I’ve been training with Nikholas here for about 6 months and my experience has been fantastic. I originally trained here with John (who was also great!) before he moved to the west coast.

Prior to finding Tailored Strength, my experiences with personal trainers had been mixed, at best, as I had always felt like I was being shoehorned into a premade program that didn’t really fit me. But my experience at TS has been the exact opposite.

Nikholas is patient, thoughtful, knowledgeable and, most importantly, he tailors my workout program to meet my goals and accommodate any physical limitations or injuries. Left on my own, I would just lift heavy things all day, but he keeps me focused on balancing strength with mobility and flexibility, which is exactly what I need.

I’ve also been very impressed by how he constantly readjusts my workouts to maximize the efficiency of our sessions. In other words, he pays careful attention to what works for my body and looks for ways to enhance gains while minimizing pain and risk of injury. If I have something I want to focus on, he always works it in to our sessions, but finds maximally efficient exercises for that focus and adds complementary movements to prevent imbalances.

Also, everyone I’ve met at the gym has been super nice and welcoming. If you are looking for a personal trainer, I highly recommend this place, and Nikholas in particular.

After a long hiatus from lifting weights, I began doing the group training sessions at tailored strength 9 months ago and it has been a great experience. In the past, I have always found strength training repetitive and I hit a plateau quickly. Here the routines change monthly and ramp up as the month goes on. Their strategy has made me stronger than I have ever been. I have also noticed that I have less difficulty with other physical activities I do since I started. Nik, Joe, and Drew are all very kind. They give me great guidance and encouragement. The people I work out with in the group classes are nice as well, making it an enjoyable environment. I was also provided a nutrition guide which was very helpful. I think this combined with the classes has helped me lose 20 lbs since I started. I have always found strength training a chore in the past but I genuinely look forward to going to tailored strength.

Tailored Strength is amazing! I’ve been doing the semi-private sessions for about a year and a half, and I honestly love it here. All of the trainers are great — I genuinely couldn’t pick a favorite. They’re super encouraging and always make sure I’m using good form so I don’t get hurt. They also give us an easy way to track our workouts, which has helped me get stronger and actually notice a difference in how I feel. The atmosphere is fun, supportive, and just really positive. I’m not someone who usually enjoys working out, but I always feel great walking out of here.

I am so grateful my cousin convinced me to start going to Tailored Strength. After I had a sacral stress fracture while training for a marathon and was diagnosed with low bone density I knew I needed to take my strength training seriously. I was so nervous about lifting heavy weights, especially the barbell, but the trainers were very considerate and coached me through it. They also offered alternatives to certain lifts if I wasn't comfortable without making it feel shameful which is truly a skill! Since I've been coming to Tailored Strength for over a year and a half I have not only improved drastically in my overall strength but also my running performance. I have gotten faster and my confidence has definitely improved. I even saw an increase in my recent bone density scan which my doctor was impressed by! Coming to this gym has really changed my life for the better, and even though I don't live in the neighborhood it's worth the commute for the programming and coaching they provide in the semi-private classes. I'm very grateful to have found this gym and a community with it.

I don’t normally write reviews but I have so many amazing things to say about this gym. I cannot recommend tailored strength enough to anyone wanting to reach their fitness goals, recovering from injuries, or anyone just wanting to workout somewhere with awesome people. Drew, Nik, Joe, and Ryan are all incredibly knowledgeable, positive, and highly effective trainers. I’ve done 1:1 training and taken group classes and can honestly say I’ve never been more in shape in my life. They have helped me when I’ve had injuries and have helped me reach the different goals I set for myself!
I have also found such an incredible community at tailored strength. I didn’t know anyone when I moved to Chicago and the trainers and other members at the gym have become my second family here. They do a great job at creating a supportive and fun environment and I wouldn’t train anywhere else!

When I first came to Nikholas at Tailored Strength, I was suffering with a lingering knee injury from pickleball that six weeks of physical therapy couldn’t fully fix. Not only did he help me regain strength and mobility beyond what I achieved in PT, but he also prepared me to conquer my first Hustle Stair Climb—I was not fully mentally ready but the strength and endurance that I've gained ensured that I accomplished a goal I previously thought I couldn't! My brain fog has lifted, my energy is soaring and I continue to hit new milestones in strength and flexibility every week.

Tailored Strength is easily my favorite gym in Chicago. I’ve never been into crowded gyms or the intense CrossFit scene, but Tailored Strength in Wicker Park completely changed my mind about what a gym should be. The workouts are challenging but approachable, and the owner Ryan along with coaches Nick, Joe, and Drew genuinely care about helping you move and feel better, not just chase PRs.

They keep me accountable without ever pushing too hard, and they’re always ready with smart modifications - especially helpful for folks like me who need to be mindful of old injuries or avoid high-impact movements.

