SS has been absolutely amazing. They worked with my schedule and made adjustments including surrounding my work or personal life - the training has been awesome and I've been making the gains - overall I highly recommend!! I'd give them more than 5 stars if I could!

From the moment I met Andrew at Starting Strength I knew there was something different. So many gyms have personal trainers just looking to add people to a book of business. Not Starting Strength! They actually care about the overall health and wellbeing of the individual. They will design and implement a plan completely catered to your needs and ability. Andrew and Starting Strength are far superior to other locations that claim to be personal trainers.

Had a great experience at the squat and deadlift camp. While the books have been a good resource, there is nothing like getting assistance from a Starting Strength coach. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to get stronger.

Very helpful with my technique. A little bit physically uncomfortable trying it out at first but the reasoning is sound and I can see how you are using more muscle to move more weight and therefore get stronger.

Starting Strength is a great facility for people looking to gain a truly functional foundation! As a functional chiropractor, so much of my day is spent educating people and trying to get them moving their body how it was made to be, and Starting Strength does just that. They are very well educated and apply the basic foundational movements into their exercises to allow for your best quality of life. The 1on1 help you get there makes it almost impossible to be dysfunctional or do anything incorrectly. They guide you through all lifts and motions and make sure everything is done correctly. Would highly recommend and trust them for all your lifting and health needs!

My wife and I have been working out at Starting Strength for the pest five weeks. We’re both in our 60s and realize how important strength training is for an active life as you age. Adam has been coaching us and can’t say enough how much we have enjoyed the workouts. It is so important to have the right technique and Adam is on top of every lift. He’s patient, knowledgeable, supportive, and very encouraging. I particularly like the pacing between sets and the gradual but consistent increase in weight. Whether you’re in your 60’s, 70’s, 80’s or much younger you can definitely benefit from the training. Highly recommend this gym!

My hubby and I started working out with Adam a month ago. We are so happy we did, and so impressed with the coaching. Adam is so patient with us and makes sure we are using proper form, proper rest times, and increasing our weights appropriately so we dont hurt ourselves. My husband was very skeptical because he did not want to work with some cocky young “muscle head” (as he called it..lol). We love the atmosphere of this gym! We thought we would only do it for a month or two, but I think we are hooked and already seeing the results in our everyday tasks! Thank you Adam!!!!

Efficient use of gym, all the equipment you need, but not the extra distractions you don’t!
Great people, instruction and queues are always on point, good music, and fellowship with other lifters.

Needed to get back to the gym and start working on bone density and strength training. Andrew and his team welcomed me with open arms. And there was never any judgement about my lack of ability. It's so nice to be able to get back to the gym and have a trainer watch me to know I am doing it right and not going to hurt myself. Highly recommend everyone here (Andrew, Jacob, Alisa and Adam). Worth the trip! I was looking for some form help on my barbell lifts from someone that knows the Starting Strength methods and Andrew did not disappoint!
Welcoming atmosphere from the moment you walk in. No distractions, nothing silly on the walls, just a room for people to get stronger in.
Andrew listened intently to my concerns and gave the detailed feedback I was looking for on my lifts. I feel much more confident safely moving forward with my training after his feedback.
Everyone was there to lift and support the others in the gym. Awesome vibe to have. A little background music filled the silence but wasn't at a distracting volume.
I'd recommend this place to anyone that wants to get stronger with the support of other like minded individuals and the expertise of some awesome strength coaches!

I have been a client for 18 months and the reason I stay at Starting Strength is because the coaches caring, experience, and attention to detail is unmatched. They ensure the program is run safely and effectively. This has kept me safe from making mistakes in lifting that I would have made on my own.

I’ve had such a great experience training at Starting Strength Indianapolis. Working out with Adam has been both motivating and educational — he takes the time to explain proper technique, pushes you to do your best, and makes sure you’re progressing safely and effectively.

