Southport Fitness is the nicest gym I’ve ever been to. The atmosphere is focused and refreshingly free of distractions—no ads, no blaring TVs, and no one trying to upsell you protein shakes or classes every 20 feet like at Equinox. It’s a gym where you come in, get your workout done, and leave feeling great. The vibe is serious yet welcoming, and it feels like a true hidden gem. The owner is clearly passionate about fitness and wellness, and it really shows.
The gym is spotlessly clean. I usually work out in the mornings and always see a cleaner on-site for several hours. The one time I visited in the evening, there was a different cleaner doing the same. So when the owner says it might be one of the cleanest gyms in America, he’s not exaggerating. The equipment is top-tier, very well maintained, and there’s a wide variety—more than I even know how to use right now. I especially love the large stretching room, which has become a regular part of my routine.
I signed up for a set of sessions with one of the personal trainers, Max, who has been fantastic in our sessions so far. I’m looking forward to working with him to continue building my knowledge and form. Since joining Southport Fitness, I’ve made significant progress toward my fitness goals, and for that, I’m truly thankful.
If you come across older negative reviews, keep in mind those reflect a previous owner. The gym has since changed hands, and with that, the entire culture and quality have transformed. The current experience is exceptional—and I can’t recommend it enough. Honestly, with the level of investment in high-quality equipment and how low the membership price is, I don’t know how the owner even makes a profit. But I’m glad he’s doing it.

I love Southport Fitness! The gym is always clean, has great equipment, and never feels too crowded. It’s easy to get in, get your workout done, and feel good. The people are friendly, and the vibe is chill and welcoming.
Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a solid local gym!

I highly recommend this gym! First of all, this is one of the last truly 24/7 gyms in Chicago. Membership is super cheap (especially if you choose the year plan over the monthly) and of the 20+ gyms I've belonged to over the years, this is by far the best value. It's clean, the staff is helpful, personal trainers know their stuff, and it has all of the equipment I need. When I first joined, there was no belt squat, which is one of my favorites and so I sent an email to the owner and within weeks there was a shiny new belt squat machine ready to go. Awesome.

This gym is a true gem in Chicago! Not overly priced or crowded. The equipment is always in great condition and it is extremely clean! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I attribute the atmosphere and my experience to why I have been so consistent in the gym lately. I recommend this gym to everyone I meet! And they are super conveniently located which is a bonus!

Great Gym! Ive been coming here for a year, but I fell in love with their new deadlift room. At first I was scared to use it, but my membership came with a free consultation with a trainer and we used the hour to help with my form and now I see them twice a week!

Southport Fitness is a straight-up gem! The crew here knows how to get you moving, whether you're hittin' the weights or just tryin' to get in a solid cardio session. I dropped $40 for a day pass and jumped into a group class—definitely worth it. The trainers are super knowledgeable and the gym is spotless. Plus, it’s got a vibe that makes you wanna keep coming back. If you're lookin' for a no-nonsense gym with a local feel, this is the spot!

I hate to admit it, but I was wrong.
All my life I used to say, you do not need a gym membership. You need to have a physical, plentiful, active lifestyle and you'll be fine. What I really was saying was, I don't know how to work out and I need help to navigate all the weird gym equipment, sort out all those myths in my head and bring forth more reasonable, realistic goals that, not only fit my lifestyle, but are proactive in the mental game of gains; when it comes to setting aside time for working out and feeling accomplished with favorable results.
Joel was like a divine sent; placed in that gap for me to awaken to the reality and to feel energized to do this new thing called 'taking care of myself' by demystifying the working out aspect of it and showing me how good it is to shift gears mentally and enjoy a delicious drink of health and wellness in my life.
So, this how it happened. I took advantage of a promo and went in to check it out. Then, I scheduled a personal training session with Joel.
Since, I've been converted to adult and sober thoughts. I now think weights are cool and feeling healthy is achievable. I know that all those false ideas were thoughts of a defeatist that feared trying something and being doomed to failure. But in all fairness, I also didn't have the superfluous goals I associated with working out like losing weight and looking great, but I guess that was also within the defeatist mentality.
Look, you could find value in gym or not, but when you are more knowledgeable you can choose what's best for you. This experience of taking personal training sessions has inspired just that; reevaluate and re-educate myself on what it means for me to be healthy. Thank you, Joel.

