Honestly, I hate leaving bad reviews, but every time I leave Midwest, I find myself overall displeased with the experience. I only use the ice rink at Midwest and do not know the quality of the gym.

The staff does not do anything about parents crowding the entry to the ice. I cannot step on or off the ice without at least two parents blocking the area to film their child(ren). The entry should be left clear for skaters to enter/ exit safely, I should not have to dodge parents, there’s so much seating available!

Next, the ice. I went this afternoon for a public skate. I had the goal to practice some basic figure skating elements and wanted relatively smooth ice. I stepped onto the ice and it was so choppy. The desk staff let me know they opted to not Zamboni the ice as the tournament prior to the skate ran late. While I understand games run late, the ice was unacceptable for skating. It would not have hurt to delay the skate 10 minutes to cut the ice, everyone pays $10.00 with the expectation of fresh ice at the start of the session!

My last, smaller gripe is that the skate guards aren’t the most attentive at times. A lot of inexperienced skaters seem to not follow the flow of the rink / run into figure skaters in the center ice when they’re practicing.

The only saving grace I will say, is that one time my partner had a minor injury and the front desk staff was very compassionate and assisted them properly. The front desk staff member even called a few days later to check in

As a whole, I don’t hate Midwest, I just wish the staff would enforce safety rules and maintain the ice we pay for. It is a very bad look for the rink to not provide a safe, quality experience.

The kids had fun at open gym. But word of advice to this company - don’t put a worker out there who hates kids. The guy overseeing the open gym was making up a new rule every 5 minutes and yelling at the kids very harshly. It’s hard for them to understand new rule after new rule. Maybe add signs or arrows telling the kids were they can and can not go.

Solid rink but the ice needs to be refinished. Maybe clean the bathrooms in the rink.

Gets 4 stars because the Black Birdie Bar/Restaurant with the golf simulators are there.

We had a birthday party; they had other gymnasts using the gym for practice and telling the (party) kids to get off the trampolines so they could train. Not super cool to pay for gym time for 6-year olds and have a coach and gymnast tell them to get off the trampoline during the party so they could practice.

We have been coming to Midwest for 7 years. We are at the rink/gym 5-7 days a week. My child has been figure skating for all that time and we are also on our third year of Allstar cheer with the CEA Midwest team. We love our figure skating coach Stephanie! She goes above and beyond for these skaters. She helps my daughter learn and pushes her use her potential. She usually skates 4 days a week. Our cheer and tumbling coaches Jen, Tawnia, Sam, Jordan, Alicia, VeVe, Johnathon, and Morgan are great with her and keep me up to date on her goals and progress. But we also keep coming back because Midwest is like a 2nd home to us. The staff at the desk, Karen, Lisa and others are always helpful and friendly. Joel and the staff at the Blackbirdie Grill are always great with my daughter and myself. Just can’t recommend them enough!

I come in to skate during the morning (when most people don’t want to be awake) and Karen always manages to greet me with a smile and ask me how I’m doing. She knows who I am and is able to make connections with the different customers who come to Midwest. I genuinely look forward to coming to Midwest and seeing people like Karen and Stephanie!

Terrible place to play hockey.

1. Instructors and coaches are weak.
2. Its run a business, not for development of the sport or skill.
3. Theres a higher than normal parental behavioral problems at games and midwest does nothing about it.

If you want to your kids to play hockey, make the drive and play somewhere else. Orland park has a solid system.

I would LOVE to give 5 stars but…

The coaches, cheer program, and figure skating programs at this facility are amazing. Love coach Veve, coach Alicia, coach Mir, coach Stephanie, the list goes on. The classes my kiddos are in are structured very well and they are progressing exceptionally well. This place is basically our second home. HOWEVER my biggest complaint is the cleanliness of the bathrooms. (Yes I have mentioned this to front desk staff). They are absolutely unacceptable and we’ve been here over 5 years now with unfortunately no improvements. Not all the sinks work, hooks are broken off the doors, and they are really just all around gross. Please make updates to the restroom facilities and this place would be worth 5 thousand stars ⭐️ We love our Midwest family and they deserve the best!