Except for the Taylor Swift songs, this place is dope.
If you're serious about strength training in Indianapolis, Starring Strength is the gym you’ve been looking for. This is not your average commercial fitness center — it’s a barbell-focused strength training facility designed for people who want real results. Whether you're into powerlifting, Olympic lifting, or general barbell training, the programming here is thoughtful, progressive, and rooted in real coaching—not gimmicks.
The owner and coaches are certified strength and conditioning professionals who take the time to tailor workouts for every client. The focus on compound lifts like the squat, deadlift, and bench press has totally changed my perspective on what it means to train effectively.
Located conviently in Indianapolis, this locally owned gym feels like a tight-knit community. It's clean, well-equipped (plenty of racks, calibrated plates, specialty bars), and has an old-school vibe with modern programming. The client base ranges from beginners to competitive lifters, and everyone’s there to improve.
If you're in Indy and looking for a strength gym with personal training, small group coaching, or custom programming, Starting Strength should be your first stop. This place is ideal for anyone tired of generic big-box gyms and ready to train with purpose.

I highly recommend Starting Strength Indy. Our daughter has been working out here for the past 6 months, and the gains she has made are nothing short of impressive. This from a 20-something girl who never lifted a weight in her life before. We visited Indy recently and Andrew and Jacob treated our family to an intro session. Their expertise and instructional skills were second to none. We are so jealous there is no Starting Strength in Milwaukee. If you live in Indy, get yourself to Starting Strength ASAP to transform your body and life!

How do you explain in a google review the way a place and the community has changed your life?
I've never found a community where I felt so accepted, encouraged, valued and STRONG - strong in many different ways.
You get out of your training what you put in, of course. However, you also have your trainers (shoutout to Jacob and Andrew!) who invest everything they can into your growth. I'm grateful for Starting Strength and the people I get to see three times a week. I never "dread" going to the gym. I truly look forward to each workout.
If you're looking for a gym that will invest in you as much as you invest in you, please don't hesitate to at least book an intro session. You truly won't regret it.
I'm a better person now after taking the steps to overcome what was keeping me stagnant. I just can't say enough about this place and the people who keep it going.

You probably don’t want to come here unless you’re ready to change your life. It’s a lot of work/time both in and out of the gym. Ugh. First, you probably need to bring a notepad because Andrew and his team impose on you a boatload of knowledge, and it can feel nearly as heavy as the barbells to process all the information about form and technique, methodology, nutrition, etc. and if you have any bad habits from past lifting or other sports, it’s a challenge. Who wants to do hard things and change your ways?
Next, you have to eat well like your coach says, or your body literally can’t lift anything anymore, so now you have to go through the effort to eat breakfast, and you can’t skip meals due to being busy like you’ve grown accustomed. You learn to trust your coach to protect you from your ego so you don't reinjure/injure yourself. Then you have to focus on recovery at home and you should also probably read a book or few about this whole thing - homework! You’re a student again.
Plus all the lifts are heavy, and they never stop feeling heavy - you just find yourself lifting more and more, so you have to take mandatory rest periods between lifts and you might actually socialize at the gym with some of the best humans you’ll ever meet. Conversations are rarely ever small talk so you slowly find yourself part of a community that you didn’t experience at other gyms. Are you really ready for all that?
Then there are the results - after a while, your cognitive function improves in ways that even your friends notice. Since you’re out of the fog now, you pick up those hobbies and interests you used to enjoy again. You remember those faded parts of you as they shine back up into the vibrancy you forgot about yourself. You find that you slowly kill the part of you that doesn’t believe you can lift this or that, and slowly feed the part of you that believes you can. Now you have higher expectations for yourself as well as the actual belief you can meet those expectations with high quality effort and performance in multiple areas of your life. Daunting.
Because of your new capacity, there’s NO more time in the day, it just slips away from you constantly! You’re exploring with your family and your spouse says , “WOW, you look like you’re doing good; do you feel strong? Because you look strong.” And you only have to worry about how far you hike into the woods so the KIDS have enough ability to get back; not you! You find that you’re becoming so strong, you can volunteer to help people more readily and you can start playing with your kids more actively again. When your kids comment about how you’re fun again, you’re wiping your eyes because you can’t believe how much Starting Strength is changing not only your life, but theirs. You start to envision a different future for your family. Your kids make fun of you for crying. Rude. I thought strength training was supposed to make you tougher! Now that you can roughhouse and adventure again with your family, you do that so much, time just flies by and daily you’re asking where the day went!
Time continues more rapidly and before you know it, you’ve lived a full life with the capability to actually make a difference in the world, your community, and your family in a way you couldn’t before. Exhausting. Are you exhausted? I’m exhausted. And I can’t wait for my next lift session.
*update 6/10/25: been coming here for over two years now and even with absences and injuries elsewhere, coming here is essential to my overall wellbeing and my family’s function. My body doesn’t do well without it, the community is beautiful and and all the coaches are so knowledgeable!

