The Monon Community Center is a great gym with numerous facilities such as two pools, a spacious weightlifting area, a track, basketball courts, the Monon trail, a seasonally open waterpark, and even a Kid-Zone to drop off children if needed. Really well kept and clean, the workers are all so welcoming and eager to help. Super friendly to all ages! I will say that it can get really busy, with several people waiting on one machine or waiting on lanes at the pool, but as long as you are willing to wait a bit, it is totally worth it!

Our family had been members since opening day and initially loved it. Over the years, the customer service has severely deteriorated. A recent unnerving experience with management just tipped the scale. It makes me really sad to write this because we’ve had many wonderful memories here but the staff is unkind and unprofessional. Additionally, they persistently ignore safety issues raised about equipment. So after 18 years of membership we decided to leave. It’s not worth the disrespect and there are better gyms. Invest your money and time elsewhere.

Great facility across the board. Except for the gym…. It clearly was designed by someone who has never lifted weights a day in their life. The equipment, design, and layout is horrific for such a nice overarching facility.

It's simply too crowded and busy to be able to do any meaningful workout. The weight training area with both free weights and machines is overrun with people. Either membership rates need to increase or the community center needs to expand the resistance training area to be larger with more machines. The crowding as it is right now is unsustainable to allow for a good experience as a member. I'd recommend people looking elsewhere if you're concerned about maintaining a proper routine without too much frustration.

Center has become way, way too busy for me.....terminated my membership a couple of months ago because unless you go at 8:00 PM, parking, getting on equipment or even walking is a major nuisance...... sad, but in the spirit of candor, this place is not the same place. I get it, the have a budget, but it is nuts at times.

Cons: Terrible design of the building. Parking is a NIGHTMARE. Weight room is worse than planet fitness. Vending machines are typically 20% stocked.

Pros: Free childcare for up to 2hrs.

The facility is amazing, unless you spend your time in the weightroom. The pool, courts, fitness classes, lockerrooms, pretty much everything but the weightroom is top of the line. The weightroom's layout is very poor, wasted space, Matrix equipment is hotel quality, complete lack of enough machines for a gym this size. Free weight area is almost OK. Needs more benches, plate loaded machines, and reorganizing. It just doesn't seem like it was designed by anyone that has spent time in a real weightroom.

I used my active&fit direct program and once I found out that this gym was available with the program, I mainly used this gym. Mostly because of the amenities included, pool, free weights, and after I could skate towards downtown Carmel. A really great place to go!

As Carmel residents we love the Monon Community Center and especially love the use of The Waterpark. Had our first visit of summer 2024 & didn’t love some things. Upon arrival at 11:15am, 99% of all lawn chairs/furniture had towels or were being saved in some fashion. So here I was with three kids and no where to sit. But countless people had items on chairs NOT utilizing them. It’s going to cause a problem when someone decides to throw someone’s things off a chair and just take it. Guest perspective if you will.
Concessions were kinda gross. Staff was kinda dry and some of them really need to work on their interpersonal skills. Like saying hello…or even, what can we get for you? Anything.
You might consider additional security to back entry parking lots and perhaps an officer that walks the perimeter. I didn’t enjoy seeing multiple vehicles and groups of people hiding to smoke weed. They need to do that at home cause it’s not for my kids eyes or noses.
Lifeguards, water safety and pool quality is always superb.

Horrible communication on water park hours. Already questionable policy to close bc the weather MIGHT be bad hours later but regardless it would take less than 5 minutes to update the status of the water park literally anywhere online (not on website, Facebook, etc).

A comprehensive review of the MCC facilities (Updated March 2024, 5 months of membership):

Overall, I am satisfied with the membership, but there is a ton of room for improvement with the MCC. I have experimented by going at different times of the day on each day of the week to find the optimal times for equipment availability. If you have the flexibility to go at unusual times (very early AM or just before close), working out at the MCC is very enjoyable. On the other hand, peak times (late mornings and weekdays 4-7pm) can be unbearable. Specifically Mondays are a madhouse because of the bro split.