I’ve been twice and didn’t have any problems right out either time, but what I find very disappointing is the seal rental process. When I last visited on January 14th, I rented four seals at an additional $20 for myself and three kids. I was given four blue lanyards as proof that I paid. I put all four around my neck and off to the arena we went. 💨💨💨 Time for some ice-cold fun.

Fast forward ten minutes later, another child has taken the seal belonging to my six-year-old daughter. When I asked the child for it back, he said he’d already given it away and didn’t remember who he gave it to. This is where a number system might have worked better. Each seal needs to be numbered and the corresponding numbered lanyard given to the customer.

I ended up giving her my seal and wasn’t able to skate with her because I didn’t want to risk falling. (Wasn’t taking any chances of ⬇️🧊) An employee was very compassionate about my loss and tried to offer me a seal that was turned in later but it was close to the end of the session by then. She was genuinely sorry for my situation and it’s why I still gave a 5-star rating. Customer service trumps everything in my book. I wish I had asked her name so I could credit her.

So what was supposed to be a day of me iceskating with my daughters ended up being me watching from the sidelines all because I had no sure way of knowing which seal I paid for 😔

Please figure out a better way to manage and identify the seals. It wouldn’t be that big of a deal if they were free, but at $5 per seal, it is a big deal. (I wasn’t trying to rhyme, it just happened) ☺️ A numbered system or something similar would have allowed me to properly identify the little 🐬 that belonged to me.

Horrible customer service. My daughter originally tried the gymnastics class and did not like it. They then called me
and said they wanted her to like it and I told him she wanted more of a cheer class, they offered for her to go the cheer class tonight. When we walked in we asked the lady at the front desk where the cheer class was, and stayed I don't know go and look, and when we went to the gymnasium to look we walked around and there were several classes going on. We saw an instructor that had a cheer t-shirt on and assume this was the teacher in front of the class, she was talking to somebody else and we patiently waited and then she kept looking at us, knowing that we were waiting to speak to her. Also the other teacher in the class was looking at us but nobody asked us what we were waiting for. She walked away from us and never acknowledged us even though we were standing in front of her waiting for her. My daughter missed the first 15 minutes of the class. She was so upset , and then we went to front desk to demand a refund and cancellation and the lady at the front desk that kept telling us I don't know suddenly states she would help us after missing almost thirty minutes of the class. My daughter was so upset, we will never go back.

★ 1

Terrible customer service, and coming from someone who has worked in retail/customer service for over 10 years.

1/2 experiences: Upon thinking that I registered for a class, turns out it was only registration for a trial class even though my billing and payment info was required, so my child wasn't on the roster. When we arrived, nobody could answer any questions clearly about who the instructor was going to be, where my child should go, etc. Everyone kept answering by saying either "I don't know" or "you'll have to ask so and so", it was very chaotic.

2/2 experience: I tried to cancel my daughter's classes since we won't be here for the summer and it was miscommunicated verbally to me that "I could drop at any time", but turns out you have to drop the month prior. But when I asked if I could then drop June, since we apparently are locked into May, the woman on the phone said no, we are also locked into June. This makes no sense because she kept repeating that per the contract it's the month prior, yet, as of May 8th, isn't that the month prior to June?
It's so vague but rigid, and nobody at this facility can answer simple questions like who the class teacher is, it almost feels like a scam to collect money.

*Update: Stephanie, the director, called and said they will allow us to drop June without payment, which I appreciate. But the way it was worded now, verbally, was "you would submit a drop notice for the month after the following month."

So you have to cancel 2 months in advance at all times? Who's making these policies? Do they have young children or young family members? Empathy is lacking. Schedules and plans can be unpredictable at times, and I understand paying for the month and then adhering to that months classes (ex: YMCA), but 2 months in advance you're locked in financially? And not even an option to pause or push those months out like we had originally wanted to do?

