This gym is tiny, barely any equipment, the equipment they do have is old and broken and crappy and DIRTY. One time I pulled my phone out of the holder and a chewed up piece of gum was stuck to it! When I told them they didn’t do anything and that holder with the chewed up gum is still there, gum and all, over 2 months later. 🤢 They don’t have basic machines like leg curls and they have like 1 ab machine. There are barely any classes and they’re all in the middle of the day, so unless you’re unemployed there’s really very few options for you. The hours are inconvenient too. You pay the same price for the locations with pools and massive spaces and amazing equipment and then you have this crappy location. The only reason I keep going here is because it’s walking distance from my home, but I am actively looking for something different and I do not recommend you waste your money at this branch!

Probably the worst gym in the CAC network. Old cardio machines, minimal and old equipment all around. They keep the temperature roasting in there year round and refuse to adjust the thermostat. Many times it’s hotter in the gym than the outside temperature.

Wicker Park Athletic Club is exactly what a neighborhood gym should be. No gimmicks, no ego — just a clean, well-equipped space where you can show up, get your workout in, and move on with your day. The monthly rate is super fair, and best of all, it’s never overly crowded.

What really makes this place stand out is the vibe. People here are focused, down-to-earth, and way less pretentious than what you’ll find at places like East Bank or Midtown. It feels like a true community gym, not a social club.

While the class schedule isn’t packed with options, there’s still more than enough for most people — and they rarely overbook. If you’re looking for an affordable, legit gym where the energy is real and you can actually train, this is it.

I cancelled the membership. When I went back about 4 months later to start the membership again and found out that they have been charging me for all these months.
So I asked the guy in the front desk to cancel my subscription. This guy wanted to charge me for one more month instead of refunding the money they charge/stole from me.
They will use loopholes to steal your money at least that's how they treated even though I had been their customer for almost 5 years.

Racist organization. They denied my corporate membership because they said my business did not "make a good fit". Not sure what that even means, but they did not even explain why once they did their "research" on my small business. I never pulled the racist card ever, but we start to see how this world really operates.

This is the 3rd day in a row that Iit is HOTTER inside(83°), than it is outside (72°) . While the staff is comfortable in t -shirts and shorts. From the 12 years of managing other gyms, this is not normal. My undergrad is exercise physiology and can tell you for fact this works against improving and gaining performance. If your goal is to lose weight, sweating does nothing but to improving your fitness you need a regulated core temp, when trying to improve it works against you. Think about a runner… all professional runners would move to AZ if heat helped. They must not care about your goals at WPAC… but they do care enough to charge you to use equipment that is “cleaned” with mops.

this is the worst in the family. not pool or hot tub, no sauna or steam room. every weight machine seems to have one of each weight, there are no mid weights for any of the long pull or double purchase pulley machines. not to mention most of the metal gear leaves my hands wounded, but never been a problem at any of the other branches. how does that work?! and to top it, there’s currently a leak 2 feet from me and no bucket under it just dripping away, which is icing on the cake. so small of a gym and soooo many people. if i didn’t work next door sometimes i would def not use this one…

I’ve been a member for 7 years and the gym has become way more run down in that time. There have been virtually no improvements over the years and minimal efforts to upkeep. Last summer the sound system was consistently broken in one of the studios where they host classes. The past two weeks the air conditioning has been broken in the same studio, resulting in classes taking place in 80+ degree temps. Lockers are consistently broken too and it’s clear staff doesn’t go around to check which are broken regularly. The only reason i’m still a member here is because the location is convenient, i’ve developed relationships with class instructors overtime and really like them, and i like the classes. Everything else is in disarray…

I have been going to this gym for two years now and I think it is great. They have so many classes on the schedule to choose from, great instructors, clean workout rooms, the women’s locker room is big. One year ago we had issues with a lot of lockers whose doors could not lock but they fixed that so it’s all good now. Bathrooms are clean. There are hair dryers and body lotions available at any time. I have no complaints.