Such a great gym with a convenient location right off the Southport brown line stop. You really can’t get much better for a gym open 24/7, especially with a reasonable price point. Multiple squat racks, benches, and a whole line of treadmills with machines throughout the space.

They let all men who identify as women into the women’s locker rooms.
I recently ended my membership with this gym after an incident in which I felt very unsafe. I had just worked out, and was changing in the women’s locker room alone, when a 6 foot 5, 300 lb man walked in. I felt scared and vulnerable.
When I let management know, they told me the man identified as female, and that going forward they will be letting all men who identity as female use the women’s facilities.
This is a safety issue, and since I cannot safely use the women’s locker room, I suspended my membership. I do not have an issue with transgender individuals. What I do have an issue with is feeling safe in spaces where I am vulnerable.

Owner is in review after review saying they have the 'easiest cancellation policy in the states' (they checked lol, ok) and that you just email and confirm and do what it says, but their website says, "Monthly billing of membership will continue until all the requirements for cancellation are met (1) Giving Southport Fitness 30 days written notice by certified or registered mail to Southport Fitness, Billing Department, 3415 N. Southport, Chicago, IL 60657, with the following enclosed: (2) a complete membership cancellation notice which can be picked up at our club (3) turning in my membership card (4) Giving full payment of any unpaid dues or indebtedness (5) Meeting the minimum monthly term of membership."
Don't listen to the owner's BS responses, they're obvious lies. Also claims they clean the gym more than any other gym in the US. lol ok. Outrageous pointless lies say a lot.
Edit: The owner is lying or doesn't know their own policies. You say you let people email to cancel but a bunch of people are in the reviews saying that didn't happen, and undeniably the contract you sign does not say you can email to cancel but that you have to do other things.
Also, hiring somebody to clean and pretending the only time other gyms clean is when they hire somebody as if their people don't clean at all is either extremely disingenuous or baby brained nonsense. Seemed like a fine gym but the owner clearly screams stay away at all costs. Anybody who says they do something more than every other gym in the country is clearly a deeply unserious person.

The ideal neighborhood gym in an awesome location! I've been a member here for several years and have witnessed tons of upgrades to the space. The membership fee is definitely fair for what you get. The gym ownership is very open to member feedback and continues to adapt the space to fit those needs.
There are always friendly staff members at the front desk. Thanks!

Southport Fitness is hands-down one of the best gyms I’ve ever been to! The 24/7 access is incredibly convenient, especially for someone with a hectic schedule. They have an impressive variety of equipment, but what really stands out are the punching bag and the push sled with turf – perfect for an intense and diverse workout. They even have the platforms and bump plates so I can deadlift!
The facility is spotless, which shows how much they prioritize cleanliness and creating a welcoming environment. The staff are not only friendly but also genuinely thoughtful and eager to help. Whether you're a beginner or a fitness enthusiast, Southport Fitness has everything you need for a great workout experience. Highly recommend!