I would not recommend enrolling lessons in this facility. We've had 100x better experience last winter at the Bulldog Park with their Learn to Skate program.

The pizza? Probably the best in the area.
The workers? Well mannered and attentive even when extremely stressed/ busy.
The golf? Well... depends if you notice the swing scanner box under the bench is aligned properly. We rented 3 hrs: couldn't get logged in for almost 20mins, frustrated with shot alignments for over an hour, then realized the box was crooked 😡 after aligning the box, we were finally playing golf with a respectable accuracy.
In the end... it's probably the best location for simulator golf in the area.

Please beware about this location and their open gym policies.

My daughter has been here multiple times and never has had one word said to her. She wears her hair in an afro style that is short and close to her head. The lady who is in charge of the Friday night open gym stopped her after being here for almost a hour to tell her that she needed a hair tie and that couldn't participate anymore. (Mind you that my daughter sat right next to the lady when open gym started and the lady was telling everyone the rules.....no words were ever said to her.) My daughter immediately started crying. I went and spoke with the lady. The lady went as far to tell me what comb and products to buy for my daughter. (shocking right?) She told me this was a new policy and how it was posted near the door. You can see in the picture that there is no policy about having a hair tie. She came over and spoke with me and I asked her to show me which policy number stated the hair tie. She was dumbfounded why it was not on there even though this was the newest printed one. Look on the website....it isn't a listed policy on there either. In fact there website still shows that everyone is supposed to be wearing a mask.

There was also a special needs student here. This same lady went over and put the special needs student in a hair tie. How can she touch other people's children like that? She even put a USED HAIR TIE on this child.

These children deserve better than what this lady is doing and saying to them. The front desk people are also not the most professional in how they talk to kids or their parents. Overall it just is not a pleasant experience.

I would also like to add that in multiple times of being there, they have allowed an older guy to wear skin tight boxers on with no shorts over them. Very inappropriate around young children.

We will be trying the Crown Point location and you should too.

This was by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. The manager at the Crown Point location is condescending and rude. I’m so embarrassed for this company and who they have running the show. It’s completely inappropriate to speak to customers the way she spoke to me. I was asking her for clarification on some guidelines and she spoke to me like I was a child. I’ve heard terrible things about the crown point location but I gave them the benefit of the doubt so to convenience, that was a mistake unfortunately.

Be careful with these guys, read ALL the fine print on ANYTHING they give you to sign or initial. Their business practices are while legal are shady and predatory. WATCH OUT!!! They require you pay 2 months tuition past the time you quit. They'll send you to collections if you don't pay that last 2 months plus you're on the hook for collection costs. They also steal your fundraiser money when you decide to leave their gym too.

Do not play Blackbirds teams!
During this season we played several Blackbirds PeeWee level teams. Parents' and kids' attitudes are terrible.
One of the teams we played earlier in the season, dads were yelling to their kids, basically to take to down our kids, swearing, etc.
Our team happened to play one of the Blackbird's teams during a recent tournament again. Besides that the parents were getting into fights with each other, their kids were trying to start a fight with our kids on the ice during the game and off the ice after the game; kids were flipping fingers at the opponent team's parents, swearing. Parents were using a COWBELL!! Trashy behavior!
After the game, the referees had enough of the parent's behavior since one of the ref was yelling at the woman that he will report her, and told her to leave the building.
After the game, I spoke with the dads starting with congratulating them on the win and mentioning that this type of behavior from their kids should not be allowed. Instead of simply apologizing, I was told that " it's hockey, it's ok". Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
NO! Such behavior is NOT normal at this level! What to expect from the kids if their parents their best example.
The team we played during a tournament should have been disqualified!
BTW. Parents! You never know who is seating next to you, and who is watching your kids. With this type of behavior, they will not make it to juniors! You will not find a manager to represent them. This is the feedback I will be giving everywhere about your teams.