This is the place to go in a clean environment and absolutely terrific knowledgeable coaches. You are never suggested to find your spot and workout on your own. You are prescribed individual workouts. The coach works with you and insists to rest between final heavy sets. I highly recommend Starting Strength to get your individual training. Another point emphasis on strengthening the bones. I had increased my bone density in one year over 7.25%! Kudo’s to Adam & Andrew!

Working with Andrew and Adam has been a key part of my recovery from a herniated disc. Their coaching provided the structure and support I needed to make real progress after a long period of setbacks.
In June 2023, I was driving home from work when I started to feel off. I pulled over, and shortly after, I had a grand mal seizure in my van. In the aftermath, a slipped disc made even the most basic tasks—like getting dressed or taking a shower—a daily challenge.
Over the next year and a half, I went through several types of treatment. While I saw some gradual improvement, it wasn’t until I started training at Starting Strength Indy that I began to see more meaningful and rapid progress.
In just a few months, I’ve tripled the amount of weight I can lift. I’m stronger than I’ve been in years, and I’ve even rediscovered a genuine enjoyment in the training itself.
Adam and Andrew—thank you. Your coaching has made all the difference.
If you’re on the fence about working with a personal trainer or strength coach, this is your sign to go for it. Commit to three months. See what happens. You won’t regret it.

I’ve been following the starting strength program and methods for about 6 months this or so. I love about an hour a way so difficult for me to justify a full monthly membership, but it was great to go up for a one-time coaching session with Andrew to get my form checked and corrected. Andrew is great to work with and had instruction and tips for me to get my lifting form in order to better make progress training at my home gym. Also, the atmosphere in the gym is great and encouraging with a bunch of other like-minded people all wanting to get strong and understanding that everyone is at a different point in that journey.
I highly recommend folks that live farther away and can’t be a regular member to come in every so often for a drop-in coaching opportunity. What would have taken me another 6 months to figure out on my own was resolved in a 90-minute coaching session. I plan to stop in every couple months or so to get real-time form checks and programming advice. Stop in… you won’t be disappointed with Andrew and his coaching team!

Andrew Lewis runs an outstanding training facility for those over 50 years of age. He appreciates that many have not lifted weights either ever or for a very long time. He and his team of coaches focuses on technique and safety which is paramount as I looked for options. This is NOT a workout gym; it is a training facility with regimented frequency of training and wait times between apparatuses with safety in the forefront of this design. This is NOT a sweatshop of workouts but rather a supportive approach to building strength safely and effectively.

I had the privilege of joining a group training session with Andrew this morning. I started strength training ten months ago, but there are no gyms close to where I live. Andrew graciously invited me to stop in while I was in the area. His excellent cues improved my squat and press. After PR-ing my work sets, he inspired me to finish my deadlifts! I've been on the road and wasn't sure I could do the entire workout.
Andrew and the members I trained with today are delightful people. If you are lucky enough to live near Starting Strength Indianapolis, and getting strong in the most efficient way isn't enough to get you down here, go for the welcoming atmosphere. I so wish there was a gym in my hometown of Tucson!
Thank you, Andrew!

Since I began training here six months ago, my squat, press, and deadlift have more than doubled in weight. That is so much more than I thought possible! I am a middle aged mom, and I was never athletic. I know that if I can do it, anyone can succeed with the knowledgeable and supportive coaching that is offered here! I feel so much better, I am healthier, and I improved my technique, too. My confidence and abilities are so much better! When you train here, you will have access to the best possible coaching and the greatest learning environment available anywhere! You will achieve real, tangible results that increase your own personal success! Strength is for everyone!

