Its not the equipment. its not necessarily the staff. hear me out. Im doing it all right now as a father alone for awhile. Ive been in this spot before (as a powerlifter of 15 years).

I came in with my 7 year old and mind you ive done this with my kid his whole life in many various commercial, powerlifting and strongman gyms, they know they had to of seen me near the counter with him. and I proceeded up to the gym floor. My 7 year old was simply sitting at the rest bench Indian style playing roblox on his tablet. same old routine as usual with my boy for years when I've had to bring him along.

They waited for me to get through all my warm ups and load up 555lbs on the bar to do tempo stiff leg deadlifts and after my 2nd set to come up and tell me I got to leave because you can't have kids on the gym floor. Really, or are you actually just upset about the weight on the bar and potential intimidation in a commercial gym environment?

Come on, you could of stopped me at the door. I even went pee and came back to the front door area. you then had to go ask management when I asked if my boy could sit near the desk continuing to play roblox... Management decided to deny me my workout (due to him not being allowed to sit alone)

Interesting theory. almost about as politically left as the town itself I suppose? You have no idea the maturity level and capability of my 7 year old people. and you shouldn't be the ones determining that responsibility until he is shown to be some kind of disruptive would be my firm opinion which once again in the 7 years I've had to do this I've been kicked out of any gym because of my son. not any YMCA, Strength gym, powerlifting gym, you name it. so tell me your true bias against a peaceful gym dad.

The ames fitness owner told my wife he knows me, I will be finding his number when she gets back around in the end of August and discussing this directly.

Several things are true about this gym.
1) it is the best gym in Ames.
2) it is not a very good gym.
3) there are lots of friendly employees here.
4) the employees don't know very much.

Toward #3 and #4, I have tried--three times in the past week--to get my spouse a membership, simply by going to the front desk and saying "I'd like to get my spouse a membership". Invariably, the 19-year-olds working at the front desk look at me as if I were an alien, responding "yeah, I don't do that? I work in ____", where "____" is a bunch of words strung together.

Most recently, I was referred to their website for help with membership. Upon visiting this website (which looks as though it were the class project of a 7th grader in 2005), I was tickled to find this:

"Stop in today to find out more about our various membership packages designed for all schedules and budgets!"

I'm no economist, but I can't help but think it's a strange business model to expect potential customers to go on a scavenger hunt before paying for, y'know, the thing that your business is selling.

I have been seeing Nathan for almost 3 years, first for diet and weight control and then added core and upper body strength. Probably the best health decision I have ever made. I am stronger and more stable and the best overall shape and health than the past 15 years. He works me hard but mindful to prevent injuries. And he is very supportive and encouraging. An excellent trainer!

I have been going to Colette for over 2 years now and I highly recommend her. She is attentive to my needs (sometimes before I know there's a need 😉), friendly, and very knowledgeable. I appreciate her broad knowledge of the body and that she stays current on best practices. I feel that I can talk to her about anything from nutrition to exercise to even world events if something piques my interest. She has a devoted clientele, so she fills up quickly. I would encourage anyone to try Colette and let her work her magic on you! 🙂

Colette Friest is a very gifted massage therapist. She has experience using a variety of techniques and is very focused on identifying areas of tightness and how to best release them. She offers suggestions for self help and between appointments she remembers previous issues . Colette is very kind, caring and professional.

Working with Nathan for the past 6 months has been a great experience. I had fallen off my exercise routine and needed to get back on track after a shoulder injury. Nathan listened to my goals and tailored a program that allowed me to achieve success as I defined it — not as a societal stereotype. Life doesn’t occur in a straight line and Nathan adapts to my schedule as well as providing checkpoints along the journey. His knowledge of the interface of kinesiology and nutrition is vital to fulfilling my goals. Nothing but praise for Nathan, an unmitigated 5 star rating. Joe

I highly recommend Colette Friest as a massage therapist. Her exceptional skill level is immediately apparent - she asks questions about problem areas and intuitively finds tension points. She uses the perfect pressure throughout. What sets Colette apart is her personalized approach - she takes time to understand my specific needs and tailors the session accordingly. The atmosphere is peaceful and professional, and I leave feeling both relaxed and rejuvenated. Colette combines technical expertise with genuine care for her clients' wellbeing. If you're looking for more than just a standard massage, book with Colette - you won't be disappointed. It’s why I’ve been going to her for over a year.

