I HIGHLY recommend this stellar yoga studio, one deserving of more than 5 stars! Give this studio a try.. in person or virtually!! Jim and James are definitively two of the best and most talented teachers in the country. Their classes, apprenticeships, workshops and retreats are par excellence. The combination of physical movement, conscious breathing, visualization and concentration taught by Jim and James and their excellent roster of teachers is truly outstanding.
I have been attending classes at Tejas for more than 10 years. Now in my mid 60s, my practice continues to be strong and consistent. I attribute my good health and youthful outlook in large part due to the benefits of being a Tejas Yoga student! :)

Year after year this studio does not disappoint! Tejas has recently added 2 new excellent teachers who bring great energy and talent to the studio. Becca A. teaches a fierce and fabulous vigorous class Thursday nights at 6:00pm. You will definitely sweat! :) And new instructor Eileen G. teaches open classes Tuesday/Thursdays at 9:00am. Eileen's background in physical therapy and superior knowledge of yoga make for classes that are outstanding, beneficial and fun!

I have been studying with Jim Bennit for close to ten years, starting with a retreat and all the way to ZOOM. He has helpful martial arts background, is consistently wise and down to earth with a sense of humor that makes me feel noticed and comfortable.

It was a very well-rounded practice with good functional movement cues, too. I liked the extended practice so I could 'feel' the working 'in' more quietly throughout. Thank you.

Tejas is an amazing space with teachers who are serious, supportive, caring and know a lot about the physical practice of yoga, about breath work and meditation, about Ayurveda, about human anatomy…and are also really really fun.

My first yoga studio, first yoga teachers -- and I still take classes whenever my schedule allows. Jim and James are consummate teachers: incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful, precise, and delightful. The classes have a unique way of combining asana practice, pranayama, and other approaches, and the workshops I've taken have made permanent changes in my practice. Perfect for absolute beginners and extremely advanced yogis.

Tejas Yoga Studio is a true hidden gem in the Loop. The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable, attentive, and welcoming to practitioners of all levels—from beginners to experienced yogis. The community they've built is equally wonderful: warm, supportive, and inclusive.

The studio space is clean, peaceful, and thoughtfully equipped with lockers and showers for added convenience. I also appreciate the flexibility of their class offerings, with both in-person and online options available at times that fit a busy schedule.

Whether you're looking to deepen your practice or just carve out a moment of calm in your day, Tejas is the perfect place to do it. Highly recommend!

Been going to this studio for a few years. Classes are small to mid-size which allows for extra attention and focus on poses. Classes also allow plenty of time to focus on breath work. Instructors have tons of experience teaching yoga.

Nice studio in a great / convenient location in the loop. They have great instructors who not only challenge you, but support you in improving your yoga practice. Equal emphasis is placed on breathing and meditation in addition to the physical elements.

Tejas Yoga Chicago is a very welcoming place with expert and empathetic teachers. I've been taking classes there for enough years that I've lost track of how many (three locations plus zoom). I'm really glad to still be able to attend online post-pandemic, because the current location is kind of a long haul for me.

I’m in town for the weekend and dropped in on a gentle yoga class this morning. It was the prefect class for decompressing from travel and the many miles we walked around this gorgeous city. Jenni was very kind and offered many modifications. The decor was really cool and comfortable. There was also hot tea that I was invited to stay and enjoy. Overall it was the perfect start to a Saturday morning. 😊

Tejas Yoga is truly a gem.
The teachers are not only deeply knowledgeable and rooted in tradition, but they also lead with heart and intention. The programming is rich and varied—from thoughtful workshops to powerful classes—all designed to meet you where you are. You can feel the sense of community the moment you walk in. It’s a space where you feel supported, seen, and inspired. So grateful to be part of it!

I have had classes with Jenni with Tejas Yoga for several years. She is an excellent teacher for Gentle Yoga and her ability to teach the value of balance, proper yogic breathing and other techniques acted as therapy for a shoulder injury as well as maintaining a healthy perspective and body.

Very easy to sign up for classes. Great instructors and variety of classes. The studio has levels suitable for students with abilities ranging from intro to advanced. Also, there are great classes for seniors desiring to increase their flexibility, tone and build muscle strength and improve mobility. Instructors are friendly and provide detailed explanation of poses. I'm a long-time student and love their Yoga classes.

Since the first time I practiced at Tejas Yoga I was hooked! I like the approach and the teachings. I have tried a few other studios since I moved and thought I wanted an in person experience but no other studio fulfills me spiritually or physically like Tejas. I am a loyal customer for life!

Fantastic studio! As a yoga newbie I was nervous to go to my first class but have had such a great experience at Tejas Yoga. I've done both a gentle yoga class with Jenni and the introduction to yoga series with James and will be back for more. Both James and Jenni have done an amazing job of adjusting my form as needed while being super warm, welcoming, and encouraging. The pricing is also beyond reasonable - the introduction course is a particularly great deal for anyone who's new. I'm so happy I found Tejas and will spread the word to my friends!

