Great workout facility. Nice machines and free weights. Ample equipment. I rarely wait to use a piece of equipment. Honestly, I don't recall the last time I had to wait. 24/7 access. Friendly staff. Under new MGMT. And unexpected improvements are happening now. Friendly clientele, too.

Charter is a cheaper gym. It is not the fanciest place not does it have the greatest equipment. But it's definitely worth it's membership fee. They have all the equipment you really would need to get your routine completed.

I was thankful and impressed recently with a specific request of something I wish the gym had and thought would make it better. They took my feedback seriously and made it happen. As they finish working through some of the changes they have going on with now offering 24/7/365 access, I feel strongly this would be the best gym in our area. Specifically, for offering the type of equipment needed for anyone who is more advanced than just a brand new beginner. I feel this is a huge advantage Charter has over other large chain gyms that cater to beginners and discriminate against more advanced members.

Very good gym (good working-out environment) but took a star off lately because of a lack of maintenance: one of the cable machines in the back weight room has been broke for almost 2 months now with no explanation of what is holding things.
Nevertheless, for.the price, this is the best gym in town for weight lifting; they have everything you need to get a broad-based workout in. Just need the management to be more timely with fixing broken machines.

I've been a member with Charter going on 3 years now. My home gym is the Mishawaka branch. I was visiting Valpo for a week on business and was really excited to see a different Charter branch. With Mishawaka being one of their newest gyms I wasn't sure what to expect. I can honestly say though that I was not disappointed. Yes, it is small which i spoke to the manager about and gave her some ideas on how make the space seem bigger and more open. I've been to gyms similar in size though with way less equipment. Valpo is one of their oldest gyms and I thought it was in good shape. Yes the equipment is older, but even new gyms will start out with used equipment. I've only ever been a member of a gym with completely new equipment. If you care enough about fitness you don't need all the new fancy equipment.
The staff at this branch have been really nice so far although I've only met one trainer. Which could just be because of the time I'm there. As far as the corporation as a whole goes I've had one mishap with a payment, but it was corrected immediately with no fuss.

Worst customer service I have ever seen. I canβt tell if they are just plain stupid or they are a massive scam. After being a member of this gym for 2 years until I moved out of state, you would think canceling a membership would be cake. I was so wrong. I cancelled my membership in July 2017, it is March 2018 and I am still being charged a monthly fee after calling to cancel and being told I would get a refund several times. I would never recommend this place.

Very displeased with my experience at this gym. My husband found out we were moving to the northeast 25 days after our "year anniversary" at the gym. We went to cancel our membership and were still charged the $40 annual service fee, plus another month. We were moving April 9, and would have no access to the gym (aside from a 12 hour car drive). The manager at the Valparaiso gym would not budge to waive the charge. So, my husband and I spent $120 for 5 more days at the gym. Absolutely terrible customer service and DO NOT RECOMMEND signing a contract with them. Absolutely no mercy. On a side note, very dirty gym and bathroom.

I just got off the phone with the general manager of the Valparaiso, IN location. I spoke with one the associates over 4 months ago about cancelling my membership because I was moving out of state and Charter Fitness was not within the 25 mile radius they state in your contract. The associate identified who I was by information I gave to them for verification. I was told that my membership would be cancelled and I would not be charged for anymore months.
Well not true. 4 months later they are still trying to illegally take my money which I will have blocked and not wanting to return the money they have taken (stolen) from my account.
On top of this I guess the inflamed manager would like to drive to Rockford to discuss this matter face to face. I guess his muscle potential overwhelms his mental capacity by a great degree of difference. I ask for the corporate office and he explains that there is no corporate office. They are all franchises. Well this means some corporation owns the franchising rights. Again, all muscle no brains.
This is a very corrupt style for doing business. I will be reaching out to agencies so I can explain how this particular location operates. Any manager afraid of giving out the owner/president name and contact information is for 1 of 2 reasons: The manager is covering up his work practices/ethics or the owner/president chooses to run his company in this manner and pays his/her management to screen and block these calls.
If you have had this same situation, which reading the reviews some other members have, take the time to report this to you better business bureau. You work hard for your money and this company should not let $40 be the difference in offering great customer service and management wanting to drive 150 miles to discuss this contract face to face. Seems to be a bit threatening.
Fortunately, I am blessed to have a great Corporate legal team who can handle these uncommon practices. I am sorry for those who have to buckle to threats and legal bull crap that will not hold up in court where I will be taking my case to.
Stay away from this Copone type establishment. It just isn't worth it. You will end up getting a better workout just getting your money back and an honest answer.
Thank you consumers for taking the time to read this and the other surveys about Charter Fitness Valparaiso, IN. I'm positive the management will probably never see this due to the fact it is on Google reviews and they haven't responded to any of those reviews.

I had a membership at Cardinal Fitness and then Charter Fitness after. The gym was ok, small but efficient for what I needed. When it came time to get out of my contract, I was told I needed to submit so much information. When I did, they called my family member to tell me it wasn't enough, then proceeded to get in an argument with me over what was said and what wasn't said.
Tl;dr Gym's sparse but adequate, management is garbage.

I've worked out at charter here and there for about eight months. The first thing I have to say about this place is it's extremely unsanitary. You have an additional fee for forty-five dollars which is supposed to pay for the people to clean the place. However, attending this place day and night I have never seen anyone wipe down equipment. This place is so unsanitary they don't even have soap in the bathrooms half of the time. The machines there are always broke. They had a rowing and a curling machine in there for 2 months before it got fixed. It was just a cable, I'd like to mention. They only have one squat rack. There's no getting out of your contract at all. The management there is awful and rude. They make you feel like you don't belong. They tell you lies like, the place will be expanding to get you to sign up. It is just an awful place to workout at if you ask me. Take your money somewhere elseβ¦

Terrible management. Literally had a General Manager yelling at me over the phone after discussing the fees associated with membership. At first glance, this may look cost effective, but after the fees are issued, it is not. Management is short tempered, totally disrespectful, and needs a lesson in customer service. Get with it people!!!!
The other reviews are true in what they say: shotty equipment that never gets fixed. Out of the dozen or so treadmills, only a couple have responsive buttons. When equipment breaks, it's done. Staff just puts an "out of order (permanently)" sign on it.

This Jim double charged my card every month for an entire year it took them over 12 months to give me my money back and reverse the charges and to fix the issues after 5 personal visits with the manager he finally fix it after I made me run to the other Hobart location to verify that they also had my information for them. After I got fed up dealing with that missed sharging me I told them to cancel my membership and he stated he would charge me an additional $60 to cancel a membership after overcharging me for one year this place is a joke unprofessional I'm cancelling and I'm going to spread through the entire internet what type of business they are running.

I had a membership with Cardinal Fitness for about a year. I had a credit card switched at a bar one night and had to get a new one. Cardinal Fitness failed to call me for 4 months and notify me my monthly charge was being declined. However they had no problem charging me an additional $15 per month for failed credit card transaction. They also failed to notify me that when I canceled that I was going to be billed for an additional months membership.
This gym is shady. Don't go here!