I’ve been coming to this gym for about a year using ClassPass. I’ve seen the staff be rude to others, but it is a general gym with the right equipment to get the job done. Their process to sign in with ClassPass is you can only come in during staffed hours & sign in on the clipboard. I’ve been doing this for about a year & this has been their policy. This week, I come in & go to sign in but I’m stopped & aggressively asked to see my reservation. Off the bat, I’m caught off guard because no policy changes or anything is posted but I’m being questioned. I show my reservation & the guy says “You should thank me because I opened the door early so you’re welcome for that”. It was 3:58 pm& staffed hours start at 4pm, I happily have waited outside previous times where the door wasn’t open on time. But I brushed it off. He tells me they have a plan for ClassPass members to sign up for $35/month. I tell him thanks. I let him know their membership sign up online is misleading as it gives different prices in the membership & go about my workout. It shows $49.95 but everywhere else it says $59.95 so I refused to sign a contract online as I as going to prior before. I absolutely felt watched my workout as ClassPass gives you 120 minutes which is ample time. I leave thinking nothing of it because I don’t go over the time & also follow their process.
I go in today, Saturday 12/7, & there is nobody at the desk but, again, the policy is you sign in on the clipboard. I find the clipboard & go to sign in & a guys goes, “ClassPass, let me see your reservation” I go, I’ve been coming here for a year & this is the second time I’ve been asked & I’ve not been asked before. He cuts me off & is immediately rude saying it’s because it’s a different insurance policy. I go listen, your approach is rude & he cuts me off again telling me l don’t have to workout there. I go to explain the approach is rude which now I’m rude because ultimately I’ve not been asked the whole time for this request from anyone. He repeats to me how was he rude, “What, asking to see your reservation?” Then says, “We aren’t nice, we have to be firm because it’s a different insurance policy” when I restate he’s being rude. He then repeats you don’t have to workout here. I said so won’t & left.
Listen, you’re more than welcome to change your policy but you all have no customer service skills (accept the one young woman who works there & is extremely sweet). If you change your policy, something posted telling of the new policy would be better to retain people rather than counting on your rude staff to do it. Even put the policy on ClassPass yo make people aware before coming. I did not work out this day & won’t be returning. I’m glad of these experiences because I was going to sign up on the $35 deal the guy offered when I walked in that Saturday. Will not be spending my money here.
This is a great concept of a gym. It is clean, & they have great equipment. Your lack of customer service ruined the experience.
Edit: Lmao, they’re really going to the extreme on my review with their response? Who didn’t have a reservation? My photo below shows I did & I’ve been going to this gym for quite some time with reservations. Tread lightly on accusing people of theft. The below is not even how the convo went but go off. Escort me out? 🤣 bye bro, it was NEVER that deep. You didn’t ask me to leave, I told you I was leaving & left. Your rudeness is the issue since you can’t comprehend. Your dramatic rendition of the interaction is disturbing. If I was stealing why was I signing in when you approached me? It wasn’t me not having a reservation or the ability to show you. I’ve attached my reservation history since you’re pressed. Stop blowing up my email with updates to this review. It is a truthful version of my experience. Customer service training should happen here. I told you I wasn’t coming to this gym again in my review. Also, ClassPass gave me my credits back but cool. Whatever crashout you want to write just do better. And learn how to use your own website, it still says $49.95.

Horrible customer service. Just horrible experience overall. The owner will probably respond to me and say they clean the gym twice a day and have a Roomba, but they don’t. The equipment breaks regularly and they don’t respond to emails. Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere. I thought they’d get better after their horrible behavior during the pandemic, but sadly I was wrong. 4 years later, still my least favorite gym experience in the city.

Just know that when you cancel and it all goes through, and you submit your last payment, Southport Fitness will “lose” record of it and harass you several months later for not paying your monthly membership fee. AND THEN THEYLL SEND YOU TO COLLECTIONS, even though you did everything you were supposed to. Gym was broken half the time so I cancelled after barely two months, and then I had to spend the next six months fighting this [mean name here] owner until I finally caved and payed collections just to get them off my back. Will be perusing legal action. SAVE YOURSELVES.

Do not believe their lies about “easy cancellation process”. They will continually respond to your request to cancel with more and more things you have to do for them to cancel. You will have to go through your bank and have them refuse any charges from this gym. The gym will then try to bully you out of more money by threatening to send a collections agency after you. Don’t believe them. This gym conducts scummy membership policies despite the lies at sign up.

Great facility at a great location. I can be coming in from Lincoln Square and detrain from the brown line Southport platform and be at my locker in under two minutes and back on another train equally rapidly- meaning a workout at this gym adds less than 10 minutes to my commute! Treadmills face a great window wall onto Southport on the second level so observation is not reciprocal. Gym culture is respectful, I was completely new to the fitness world a year ago, and this place helped me learn so much, and they have specialized gear like the MAG handles for pulldowns and rows. Personal Training with Ken has been exceptional - well worth his price!

