I used to be a member of NIFS for more than a decade. I really liked this gym because of their indoor track, but left due to non-member track teams taking over the track and literally running members down. I left for several years and decided to stop by member services to see if anything had changed. I specifically asked about track teams and was assured by member services that they no longer had “track kids” having team practices there anymore. She stated she was on the iupui track team and that she knew for a fact the middle school and high school track teams were no longer aloud to practice there. I reiterated that I did not want to join if they still practiced there and she again assured me that they were no longer there. Based on her feedback, we decided to sign up for a family membership. Although we opened a family membership, we were made to sign up separately and both had to pay
Separate membership fees. We attended for our first visit and all went well. We did notice, however, how run down the gym was compared to
When we were last members ; lockers broken, old rundown equipment, and it was so crowded it was hard to find space to workout and to even find available machines. On Our second and third visit to the gym, we found the track littered with middle and high school track teams taking over the track for their practices. I honestly felt lied to, but gave it a go. These kids continued to run into members, slamming their shoulders into others using the track and laying on the track to spread out and do their stretches. I cancelled my membership after only attending three times. I reached out to Lisa, a manager in membership services, left her a message and never heard back. I contacted member services to cancel and ask for my membership fee back and explained how I was lied to after specifically asking about the track kids and was told I could not have a refund after only going three times. Although I have reached out to management … I never heard back from a single person . If you are looking for a well run, upscale, clean, honest place to workout … this is not that place. This once, well respected gym has become a run down side kick for the local college campus students. If you don’t believe me, go
Look for yourself. I’m confident you will not disagree with me.

Holy crap, this gym closes at 9pm mon-thurs and 5pm Fri-Sun! Terrible hours. They also close for every (every) holiday (the before, the day of, and the day after). They close if it snows and if it rains real hard.

Fantastic facility.

They're always updating their equipment. Lots of different areas to lift. Basketball court is the old pacers basketball court. Highly recommend.

I've been going to NIFS for a while, and while the facility has its advantages, it's extremely busy most of the time. If you can go during non-peak hours, it might work better for you, but even lunchtime can get crowded. It seems that a super flexible schedule is needed if you want to avoid the crowds, which might not be realistic for everyone. Additionally, I was surprised to find they don’t have some basic equipment like adductors or abductors, which feels like a gap in an otherwise well-equipped gym. For now, it’s the only gym that’s convenient for me location-wise, so I’ll keep coming, but it wouldn’t be my first recommendation unless these issues don’t bother you.

NIFS Has a Lot of Room for Improvement

As a member, I appreciate NIFS' diverse equipment. However, my experiences with the front desk staff have fallen short 0/5.

Strengths:

• Variety of equipment for diverse workouts

Areas for Growth:

• Front desk responsiveness and issue resolution
• Communication and follow-through
• Flexible hours and scheduling

Specific Concerns:

• Repeat payment verification issues (despite previous resolution)
• Unaddressed facility concerns (cockroaches in smaller gym room)
• Team members with apathetic/standoffish attitude (Kevin, Roberto Millan, and Skyler) among others.

Comparison:

Similar gyms offer:

• Comparable equipment and facilities
• More flexible hours
• Better customer service

Recommendation:

To enhance the member experience, NIFS should:

• Invest in staff training for effective communication and issue resolution
• Prioritize proactive facility maintenance
• Improve customer support

As a member, I advise others to exercise caution when considering NIFS, even with student discounts. The subpar customer service and unaddressed facility concerns outweigh the benefits.

I'm skeptical of the 5-star reviews, given multiple comments from others echoing similar customer service issues.

Update: Cancelled membership. Issues remained unaddressed.

Amazing equipment paired with a great track.. for the cheapest membership cost in Indianapolis.. love this place so far. As a track athlete, it’s a big disappointment no spikes are allowed on the surface but I understand they don’t want to resurface the whole thing ($$$). Also, I don’t know how this place was designated the “National” institute but I guess Obama has visited at some point..? Sauna and whirlpool as well. Parking pass included. On the river. Very cool.