The strength coaches at this gym were helpful and knowledgeable. With multiple trainers and a few people working out in the facility simultaneously, I saw how each training plan was geared to each individual's body type, size, and ability level. Most importantly the strength program is simple and easy to follow. I Highly recommend it.

I am a 40-year old massage therapist/holistic health coach and I experience chronic low back pain. I was hesitant to begin at Starting Strength because one of my injuries came from doing deadlifts back in 2015. I decided to give Starting Strength a try and I'm so grateful I did! Last night, I was putting together a desk which requires a lot of bending over for an extended period of time. Usually when I get up from being bent over for a while or sitting for long periods, it takes me a minute to standup and get straightened out. Last night was different. I was able to stand right up with little to no pain!! I 💯% contribute this to strength training!!! I have only been with them for 3-weeks and already receiving this amazing result! A lot of our injuries come from weak muscle structure, which this is something I teach and preach to my clients. If you want longevity and want to be able to do the things you want in life like hike, travel, play with grandkids and etc, I highly recommend focusing on strength training at Starting Strength. Thank you, Andrew, for encouraging me to give your gym a try! I'm signed up for a second month :)

Currently, I have been working out three times a week, for just a little over a month at Starting Strength. I’ve noticed such a difference already! I used to get a little tired and winded after walking up and down two flights of stairs with the laundry basket, now it’s a breeze. I don’t feel tired at all after walking up and down a few flights of stairs, carrying clothes.
Also, I love rollerblading on the Monon trail with my son. I have realized that it’s no longer tiring rollerblading up the hills for the overpasses, like it used to be! If you want more energy and stamina for daily activities, I highly recommend giving Starting Strength a try!!

At Starting Strength Indianapolis on June 29, 2024, I had the good fortune to have a private coaching session with Andrew Lewis, the gym's head coach and owner. Andrew's gym is the closest Starting Strength to my home town, Lansing, Michigan. After familiarizing myself with the basic ideas behind Starting Strength through youtube and, seeing Andrew's video called, "Goals at Starting Strength Indianapolis with Andrew Lewis," I decided to make the nearly 4 hour drive to Indy for some coaching time with Andrew. I'll state right up front: Andrew's knowledge and expertise made all the hassle of a long drive and a hotel stay well worthwhile. I had questions on technique, setting up a workout schedule and equipment, and they were all clearly and concisely answered.
One of the technique adjustments Andrew helped me make was the bar position in the squat. I was having a lot of discomfort during my squats due to how I was locating the bar too high on my back. Before I could even ask the question, he recognized my technique flaw and helped me eliminate it. I've raised my squat weight twice since our session and, I'm happy to say, bar position is no problem at all. Coach Andrew also tweaked a couple other aspects of my squat and now I feel so much more confident that I'm performing the movement in a way that is safer and more effective.
Together we also worked through the bench, the press and the deadlift, and in each of them Andrew clarified for me the basics of each movement, then gave me feedback as I performed each of them as he observed. Back in my home gym with the notes from Andrew in hand, I'm far more sure of myself as I get under the bar.
The Starting Strength facility was pretty much what you would see in one of their youtube videos: racks on lifting platforms, weights, bars; no distractions, only the essentials for training to build strength.
Andrew and his fellow Starting Strength coach, Adam, were friendly and helpful. I enjoyed hearing them interacting with the other members who were training during my coaching session. There was lots of encouragement, mixed in with pinpoint feedback on technique, along with discussions of other topics, like workout programming. A beautiful supportive goal-oriented gym atmosphere. I could see that everyone present was interested in each other's progress, each other's success. Great to see, and, for a short bit, to be a part of it.
I wish I lived close enough to a Starting Strength gym to be a member. That I don't makes this opportunity to take advantage of Andrew's coach's eye even more special to me. And, though I can't be a part of it, I left happy to see that the members of Starting Strength Indianapolis are a community sharing strong mutual support.