Great studio that provides outstanding instruction for all levels of yoga practitioners. Tejas was the first yoga studio I tried, almost 15 years ago. Since then I've tried many others, but nothing compares to the unique style they teach. Jim and James are both excellent instructors, as well as everyone that teaches there. Finding this studio was a blessing for me, as it is for everyone who has practiced with them!

The level of knowledge and experience of teachers at this studio is right in line with my picky ways. I’ve been doing yoga for over 20 years and have studied with different teachers and in different places. Whenever I come back to Tejas, it always grounds me in authentic, holistic yoga practice. Always something to learn here and you walk away from classes with a still mind- what can be more beautiful than that?! Well worth the commute 😬

Exceptional yoga studio! I practiced in person with them when I lived in Chicago and have continued to practice with their live virtual classes since I moved to NYC - because I can not find a class I like better. I love going to Jim Bennitt's class! To be fully transparent, I started at Tejas for the workout aspect - which is really great by the way. Even though I could tell it was a serious yoga class where I was surrounded by people with a more focused and intentional practice than I had, it had a warm and welcoming atmosphere and I kept showing up. I appreciate the benefits of how learning to breathe properly improved my practice in regard to both stamina in challenging poses and concentration in the meditation. Before Tejas, I was never someone who was patient or thought that the meditation portion at the end of a yoga class really did anything. Here I truly feel the benefit. When we finish class with alternate nostril breathing (my favorite breath work) I feel so energized for hours afterward. An added benefit is when I am practicing regularly I am able to sleep so much better - no need for melatonin. This practice has brought so much balance to my everyday life. I came to it as a runner who did yoga on the side and now maybe you can say I'm a yogi who runs..

I have been taking classes at Tejas for many years, at their four different locations and virtual. I love the new place, it is fantastic but I mostly appreciate them getting me through the pandemic with their online classes, it was and still is, Great to maintain the sense of community that characterises this studio.
Classes here always feel like exactly what I needed no matter how crazy my day was.

I am visiting for a week and was looking for yoga that fit into my schedule and I am so very glad I found this gem of a studio! I leave feeling balanced, relaxed and renewed. Everyone including the instructors and people in class are warm and friendly and it has a great atmosphere. I have tried a few of their class styles and have truly enjoyed everyone. I am looking forward to class next time I’m in Chicago.

For those traveling or who are new to the studio- it is inside a larger building clearly marked with the address so don’t wander around like I did looking for a sign for yoga specifically but just walk into the building. Once you’re inside the larger building- security will direct you to your class (which also made me feel very safe while practicing).

Started going to Tejas a couple years ago. I love how every single class I go to, I come out feeling so centered and relaxed. The space is beautiful and there is something so special about this place, one must check it out. The teachers are kind, supportive, and respect all their students. This place has made me love yoga so much, I got my yoga teacher training here. Their training is phenomenal! They really teach you to success as a teacher so that you can help your students success. They also have great workshops! Highly highly recommend every class, workshop, and training they provide here😌

Nice space and lots of class times available. I went to a 7am class while visiting town and although I really liked the teacher personally, I had some issues with her sequence. Seems like more of a slower paced studio than others, I barely sweat at all during the hour I was there... but if that’s what your into - good in you! Teacher had some interesting ideas and made use of the wall in ways that I hadn’t ever seen (I am also a yoga teacher) - one position in particular seemed extremely poorly placed - she had us in downward dog right up on the wall with one leg extended up in the air against said wall - without first taking adequate time to open the shoulders. Mine were screaming at me during this pose and continue to do so now. Teacher offered almost no modifications to positions - we had someone in our group that was brand new to yoga - and didn’t spend much time discussing alignment or muscle engagement - we started in mountain pose but there was nothing said about how to engage your quads and not just “stand there”. Maybe they have a loyal squad of people who are always there and don’t need these extra queues - but it made for a pretty negative experience for our friend who is new to yoga.

I started with the beginners class a few summers ago due to some recommendations from my physical therapist and loved it. I then did their foundational series over and over again because the small class sizes really allow for growth, questions, tips, and a laid back environment to learn the proper techniques and form. I have now joined the regular open classes and just can't say enough good things about this studio. The instructors are awesome. The studio is very unique and different from the 'corporate ' yoga places and I highly recommend stopping in for a class. I'm hooked.

My home away from home. I've been practicing here since they opened almost ten years ago. I've taken every workshop and teacher training they have offered, from the very first teacher training to their advanced training. Who knew I would eventually teach here? What a shocker since I had no intention to ever teach yoga! But I enjoy every moment I spend at Tejas. Jim and James have created a community of wonderful teachers, great staff, and the best students ever. This is real authentic yoga: no music or weights and plenty of breathing, movement, and meditation.