Specifically in reference to the weights area of the gym, availability is a huge issue. If you are following a program and want to use specific equipment during those peak times, you may find yourself waiting anywhere from 2-10 minutes for a machine to free up. I regularly see people just sit on the nearest machine and occupy, but not utilize it, so they can jump on a machine when it opens.

The other big problem I have here is the frequency of kids in the gym. Particularly between 3-5pm, there is a large amount of kids. I understand it’s a community center available to all residents, that is not the issue. The kids come in large groups (3-5) and are collectively entitled. The biggest issue with this entitlement is the standing around. These groups will crowd a certain machine (often the limited cable machines or the squat racks). Then, they proceed to do a set maybe every 2 minutes, simply chatting while standing around the machine and not actually using it. You will often find these groups wearing pajama pants for some reason.

While sharing the facilities with kids aged 13-18 is not a concern for me, I feel that people in this age range (i.e. not adults) should be required to take a safety and etiquette session before being granted membership.

To be complete, the majority of MCC members are very courteous and will ask if you’re finished with a machine, how many sets you have left, etc. Better yet, most will simply not get in your way at all. I have yet to feel uncomfortable working out here like I have at other gyms in the past.

Suggestions to address issues: There is lots of square footage at the MCC which could be used for additional free weights. There is an urgent need for greater quantity of commonly used dumbbells (10-50 lb) and barbell weights (5-35 lb). As a suggestion to the MCC, the upstairs classrooms are almost always empty when the weight room is at peak demand in the evenings. Those rooms should be configured as dual-purpose rooms such that they are open-use free weights rooms when there is no class in session. There is clearly greater demand for additional weights than class sessions. By reading previous reviews, it is apparent that weight availability is an issue which has gone unaddressed for quite a long time.

Lastly, much of the standard issue equipment is aging and worn with maintenance lacking. Many of the fixed weight machines have broken set pins, two of three reclining benches have loose pins and wobble when positioned upright, many often used dumbbells lack knurling and are borderline smooth, which is arguably a safety concern.

This may seem a quite critical review, and it is, but I am happy overall. For the price it is (currently $49/month), it is a much better deal than a less busy (and/or larger) gym facility such as PF.

The indoor track is nice for non-stationary running in the cold. I have yet to see it so busy that it’s unusable. I enjoy having this available.

I cannot comment to the pools, courts, or classes, as I have not utilized them. I would love to play pickleball there in the winter, but the open pickleball times are obscure and when I have checked them out, there were ~30 people waiting to rotate in on only 3 courts.

Cleanliness: 5-star
When busy: 3-star
When not busy: 5-star
Quality of equipment: 3.5-star
Quality of co-members: 4-stars
Overall: 4 stars

I will update my review with time, as I plan to continue my membership there. Hope to see the facilities improve.

I like this gym a lot, but there is a lot of bad gym etiquette. Plated weights are always scattered to different machines and always have to go looking around just to be able to work out. I’d really like to see employees taking the time once or twice a day to distribute plates to machines to compensate for people’s poor gym etiquette. And also put up signs or something to help people remember to put weights back when finished.

I’ve been coming here for a year. My child loves the kid place. People in the kid place are great. However I had got a new card so my membership didn’t go through. I had to wait on my new card to come in so I came in and some nice guy named Chris gave me a receipt said I was good to come in all week and use the $30 towards my membership. I came in the next day and tried to bring my baby in she is only 3 super excited for the kid zone as always. This older guy named Mike said the information wasn’t accurate. I tried giving him my receipt. He said no leaving my toddler crying and dissapointed. I nicely asked for his full name and Preston jumped in and said we aren’t doing all of that. I said I can’t have his full name. He said no. But I can buy a membership. I don’t if he was racist but the way he handled me was extremely uncalled for and super disrespectful.