I have been attending the Indianapolis branch of Starting Strength since April. My fiancée encouraged me to try it out after I had repeatedly put it off.
Andrew, the head coach, is extremely friendly and lays out the overview of their approach in very simple terms. The coaches work with your schedule and your experience, or lack there of, to create a progressive workout plan that works for you.
My coach, Adam, is very professional yet personable. He does everything he can to make workouts simpler and easier, despite the heavy weights you’ll find yourself able to lift.
In college I was stuck at 200lbs as my personal best for squats, but within 2.5 months the coaches had me beating that.
Both the coaches and the other gym attendees are friendly and polite. There is no air of arrogance or competitiveness. Everyone just wants to do their best, and for you to do yours.
Billing is handled monthly, and if you find the program is not for you, then you can quit at any time. However, if you want to start, or get back into weightlifting, this is the place to go in Indianapolis.

I found Starting Strength Indianapolis because of a squat and deadlift training camp they hosted. Prior to this camp, I had never been inside a Starting Strength gym.
This gym was clean, organized, and it was clear that the owners and members had a great deal of pride and respect for the gym. The owner, Andrew, approached me right away and made me feel comfortable from the start.
The camp was exceptional. All participants were personally guided through the step by step process of performing each lift. Each participant was then personally coached as they performed warm up sets and work sets for each lift.
In addition to the personal attention given to each strength trainee, there was in depth discussion ranging in topics from programming, nutrition, and even the anatomy and physiology of strength training. It was educational and eye opening, to say the least, from what I thought I knew prior to the camp to what I learned that day.
If you are serious, or even curious, about strength training, I would highly recommend giving this gym a try.

Whether you're trying to get started on your fitness journey, looking for short-term gains, long-term gains, or learning proper technique, this is absolutely the place to be.They have a wonderful program that is catered specifically to each client. I was a collegiate athlete but had to stop lifting for 3 years because of all my many injuries in college... that is until I came here where they helped make strength training enjoyable and manageable for me again. They were able to design a plan around my injuries while still finding ways for me to push myself. My 60+ y/o mom, sister, and brother-in-law are all clients here as well. The coaches here are all so wonderful, they watch every single rep you do and give you great tips during and after sets. I attended the power clean/deadlift camp on January 27, 2024. It was a great experience for several reasons. I received individualized coaching and training tips, including several helpful cues. This allowed me to set new PRs at the camp with relative ease, and I'm looking forward to continuing to progress through my strength journey. The SSC, Andrew, was gracious to entertain our questions throughout, including a Q&A at the end. The Q&A was great because we had the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics including nutrition, programming, and we even did some form checks for the other lifts. If you're thinking about attending a camp or want to schedule a coaching session at SS Indy, don't wait! The individualized instruction will give you peace of mind and allow you to achieve more than you could on your own. I highly recommend it!

I had an incredible experience at Starting Strength Indianapolis. I had been using the method but had been lifting on my own, and had not been coached in a while. My program had stalled and while visiting Indy I scheduled a private session with Andrew Lewis. I did a complete training session with Andrew together with his apprentice and as it turns out my form on the basic lifts had drifted, setting me up for injury. Andrew corrected with simple cues and offered to follow-up remotely with video review to make sure the changes stick. As an aside, the gym is an impressive space and a fantastic place to get strong with barbells under the supervision of experts.

I was intimidated to go, but was immediately put at ease with the welcoming environment—everyone in the class is in a different place in their fitness journey, and it felt totally safe and comfortable. The trainers teach you the proper form and help you wherever you’re at. My workout has so much more direction now, and I feel I know how to build muscle much more effectively. Pro tip—definitely write down the feedback they give you and read it before your workouts to remind yourself of the proper form.

*** Please note - I am an online client of Andrew's and have never actually been to this location. However, This business offers online coaching, so I felt compelled to leave a review. ***
"I'm very grateful for having Andrew as my online Starting Strength Coach for nearly two years now. While we've had to work around several pretty challenging obstacles and setbacks, Andrew's experience and patience has helped us navigate them smoothly while minimizing my stress. And while I'm still nowhere near as strong as I want to be, and certainly not strong for a 'lifter', I'm pretty psyched at the progress we've made - as an example, I recently overhead pressed 177.5 at a 193 BW and am fully confident and intent on reaching a BW press in the next year or so - which might not sound like a lot, but suffice it to say that it's a lot better than where I was before Andrew. Doing the lifts correctly, programming properly, and getting strong is hard work physically, mentally, and often time, emotionally (it's very time consuming, too, when you finish the novice stage!) - why make it harder by making the choice to not have an expert by your side when you can?
PS - Nothing compares to in-person coaching, so if you live in the area, give that a shot. If you don't or don't want to do in-person coaching for any reason, give online coaching a shot - it's definitely the next best thing.

