I appreciate the service that YMCA offers in general. They truly provide much needed support for their community’s over all health and wellness.

I want to share a special compliment to Jeanette Molina, my personal trainer at YMCA of Monroe County- - Southeast. Jeanette is that unique kind of trainer who cares deeply for her clients that she can make them work hard and find such joy in the grueling half or whole hour sessions day in and day out.
At each and every session guided by Jeanette - I feel accompanied by her gentleness and strength. If you’re like me who have a serious need for fitness training due to health issues or simply desire to work on improving your body for over all health find Jeanette Molina and start your fitness journey. I promise you will be healthier and happier.

This location needs to offer a Men and Women’s sauna. Health benefits have been proven. Other locations have them. I requested one around 2020 and was told they could cause heart attacks. That translates into overweight Men who are unhealthy using saunas irresponsibly. Tired of living in a Man’s world I’m not a Man. It’s possible to make a very small sauna with cedar planks 6 feet by 10 feet very easily. Like the one at the spa and pool at the Conrad in downtown Indianapolis.

Jeanette has really helped me improve my hips and lower back with targeted personal training exercises. I have been training for a few weeks, and I've already noticed major improvement in my mobility and pain levels. I highly recommend her as a trainer for anyone recovering or rehabilitating from muscle injuries or imbalances.

Our family loves the Y! My son has participated in the Tiger Sharks Swim team for years and we couldn’t love it more. CoachesTaylor, Josh, Jonahβ€”the entire coaching staff are really unparalleled.
Trainer Jeanette is amazing! We’ve only been working together for a few weeks but she has been so thoughtful in asking about my fitness goals, being totally transparent on what we’re doing and why, and is a fantastic encouraging force (while also pushing me to work hard)!

Trainer Jeanette is GREAT!! Jeanette takes time to learn your goals and prepares a weekly schedule toward obtaining those goals. She explains muscle groups involved and relationship/benefit.
I highly recommend Jeanette!!

We aren't from the immediate area, but we pass through enough that we have tried to utilize this location. The staff hassles my family members every time. We actively go to the other Bloomington location because of this.

Otherwise, it's clean and new... But not worth the confrontation.

Nice basketball courts, pool, and running track. Antiquated work out equipment. Almost impossible to find a useful cable grip, anything with "padding" is degraded to the level of painful, and a few of the pieces should be avoided altogether (ie the fly machine that pulls unevenly and can cross itself, and seated thigh machine being held together with a screw and digs into your shins). Given the cost of membership I seriously wonder where the money goes as it hasn't been reinvested in this place for a long time. If it's convenient, this place is OK, but there's better out there.
Update: new weight room is really nice. Still can't find any good grips for the machines so I've just bought my own to use. It's convenient enough for me but realized today that I've been paying for a family plan for a few years now and still can't involve my daughter (11) in many of the benefits. Kids are limited to the pool, basketball court (which is hit or miss) and running track. Really needs to have a fitness area where parents and pre-teens can workout, stretch, yoga etc. Even supervised youth are limited. After, 12 there's more but just be aware that under 12 the family isn't really "family".

I had to cancel my membership today. The reason we go is to give our toddler time in the pool. We live several towns over and make the YMCA a special trip… more than one occasion they have closed the Multi-use pool without warning. Today we were in for only 5 minutes then they closed it… saying they were low staff- but they kept the lap pool open. If any pool should close to staffing it should be the lap pool and keep the multi use pool open. 1) the multi use pool has a ramp with rails making it inclusive to people with reduced mobility. 2) it has a kid section where child can touch. 3) it has lap lanes.

Also, a year ago I wrote a comment card stating the changing table in the men’s room was in a poor location- under a set of stairs and having the lost and found tote under it made it difficult to use. Instead of moving the lost and found tote they removed the table… if you have toddler(s) or mobility issues. It is not the YMCA I would recommend.

The facility itself is pretty nice. But I'm passing through town as a truck driver on break and they asked me like a million questions just for a day. Pand then a lot of obnoxious teenagers come there. Be olderly people. Organized and calm, but teenagers are very obnoxious. And after around two a lot of teenagers came in Also, the only facility I've went to for a day. Pass that asked literally at least 20 questions, including COVID. Something else they make you sign ablaver. Why can't I just pay the fee and come in? They take a picture. Ask for your full name, your phone number. Your address. I was just trying to get a daypass. I thought that was kind of unnecessary.