Not enough weights to be called a real gym. A lot of wasted space, tons of rooms with empty classes and a seating area but only one machine per muscle group, 2 bench presses, and only one cable machine/rack so you spend a lot of your workout waiting or fighting for a spot.

The activity pool is great when all aspects are open but lately the slides have been closed due to lack of guards. This is the part the kids really want to use so it is very upsetting to get there and find the slides closed. Seems to happen a lot lately.

This is a super clean facility. I always go to hoop. So, 3 full basketball courts is LOVE. Fitness center is solid w/ more than enough to build whatever area of yourself. Pools. A LONG walk/run/bike path. I have checked the locker rooms if there is a sauna or steam room yet, but that would make this one of the best gyms I’ve been to, in my opinionβ€ΌοΈπŸ‘πŸ½πŸŒŸ

Pros: The Water Park being included in your membership is wonderful. Sauna in the locker room is great. Kids Zone staff are lovely.

Cons: Fitness Center needs a deep clean, machines are very dirty. Need to invest in new stretching mats, they are falling apart and gross. Fitness staff are not knowledgeable when it comes to hot to report issues. Several free weight machines and cable lay are not smooth and when mentioned to the staff they just looked up from their phone and said okay.

My two Elementary school aged daughters and I went on an extremely busy Saturday. It took 2 1/2 hours standing in line just to get into the facility. While in line there was out of control line jumping by teenaged kids and when voiced by at least 3 people, nothing was done about it and people were taunted by teenagers for saying anything to on duty law "enforcement". The facility was ok.

I really love coming here. The price for what you get is fantastic. Some things could use an update like the first floor locker rooms yes etc. I should also highlight that this facilities has consistently won awards for accessibility. What other gym is out here doing that??? It feels very inclusive for all bodies. Fantastic staff, the group fitness classes are amazing, and overall other gym goers are friendly.. But yall really complaining when what you want is 100 per month at other places. The entitlement of some of these reviewers! BTW Carmel residents, the Monon is self funded now, it hasn't used tax revenue since 2007. It's literally a FAQ on their website. Do your research before you complain.

I love this place. It’s been a really cost effective way to attend various fitness group classes and also have access to a gym and all the other amenities. It’s generally really clean and yes- busy. But generally speaking the times of day I go to use it, it’s starting to wind down. But there are definitely days you’d think the circus was in town. Waterpark is a lot of fun too, just wish they were open past the first week of August. I know it’s hard to staff the place after kids go back to school, but it would be nice to be able to use the park while it isn’t chocked full of said kids every day lol Oh well.

The facility is fine but we have had a poor experience with the employees in the fitness area. To the extent my husband was working out with a few buddies and an employee came up and attempted to start a fight while degrading veterans. Despite numerous people submitting reports on what happened, management has done nothing to address this treatment and continues to support an unsafe environment. Unfortunately we (and all those we have referred) will have to look for another place as this is not acceptable. I would expect a community center to have higher standards.

We went to the indoor kids pool play area. This past week it’s been in the 20s, but the pool was absolutely freezing. We saw several young kids getting out shortly after getting in the pool with purple lips and shivers. This isn’t a lap pool. These are young children and families. The air in the pool area seemed more like the air conditioner was on or something.

The woman's showers are so outdated and gross, crud and mildew, like prison showers but with less water pressure. The maximum capacity numbers for the pool should be cut in half, that is way too many people for the pool to be enjoyable. 80% of people have to sit on the concrete because the capacity numbers are outrages the entire summer, completely packed. There is no hot tub. There's no sauna. There's no military discounts, no student discounts. For $50 a month, I felt disappointed.

Would it be possible for management to think outside the box, just a little? $26 for my wife and I to sit at a table and watch our boys swim on a Saturday afternoon during the cold Indiana winter seems excessive to me. I get that it is β€œall inclusive” as well as keeping track of people entering the facility. But what about people who just want to read a book while their kids have fun? It’s about the principal more than anything. The same reason I don’t use another bank’s ATM to avoid the $3 surcharge.