Colette Friest is a remarkable, skilled massage therapist! I have been seeing Colette for monthly 1 hour therapeutic massages for a couple of years now. I appreciate that Colette discusses any current concerns I have (i.e. usually stiffness in muscles and joints) before the massage begins. She then addresses those concerns during the massage session to my complete satisfaction. I leave each session feeling relaxed and with better range of motion. Colette's enthusiasm and knowledge make the massage enjoyable and therapeutic. I highly recommend Colette if you want a thoroughly effective massage done with care.

Colette is the best massage therapist! She addresses any pain, sore muscles, tight areas, and works on my leg circulation. She always asks how the pressure is and how I am doing over all! She released so much pressure when I had a frozen shoulder that helped decrease my healing time, as she is able to tailor each massage according to my body’s needs. I highly recommend Colette and if she has an opening, you better take it quick!

Been here about 6 yrs now and I can’t say enough good things about this place! My kids LOVE playing here, the staff is attentive, kind & welcoming. I don’t play about my kids- so finding a place where my kids feel SAFE and taken care of when I’m not around was big on my list and they check every box. And did I mention how CLEAN they keep the kids gym! 10/10 would recommend this place if you have kids and want a worry free workout!

Colette Friest is amazing and a miracle for me. I’ve been seeing her once a month for 2 1/2 years. She always has a smile is cheery and will ask you how was your last visit and did you have any issues. We proceed to the next question which will be, how are you doing today and any problems I need to really work on, lighten up or avoid. Throughout the massage she will ask how the pressure is. I’m Thankful for Colette’s knowledge, technique, dedication and compassion. She gives me great advice and listens to me. When I receive dates and times to sign up for a massage I reply quickly as I know she fills up quickly.

Since I can leave only one review for AFC South, this review contains two assessments, massage therapist and personal training.

Colette has been my massage therapist for 4+ years. I have monthly 60-minute sessions. She always asks about what areas need work including areas to avoid. At first, my response was everywhere but now I understand my body and our sessions are more targeted. If she thinks a different technique would be useful, she describes the process and ask if she could try it. She asks for feedback and listens and makes changes as needed. When she is scheduling future sessions, I am quick to respond as she has a devoted clientele and her time fills up.

Nathan has been my trainer for 7 years. At first, I had weekly 30-minute sessions but have had twice a week 30-minute sessions for the past 2 and a half years. These extra sessions started after a major health scare. He was extra careful with my training as I regain my strength and endurance, and now I am stronger than I ever! He knows when to push and when I need to take it easy. Since I am an older adult, he has developed workouts to keep my balance in great shape. Our sessions are more than a workout, they include life advice and tips, informational sharing, current event discussions, and lots of laughter. Lately he has been sharing his routines and my progress with my chiropractor to ensure that we are not doing anything contradicting the chiropractic work. It great having my trainer, my massage therapist, and chiropractor in the same location and a part of my wellness team.

Colette has been my massage therapist for 4+ years. I received monthly 60-minute massages. I know when I started, my body was not in good shape from a muscular tissue standpoint. She asked about where I was needing work. For quite a while, my answer was everywhere but now I have better understanding of my body, and she can concentrate on specific spots I mention. If she thinks a different technique is needed, she asks if it okay to try it and then ask for feedback. She has given me advice on how to do some personal massage techniques. When she contacts me to schedule upcoming massages, I quickly respond because she has a devoted set of clients. I highly recommend her but be patient as you and her find a time.