I am 46 years old, 6’ 1” and have been following the Starting Strength method for roughly two years now. I’ve always been “tall and skinny,” so I set out with the goal of getting bigger, stronger, and more resilient. The first year, I worked on my own using the book, their forums, podcasts and YouTube channel. I made decent progress, but I quickly realized that I would need coaching to make sure that I was doing the lifts correctly to maximize my time spent under the bar. Just when I began to look at the online coaching options available, Starting Strength held a deadlift and power clean camp in Indianapolis, with the hopes of opening a gym here in town. I attended the camp and met Andrew Lewis, my first coaching session ever. Even though I knew I needed help going in, it was still a huge eye-opener getting live feedback on my technique. It felt much different doing the lifts correctly, and I knew it would be true for the other lifts I’d been doing as well. In January 2023, I started working once a week with Andrew and now we’re up to three times a week at the new gym. With the coaching and support I am getting from Andrew and his excellent staff, it’s clear to me that I will hit my goals on all the lifts and even beyond. I have put on 30 pounds of bodyweight, I’m stronger than I’ve ever been in my life, and I’m very excited about the journey ahead with the people at Starting Strength. Anyone who is interested in getting stronger should stop by Starting Strength Indianapolis and talk to Andrew.

I’ve been dealing with whiplash recovery from a go cart accident for about 5.5 years now. As a result I had about 3-6 days a week that consisted of both terrible neck pain and a headache. I’ve seen multiple doctors, a spine specialist, neurologists, etc for both of these issues. I began starting strength 6 weeks ago and I am blown away by my progress already. I have never had so few headaches or neck pain as I have since I began at Starting Strength. He helped me make some minor tweaks to both, and I could immediately feel a big difference in how I was pushing and pulling weight. I can tell that Andrew has a passion for (and a legitimate expertise in) barbell coaching. Overall, I found him professional and personable and will definitely be returning for future sessions.

I shot out to their gym from Pittsburgh the other day. Well worth the 2 hour trip. Without going too deep into my specifics, first set in on deadlifts and Andrew had immediate feedback on improvements I could make to my form. We went through the other big lifts and he had good, useful info that helped me feel stronger and more secure in the lifts. Professional approach, good feedback, noticeable improvements, all in 60 minutes. In short, it was a very positive experience.

Andrew sets a high standard while maintaining a relaxed environment. Gyms can be intimidating even for experienced lifters but BlackMetal is overwhelmingly positive with a focus on learning and improving rather than judgment. Many reviews are from people with lifting history but I would absolutely recommend this to a rank beginner.
Andrew and Adam pay careful attention to every lift offering real time input so the body/brain can immediately adjust and retain. They both have extensive knowledge of the mechanics of the lifts and proper cues to refine or fix issues. They also understand how different body types can present challenges and they factor that into their coaching.
As for my experience, like many others who reviewed, I had some experience with lifting but I was coming off a long hiatus. Is a decade a hiatus? Anyway, being older now, I wanted to make sure that I had proper technique. I had always struggled with low bar squats and power cleans. From day 1, Andrew was able to improve my technique and confidence. He also taught me the new Press 2.0 which I picked up quickly due to the coaching cues.
From a personal standpoint, Andrew is affable and personable. Training requires close interaction. Andrew and Adam's pleasant demeanor make it a comfortable environment

I have worked with Andrew for the past 5 weeks on a Starting Strength linear progression. Having done the program in the past I knew its benefits but always wanted to be formally coached. Andrew has been fantastic to work with from our first communication. He will take the time to get to know you and your goals and coach you every step of the way in a safe but productive manner. After just 5 weeks I definitely feel better and stronger physically. This training simply works and you can measure your progress every day. If you want to work with someone that is always available, great to interact with and genuinely cares about your progress, then Andrew is without a doubt the best option in NE Ohio.