I used to go there regularly but stopped after the pandemic. I had a punch card with 6 times left. When i finally went back, the front desk guy told me the card was expired. I explained that i couldn't come here because of Covid, but he insisted that the gym was reopened before the expiration day. It took a lot to make the decision to go back the gym, now look at how terrible they treat their customers. Facilities are pretty good, but the customer service is not on par.

My wife and I purchased a property here in Carmel and have spent a considerable amount of money taking care of it not to mention the property tax dollars that we have spent on it which brings me to this check in point and the way I was treated.

I walked about two miles from our property where we are currently having some work done. Up to this center. I needed to use the restroom, came into the building and was politely given the directions that public restrooms were out the front door, turn right and they are right across from the Waterpark. I left the build and walked BACK to the Waterpark and the only thing across from the park were some flowering bushes!

I continued past the Waterpark and found out that the restrooms were adjacent to the park, oh and by the way they were LOCKED!

I went back to were I got my "misdirections" they finally let me use the restrooms in the building only after explaining there policies which with COVID-19 i understand, and telling me that there were restrooms all along the walking trail. But its only after I explained i needed a restrooms otherwise I might be making a mess. Last I really did appreciate them coming to the restroom to check on me. If this us how I'm going to be treated NO THANKS! I will not be coming back here again and I found this experience insulting humiliating!

Skatepark should be redesigned. Overall great place to work out and have fun. Water park is awesome. I skateboard mostly and ... a lot of people at the skate park say that it should be larger/redesigned. More grind boxes, rails, and parking curbs would be nice to have (especially for beginners). The bowl is quite hard to pump in and is really uncomfortable to run over a drain. If one day someone wants to redesign it, have an experienced skateboarder design it though I am fortunate to have a skate park close near me! :)

I arrived at the weightlifting center, eager to experience a stimulating workout to help germinate rippling musculature but made a mistake by going into the men's locker room. As I approached, I didn't think much, assuming it was like a normal locker room, a place to change, shower, and release human waste. I opened the door and was met with a man, about 60 years old who was fully naked and standing in the open, staring at me with a diabolical stare emerging from his dilated pupils. I attempted to ignore him, looking down but he called for me, telling me that he was locked out of his own locker and was unable to retrieve his clothes. He wanted me to get a monon worker to unlock the locker for him. I complied, walking to the weightlifting desk where I expected an employee to be. To my amazement, nobody was there so I had to walk to another desk, which took about another minute. I told one of the workers, who seemed to suffer from social anxiety as he didn't seem to maintain eye contact with me and also had poor posture, possible rupturing his spine and damaging his thoracolumbar fascia if he were to maintain that posture chronically. I lead the man up the stairs to the gym, feeling awkward on the way up as he made no effort to initiate any conversation and walked very slowly. I lead him to the scene of the accident which luckily he was able to solve quite easily so I went on with the rest of my day and headed to the sinks. I arrived at the sinks as a horrendous stench began to permeate my nostrils, which smelled like a mixture of rotten rectal discharge mixed with severe body odor. I started to feel a bit dizzy, but pushed through it as I headed to the urinal. I wait to use a urinal as a fully naked man begins to start shaking frantically at the urinal, moving his hand quickly back and forth. I'm not sure if he was attempted to pleasure himself or dry himself but I decided to go use the stall instead. I entered the stall and the protruding smell starts to get worse, and I shift my view to the toilet where a heaping pile of feces sat, half of which was not even in the toilet and was piling over the edges. At this point I was not very surprised but was immensely disgusted and dissatisfied with my experience so far. I found one of the janitors who luckily said he would clean it up but felt sorry for him as that would be very difficult to clean up. As for the man who made the mess, hopefully he would see a gastroenterologist . I left the locker room, happy to be able to get out of that place. I entered the weightlifting area, which was very crowded but was luckily able to get on the leg press machine. Two forty five pound plates were already present on both sides but I needed more so I grabbed one and put it on one side but as I went to grab another one a teenage girl grabs the forty five on the leg press and takes it to deadlift. I approached her, already in a poor mood, and told her that I was using that. She acted surprised and sassy and even made me take the weight back from her. She seemed to assume I wouldn't be strong enough to lift the weight I put on. While I leg pressed she kept staring at me, but tried to hide it and she did not do that too well. After I finished leg press, I went to squat and after I warmed up I loaded three 300 total on the bar. The whole gym seemed to stare at me, like I was some kind of celebrity. I was not sure if they had never seen someone squat 300 pounds or if they were just obsessed with my physique. Either way, it was a bit distracting but fortunately didn't harm my workout. I finished squat and arrived at the hamstring curl machine. While curling, I was unwillingly forced to listen to a conversation between a seventy year old man and a twenty year old man discuss their sexual desires with women. The old man was obsessed with fat women, and even discussed the aftermath, such as rectal seepage which didn't sound too pleasant. I finished my workout and left, feeling dissatisfied but also entertained. I will contemplate whether buying a membership or not in the future.