There is lots to be gained from working with Nate. Nate builds a specific plan for your specific goals. He has the knowledge to build that plan with nutrition and workouts for maximum efficiency. He caters that plan to you (if you have food restrictions, or physical limitations). He is constantly taking classes and learning more to assist his clients. I will continue to work with Nate because he pushes me (I can deadlift more than my weight) and he makes the training so fun you look forward to the next time. I highly recommend Nate!!💪

Colette Friest is the best! I see her for a monthly massage at the South Ames Fitness Center. She is so very kind and caring, along with being a fantastic masseuse! She always asks if there is something specific that is troubling me and attends to those issues. I have enjoyed our many conversations about family, books and physical activities. Colette also respects the times when we do not converse - and I just enjoy the quiet and good feelings of the massage. She attends conferences/classes to keep updated with new and improved techniques. She has a great attitude and a wonderful smile. I have been a loyal client of Colette Friest for many years. If you are looking for a massage therapist, she is the best you can have. Here is why. She listens to you carefully and addresses the problem. She has a talent for finding the real cause of the pain you report, not just the sore place you mention. And then she addresses the problem, first with her healing hands via massage, and then with suggestions about exercises that might help. She has a deep knowledge of the human body and uses a wide spectrum of different techniques and methods to address different parts of the body. She takes a holistic approach to human health, and she is open to learning and sharing about many different healing approaches. She educates you about your body in general, including diet, exercise and general care. She really cares about her clients and follows up as needed. In all respects, she goes the extra mile for me and others.

Colette Friest is a terrific massage therapist, one of the best out of many I have utilized over the years, and I have had the privilege of being her client for the past 10 years. We begin each session with a thorough review of any problems or changes since the last massage. In some cases, this has led to suggestions that in addition to massage I investigate changes in diet or seeing specialists outside her area. In all cases, my massage is tailored to areas that I think need attention. As we progress and she examines me, other possible problems and remedies are addressed. She is quite well-read, with a holistic understanding of human health, exercise and anatomy. On almost every occasion, she will share some article or new finding that she is working on. With me, she has focused on rehabilitation from accidents on more than one occasion. Two years ago I had a shoulder injury as a result of a bicycle accident. She worked carefully and constructively on that area and provided some suggestions for exercises I could do to further strengthen muscles in this area. I would not hesitate to recommend her to others I know. In fact, I have discovered that many of my friends and associates already utilize her services.

I love AFC South. I work with my dietician, Nathan Schwartz, and my personal trainer, Melissa Brooke.

I started working with Nathan in June 2023 and it has been nothing short of AMAZING! Absolutely life-changing. I am a totally different person. I had been doing personal training for a while and it was the nutrition that was the missing piece for me. I have lost 55 pounds working with him! If you say you've "done everything" to lose weight, I don't think you truly have unless you've tried working with a dietician/nutritionist. Nathan has a ton of knowledge and teaches you so many things. Instead of going to the internet and trying to sift through all the recommendations--most of it conflicting!--you have one person as your go-to who knows everything you need and will guide you on a PERSONALIZED plan to meet your goals. Although I've tried before to just "watch what I eat" I didn't know what I was doing and I didn't want to do fad diets or a diet at all. But even then I didn't know what to focus on, what my goals should be. Nathan knew ALL of that, and we started with small changes and kept building and building. Luckily, I had the personal training habit already and I was already committed to walking a lot and eventually I've gotten into running which has been easier as I have lost and continued to lose weight. But it just truly was the missing key for me and I started losing weight immediately. I saw the scale go down every day! It also was not a "diet" so it was sustainable life-style changes that I know I can continue even when I am at my goal weight. I'm still eating what I want and like and not having to give up everything. I also have learned to incorporate fruits and veggies and I LOVE them more than I ever have which is awesome! I'm 100% confident that this weight is not coming back and I have Nathan to thank for that.

I am so much happier, healthier, and I love the way I look and feel. I have learned so much, I know the weight will stay off, and I didn't have to do any crazy diet to do it. Now these last 10 pounds are tough, but that's for anything! I still know I'm in the best shape and mental state possible. I was never miserable through this whole process.

So if you are TRULY ready to commit and listen and follow an expert's advice, you need to get with Nathan NOW!!! Don't wait! I'm so glad I stopped by that one day just to "check it out" and got signed up and started. The hardest part is the first step--so get out there and take that first step!