Andrew has created a fantastic experience at Blackmetal. I'm older, new to lifting, and was slightly intimidated to begin however Andrew's professionalism and knowledge created a comfortable atmosphere to more easily adopt a program like Starting Strength.
Wrapping up my third month I've seen substantial differences in how my body is handling the consistantly increasing weights and how that is translating to how I feel day to day. The energy is remarkable.
Highly recommended. 10/10

Absolutely positive training experience with Andrew at Blackmetal Strength Training. I found Andrew and Blackmetal through the Starting Strength directory after working solo on the Starting Strength barbell program for about 6 months. I knew I wanted and needed some form help so I schedule a single session with Andrew to get me on track. Andrew was super knowledgeable, patient and informative. This single session revitalized my desire to improve my form on all barbell lifts. I will no doubt have some follow up sessions with Andrew to keep me on track.

Andrew was able to be flexible with scheduling for a training/coaching session, as I was coming from 2 hours away. I honestly did not expect to learn as much as I did in one training session.
The facility is VERY clean, the equipment is top notch, and Andrew took the time to answer all of my questions. He is a true professional and easy to talk to.
Well worth the trip and every penny. My only regret is that I didn't make the trip sooner. I look forward to training at Blackmetal Strength again in the future.

Blackmetal Strength Training is a uniquely welcoming and clean environment, with a focus on customer service and a personalized experience. Andrew has extensive knowledge and experience with barbell training, and it shows in his ability to quickly and effectively coach and diagnose technique in the barbell lifts. He's also a great communicator and easy to get along with. Having trained with Andrew for 6 weeks, I've come away with an increased knowledge about my technique in the barbell lifts and programming, and have made great progress. I highly recommend Blackmetal Strength Training!

I've seen significant gains in strength, form, and understanding since working with Andrew. It's been a great experience and very much worth the investment when I compare my current level to where I would be without the coaching. Andrew with his personal and professional knowledge and direct and supportive manner is enjoyable to work with and drives results.
I contacted Andrew after I had finished 12 months of lifting, and I would advise anyone who wants to move beyond basics in any pursuit that finding a coach or mentor is key. I live overseas and online coaching worked great.

My time spent with Andrew has been absolutely worth every cent. I initially wanted to correct my form and find a program that worked for me, and that’s exactly what I got. Regardless of one’s physical limitations, age, or injury history, Andrew takes the time to tailor a program specifically for your goals. His Starting Strength qualifications and knowledge speak for themselves, and it’s abundantly clear that he is a genuine professional who cares about clients and their results. This also shows in how he maintains his property, it is clear that he takes outstanding care of his equipment and facility. His services are not cheap, but they are entirely worth it. I would recommend Blackmetal Strength Training as the first choice for personalized/individual strength training in North East Ohio. What I learned here, I will be able to implement in my training for the rest of my life.

Andrew is a great coach who is easy to get along with. I have had experience with similar types of programs that he teaches. The programs ended up being too difficult and I plateaued before I should have. I have been working with Andrew for 4 weeks and I am as strong as I was with 12 or 16 weeks of training with no form issues or nagging pain. Can not recommend Andrew as a coach enough.

Andrew took the time to meet with me, even though I was still undecided on whether I would sign up for the full trial. He had an entire session with me where he watched me perform several exercises and then very carefully and thoroughly explained ways that I could improve the lifts. Andrew is very selfless in his instructing and very passionate about his work. It's very evident that he has your best interest at heart. Thank you again, Andrew! I've been training with Andrew for about a month now, prior to that I'd never tried to lift weights before. Gyms can be intimidating, I had no idea what I was doing, and I figured I'd hurt myself somehow. Andrew keeps everything very clean, he's easy to talk to, professional, very knowledgeable, and really breaks things down to help you understand better. My strength has already improved dramatically in this short period of time, and I find myself not struggling so much at work with the occasional heavy lifting I need to do. I feel much better overall and much less prone to injury. 10/10 recommend!