Lots of equipment, friendly workers and clean locker rooms. A bonus is the Pacers' old floor from Market Sqaure Arena.

There is a free seven day trial, there are one day fees, memberships and discount for IUPUI students. Speak to the membership lady just before hitting the main/front desk for more info.

Awesome gym, but I do have 2 complaints about this place. One is their hours. They don't open until 5am, and 7am on the weekends. I'm a 4am gym goer and this is the best place in my area, and likely the city, so I'm stuck. For what you get $39.50 is a steal. Full size basketball court, indoor track, outdoor track(which is free to all, but there,) two massive areas for weights, and every machine but my second complaint. They have no adductor or abductor machines. I don't know how there are even girls who go there. ;) but I have hip issues and I need these for strengthening them. Other than this, this place is awesome, and I enjoy going.

Manager guy at front desk killed my desire to workout with his tonality. I'm new to the area and looking for a gym. Tried out VASA fitness and planet fitness and they are both more friendly, and have a better culture. While this gym has alot of equipment, it's not a good atmosphere. I signed up for a 7 day pass and got haggled about my ID being from NW Indiana. I would imagine there is a lot of lost business by turning away people In a large city just because their ID doesn't say indianapolis on it. Will not be back.

If you’re looking for a pool that’s literally never accessible for lap swim this is your place $40 a month will hold down your ability to schedule training sessions two weeks out, not regularly, but if you get lucky here and there you might be able to get a slot. And the assistant director doesn’t even seem to be able to cancel a membership at your request.. thanks Lisa!! Thumbs down for service…

I have been a nifs member since 2006 or 2007. I first became a member when I was a high school student at Indianapolis metropolitan HS and the school provided the membership for us. Then I went to college at IUPUI, and been a member with a discount. Now I work but live around the downtown area, so I continue to be a member there.
Yes, as others said in comments. A lot of things have changed. The gym has downgraded. I think the cause of that is the change of management. There used to be a short hair guy, like 5 feet 5. He used to run the gym and I don't see him anymore in the building.
The treadmills are some cheap craps. If someone over 200 lbs running on there, you would hear an earthquake in the building. Besides that, yeah you do see unprofessional employees, but those are the new workers. Their senior employees are very nice people.
The gym membership used to cost 50 dollars and now went down to 30. But I honestly would pay 50 monthly if nifs can be what it used to be.

I love NIFS they offer a variety of free sessions for yoga, cycling, basic and advanced strength training. Also, they have lots of programs to choose from for weight loss and they explain it in every detail. It's very disappointing that I have to leave this review, I love nifs worth a passion. However today was not a very good day at all. Usually the staff is very nice and friendly but not today. We left nifs and one of the employees rudely and unprofessionally told us that the showers were closed and told us to "get out". I've never had an issue with a employee before here, but this one was a first. Also second because unfortunately another employees was rushing us to get out while we were trying to get out as fast as possible but to him it felt like we were taking forever. Now I understand yes they are closed, but there was no need for the rudness like that. It was probably just this once and maybe it won't happen again. I hope.

After being a guest for two visits, I was pulled aside by the director, and accused of some sort of public indecency. False accusations by a director who took my statement "with a grain of salt" have led me decide not to be a member at this facility I greatly enjoyed in my 20s. It is the world we live in now a days that you are guilty before even being approached about the incident. Would recommend that they put better safe guards in place to protect their patrons and their privacy.

I am a beginner but honestly I really like this gym. It makes you feel comfortable to work out and there’s always help if needed. Cleanliness is on point. As a college student I love coming here before or after classes and it helps that the showers are open to use so I can clean up for class. Overall, 10/10!

I think the facility is okay, the equipment is a bit outdated compared to other gyms. Other gyms have had their basketball court, sauna, pool, locker rooms and spa open for months now and this gym has not opened those features of the gym since the reopening. When you ask the employees about when these amenities are going to come back they say they don’t know. There should be no reason why a date should not be in place for these amenities coming back within the next few months. When really they should have already been back with the vaccine being available for everyone in the state of Indiana for close to a month now and the cases and death rate of the virus being on the decline for several months. I understand precaution although, at this point there should be no reason why none of the employees have a clue to when these amenities will be back and why they aren’t already back. Last but not least, why do I pay full membership price but get close to half of the features of the gym? That’s why they don’t bring it back because they can charge full price without paying for maintenance for the whirlpool, locker room, sauna, steam room and basketball court.

