Been coming here for some years now. Sarah at the front is the best but everyone here is really friendly.
Iβm SUPER introverted and have RBF so Iβve only made a handful of friends through requesting a spot or to work in with someone, but itβs not uncommon to see everyone at the gym interact with each other - super friendly and welcoming environment.
Looks like a hardcore scary gym but absolutely anyone and everyone is welcome here and will most likely make friends unless youβre anti social like me lol.

If you wish to go to a gym with the type of people who disregard the basic safety of driving to and from the gym, this is the one for you. Living close to this gym is an absolute nightmare having to listen and deal with the constant daily reckless driving just to go lift weights to show off to the "bros".

Best gym in Bloomington hands down. I've been a member for 5 years and also joined some other gyms at the same time. None hold a candle to the pit. Great community atmosphere and I've met some good friends through it! My only request would be a posing room. :)

I've on-and-off been a member of Iron Pit for the past 10 years, but only recently at the (now not-so) new location. The facilities are really great. There is a ton of free weight equipment and even when it is busy it's reasonably easy to get on a rack to get your workout done. I'm not a power user of the space by any means; I don't use the weight machines, I don't use their personal trainers, their locker facilities, their kettle balls, or anything like that. Mostly I am strictly a cardio and barbell lifting person. Iron Pit is an affordable option for the resources they provide, and their 24/7 facility means getting into the gym is convenient for me no matter what's going on in the week. They've been great for a decade at least.

Faculty and space is PERFECT. Everyone here is beyond nice and the equipment is top notch
BUT i haveeee to remove a star because barely any of the lockers work properly and there are NO handle grips for the cable machines. They are in desperate need of some, as almost all of what once was are broke :(
These are both fixable and theyre not gonna stop me from loving this gym, just definitely points of criticism <3

I Have been lifting for over 12 years and have yet to find a more diverse gym. I think the greatest part about the pit is the culture. People are looking to improve, plain and simple. If you stick around long enough you will see lots of things that will inspire you from the people that work out there. There is a large spacious cardio area, competition benches, lots of squat racks, several Lifting platforms for olympic lifting, and variety of specialty bars and tools for experienced lifters to use. In addition they have a large selection of machines for bodybuilders, and an ever growing selection of equipment for people interested in strongman training. The Olympic weightlifting area is ran and coached by Wil Fleming a world champion weightlifter. I could not recommend him more if that is something you are interested in pursuing. The gym is superb and definitely worth the drive for college students looking for a more serious workout environment.

Plenty of free weights, weight machines, cardio machines, and free weight equipment. Turf grass area for crossfit activities, sauna, showers, changing room with lockers, and even an on site physical therapist if needed. Plenty of Televisions near the cardio to take your mind off the fact that you're dying. 24 hour key entree is always nice.

One of my favorite places on earth.
I've been at Iron Pit for about 5 years now. It's a clean, affordable, no-funny-business sort of gym. They get the basics really right, instead of trying to go with kitschy themes or trendy nonsense. Matt and Doug have created a truly welcoming environment for the bodybuilders, the powerlifters, the sportsballers, the operational athletes, and those newly embarked on a fitness journey alike, by providing versatile tools and a friendly place, instead of trying to play to one stereotype.
I started lifting at Iron Pit when my joined my first civilian search-and-rescue, and realized I no longer had a bunch of well-muscled soldiers to back me up. My son started lifting there at age 12, as a geeky autistic kid, and Matt took a lot of time to help him feel confident in the gym, and random strangers even pitched in. Now I have a 15yo who values fitness and is really learning to take care of himself.

Great place to work out. Nobody who works out here comes in to show off their new "spiffy" work out outfit, there is no fancy cafe attached to the place, no tanning booths, it's a gym folks. You want to work out with people who have the same idea, this is the place to be. Need some advice about some workout issue, ask Greg, he's there a lot as a personal trainer, oh yeah did I mention he is a world champion lifter as well as teaching at IU. Matt and Doug are great as owners, always there and also always part of the scene, Doug is in the middle of the power lifting scene most mornings. One final thought, if you are old, fat and out of shape as I am, nobody is going to make fun of you and your efforts to get better, in fact it's the exact opposite at the PIT you get encouragement .

If i still lived in Bloomington I'd lift here. The owners are good people. The gym has decent equipment. Rates are reasonable. I've never really tried lifting during rush hour so can't comment on that aspect. The locker room is nothing magical but it's clean and gets the job done. If i could change one thing it would be the sauna. Co-ed saunas are pointless, as you're supposed to be naked (or wearing only a towel) when you use a sauna. Otherwise this gym is sort of what the HPER used to be, in a good way. If you are unaffiliated with IU or simply can't stand the students, this is the only serious weightlifting option in town.