I began working with him with the goals to improve my form and lift 5lbs heavier. My squat, deadlift, press, and bench form has greatly improved in a way that engage more muscles and prevents discomfort (ex: my wrists frequently bother me and he has shown me ways to grip the barbell in a way that doesn’t bother my wrists). Needless to say, my goal of lifting 5lbs heavier was accomplished by the first week and I’m lifting much heavier after a month of training. Andrew is very friendly, answers any and every question I have fully and comprehensively, and is clear in his communication!

Walking into Blackmetal Strength Training, I was struck by how clean and uncluttered the workout area was. While my regular gym is doing all they can to ensure safety for their customers and staff, Blackmetal Strangth Training goes beyond that. All equipment is wiped down after sessions and if more than one person is working during a session, Andrew thoroughly cleans the equipment before the nest person uses it. Cleanliness aside, the training one receives is superior to any training I have received with other trainers. You get expert instruction regarding the main lifts that make you strong (squat, bench, deadlift and overhead press). I have been working with Andrew for about 1.5 months and have progressed in my lifts in a deliberate and safe way. While I am challenged each session, I also look forward to each challenge. If you are serious about lifting safely and make progress while doing so, Andrew is your Trainer. And you can't go wrong with his introductory deal.

Andrew makes this the place to be.
I am completely new to strength training- never touched a weight in my life, and I was scared to before I met Andrew.
As a novice, I feel comfortable around him because he makes it easy to learn! He is the best at explaining things so you can easily understand.
In my one month trial, I’ve learned perfect squat, bench/press, and deadlift form! Did I mention I’m twice as strong as I was on my first day?
Andrew makes you want to keep going! Everyday I spend with him, I’m stronger. The results make you excited to keep coming back.

This place is amazing. At first, I came to this place because I didn't feel very confident about going to the regular gym, and I wanted to find a place with less crowded. However, after training with Andrew for a month, I decided that I would train with him as long as possible. As you can see when reading feedback from other reviewers, Andrew is a very knowledgeable person (I can confirm it!), and he knows what he's doing. He always corroborates it with scientific facts and not just some broscience. I was able to add 100 lbs to my deadlift in a little over a month, and my other lifting also increased dramatically. I would highly recommend it to everyone!

The COVID-19 situation has negated the option for in-person coaching. Thankfully, Andrew found me via a post of mine requesting in-real-time virtual coaching on the Starting Strength Facebook Group. We had our first session last night. Despite the non-tactile virtual nature of the session, he was able to quickly and effectively address several of my form issues. He cued me with the right words at the right time and I was able to implement those cues to improve my form. He was also able to advise on several other issues and suggest solution options. Andrew was great to work with! His virtual methodology worked exceptionally well for me and he was very easy going, though not wishy-washy. I highly recommend his real time virtual coaching as a way to progress in your strength training. This was much more effective for me than the form checks that have delayed analytical responses. FYI - I'm in New Jersey.

Andrew’s approach to weightlifting reflects his engineering background in that he uses functional movement to treat the body like the machine it is. Couldn't recommend Blackmetal more highly. Andrew was happy to accommodate both me and my fiancée for couples' training. Coming in with a number of chronic musculoskeletal conditions, I was a bit hesitant to engage in a lot of workouts that I normally steer away from in order to avoid further injury, but Andrew developed a solid training plan replete with techniques to circumvent any potential injurious maneuvers. This review might be a bit longer, fyi. Long Story short I highly recommend this facility and Andrew's training to anyone looking to get strong.
I have struggled finding barbell strength gyms when I travel and have struggled even more finding ones that will let me come in to work. I found Blackmetal for a business trip and can't say enough good things!
The location was convenient in downtown Cuyahoga Falls and the studio, while smaller, was clean, well lit and perfectly suitable for the intended purpose.
Andrew provided one on one coaching in a very fun but laid back environment and showed his expertise as a Starting Strength coach. He wasn't shy about helping me correct form issues while simultaneously letting me know when I was doing things well.
I also loved the personal touches Andrew puts into his business with fresh made coffee for our 6am session, comfortable seating for resting between sets and so on.