I would like to give this place 4 or 5 stars but I can't. The facilities are very good, and although the layout is a bit odd, you quickly get used to it. The locker room facilities are also very nice and I never had an issue with their cleanliness. My issue comes from the staff. I have never been hagled so much in my life. There is/was an older gentleman trainer there that would constantly sit within 6 feet of my workout partner and myself and watch us like a hawk as we trained. There was also a larger female trainer that at one time yelled at me from across the track to put away gym equipment I wasn't even using. I humored her and put it away, but she yelled at me again for not putting it away in the correct location. I believe all of this was rooted in the fact that the smaller trainer that enjoys kettlebells accused me of using their gym to have people pay me under the table to train them. Yes I was a personal trainer and yes one time I invited one of my clients to workout with me and check out the gym (did not charge her for that). I understand them wanting to ensure people don't do that, but it bothered me they didn't ask me first, they simply assumed and accused. But other than that, I think the price they charge is on the higher side but can be justified if they still offer the parking pass with the membership.

Plenty of cardio equipment that few people use , and not enough equipment that many people use (Treadmills). How about start being a decent gym and purchase a few more new treadmills? How about actually replacing the treadmills that you remove, supposedly for "repair service"? Two treadmills were removed and NOT replaced. Equipment was rearranged to make it seem nothing was changed. A very deceptive practice.

NIFS: “Not Interested In Fixing Stuff” In this picture you can see spaces where TWO treadmills used to be. Well over a year ago these two treadmills broke, NIFS put signs on them saying they would be fixed ASAP. The two machines disappeared never to be seen again. NIFS apparently LIED to members when they said these treadmills would be repaired There is absolutely no excuse for these treadmills to be out of service for over a year!!!!! Fix them or get 2 new ones to replace them!! Currently there are now Two more treadmills out of service. It would not be suprising if these broke treadmills disappear and never reappear!!! At the very least, it will probably take them weeks to repair them Guess NIFS never heard of preventative maintenance for their most used machines, NIFS, you are pathetic!!!!

More like 4.5 stars, but I'll round up. The price is great for non-peak membership and they have everything you'll need. The Freemotion treadmills are also incredibly and the smoothest I've ever used.

Downsides are that Sunday hours end a bit early and it's disappointing to see that there's a fee to rejoin after temporarily stopping membership...

NIFS = “Not Interested In Fixing Stuff”
This is essentially what NIFS stands for. Broken, unmaintained aerobic equipment and lackadaisical staff who are totally uninterested in maintaining and fixing equipment on a timely basis. The 4 relatively new FreeMotion treadmill are a prime example of this. 3 of these These treadmills consistently run poorly, and when people complain, the NIFS staff puts an “Out of Order, repairs will be repaired as soon as possible” sign on them. Signs are consistently posted on some machines weeks or even months at a time. Repairs are sometimes never made, instead, the signs are removed and the machines continue to run like garbage .What is just as bad, if not worse, is when staff are questioned when repairs will be made, they will either say “I don’t Know” or will say repairs will be done by a certain day and naturally, the machines are NOT repaired by that time.

This gym is awesome. Not spanking new like the downtown YMCA at Cityway, but they have every piece of equipment you could ever dream of. The group fitness classes and schedule are great. I especially love the cycle class on Tuesday with Amanda, and the Wednesday night yoga. Boot camp is also great and doesn't charge an extra fee like some other gyms. Same with TRX.

NIFS has a decent amount of weights spread in multiple areas around the gym, in addition to the actual weight room, so there's always plenty of room.

Only downside is that IUPUI's pool isn't included with the membership, although I think the fee isn't too much extra if you want access to the pool as well. The gym has a dry sauna and a hot tub in the locker rooms though.