The front desk staff is very unorganized. They’ve charged me the wrong membership, forgotten to add my birthday guest pass last year and now they’re claiming that the contract was never signed, even though I have email confirmation it was. And they’re questioning if I’m being charged for membership, even though I’m seeing the charges on my account. The lack of communication and organization between the staff members is causing unnecessary confusion and annoyances. It’s frustrating because the gym itself is a set up nicely, the issues seem to only be with the front staff.

The limited hours at this gym completely outweigh any benefits and cause a lot of overcrowding in the evenings. I frequently have to wait for equipment 30 minutes before closing because it is still so busy. 8pm close time on Friday and 7pm on weekends is so bizarre and 9pm is still too early during the week.

I enrolled at WPAC at the end of February 2024 and recently canceled my membership after an absolutely abysmal experience. But, in an effort to be as unbiased as possible I will list some of the positive and negative considerations of the facility :

Pro:
-inexpensive monthly fee
-front desk staff is generally friendly, sitting around on their phones (Nick is an absolute gentleman and extraordinarily kind)
-relatively clean facility
-free parking

Con:
-very old equipment
-lack of class options and times
-small locker room with only a couple of showers, no hairdryers, etc…
-very limited number of cardio machines and weight stations
-personal training staff is inattentive, dismissive and hard to work with
-communication with management drove no result
-open/closed hours are very loose - they rush you out so the staff can leave as early as possible and make you wait outside in the morning until they decide to open
-the parking lot is really small, always full

On the day I signed up at WPAC I purchased a promotion for personal training which I was looking really forward to. I was told someone would get in touch with me immediately. I waited for 2 weeks for someone to contact me. Once I was matched with a trainer, I filled out duplicative information pertaining to my health goals (I’m not sure why they didn’t share the original document I provided) and was setup with the least enthusiastic trainer I’ve ever worked out with. Eventually she moved to another location, but tried to get me to change my schedule to accommodate hers - when I mentioned I couldn’t shift my availability, she was completely dismissive and stopped responding to my polite emails. I figured that I may have just picked a “bad apple” and decided to purchase another personal training package.

For the next month there was not one trainer who was willing to accommodate my schedule (early mornings are best for me, not exactly a peculiar time to workout), and once I was finally matched with someone I had to submit the same paperwork again. I thought everything would be okay, so I let it go. I was matched with another trainer who was unwilling to work with my schedule. I was so discouraged that I moved things around to accommodate his availability because I was really eager to get started in sessions. 45 minutes before our first scheduled session he emailed me (did not call or text) to say he had a pet emergency and had to cancel (I completely understand, life happens). Again I compromised my schedule to try to meet with him at an inopportune time for me, but he said “it was too difficult to come and meet with me because of the travel time to get to WPAC from his home”. Weeks and weeks went by and no one reached out from the personal training department which resulted in me having to contact them and literally BEG for help and assign me a personal trainer, and again I was expected to adhere to the prospective trainers travel schedules - it’s difficult to fathom that a standing appointment at 6am was unorthodox, but at WPAC none of the trainers are willing to to work that early - don’t bother trying.

At every turn, I was treated like they were doing me a favor. After several months, I decided that I didn’t deserve this negligent and borderline abusive treatment and canceled my membership (which they wouldn’t prorate for my troubles) - I am supremely confident that there are many competitive facilities in the area that will value my business, and others.

People deserve to be treated with basic respect and kindness, both of which appear to be absent at WPAC. Save yourself the trouble.

I would rate them zero if I could! I have been trying to cancel my month to month contract to no avail. I have not attended the gym since July and here it is November and I have still discovered charges on my account. No one is accountable for the numerous amount of times I have requested cancelation and everytime I talk to someone different they ask for "proof" but everyone I speak to refuses to give me "proof" for next time. This is a horrible way to conduct business and if I ever wanted to resume membership I wouldn't anymore.

Gym would be great if they would listen to what everyone is saying, which is to increase their open hours. Got kicked out at 7pm sharp toward the end of my workout. 7pm is so early for a gym to close, its just weird. There’s also a strangely low amount of weight plates available.