Wonderful gym! They are extremely accommodating to disabled and elderly. They are of great value to those in the community who cannot afford a gym membership or summer programs. This is one of the few gyms that have great child care programs so parents can decompress with a nice sweat. My son is finally learning to swim thanks to great instructors at swim class. The pools and hot tubs are nice. I really enjoy the classes although I wish we had different dance classes-like hip hop. This ymca is clean and staff are very friendly. Very grateful for them!

Great staff and fantastic communication has been my experience. Reviewing to offset the Karens. Honestly don't know why someone would feel entitled to communication with a director, as the name implies they are likely very busy.

The front desk works above and beyond, the wellness staff get those scrappy green towels stocked and folded while still being available to members to answer questions. Biggest ups to the maintenance team, those folks work hard every year to bring new and exciting things to camp including building equipment, extensive remodels and all them I've talked to have been cordial and uplifting conversations. All in all I'd say our SE Y beats every other YMCA I've been to by leagues.

Absolute lazy staff. Sat there waiting behind the front desk people for 20 minutes waiting to use the racket ball equipment. The short haired front desk person and lifeguard ignore my girlfriend and me until I have to walk infront of them. Then once I finally ask again she gives me an attitude about how it’s eight minutes until close and she can’t give it to me. Instead of mentioning politely the 20 minutes we waited that it was too late to use (which staff last week allowed us to use the 15 minutes before closing) she ignores us completely. Real welcoming staff you have here, might cancel my membership or stop coming here all together.

Gets the job done, but doesn't serve it's most common customer base very well. Most people come to lift weights, but the free weight room is by far the smallest room in the gym, even though it's always the most crowded. Seems counter intuitive when there's rooms that are double the size with 0-3 people in them at all times. The cardio room right besides the free weight room is double if not triple the size as the free weight room and it's never even filled to half capacity. The crescent room across the courts is always empty and locked. They could put some free weights in the crescent room and it would definitely serve a higher common denominator of people.
Second most common goer goes to play basketball. But most days 4/6 courts are reserved for a dozen people to play indoor tennis for hours at a time. The wooden court is dying in all the spots where the nets are placed, just doesn't seem very rational but maybe the Y knows something that I don't.

Great Y for a workout!

But there are a few things I would change in the gym. I would add at least one more pulldown machine, another dedicated barbell bench press, deadlift platforms for each squat rack so you could have people squatting and deadlifting at the same time, and round weight plays instead of dodecagon ones.

None of these issues prevent one from having a really good weightlifting session, but they will contribute to people being able to go in and out of the weight area more efficiently.

The facility is neat and clean, and the equipments are high quality brands. However, the opening hours are short and also there were many days that they were closed, or closed earlier than the regular hours. After 1 year of experience, I decided to move to another gym that opens 24/7.

I have attended this YMCA for more than a decade and it just feels like home to me. I've tried to work out at other gyms like PF but I always come back to this Y. Theres people of all ages, sizes and abilities and I have never felt judged like I have in other gyms. Most gyms don't allow children but I can bring my kiddo to play basketball or walk around the track while I work out. The biggest plus is the swimming pool. I'm an avid swimmer and having the option to either do lap lanes or recreational swimming is the best feature of this gym. It is my favorite in town.

This is the only YMCA that I have ever heard of where you have to pay to attend a yoga class. They won't tell you this directly if you call to ask about their classes, so if you have a Y membership and just show up expecting to attend a yoga class, you are asked to pay up for a full eight classes. I got there early, no one at the front desk or even the instructor mentioned that the class required an additional charge. I was terribly embarrassed once a lady with a clipboard came in as the class was about to start and she only looked at me bluntly said "who are you?" With everyone else starting at me, like I was some trespasser. Furthermore, if you aren't a skinny middle-aged woman you can't expect to fit in. Even before the who "pay up" incident, I noticed that everyone there knew each other and had no interest in acknowledging me, like a social cliche.

I've been a member for 3 years. Overall the Y provides a very good facility at a very reasonable price. Staff are friendly and helpful. The physical facility is well maintained and kept clean. One criticism is the cell phone policy. Cell phone use in the locker rooms is banned for no credible reason. Meanwhile cell phone abuse in the exercise areas is rampant. People routine sit on exercise equipment while totally immersed in texting. There are signs up reminding members to be courteous and allow others to work in between sets. Many members routinely ignore this admonition (while testing) and are quite annoyed when I ask to work in. The Y needs to reconsider the cell phone policy and emphasize the point about not using exercise equipment as furniture while texting. I could care less if someone wants to use their cell phone in the locker room but am really tired of people hogging exercise equipment while totally immersed in text messaging.