You get very little for the price especially compared to other gyms. It's small, there are no classes, no pool, no sauna, and not even a staffed desk for the majority of the time.
Now that I've joined another gym I'm embarrassed that I spent so many months paying for Southport Fitness when they offer so little.
On top of that their management is rude and condescending. Of course management is rarely in house so you will have to email them.

After researching many gyms in the area, Southport and Wicker Park Fitness are easily the best gyms in Chicago for the price. Always clean with well-maintained equipment, and have everything you could every need at a gym with a great variety of cardio and resistance training equipment. The gym is also 24/7 access for members, which has been greatly beneficial for me. You simply will find no better place to train for your money than at these 2 locations. In addition, the personal training deals are also unbeatable compared to any gym in or out of the city. Would recommend this personal training service and the gyms in general to anyone!

Love this gym! I had two different gym memberships prior to COVID (one near work and one near home). After COVID hit, trying to pause my membership with the big chain gym near where I worked was a nightmare, while Southport Fitness has been communicative, transparent, and helpful. Personal training sessions with Kenzie have also been fantastic – he’s understanding of my limitations put still pushes me to better myself. I definitely recommend them if you’re looking for a new gym.

Unlike all the other gyms on Northside, this one takes care of it's members. They're allowing freezes for free, made cancellation easy, and are the cleanest gym on the northside.
Love this spot, and the staff!

DO NOT JOIN! Horrible customer service! They charge while my membership was on hold because of COVID, I request to cancel my membership because I am unemployed and they refuse to do it without paying a extra month!!! I sent their agreement and didn’t say a thing about it! So awful this is not a neighbor friendly space! They make you think is your fault, but go to their Facebook and see that they are doing this to other people with the same argument! This was not properly clear on their contract, I sent the contract to ask them for a clarification and they didn’t respect what it say. What a bad and rude attitude.

Terrible experience with this gym during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, the gym failed to give any notice to its members that they would be opening on July 1, 2020. Second, the gym failed to provide notice to its members that they would be charged their monthly fee of $49.95 directly upon reopening. Third, I personally emailed management on July 2 requesting to cancel my membership and that no charge be drawn from my account for the month of July. I did not receive a response until July 12; however, that did not stop the gym from charging me $49.95 on July 6th. What makes this worse and more confusing is that my partner and two friends who were also members at the gym received full refunds when they cancelled their memberships.
I was considering renewing my membership here once I felt safe after the pandemic cleared up; however, the refusal to grant a one member a $49.95 refund while providing refunds to three other members makes no sense. You have lost a customer.

I want to thank my gym, Southport Fitness, so much for helping me out with membership during the Covid situation. Being high risk, they let me cancel my membership without fees, and will welcome me back when this is all over. That is great customer service, hands down!! I can't wait to be back. I love this gym.

This business won't take any form of membership cancellation during the pandemic. They did not try to accommodate whatsoever and are clearly taking advantage of those who have to cancel (even though they have to move to a completely different location) as some means of saving themselves. Overall the gym was decent in quality, more often than not the space was too full and you'd wait 10-20 minutes to exchange equipment. Cleaning was not well done as most of the rubber mat floors were covered with dust a sharp cloud would hit me every time I used the area. Very tight work out space I found myself waiting for space most of the time.

Southport Fitness is a great neighborhood gym. For me it’s just the right size where it’s not too big and still has just about everything you need. Staff is very friendly and they have lots of great classes to offer as well!

Best bang for your buck, compact and a bit tight at peak hours but has everything you need including personal training, HIIT, spinning and yoga. Bonus points for being immediately off the brown line stop because we all know working out doesn’t happen unless it’s convenient.

Great gym! The staff is very friendly and there is a lot of great equipment to use. I was impressed that they have an actual area for deadlifting. Sometimes you have to wait for a bench or squat rack, but the patrons are usually very friendly if you just go up and ask them how many sets they have left, etc.
If you work an early shift, this place is a godsend. Nothing better than getting off at Southport, walking in for a nice workout, and get back on the train just before rush hour.

