It's a fine gym but for one thing. I'm not the only member frustrated by one of the SciFit machines, one of two (the one on the right towards the entrance), that needs repair because it won't track steps which the other one does. It's also weak on calorie counts if it counts them at all. There are only two of these machines so both being in working order is important.

First time visiting the Merrillville location. I really like that it has more room to move around compared to small few locations like Highland which I frequent more. Not all bunch up on top of each other both in the gym and parking lot. Really space was my biggest thing at this location. The machines are alright like most of the other locations. I did not enjoy this locations elliptical machines they did not work well for me and were wobbly. Overall I would come again if I'm ever in the area.

Men's locker room and showers have been going down the very dirty road. I know the showers haven't been cleaned in at least 2 weeks same hair all over the floor of the showers nasty. ....

One of the better planet fitness is in the Chicago land area. Travel frequently for work and usually I don't get this good of quality unless I'm out in the country somewhere. Only recommendation would probably be to change the toilet paper roll holders there was toilet paper when I was in the bathroom but seems like it could easily run out for people. But seems like there's an issue with people using too much toilet paper and clogging the toilets according to signs in the restrooms. Thanks for a good workout while on the road.

Relatively clean, but odd hours Fri-Sun (Sat and Sun only 7-7, Fri closes at 9 pm). During those hours, renovations and movement of equipment take place during open, busy hours (1 pm on a Saturday in this most recent instance). Some of the gym staff is friendly, others are not as you will see at every establishment. Have considered switching gyms multiple times due to the lack of ability to use equipment (due to classes, renovations, how packed it is, etc) and will likely be switching soon to see if there is a better option. If you like cardio, there will always be machines available! As for weight lifting, it is often hard to get ahold of a bench and a dumbbell <30 lbs during busier times.

It has been a year now and the same bikes have been broken over and over again and now 2 mor on the first floor.
Ridiculous.

Love the location however the back stretch exercise area has been closed for quite a while now and no one knows when it will be fixed. Be nice if it could be fixed sometime soon.

This health club is great and very clean however I do have one complaint and that is that the bikes that are located on the upper level and out of order never seemed to get repaired and when you ask staff when they will be repaired the response is my manager will be in tomorrow I don’t know. There are other bikes but I like the upstairs work out area for cardio. There has been a bike out for about 3 weeks now. That is my only complaint as staff is always pleasant.

There were two men who entered the weight section after my aunt and I, both of us are heavier set women. Planet fitness praises itself on being a judgement free zone, however that's not the case at this location. My aunt and I were sitting at benches next to each other. The men came into the are and went the the farthest bench on the left hand side. One man was "spotting" the other. Really, he was standing there carrying a conversation with his friend. I was focusing on my posture and looking in the mirror when the man standing made a reference to a popular song about dogs. He "who who'ed" at his friend after finishing a sentence about "dogs" being in the weight area.

I was uncomfortable after that point but continued to light my dumbbells. Both men made comments about use lifting no more than 20lbs. We both had just began working out a few days prior.. even if we hadn't this behavior isn't what the gym promotes. Shortly after another dog comment, the guy standing pulled out his phone and was facing the mirror instead of his friend that he was "spotting". I stopped lifting and asked my aunt if she wanted to go to another area. She had become as uncomfortable as me in the area and we decided to clean out dumbbells and benches to avoid potentially being recorded and mocked farther. We went to a different area in the gym, near the treadmills, far enough away from the two men so we could notice if we were being filmed.

When we were leaving there was no associate at the desk, so unfortunately this incident went unreported. I called the next day, but there was never a follow up and I didn't/don't know the two men's names.
However this incident left us both feeling uncomfortable, and judged. We will not be returning to this planet fitness anytime in the future. If you're plus size, I suggest visiting a gym.

What is there not to say about this planet fitness. I am a former member of this location, and transferred to a different one after a move, but a great redeeming quality of going back to Merrillville would be this planet fitness. The staff there are great and very friendly right when you come in the door, the people generally do their own thing and not ALWAYS crowded. The summer time gets pretty busy sometimes, but you just have to change up your routine a bit when waiting for a machine. The environment was always perfect, on good days and bad. One of the best features was the upstairs treadmills and various cardio machines; overlooking a great view of route 30! Definitely miss this gym, and the people in it. It felt like a home away from home sometimes. Absolutely recomend.

This is the worst gym to go to.
In December I asked to close my membership because I was moving. I noticed that they kept billing me every month. When I looked at my bill it was over $100 (including late fees). I called and emailed about the issue, I even paid it so they could close it. The guy didn’t close my account he changed the gym membership from $20 to $10. The manager said I had to come back….I AM NOT NEAR YOU GUYS ANYMORE and you keep charging me. Now I have to fly back just to close an account that I ALREADY TRIED TO CLOSE. They don’t care they are just collecting money!!!!