Sales managers screw you - Choose a YMCA over these scammers.
Like some others have already stated, cancelation and contract policy is scam-like at best, predatory and forceful at worst.

Although there are options that help you pay at your own pace and keep you safe from their predatory "12 month contract" they don't tell you about them until its too late and you've already sold your soul to them through the convenience of a point of sale system when you sign up.

Even when you are given "grace" with their "freeze" policy - they still charge you up the *ss if you don't cancel in time, of course, no one notifies you to do so on time.

They do not care if you can't pay, they will send you to collections and lawyer up according to their VERY predatory contract which they do not disclose to you when you sign up.

Read the fine print, or be charged thousands of dollars "with" your coerced consent -_-

I feel bad for all the people I've had to repeatedly call and email for the past two months....

Member Beware: Very shady cancellation practices. SO tried cancelling 30 days in advance - charged. Then 30 days later (60 days if total of notification) tried cancelling - they said everything was good - still charged. Was told to cancel credit card just to make them stop charging. Horrible practices.

Gym kinda stinks. Been a member for about 4 years, only reason I still am is that the location is very convenient. Hours are really horrible compared to most gyms at this price point. Closing at 8 on a Friday is absurd. The club isnt cheap compared to other options but they cant pay for employees to stay til 9.

Full of people with bad etiquette (but the employees are very nice). If youre serious about training this location is bad.

Can't wait to move and get a new gym!

This is one of the best gyms I've been to with some of the worst hours. Before the pandemic they were closing at 11pm weekdays, 10pm weekends and 9pm Friday for some reason. Now it's 9pm weekdays, 7pm weekends, 8pm Friday. Ridiculous. This is the only gym I've been to in my life that closes every day before midnight, and it got worse after the pandemic. These people do not understand how people use gyms, which you would think is something that would be important to them. I'm down to 1 workout per week because the gym closes so early. I may have to switch to the smaller gym on Division.

Gym, equipment, staff, and classes are all good no complaints there. However the parking lot is such a disaster that it makes coming to this CAC location difficult. Takes 10 minutes to get out of a spot and they allow people to park on the street blocking the lot which makes it even more difficult to get out. Parking is a NIGHTMARE essentially

Very disappointed at how Wicker Park Athletic is handling the global pandemic situation - I wrote to them during the summer, explaining that with an at-risk partner, I do not feel comfortable entering the facility and was told by someone at their staff that they would be putting my account on a "temporary complimentary freeze" until September at which point the freeze would then cost me 15$ for up to 6 months. In reviewing my bank statements today I discovered that they've been charging me the full membership fee since October in spite of my agreement and understanding that this would not take place without my consent. I received no communications at all to indicate that my "complimentary freeze" period had ended and unless I registered myself as "freeze" yet again, they'd begin regular billing. Keep in mind, I haven't stepped foot in that gym for over a year with COVID in the mix. "Customer Care" has been extremely unhelpful and unempathetic and refuses to do anything to help right this wrong. I know I'm not the only person experiencing this - Times are tough for everyone and I wish I could patronize small, indoor businesses right now but I simply cannot. I am very discouraged that this company is taking advantage of their customers during this crisis - Would not recommend this business to anyone - find a place that values their customers and does not deceive them for financial gain. Disgusting.

EDIT - It's been over a month since I sent my final (I thought) email to the staff at Wicker Park Athletic, stating I needed my account to be cancelled immediately and informing them I would be taking the necessary actions to dispute their exploitative charges - I received no replies from them and just realized they've gone ahead and charged me twice since then. I am livid- Taking financial advantage of people during a global pandemic. Do not give these people your business - They give zero regard for you or your situation and will sneakily try and squeeze as much money out of you as they can. Reprehensible.

Steer clear of this gym. This is a tiny facility that over charges all members. Cancellations have to be processed 2 months before, so when you cancel you are still paying for a gym membership you don’t want to use. Manager sits on top of the front desk when dealing with members, super unprofessional and looked childish. Sitting on top of a table trying to get money from clients. The gym itself is okay, for $80 you would think you would have access to something. You got a few benches, squat racks and some cardio machines. Might as well go to Lifetime fitness or Equinox, at least they have value for their price. Predatory, sleazy, sneaky, typically gym membership tactics, be aware before signing up.