I’ve especially appreciated the 1:1 sessions with Nick - he’s awesome. He really listens, customizes the work to your needs, and makes everything make sense. And if you’re curious about the gym, definitely check out the Saturday class with Joe. It’s fun, and a great way to get a feel for the space and community.

Honestly, I never thought I’d enjoy working out, but now I actually look forward to it - mostly thanks to the supportive and welcoming vibe here. If you’re in Wicker Park and looking for a great gym, check out Tailored Strength. You won’t regret it. Plus it's affordable!

I love this place! I've had hamstring issues for the past two years that I've not been able to solve (have seen several specialists, been to multiple rounds of PT, dry needling, athletic massage, even a procedure that didn't work...), and after three months at Tailored Strength I'm FINALLY starting to see some of the results and relief that I've been looking for. I've opted for the 1:1 sessions with my trainer, Nikholas, which I think has been really instrumental in my healing and progress, given how personalized my plan and coaching has been. From the start, we talked through my particular situation and goals, and formulated a plan to work towards those goals week by week. He's always receptive to feedback, responsive to my many questions throughout the week, and provides helpful guidance on diet / protein intake as well. Beyond Nikholas, I really enjoy the general culture / camaraderie of the gym (all too easy to get carried away with fun side conversations while your precious session minutes are ticking away lol). Once I get an even better handle on my hamstring, I may transition away from 1:1 sessions and into more of the group-based classes, but definitely plan on staying a part of this gym.

I did 1:1 training with Nikholas for a few months. My goal was to get back into lifting weights again & also maintain a
healthier/active lifestyle. It was intimidating at first & although I was timid to do new & different exercises, Nikholas was very encouraging & wanted to make sure I got the best out of every session. He was very supportive & always made sure my form was good & that my body was also feeling good doing each exercises. I had a really great time here I can't wait until my schedule isn't as chaotic so I can keep pursing 1:1 training or even the classes! The gym was nice as well & all of the other trainers & athletes were kind & welcoming as well. I did a class with a few other athletes & even though it was my first class, the group made me feel welcomed & Joe was super supportive & helpful to make sure I fit right in & got familiar with the structure. Highly recommend Tailored Strength! Ryan and Nik were incredibly thoughtful during my initial intake session, took time to review my lifestyle, goals, and nutrition in detail and offered up practical and useable information and tips. I was impressed by the authenticity – there is no “drink 5 protein shakes a day and the rest will come” mentality, but rather setting approachable and individually manageable strength/workout goals complemented by balanced nutrition. Workouts are also very much individually focused and tailored, small group session are also great as couches can provide assistance/adjustments vs. what one may experience during large class. All the coaches are extremely knowledgeable and caring and all members super friendly. It is a really great community and supportive workout environment unlike what I have experienced at other studios.

I’ve been training with Nik for a few months now and I can’t imagine a better experience! I used to be in relatively good shape, but life happened and I was overwhelmed and confused on where to start again. Nik has been an invaluable resource when it comes to doing that. Best training experience I've ever had. I've been lifting weights and had multiple personal trainers since I was a teenager but I've never looked as good as I have since I started training with Joe and I'm a woman in my late 30s. I’ve been training here for the last several months and the gym and staff are great. It’s small enough so that you get personal coaching. I’ve been training with John Hiltibran and he’s done a great job at helping me manage through the areas that I’m prone to injury. I started personal training as a COMPLETE beginner in the gym. I’m injury-prone due to having a hyper-mobility disorder and have had chronic back and joint pain for over a decade, so I needed a trainer that was experienced and knowledgeable. John immediately made me feel comfortable in the gym and has always been so encouraging. We went slow and focused on form so I could learn how to do movements safely and pain-free. With every workout he has been very aware of helping me control my range of motion to avoid injury, and incorporating exercises that address my specific concerns. The crew at this gym are great! I came in wanting to improve overall fitness and push past some plateaus I was hitting. I ended up learning different forms that target muscles differently. I also really enjoyed the program starting from easier but targeted exercises to build a good foundation like floor hamstring curls and then moved on to complex movements like squats and bench press. I honestly feel like I learned how to properly bench and squat here. Overall, I'd highly recommend the gym if you're on the fence.

My husband and I went to Tailored Strength for about a year before recently moving out of the state and boy, do we miss it. We were part of the small group training sessions and we loved all of the trainers. Weight training convert! My entire life, I've been a yogi-or-nothing kind of gal. Post-baby, and on the other side of 30, I decided to try something new. Google needs more stars if I’m going to rate Tailored Strength accurately. Doesn’t matter if you’ve never seen the inside of a gym, if you physically peaked in high school, if you’ve spent the last decade hunched over a desk 80 hours a week or if you’re seasoned gym rat - TS will work for you. The coaches tailor workouts to individual capabilities and limits, allowing you to progress at your own pace while continuously improving. They’re super supportive and approachable, and their knowledge of the human body and fitness is immense. The workouts are comprehensive and dynamic and the hour flies by. If you’ve been procrastinating getting back in shape, stop it.