My entire life I only measured my success based on the scale, and after working with Nathan through Ames fitness, my health had turned around for the best. Nathan Schwartz has taught me to celebrate non scale victories such as certain clothing fitting better or showing up to the gym for the week. Seeing these changes in myself with Nathan’s help had helped me stay disciplined and motivated to be 1% better everyday until I reached my goals (lost 40 pounds, reduced my body fat percent that reduced my risk of disease, and I even got to compete in a power lifting competition with Nathan’s and his wife’s support). To this day I carry all that he has taught me and apply his lessons in all aspects of my life. Nathan will help you reach any goal of yours with a plan that’s specific to your needs. No matter where you are in your journey always trust the process and don’t be afraid to ask for Nathan’s help!

Amazing gym with tons of facilities, locations, and equipment! Staff is great too. I worked with Nate since August and I have made some awesome progress. Not only that but I am now more educated about nutrition as well, and I know I have a good idea of what my body needs to be healthy and energetic. Nate has been supporting and extremely helpful, answering all of my questions and helping me on this journey!

I have not used any other gym facilities in Ames except State Gym, so I can’t compare AFC to anything else. I also mostly use the South location.

As far as I’m concerned, AFC is a wonderful gym with a supportive staff, a strong sense of community for regulars, a safe, open environment, and plenty of available services. I’ve benefited from working with a personal trainer- John Lewis- as well as nutritionist Nathan Schwartz to help me recover my sense of personal fortitude after experience health decline caused by chronic illness. They’re a huge help, and I think of them as coaches, especially because they sometimes have a much better vision for me when I’m feeling discouraged.

I also regularly use the steam sauna, dry sauna, women’s locker room, and the yoga studio. All have been clean, in working condition, and so so welcome. The yoga instructors do a great job!

As far as workouts, I appreciate their variety of spaces for functional workouts, the South track, kettlebells, the rollers/shoulder bar stretchers, mats for core, treadmills and stair steppers. My husband similarly appreciates his personal trainer, Colt, and likes the squat racks, cardio equipment, and other tools out there to lift weights. We recommend AFC and have encouraged a few friends to get back to the gym there or try it out.

One note is that in a college town, it’s heavily used by college students, especially in the afternoon. Saturday morning is also really popular. Staff do their best to remind people to bring dry shoes during the winter, not sit and scroll on machines, and sanitize equipment. Unfortunately, inconsiderate people will always happen, especially among college students. Staff are super helpful if you just politely ask for help.

Very friendly staff and nice facilities. I trained with two personal trainers at South AFC: Simon Sounders and John Mongar. They are both excellent at what they do, and have helped me reach my goals. AFC trainers all have different styles and specialties which allows them to serve clients with very diverse needs.

I love going to the South Fitness Center. Nate is my trainer, and I've been seeing him for years. I have gotten much stronger both physically and mentally. Nate has a background in Nutrition, and he has also been able to help me navigate food choices for increasing protein, vegetables etc. Nate has also helped me get over my fear of the 'big, scary, machines.' In addition, I really appreciate the openness and the natural light the South Center offers.

I’m in my late 40s and wouldn't call myself a fitness buff. So when I first walked into Ames Fitness Center South, I had no idea what I was doing. I was completely new to strength training and a little intimidated by the free weights and machines—I guess you could say I was gymtimidated. I knew I wanted to get stronger, but I didn’t know where to start, so I decided to work with a personal trainer. That’s when I met Frank.

Frank has been voted Best Personal Trainer in Story County for a reason—he knows his stuff. He doesn’t just tell me what to do—he actually teaches me. He’ll point out which muscle I’m working, where I should be feeling it, and how to fix my form if something’s off. That education makes a huge difference because now, when I’m working out on my own in the main gym—the place that used to make me feel gymtimidated (oh, you get it now—gym + intimidated)—I feel more confident…and less worried about becoming a #gymfail meme.

The South location is clean, and the equipment is well-maintained. It has everything I need—free weights, weight machines, cardio equipment, and a track. The parking lot is well-lit, which is great if you're coming early in the morning or later at night. The staff are friendly, eager to help, and there’s a great energy the moment you walk in the door.

The biggest downside? It can get really busy, especially in the evenings. If you go during peak hours, be prepared to wait for equipment or adjust your workout plan. But if you can go during off-peak times, you’ll have a much easier time finding open machines—and you won’t feel rushed by more seasoned lifters.