I went in and one of the workers asked me to show her my wristband. I showed her and then she said that I had the wrong one when I just bought it hours before. I then was kicked out for "having the wrong wristband" So I had to wait for my sister outside in the cold bc I got kicked out for no reason. First time open gym with our girls. We take them to pattis all American and they do not offer open gym. We recently moved to the area and paid the $10 for 8pm-10pm (which is late as is). My daughter came to the bleachers to get a drink of water. My daughter hopped over the short wall to get back in and got kicked out. No warning- just a “you’re done no refunds.” This is after they wasted 10 mins for their rules and regulations. There was so much confusion and so many kids that it wasn’t organized at all. My husband tried to reason with the lady that she would never do it again...she was just following suit of other kids. Anyways, just a big establishment with no personal attention. Stay away if you want a place that is willing to work with you! Very obvious they only care about $$

I love the place but the coach (Daylan) is not teaching the students how to tumble instead he is making them condition half the time and I don’t think I signed my daughter up just to condition, the coach is always on his phone or scolding at them. I highly do t recommend this coach because I don’t think you want you child to be scolded at and do 25 minutes conditioning by your self while everyone stares at you. Midwest If you see this please consider giving Daylan a brake. Thank you!

i went in there to get a nice serving of cheese fries. i waited 20 minutes for them to tell me that the grill is off and they wouldn’t be cooking anymore. i sat there for 20 minutes and the girl working would look at me right before she helped another kid before she asked what i was waiting for. i am very disappointed.

Michelle who heads the cheerleading program is absolutely amazing. She’s always willing to go above and beyond and her knowledge and coaching skills are the best in the area. The gym is always very clean and organized. All the coaches I’ve encountered (gymnastics, hockey, cheer), have always been focused on endurance, skill advancement and fun. Couldn’t be happier.

Nice facility but I will never go back again. I have never had a front desk worker be SO rude to me (and my young siblings) in my entire life. Don't know her name but the girl with long blonde hair was incredibly rude and hostile with every word she said, and snatched the sign-in papers out of my hand while I was signing all of us in. Advice: give employees very basic training in hospitality and general common courtesy.

My mom fell on her head there and the employees didn’t do anything. Would not recommend!! Also, they don’t clean the ice very well so it’s all slippery and chalky. Definitely not worth it.😠😠

Great family facility! Open gym is an awesome places for my kids on a Friday night! Keeps my kids out of trouble and coaches keep watch during that time, keeping them safe! Can’t beat the Pascal’s pizza either, so good! What a great place to have in town for the kids.

Really like going here , rat hockey and open skate but ! The ice schedule is way too tight ! Every bad review on here is mainly about the gym side get rid of it ! Move it to crown point where it belongs u have lost a lot of business catering to high school hockey , open both ice rinks and spread the schedule out and watch the people come in ! Valpo and now crown point u can skate all day and they are packed ! Even in the cold u guys would dominate with 2 rinks . I know money talks but bad reviews will kill a business

Don’t take your kids there unless you want them simply to jump or walk like robots. They claim that this place is for kids but kids are not allowed to be kids. My child was horsing playing with his buddies and was thrown out after his first offense. No one got hurt, no one was injured but I guess they were tired! No warning, no time out...his buddies were thrown out because they were observing and laughing. Ridiculous...if you are going to attempt to entertain kids then you should have people working for you that have patience. I attempted to discuss with a mgr to no avail. We will take our entertainment funds elsewhere! This business has no business working with kids. Disappointing and frustrating!😡

Excellent facility. Ice hockey, gymnastics, workout gym, and even has it's own pizzaria. Best rink food.

The only reason why I gave one star was because the coach was awesome!!! The facility itself is a HUGE scam! Money hungry people which is the worst type of business you could be! They over charged us two months in a row and charged us a late fee when we were on auto pay in the first place. They put my daughter and the rest of the kids at the facility automatically into a “showcase” and charges you for it unless you opt out by a certain date?!?! We canceled my THREE yr old daughters membership because she didn't want to do it anymore and because I didn’t give notice by the end of August they will still charge for Sept AND October...”because it’s in the contract”. So we payed for two months of gymnastics for nothing. The People at the front desk are extremely rude as well. Will never come back here!!!