This is a great neighborhood gym for the price especially if you go outside of the busy hours. I also found out recently that for cancellations, they used to require a certified letter by USPS with a cancellation form and keycard returned to the facility, but they've eliminated that requirement to be more accommodating to their members. They'll now accept just an email for cancellation. Very convenient and cheaper than a certified letter!

Southport fitness has everything you need out of a gym - yes the locker rooms are a little tight but you're not doing your workout there. The staff is friendly, the gym has a fair amount of equipment and the classes are a bonus too if you're looking to switch up your workout.

Great location and decent gym. Machines are sometimes not working, can be a bit busy during peak hours (especially the treadmills). Upkeep and bathroom could be better. I do enjoy some of the classes a lot. All in all, a solid gym.

Going off of what other people have said, you get what you pay for and for me this is the perfect gym. It can get a little tight in the locker room, but other than that it is a clean affordable gym that gets the job done. The towel service is also a nice plus!

This gym is definitely a good example of you get what you pay for. They do not value their membership. It is a mess with weights, towels, and unorganized equipment all over. The towels are discolored/ratty and the locker rooms are very small.
My biggest frustration is that they never input my card information correctly when I enrolled, and my payment failed EVERY month. So every month I would go in and provide the same card, they would say that it had been adjusted, and low and behold it would fail the following month. This happened for 5 months straight until just cancelling my membership, which they didn't miss a beat. Bravo 👏

By far the best place to workout in Chicago! Great staff and everything you need for great workout. I incorporate cardio and floor exercise and I am allowed to do both at Southport. I’m usually a shy person and don’t like that judgement feel yet I never get that when I walk in here, a huge plus for me. Clean, good equipment and great atmosphere. Sign up process was simple and to the point.

too small to where it doesn't have the necessities. Why waste space with classes?? Everyone knows that's just for fun but won't held serious weight loss or build muscle mass. It gets very hot in early morning and after work. Price point not worth the quality....

Overall: You get what you pay for, and Southport fitness gets the job done. Plus, it's right off the brown line.
The good: Pretty good deal in terms of what you pay vs. what you get, especially if you catch one of their specials. The service is always friendly and helpful if you need them. They have WiFi too if you want to stream music/videos. There's not a TON of equipment or weights, but they have plenty to work with. Obviously, the biggest perk is that it's right off the brown line.
The not-so-good: The locker rooms are tiny, any more than 2 people at the same time is a crowd. Only 1 stall (in the men's), and there aren't very many lockers overall. Especially the bigger ones. There's also a few that don't lock correctly, even though I've told the service desk multiple times.

Simple, straight forward, and great value. Southport Fitness is a no-frills, clean, comfortable gym with everything you need for a solid workout and nothing you don't. A super affordable monthly rate gets you new cardio equipment, fitness and spin classes, and plenty of weight machines. It can be crowded right after work, but plenty of room during non-peak hours.

Best bang for your buck in all of Chicago. Less crowded than Xsport and if you buy a year long membership it's cheaper. The staff is awesome and they will always reimburse you for months already paid for if you end up moving out of the area. Also have locations in Wicker Park and Logan Square that are free to use with a membership.

In my opinion this is the best gym in Chicago. I came from Xsport fitness where it is always extremely crowded and full of meat heads. Southport fitness is clean, friendly, new equipment and overall a great experience. They have apples for you when you are done with your workout and everyone that works there is nice and always willing to help you. It is also in a great location

I'm not a member but I've come here using a guest pass. This gym is pretty basic: one big open space with about 20 treadmills, 10 ellipticals, 5 bikes; weight room is right simple too- biceps, triceps, and quads. I've only come early in the morning or mid afternoon so I've never had to wait for any machines to be open. My roommate is a member and she's had to wait about 30 mins. for a treadmill. They always have seasonal discounts so I recommend this place.