If you too have ever felt gymtimidated and want to build your confidence along with your strength, I highly recommend this place. A year ago, I walked in with no clue what I was doing. Now? I still don’t totally know what I’m doing—but I know more than I did a year ago, and that feels pretty amazing. And if you’re new to strength training like me, working with a personal trainer—especially someone like Frank—can make all the difference.

I love Going to the south AFC. The people there are so friendly and the gym is clean. But I especially love my trainer Emily. I’d been doing strength training for years when my back started preventing my workouts and even walking. She switched me to Pilates and that has been a godsend! My core is getting stronger and my back stays stabilized. I have Grown strong enough to start weights and strength training again. I would Be lost without Emily’s knowledge and help. I have been going to AFC North & South for about 6 months now. While, it is the "best" option in Ames, I would hesitate to recommend it.

I mostly use cardio and resistance equipment, and most of their equipment is heavily worn Life Fitness and Hammer Strength. The track in AFC South is kinda cool. Many of the treadmills have excessive wear on the belts, which creates an uneven surface when using them. Some of the bench presses were not assembled properly and are crooked, making them awkward to use. The rubber handles on ALL of the pull up bars are only half way on, meaning that you might grab onto the handle, only for it to turn flaccid and you lose your grip. Many machines have damaged pads and handles. There is one cardio machine that has been out of service for at least 3 months now. The only equipment that I can think of that is not damaged is a few of the squat racks at the south location.

There is also a severe shortage of equipment in general: plates, benches, squat racks, machines, barbell collars, you name it. I only go during non-peak hours, and my workouts are usually interrupted, because I have to hunt for plates, or I have to wait for a machine to be available. The cardio equipment seems to be exempt from this, but I can say the same thing every single other gym I've been to. This is especially atrocious, given the absurd cost of the gym membership.

When I signed up the membership was $69/month, and if I remember correctly they charge you a $200 initiation fee if you do not opt for a 2-year contract when signing up. The previous gym I went to (which was locally-owned and not a big-box gym) cost $25/month, had better equipment, and had none of the issues I mentioned above. AFC might be worth it if you need a gym with a tennis court, or a pool, or a sauna. Otherwise, it is hard to justify.

Once my membership expires I will definitely look into other options. Unfortunately, Ames doesn't have many good options when it comes to gyms, so I am hoping some new gyms open up by then.

I had a terrible experience at this gym! I was told by a new staff member after my three months i won’t get charged and the decision was on me if I wanted to continue with the membership. After the three months I came by the gym to cancel but I was told the advisor was busy and he will call me. A week go by and no call. I called them and explained my situation and the front desk assured me I’m not getting charged after the three month trail. I finally got ahold of brat the advisor on my way to work, he was mean mugging and very cold. He was not friendly to work with. I told him my situation and he said I’m not getting a refund for that month. I didn’t even workout that entire month because they made it difficult for me to cancel and the team members just mislead me and told me the wrong information.

I just signed up at Ames Fitness Center, and I'm already impressed! The facility is top-notch with 24/7 access, excellent cardio and strength equipment, and a great variety of amenities. The group fitness classes are included with the membership, and there are so many to choose from, fitting perfectly into my busy schedule.

A special shout-out to Colt, who has been recognized as the best personal trainer in Story County. Even in my short time here, I've seen how dedicated and knowledgeable he is. His personalized approach to training is exactly what I was looking for, and I'm excited to start working with him.

The staff here is incredibly friendly and welcoming, which makes a huge difference. The overall atmosphere is supportive and motivating. I'm looking forward to making the most of all the services they offer, from fitness classes to massage therapy and the indoor pool. Extremely frustrated to the point I'd like to just move away, even though I already have! I went here due to a friend saying it's great, well it isn't for me. Extremely busy every time I go (sometimes 2, sometimes 6-7), when I started I went to the south main location and that was a mess, 6 squat racks isn't enough and if there's one open people race to it, same with free weights. Started going to the north location and its almost the same way, super busy plus less equipment than south.
So on to the contract. For one why does a gym have a contract? I've never been to a gym with a contract, YMCA, anytime, strength shop ect. Why are you giving highschool/ college students contracts? So after not understanding the contract and still signing up (because I thought it would be a nice open gym and I'd stay), let me tell ya it's super hard to get out of it. Even after moving 25 miles away they still won't let me go! YOU HAVE TO MOVE 50 MILES AWAY, you could move all the way to Webster city and still have to come to Ames fitness. Completely stupid! It's so inconvenient for me now having moved away further from Ames and still being locked into this place. So thanks Brett Halverson for denying my request. I will try and let everyone I know not to come to Ames fitness. This gym is my worst nightmare.
Do yourself a favor, go to strength shop, planet fitness or just something else.. All have no commitment.