When I first walked into this gym I had never done any real strength training. I ride my horse and that's about it, and I wanted to be stronger. After moving to Wicker Park, I was looking for a gym for strength training and Tailored Strenght had semi-private training sessions with groups of 6 max and private one-on-one sessions. I opted for the semi-private training. Ever since the first class, everyone has been down to earth and approachable. The gym is kept clean with updated equipment.

I have been training with Joe and he is very passoinate and knowledgeable. Joe has pushed me out of my comfort zone and I was surprised with how much I can lift without any injuries. I've worked with many trainers over the years. I have some nagging injuries from a lifetime of lifting and working out and wanted someone better. Tl;dr: HIGHLY recommend Tailored Strength!! Ryan is the absolute best. And online training is great option if you don't live near his gym. I have been doing online training with Ryan for about 6 months now, and I've also done a few in person sessions/check-ins. Whatever your strength goals, whatever your fitness level, he can help you.

Online training is a great option if you need guidance and accountability, but you don't live near Tailored Strength (for reference, I live on the East Coast now). Ryan sends me a new set of weekly workouts each month, and then I check in weekly on my progress and any issues. I also usually record myself doing new movements so he can provide feedback. It's been the perfect thing for me--just enough structure, guidance, and accountability to keep me on track!

I also can't say enough nice things about Ryan personally. He is such a great trainer and person to work with. I literally could not do one pushup when I met Ryan and was very self conscious in a gym, and he never once made me feel intimidated, uncomfortable, or embarrassed about where I was at. He's always been willing to adjust and customize my plan as needed to fit my busy schedule and keep things manageable. Ryan is also just extremely knowledgeable about fitness and training--I've learned so much from him and I've made more progress since I started working with Ryan than I honestly could have ever imagined. This place is really great. I joined their semi-private training in March 2019 in preparation to lose a few pounds for my upcoming wedding. I ended up hitting my goal weight within 3 months of starting but the benefits of his training program were so much more. Other areas of my health that significantly improved was my cardio fitness, shoulder and hip mobility and my overall strength. I had gotten to a fitness level that I am not sure I had ever really gotten to in my life until that point.

I am very appreciative to the effort put in by Ryan/Haley and their team to ensure that every workout is maximized for all fitness levels. Each trainer is extremely personable and gets to know your strengths and weaknesses very early on. When I started I had limited shoulder mobility due to a previous injury and by the second and third workout each trainer knew about it and was fine tuning various parts of the workouts to fit those needs. Connor even stayed late on an occasion to go over additional movements to build and improve on that pain point for me.

I would recommend them to anyone looking for an investment in their health. There programs will pay dividends in the long run.

There are truly no words for how much I love Tailored Strength. It has become my sanctuary and I'm so glad I decided to join this unique and special place.

I've been taking private and semi-private classes for about 6 months and have seen my strength, endurance and body composition change drastically in that time. I take private lessons with both Drew and Joe and they have both been so amazing and encouraging. They always show up on time with a positive attitude, and I appreciate that they are open to letting me suggest some exercises. The semi-private classes have no more than 6 people and the trainers are very focused on form and happy to "tailor" (lol) movements to all levels. Masks are worn the entire time and proper sanitation techniques are taken after class. I leave every class feeling wrecked, in the best way possible.

All that said, the thing I love most about Tailored Strength is the sense of community that you don't get from large, corporate gyms. I felt welcomed from day 1 and like I've become a part of a great little family. Recently I was making a home repair and texted Ryan to ask if I could borrow some tools from the gym. He responded right away and told me where to find them. That kind of help is invaluable to me and makes me that much happier to support a small, locally owned business. I love Tailored Strength. The owners are great and supportive, and my personal trainer Drew has helped guide me to a healthier me.

I started with Drew a year ago, after the death of my wife. My goal was stress relief, and to get back to a healthy weight so I could be around a long time for my kids. While I used to be an athlete, and was not new to working out, I had developed a pretty sedentary life with the time pressures of an executive career and family life, over 25 years, and had gained a lot of weight.

My decision to use a personal trainer was initially made to insure I kept up the workouts and to establish a routine I could continue for the rest of my life. This decision proved fortunate when only training was allowed in gyms during the early Covid reopening. I feel safe at Tailored Strength with the reduced training-only clientele, all masked, and the cleaning protocols in place. When general gym use reopened at larger gyms, rather than return to that, I stayed at Tailored Strength.