The equipment is great, they have several squat racks, more than a dozen barbells, plenty of different plates and dumbbell sets, kettle bells, lots of cardio equipment, rowing machines, stair climbers, etc.

Iron Pit is the single greatest gym I have ever been apart of! The atmosphere has an old school nitty gritty feel that makes you want to get in kick your workouts butt! The gym is fairly busy from 3-8 as all gyms will be because most people are getting off work around those times! There is always something to do there with many variations for all your muscle groups! You should never run out of workouts to do or have to cut workouts short because of the business of the gym! There are 8 different areas to do your squatting ranging for squat racks to smith machines! The people that make up the population of the gym are all very kind and are not afraid to share the knowledge they have acquired over the years from all the other members! We are a group of people all trying to better eachother! Also there are many options for payments ranging from monthly payments coming out of your card to one single month for $45 with 3 and 6 month plans and a full year plan! You're not limited on how long or short you are required to join! The two men who own the iron pit are both the nicest caring funny guys I have ever met! if you take the time out of our day to talk to them you would see the jeans they wear don't mean a damn thing!

The Iron Pit is kind of old school and a great place to work out. I was hesitant to go because I am so very far away from the competitive lifters that are a core part of the community of this gym. I have never felt anything but welcome. On the very rare occasions one of the serious weight lifters left more weights than I can manage to even move on a machine, it was handled with grace and humor when I asked for help.
There will not be pizza parties. No one talks on their phone. It is a fine place to go be out of shape or amazingly in shape and work out. It is very mellow but quietly wlecoming. There is not formal "no jerks" policy but I have seen a couple of jerks come, but they go too. Or mellow out. It is a very no bs place to work on your next level, whether it is 20 lbs or 200 or more.
All the trainers are independent. There is no up-selling or pressure. There is no judgement -- if you are there, you are working out, then you are in the right place.

My trainer, Jason Figley, has changed my life, teaching me the correct form when lifting weights and a nutritional program that I can follow for the rest of my life. I have been trying, with no luck, to find a gym like this in my new town. I am convinced this is a one and only type of gym. There are people of all ages, teens, stay at home moms, to 80 year olds. The atmosphere is exactly what you would want if you are serious about getting your workout in. This hidden 'gym' is absolutely the BEST!!!

This amazing Gym is owned and operated by two of the greatest men I've ever had the privilege of knowing. 24 hour access, clean and friendly staff. No matter your fitness goals, Iron Pit is THE place to go.

I cannot speak more highly of this place! I am a powerlifter and weightlifter who travels for work, and I have dropped in to dozens of gyms across the country...few are as affordable and welcoming as this. I need to work out very early in the morning when the gym isn't staffed, so Doug set me up with a guest entry key the night before. The drop in rate is only $8, which is a steal compared to the going rate of $20 for most barbell and crossfit gyms. To top it all off, there is both Olympic lifting and powerlifting equipment available in addition to all of the standard gym machines. Five stars, would love to drop in again if I'm ever back in Bloomington.

This gym is well over capacity. I started by trying to work out in the early evenings only to find it was overcrowded. "My mistake, It's a popular time," I told myself. So I slowly moved my workouts back later and later into the evening. Always crowded. Always waiting in line. I finally get to the point of coming in at 11pm and it's still packed. Good luck trying to find an open squat rack or bench. Instead, you will find them occupied by people who enjoy staring at themselves in the mirror or milling around the rack instead of actually using the damn thing. These people are occupying machines and racks while they text their friends. I've lit a match to $120 (the minimum, 3-month membership) and I suspect that the owners (or whoever the old, obese folks are that hang around the gym in jeans) are aware of the issue as they appear to be in at all hours, also milling around and talking to the people using machines/racks further adding to the issue.
"A friendly atmosphere"? Sure, if you consider friendly to mean being stared at by the people standing around not lifting the weights that they have racked up.
"A great place to workout"? Possibly... at 3am. Presumably there might be few enough people in the gym at this time to NOT give the Fire Marshall a heart attack.
I get that the point of a business is to "make that money" but it's unadulterated scumbaggery to take people's money when you know full well you are over capacity throughout the waking day. It's either time to expand or turn people away.
If I could award this gym with a zero-star review I would not hesitate to do so.

Best gym in town, especially for the value.