I've been a member since 1990. I'm physically disabled to J.r.a. I now attend the arthritis aquatics classes and enjoy the routines as well as the socialization and encouragement by and with others. And the instructors are vtruly concerned.if our well being and knowledgeable on arthritis. If not for the membership aid program I could no afford to be a member at all. This would be detrimental to my health to the y is the only fitness facility with indoor pools available for the general public. However, to unwanted divorce two years ago (after over 20 years together) I'm now on my own do of poverty level income. In Bloomington this is very hard. To I receive medicaire (for my primary health insurance) I can go to places that participate in silver sneakers. However, the Monroe county y does not. The membership aid also is increasing to cost of living overall. It would greatly help me to be able to use my silver sneakers membership. Twin lakes accepts it but has no pool. I can only do aquatics fitness now to recent total knee replacement. I am considering checking out the Spencer y to takes silver sneakers but I've been going to the s.e. one so long I feel like it is a second home and the people I've met in the arthritis aquatics classes are like family. So I do not want to leave this y. Please, seriously consider adding silver sneakers to your membership for people in situations as I. Thx. Much. Hope you have a good Christmas

I have really enjoyed my experience visiting the Bloomington Southeast YMCA. We have been members for quite some time, although we suspended our membership for a couple of years. The facilities are very well-maintained and with god equipment. Our interaction with the staff has been very positive and they are particularly good in organizing some special events like runs and breakfast with Santa. The pool area is very nice, including the area for small kids to play. I also really like their camps, which have many offerings.

I figured I'd write a review about my positive experience here over the last few months to help offset some of the negative remarks. I'm a new member here (but not new to gyms) and this facility has a lot to offer. The free-weight room has more than enough equipment for the number of people I see in there. I usually go after 8pm. The machine room has a nice variety of cardio stations as well as a whole range of pulley machines for every muscle group. There is a nice indoor running track, basketball courts, racquetball, 2 hot tubs, 2 pools, 2 levels of locker rooms and showers, and all kinds of specialty classes. The staff is great and friendly. I'm not sure if there was an issue with cleanliness in the past, but I see two people cleaning machines and vacuuming every time I go there.

There are two negatives that come to mind.
The towels are tiny and not soft at all. They actually scratch your skin.
Also, at least one of the pools or hot tubs seem to be closed for maintenance every time I'm there. But usually they are up and running shortly after.

Overall, I highly recommend this YMCA. It's a great deal for the money and a positive environment.

I've been a member for over twenty years and unfortunately this (SE) location has been poorly maintained, has gross locker rooms, and has an overall unkempt appearance. Do not listen to these old reviews!! I've been coming to this YMCA since I was 6 (I am now almost 23) and I love it there. Staff is very friendly and inviting - even at 5:30 in the morning! They have recently upgraded almost all of their equipment and workout rooms. They offer a variety of classes and provide a great family environment. I have always enjoyed the time I've spent at the Y, and look forward to coming back for many more years to come.

NOT CLEANED PROPERLY. The worst of all possible gym crimes. The locker rooms are actually scary--the smell of urine in the toilet area is beyond belief. The cleaning staff doesn't seem to be aware that you have to clean under equipment, wipe down 100% of the surfaces (not just the handles), get a scrub brush behind door partitions in the restrooms, etc. The whole place should be shut down for a week of intensive blasting with high pressure steam and bleach.

The equipment is decent, not fancy but adequate, but the (lack of) cleanliness is not acceptable. Also, they have a sign up for equipment with a 30 minute limit, but they don't enforce it. What's the point? If I want to use a machine for an hour, I'll just put down another name after mine. This is a (nonfunctional) stop-gap to prevent them from having to do what really needs to be done--EXPANSION of the cardio area. Space-wise, vast open areas are dedicated to basketball, an indoor track, and childcare while the main workout areas are undersized and poorly ventilated. They really need to shut this place down, sterilize it, and get a professional layout to get this gym up to modern standards. The challenge seems to be that they try to serve too many masters--there are hundreds of little children running around all the time. While I understand the family concept, this facility is sorely lacking in adult-only spaces. Sure, they have areas that are marked "adults only" in the workout room--but the parents and kids don't obey them, and the area overlaps with the gymnastics room for children, so there are always kids back there. As far as the locker rooms, marking the upstairs as "adults only" would seem to be a big step... but there are no walls to the upstairs area, so the kid noise is still constant! This does NOT make for a relaxing experience.

I like my gyms well equiped, well ventilated, relaxing and CLEAN, and would be more than willing to pay a premium membership fee to find that. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any gyms meeting those standards in Bloomington.