Jim Bennitt is a fantastic yoga instructor and I highly recommend his classes. He always includes a blend of moves perfect for beginners and advanced. As a grappler himself he understands how to help athletes stretch and strengthen their bodies as well as recover through injuries. I have been several times with minor joint pain or stiffness and am always leaving more flexible , balanced and much less stiff or sore. I highly recommend for not just bjj wrestling or other athletes but anyone interested in trying yoga or looking to take their yoga to the next level. Jim has an astounding amount of knowledge and genuinely cares to help his students wherever they are at. Try a class you wont be disappointed!

I just finished the introduction to yoga course at Tejas and found the class to be great! I have been on and off different yoga classes, with some classes having a more authentic style than others. I found Tejas to have this authentic style, where the instructor covers breathing techniques along with building strength and flexibility. The instructor is knowledgeable and explains the mechanics of the asana and how it benefits you. This was also among the more reasonably-priced yoga classes I could find in Chicago, charging $50 for 5 classes and they provide the mat for the intro course. Would recommend it to anyone!

It is great place to start your experience with yoga. I have just finished the course of introduction to yoga. I could not be more happy I had enrolled. Instructors are top notch and there are variety of them to pick the one that your energy levels match. There are also all levels of courses so I could start from zero and then continue to whatever level I feel like. The rooms are very clean. There are separate spaces for your coats, shoes, umbrellas etc... Staff is very professional and polite although also very friendly. Also online sign up and cancellation is very user friendly. All and all, I am very happy this place is in my zip code not to mention 5 min walk from me. The last thing: if you accidentally overpay like I did, it is no problem to get your money back in New York minute.

Deeply knowledgeable & accessible in a rare way. That's the best I can do to explain why the energy at this studio is the standard by which I compare every other spot. Jim & James created something quite unique with Tejas that will only grow as they continue to collect more like-minded & special folks to their work. So you should come, from near or far. I do. Enjoy! :)

Every class at Tejas places significant value in the final savasana and pranayama breathing exercises. At least 10 minutes of time is devoted to savasana and 10 minutes to pranayama breathing exercises and meditation/concentration. I find it so hard to meditate and perform breath work on my own - I'm grateful to the instructors here for guiding me during each class. You may not be used to this commitment to savasana and breathing if you are coming from a gym environment or a more athletic yoga practice (many yoga studios skip or make this part a DIY process), but I am grateful that this pose is not short-changed here.

I love the physical space of the Tejas studio. I feel like I'm practicing yoga in someone's home. It provides a cozy, beautiful space that exudes the genuine love of the owners. The studio is simple and offers a small changing room and a safe lobby area in which to secure your things, grab a cup of free herbal tea. You won't find a boutique of overpriced clothes, a spa, or a full-fledged locker room here but you will soon find that you won't need them. I appreciate the simplicity.

Teacher Reviews
Here are brief reviews of instructors I have taken at least 5 times at Tejas:

Jim Bennitt is a well-known yoga instructor who presents nationally, so it is not a surprise his classes are excellent. His classes are intense; he pushes you to achieve your physical and mental potential (if you choose to). No class is the same; I treasure the variety. I love the creativity he integrates in his classes; there are always new poses I have never tried. His classes combine a lot of hard work, deep instruction, and absolute attentiveness to each student.

James Tennant's classes will leave you feeling a greater sense of freedom and vitality within your body. He exudes incredible passion and joy for yoga, which drives students to feel the same. He is incredibly vigilant about understanding the physical presence of every student in class and has a great memory of each person's own yoga progress. He is absolutely engaged and attentive and present as an instructor. James also has a wonderful sense of humor, which he integrates well in each class.

Marcelyn Cole is a playful, philosophical, and precise teacher. Her classes are incredibly informative regarding shoulder and arm placement and energy as we perform the poses. I have learned so much in a few sessions about the reasons I hunch my shoulders (and how to address it). Marcelyn integrates depth in the practice, but in a way that's accessible for all.

Keely Jones is a warm, positive yoga teacher. She is such a welcoming presence with a soothing voice (I wish she could talk me through my nighttime meditation!) and breaks down each pose so that they are understandable for individuals who struggle with balance. Keely is great at describing poses in a way I can really understand and provides excellent hands-on adjustment. Keely personifies positive energy - it's great to have her as an instructor leading an uplifting workout.

Paul Hnatiw creates an instant level of comfort for students. He is exceptional at breaking down poses and explaining the anatomical basis of each pose and which muscles to focus on; you'll see fast improvement with Paul's classes . Because of Paul's knowledgeable instruction, I now know the importance of conditioning my serratus interior for so many asanas and I know what the POA is. Paul is a creative, compassionate, and memorable yoga teacher.

I don't mean to neglect Adam and Zach in my review. I simply have not taken their classes as many times!