Had a wonderful time at the Monon pools area. There are slides, rock climbing, lots of little children areas, and a lazy river! The staff is very kind and upholds safety seriously. They have discount prices after 5pm on certain days which are a great deal!

Decent equipment, friendly staff, and a fairly laid back environment. Not a huge area for lifting, but plenty of machines for assisted lifts and cardio.

Took my autistic non verbal kid the water park yesterday, during the 15 minutes break, my son was at the slide when they announced that everyone should be out of the pool. Guard yield at him and let him get down, had trouble to follow direction as normal kid , he started to be aggressive toward the guard. Kept explaining that he has Autism and he needs more time to comply with the instruction but he did not understand. Brought a team lead an explain that he did not know that my son has autism. people with disabilities live among the community and guard/ staff need to be aware of that and be trained on how to treat them with respect.

Carmel can really be proud of this recreational facility plus the surrounding park. How many rec centers have exercise equipment, swimming, basketball courts, dance classes, and great trails to walk surrounded by nature. You can go fishing also! Plus lots more.

Great place. We go a lot. Water park is very nice but lots of people come in from all over, which can crowd the park quite a bit at times. Indoor facility is excellent. Weight room is good but only two free weight bench presses that seem to always be taken. Not enough for the demand. Not many plate loaded machines...more cable driven. Still a good place to work out. LOTS of bikes, treadmills, and ellipticals.

It is a nice facility but their personal trainers aren't the best and the KidZone hours completely black out afternoon workouts or group classes/events. Staff is hit and miss. Some are helpful and others are either clueless or to busy to answer questions.

The outdoor pool area is nice but my 4 yr old daughter put her foot in a jet of water on the kids slide area. Some of the water splashed the life guard at the kids slide. Then she yelled at my daughter and brought her to tears. When I confronted the life guard she yelled at me and was extremely rude all because she got water on her in the kids area. When I asked to speak with a manager I was told she was probably just being grouchy because the water is cold. Nothing was done and I will never go back to that pool again. Why are you a lifeguard if getting wet makes you scream at little kids? There are other pools with nicer staff.

Great Gym and facilities, great outdoor pool, BUT...
Getting more and more overcrowded year after year to the extent you can’t enjoy these things.

Please expand or open additional locations. Nice job not escalating prices to address overcrowding though!

This place has essentially every type of exercising available except for some water sports, though it still has a pool. The membership is necessary for recurrent trips. Inside there's an entire room of treadmills, ellipticals, cycling, weights, and other machines. There's a gym with a 200m track on the second floor. Also it connects with the Monon trail, which is pretty good for outside running/walking

Carmel has a great community center. Lap pool for the adults, a big pool for kids with a beach like entry; even two water slides.

Basketball, racquetball, jogging track, exercise equipment/weights. Nothing is left out.

Outside they have a really good playground, and impressive splash park to cool off in the summer.

Lots of classes and group activities. Really a great facility to take advantage of. It's extra nice since the renovations are complete.
