of work out classes to attend. There’s something for everyone. I took one star off for less than friendly front desk staff and the inability to communicate with one another to fix a simple problem. I went in trying to get a membership card for my son because they forgot to assign one when I enrolled. Front seat ladies made like I was lying and had to find the paperwork to “verify” everything I was saying. They could find it, took 2 ppl over 10 minutes than when getting the card said we needed to take a picture. Waited for that as well only to find out it didn’t work. Got home and the membership card didn’t work as well! I understand things can happen but dealing with 2 to unpleasant ladies made it all the more challenging.

Update: arm pad replaced on bicep curl machine. Thank you!

Still a few drain flies in the shower area. Whatever you’re doing is working, but keep at it!

Cleaning protocols still not posted (to my knowledge).

Locker locks are confusing. It’s so easy to lock yourself out.

Saw teens goofing around while supposedly working out. One appeared to be under 16 without a wrist band. Better supervision May be needed in the workout area.

Would love if you would ban cellphones in the workout area. So many sitting on machines on their phones: not working out.

Original review: I like Sage YMCA! (There is no other Y in Chicagoland to match.)

First request: repair worn out pads on exercise equipment. I was told several weeks ago that this would be done soon. How long is "soon"?

Second request: Transparency on cleaning protocols. Suggestion: post the protocols on line and on bulletin boards. How often are the hot tub, pool, steam, and sauna deep cleaned? Locker rooms: how often are they deep cleaned? I brought to the attention of the front desk that the shower area had at least a dozen drain flies on the walls and flying around when I was there (just the shower I was using). He indicated that they were aware of the problem and that it had been reported to management. I would like to know that some mitigation effort will be taken within a few days, not weeks.

Is anyone reading these posts? I would love to see a response from management.

Thank you!

Went out of way to be unwelcoming to a child with autism who simply wanted to use the swimming pool. The staff insisted he must pass a test to use pool , a test that an autistic child cannot pass DUE TO THEIR DISABILITY that prevents them from following standard instructions!! Okay I was really confused this place looks amazing, fireplace lounge I mean OMG but the actual gym is lacking. it's just not a great use of space. My home gym in Chicago is older and "run down" but there's plenty of space to do what I need to do even if that means it's a mat tucked away in a corner somewhere. I just got out of surgery and I'm trying to stay on top of my PT, dropped in on this gym while visiting my sister in the suburbs. No offense to the guy shooting hoops but when the basketball court is also the track that's not a safe place for me to be doing what I need to do. They should have hired a better architect I guess.

My Grandson took swim lessons here horrible experience the check-in desk people didn’t know what was going on half the time had to always repeat 3-4 times spelling of his last name when I first signed him up wasn’t told what the protocol was that I’d have to give his name each time so they can look him up and then sign in also so bothersome front desk, staff always had to unlock family room door it was never consistent if it was locked or unlocked to get into the family area, one day there was a lot of blood on one of the benches by the lockers inside the family room plus more then a few times random men n older boys just walking around inside family room when they felt like it they weren’t with children either. not sure if they were repairmen or the teenage boys definitely were not and why were they in there Walking around with hoodies on in the warm weather?? Ongoing confusion with pool closures too the pool shut down for weeks at a time no communication about this either you just have to find everything out for yourself no bulletins no one telling you when you checked in should’ve been given a code to get into the family room door so you can do it yourself not have to be waiting for some lady to come and unlock it for you should’ve had bulletins posted somewhere on the walls inside the family room so many people sitting around doing nothing but chitchatting at the front desk for the price you pay it’s not very well run. Mostly the staff in the business offices were rude on & off did not want to be accountable for how horrible the place is run plus different instructors each time for the lessons some not really teaching properly One lady looked like she had make up on and didn’t want her hair to get wet?!! He can’t swim that much better than when he started what with all the gaps n closures to different instructors, never the same an confusion when everything was shut down. The showers are something to be desired. Cold water takes forever for it to warm up. The pool isn’t very heated Kiddos are always freezing when they get out of the water by grandson’s lips were blue. There isn’t much effort put into teaching kids to swim unless you’re doing private lessons or you’re older the prices aren’t reasonable for what you’re getting better off going to some of the other swim places around town where they actually care about your kids. I had one instructor my grandson had she was really interested in my grandson and helped him to learn but the other ones not so much and there was always a different one each time on Saturdays.

Excellent choice: 2 pools, sauna, steam room, family locker room, many classes included in monthly cost, lots of well maintained equipment.
Cleaning supplies readily available, Trainers, if needed, extra $. Friendly & helpful staff.

Very clean friendly staff nice facility. The weight room can use more free weights and less treadmills as the weights are always full and there are always plenty available of the 40 or treadmills. Also expanded hours would be nice but I imagine it's expensive to keep large facilities like that running and this is a ymca with families and not a small 24/7 weight room for experienced lifters. I will go there for as long as I live nearby and they do not require masks which don't do anything in the gym except put people in danger of not getting enough oxygen and potentially passing out.

I think the pool is closed more than it is open. Really frustrating when you have to keep re-adjusting your schedule to fit in a few laps before work. If the pool is even open.

The YMCA is a corner stone for a healthy community.

As long as you read the schedules call in ahead of time to make sure swimming pool is staffed and respect the fact the Y has classes that encourage community that might infringe on individual time at the amenities you will have an excellent experience!

The staff is top notch, the p demic has really hurt staff headcount and member enrollment as well as class offerings so please be patient.

The Y helps families of low income so it is much worth the membership.

Great weight room and yoga studio.

Excellent family and competition pool and also has good childcare as well.

Lockers are impossible to figure out. No clear directions on how to get to the pool from the men's locker room.

i was in the sauna “i’m 15”and the lifeguard came in all aggressive saying that i need to be 18. but the guy at the front desk said you have to be at least 13 years old. and i told her that and she got more mad and and kicked us out.

Worst customer service ever, they just want to take your money. Don’t care about the customer at all.