During the week, the ice quality during free skate was great. However, the ice on the past 3 Fridays during free skate was terrible. Large groves and divets missing everywhere on the ice. Not a single circle intact to work on any skills. When I asked the manager if they would start using the zamboni before free skate on Friday he said they did. The quality of the ice said they definitely did not.

Out of control hockey players! Staff doesn't seem to care that fighting goes on!! I understand that hockey is intense, but that should be kept on the ice. The last time I was there a 16 year old minor got into a fight in the middle of the lobby with another player. The same 16 year old than got in a fight right outside the front doors. A preschooler was hurt in the process of his tantrum. By the second fight they chose to call the police. I was absolutely disgusted by the minors behavior, the behavior of the family, and more disturbed how the employees handled the situation. The police should have been called out the first time the minor fought in the lobby. He should have been arrested right then and there. After the second fight I heard the Midwest Training and Ice Center Staff tell the 16 year old hockey player that she was trying not to get him suspended from the team. This kid not only should be suspended from the team but banned from using the facility. The staff apparently did not care about all the safety of the children and family that were using their facility. I am sure they are only worried about the money they make off the hockey players.

Classes are good but out of control hockey kids ruin it for everyone. My daughter takes skating classes but it is difficult to watch and hard for the skaters to concentrate. The parents and staff let the kids from hockey run amuck.

Edit: Downgraded my review to one star. Out of control hockey kids again and when I attempt to talk to the parent his wonderful parenting is telling me to go F**k myself. I talked to the coach and the manager. The coach talked to the parent but then said he has no control over them. The manager's only response was sorry. The kids were roughhousing and almost hit me and my daughter and they bashed into a display case, luckily it didn't break. How about holding the parents and kids responsible and suspend them when behavior like this happens?

Edit 10/28/17: After reading my review, a representative contacted me. Since our discussion there have been zero issues. Kids are not running around out of control and you can actually watch and enjoy your children participating in class. Great job on the follow up, I hope this lasts.

My children attended classes almost 1 yr. They didn't like it and stopped. They attended final classes last week of February. They have continued to try and bill me for classes and we are going into June witch they also want payment for. I have sent in written notice of the drop on more then one occasion. I have also verbally told them. They charged my account without authorization. As well as kept my card on file in a notebook! Not even a secure form of keeping credit info on file. I never had any issues other then now with them but this is enough for me to say stay away!

Tumbling and gymnastics are great but I would NEVER do the cheer! The coaches only listen to certain parents usually the ones who never attend practice but want a voice. Attendance for practice is not enforced, coaches are at best average, and the price does not match what the girls should be able to do.

Midwest has been a great experience for my children as well as myself. The kids love to go to gymnastics and one of my children play hockey there. They didn't enjoy gymnastics at the old place we went to but we went to Midwest and tried a class for FREE!! I couldn't believe how big the gym was and the ice arena was amazing. The helpful staff is always a pleasure for me and my wife to speak to about anything we have concerns about. On Saturday nights we often attend the cosmic skate with the family and have a blast on the ice. I would recommend them to anyone. They have a Cafe inside the complex that makes it easy to get food on days that I am there with the kids. I don't know what I'd do without Midwest Training and Ice Center for my children.I do the adult hockey league in my spare time. It's a great way for even me to get out there and have some fun. It's a great place to be and the people are always friendly.

What a great facility, been going there for a few years know for gymnastics classes, and my girls love it. Their professional trained gymnastic coaches are absolutely amazing. We have recently added another day of classes a week and the progression they have made with two days a week is just incredible, and girls cannot wait for Friday night Open Gym every week either, supervision and they can practice they skills while I run to the store couldn't be better! Couldn't ask for a greater gymnastic program. Thank you Midwest Training and Ice.