PLease note I thoroughly enjoyed the facilities but they are not trying to take advantage during Covid to not allow me to hold my membership. I sent a message to them on Nov 1st per the agreement to request a hold on my account. They currently have billed me twice and have stated they now cannot put my account on hold as to there being a balance on my account. This feel a little predatory and trying to take advantage of people during this pandemic, being an essential worker I decided to put my membership on hold as to not increase my chances of catching anything but now they are strapping me with fees and payments and holding me hostage to not put my membership on hold.

I'm giving wicker park 4 stars because I came from the webster place gym that unexpectedly close. I really enjoyed Ariel yoga, the sauna/steam room and the overall space and amenities of webster place. Again, not a fault to wicker park. It's a difficult transition especially with the lack of space and parking ; it makes it hard to feel motivated to come in. In general staff is very nice, i do like the chicago athletic clubs format and classes.
My only other gripe is that I felt patronized when signing up for a returning membership. I was told while signing up due to my profession I would be getting a great deal. In actuality the sales rep just gave me the current promotion during the time. I didn't say anything in moment cause it happened very quickly but as I reflect that experience was really appalling to experience.

Nice layout and helpful staff. However, after going to other CAC locations it seems like this gym is a bit neglected. Crowding is insanely bad and gets worse every week. Lines to lift are long and the locker rooms horribly small. These issues do not seems to be as bad at other CAC locations such as BAC and LPAC, which also seem to have more comprehensive class schedule. That said the energy is good and staff is nice, I just wish this gym got the attention from admin that it deserves.

I normally go to BAC because I get off the Damen/blue line after work and go right in. Today is my day off so I decided to check this one out. I liked how the cardio machines are close to the work out equipment. It makes it easier to keep your heart rate up if you're looking to do a circuit work out. They also have a bigger variety of leg and ab machines. I don't think it's better than BAC, but if I have to choose where to go on back and leg day, it would be the Wicker Park location.

I loved this club until I had to move to another state months before my membership contract was up. I knew I would have to pay out my contract, however when I called to cancel, I was "too early" (2 months ahead of time) and she "couldn't do it at that time". They told me to call back in November and cancel. So...I called today and they say there's nothing they can do and I will have to pay for December too since I was not within the 30 days of my next payment. Wait...didn't I call really early and try to cancel? Ridiculous. I have patiently been paying every month for a gym I can't attend and they find a way to suck another month out of me? I talked to 3 different people and "there's nothing they can do". A facility of this size and reputation should try to be more accommodating to their members. I tried to tell the representative I talked to on the phone months ahead of time to "flag my account" or set up a reminder email...(even though I put one in my phone)...to make sure to cancel when my contract was up. Apparently, they don't care about the person, just the monthly payments. I am extremely disappointed.

I only visit this club occasionally as I primarily go to West loop location. This is probably my least favorite CAC location as it gets very crowded, and when it gets crowded the studio floors gets dirty. They do not wipe down the studio floor in between as they schedule classes back to back and if you come after a sweaty class, the floor do get gross. Plus if you go to a class that doesn't need shoes and class before does wear shoe, your feet pick up all the dirt. They need to think about the way they schedule group classes. Otherwise the club is fine: clean locker rooms, professional staff, and fair equipment set.

Working professional's gym, with very nice team of workers and enough equipment to get a well rounded workout in. Highest traffic between 5:00 and 6:30 PM. Folks seem to get in and get out. Classes during these peak hours are packed. Good gym for folks living between Chicago and North Ave, and Damen and Ashland Ave. Close to grocery, pharmacy, restaurants, bars, public transportation and spas so folks can get stuff done coming and going. Floor-plan is limiting from the sense it doesn't allow for cross-fit or basketball court. Treadmills tread is dirty, and the head-phone volume is capped at 30, so it's sometimes hard to hear the tvs when the gym is crowded. While steam rooms and saunas are nice, you wouldn't want this amenity at this gym with such a big clientele.