Drew is good at what he does. He never made me feel inadequate when I was starting out after 25 years, and pushed me without discouraging me. He always asks me how my body feels before we work, and adjusts accordingly. He is very accomodating to my schedule. All this has contributed to my ability to keep up with 3x a week persona training for over a year. It has made a great difference in my health, contributing to a loss of 100 pounds! I feel great, and can't wait to go workout with him each time.

When people ask me why use a trainer, I tell them two things. A good one can help you with your technique so your workouts are efficient. On your own you develop bad habits as your body cheats without you even realizing it. They also push you. It is always harder to workout as hard as you need to on your own vs. with someone pushing you. Drew is really good at both of these things. Since we were both athletes, he knows I'm competitive and uses that to fuel my workouts. He also has a lot of patience when I ask him why we are doing a particular workout, or what muscles we are activating with slight variations of those workouts. I've learned a lot from him.

I also like the way the owner Ryan and his wife operate. The gym is a friendly, encouraging place and it sure seems like all the trainers, the management, and the clients, all like each other and encourage each other. It's a fun place, and a real respite, especially during the pandemic. I would encourage anyone, whether a beginner or experienced, to train here.

When I first came to Tailored Strength, I was not excited about working out, but Ryan is incredibly knowledgeable and approachable. I have been training at Tailored Strength for about 6 months and it has been great! I’ve interacted with several of the trainers and they are always kind and knowledgeable and the atmosphere of the gym is always friendly and welcoming.

I joined the gym after another attempt to get in shape ended with an old injury flaring up. I got a completely custom workout plan focused on strengthening my weak points to help heal and prevent future injury. Ryan Taylor has been my trainer for a few years now, first at Xport gym, then through his own business Training By Taylor, and now at Tailored Strength. He’s a great guy who knows his stuff, makes it fun, and helps you get results.

Tailored strength is it great addition to the wicker park/bucktown area. They offer both individual or group fitness sessions that are tailored to the individual’s taking part in them.

There are different options/packages for different price points, and it’s honestly a great experience each time. These guys know what they’re doing, and care about the people there assisting

I definitely recommend checking them out for group sessions especially. They’re easier on the wallet while still providing a substantially quality experience and building strength.

I've been training with Ryan for 3 months while recovering from an injury. Being in a space I felt comfortable in while working with someone who paid attention to my goals and limitations were musts when I was able to get back into a gym for the first time in a year, and Tailored Strength surpassed the mark all around. After 3+ years of saying, “I need to get in shape”, and the following year always sneaking up on me, I realized I needed a major change. I’ve tried the gym memberships. I’ve tried the diets. I’ve been lifting weights for 30 years. After so many years in the gym I started to just go through the motions. It wasn’t exciting anymore, but I needed to do it.

Ryan Taylor is an exceptional trainer. He is incredibly knowledgeable on body health and fitness technique, and he’s very motivating to work with.

I had been putting off training for years after a burst disc in my back. I was concerned that by lifting weights again, I would further injure myself. At the same time, I had chronic back pain, and I walked around with a hunch. I picked Ryan to be my trainer because he has an extensive background in the mechanics of body movement (kinesiology), personal fitness and training. This proved to be an amazing choice for my specialized needs. Ryan is very knowledgeable on spine health, and he modified exercises to help re-train my core and back muscles. He also focuses on flexibility and strength throughout the body, rather than focusing on a particular set of muscles. I’m now much more flexible, strong and pain free. I feel fantastic, and I don’t worry about pushing my body in a way that would injure myself.

Ryan is also very organized, and he has a background in nutrition. His planning was very detailed, and he focuses on overall health.

I've gotten personal training with Ryan for around 6 months now and it was one of the best decisions I've made. I wanted a personal trainer who could create a program for me that fit my goals but also educate me so that I can replicate the same exercises on my own.

Ryan has not only met my expectations but also went above and beyond what I expected when I signed up for personal training. Not only did I get a personalized program for my goals, but Ryan acted as a physical therapist for me when it came to any limited range of motion I had or any minor injuries I had obtained outside of the gym. Along with exercise, I was also getting direction from him on how to eat healthier and general macros to hit.

I started working with Ryan in 2017. My initial goal was to lean out and my go-to (running) wasn't working for me anymore.

That's when I turned to Ryan for some help.
The program that Ryan put together focused on diet and high intensity full body weight training circuits.

After 8 weeks, my body composition had changed noticeably. I felt and looked much fitter and leaner. Clothes fit better and the measurements in the areas I was concerned about bulking were actually down.

Meanwhile, during all this, I had gotten significantly stronger working with the circuits Ryan had designed. Every week I had to increase the amount of weight needed to reach that same level of exhaustion.