Where do I start, this gym is what I think of when thinking of the perfect gym. It started with the location and excellent staff and service. It quickly moved to the awesome energy and knowledge that you get from all staff; they are eager to help and will take time with you. Also, they understand what you are striving for and they WILL get you there and further, while having fun. The group classes are intense for every level athlete, and you will love the diverse workout combinations.

Also, I must give credit to the south gym manager, Brett. I had a not so great experience in the past and Brett went above and beyond in making me feel valued as member. He know many of the members that visit the gym by name, and will always make time in hearing concerns and recommendations. If you visit this gym or plan to become a member, I would highly recommend you speak with him as he has great deal of context and will connect you with the right person for your individual fitness goals. I would highly recommend this gym and specifically, the south location! The team and Brett operates on excellence!

I came to Ames for ISU, and I guess I had the misguided notion that things in the bigger city were supposed to be bigger and better. I've been wrong on every level since I've been here and this place is no different. They don't enforce the mask wearing. Signs say masks on unless you are working out, masks on moving between machines etc. Nope. Most people I saw coming and going weren't even wearing them into or out of the building. Bring a change of shoes, no street shoes in the workout areas. Nope. Mud and water all over everywhere, even on the track. I never had a tour of the facilities so my first time there I'm walking around trying to figure out what equipment was where. I got so many stares like I was an alien from outer space or something. Definitely not a welcoming atmosphere. I was excited for a moment because they have heavy bags, but even looking like I was going to walk over to that area and I was met with death stares. 3 machines total for leg exercises. 99% of weight machines were for upper body. The leg curl and extension machines I couldn't even use right because the pads were so worn down, even on the shortest adjustment the settings were too big for my legs. And I'm not small by any means. Absolutely no where to do any agility work, or functional movement/sandbag workouts. Really unless you just want fitness, and not somwwhere to do legit training, don't waste your money. I'm glad I only did a 3 month thing. I already regret it. I'm trying to come back after 3 years because of injury, I could basically do more in my tiny apartment than I can here. My gym back home was small, but it had so much more to offer. Complete disappointment, just like everything else in Ames so far.

I cannot recommend this company. The facilities are nice, but it’s a complete money grab. They offer 3 months free but make you sign a 15 month contract so you end up paying for a full year anyway. Maybe most disturbing of all is no leeway for the pandemic. I understand that they are a business and need to make money, but no communication regarding precautions they are taking (if any) and no alternative pathway for those who signed up but no longer feel that it is safe to work out here. Unless you are a individual who works out 2x a day everyday, you will not get your money worth here. Do not join.

Was told today to not drop the weights so loudly while deadlifting (I had just hit a PR while using bumper plates on a deadlift platform) because one of the businesses downstairs had complained. Why would you put the gym ABOVE the businesses? This is a fairly new building and this design choice shows a complete lack of common sense. Give it a few years and a planet fitness will move in and put this gym out of business. All the casual lifters will move to PF and all the serious lifters, who you are alienating, will want nothing to do with you.

My time here was short lived. I had purchased a membership and less than two weeks I had to move to a different city for work. I had never gone in as a customer, not even once. When I tried cancelling, it would take them over a week to respond back to me, they said I could not cancel the membership. They wouldn't even let me buy out the contract at
a slightly lower cost. I just have to wait for the one year membership to run out. Their customer service was awful.

EDIT: Shortly after posting this, they said they misunderstood what I had said and they did cancel the membership. While I do appreciate them doing this, the rating stays the same because in the end it took me writing a review to get it done. Again, thank you for canceling the membership, but I hope the next person doesn't go through the same thing I did.

You would think they would want to convenience the potential customer rather than force you to go there and a wait to hear a sales pitch from an guy behind a desk.
