I would give this Genesis Health Club over 5 stars if I could. I was looking for a gym that had knowledge and expertise as I was looking to lose weight, add some muscle, and just be overall make better lifestyle choices. When I met Brooklyn, I was sold. I asked her questions about my personal goals and was very impressed with her knowledge on nutrition and exercise. While we were sitting down and I had already signed on the dotted line and given her my credit card, she went above and beyond and walked me over to machines I had never seen in a gym before and demonstrated how they work and why I wanted to use them. She then said, "You try". She corrected my technique and gave me some more pointers that I can use for my workout. Her friendliness and level of professionalism is something that in my personal experience is very rare to find in a mid-size to large health club with so many moving parts. If this is what you can expect from Genesis Health Clubs on Merle Hay, you should not hesitate to start or re-start your fitness journey. Ask for Brooklyn if you haven't met her yet! I'm excited for fitness again,

I have experienced a few other personal trainers and Austin, AJ, Hunter is by far the best. He listened to my concerns and goals and I felt every training session was planned with them in mind. He paid attention to what I was doing and corrected any mistakes so as to insure I got the most out of my workouts. To top it all off he was a very pleasant and fun person to work with. I am training with Austin. I had stopped training for a while due to knee surgery when I started back I had few prepaid training sessions left. My plan was to use what I had and not buy more. I started training with Austin he was perfect. He makes my workouts exciting fun challenging and I feel great when I leave, he has helped me to improve my strength, flexibility, and endurance. After 8 years as a loyal member of Aspen/Genesis on Merle Hay, I’ve decided it’s time to move on. My decision comes after a disappointing experience involving the theft of two car key fobs—an incident that occurred during a slow day at the gym, within a 90-minute window and in full view of the facility.

What made it worse wasn’t just the theft, but the complete lack of concern from the manager, Devon (the tall guy in smedium shirts and skinny pants who seems more into strutting around than managing). He fed me some nonsense about needing a police warrant just to review security footage. Really? Know your audience! I wasn’t asking for a shakedown—just for someone to identify and contact the person who took my keys. All I wanted to hear from Genesis was: “We’ve got your keys back.”

Apparently, that level of basic customer service is too much to ask from Devon and Genesis. So here’s my final note: I’ve locked my credit cards, and you won’t be getting another payment from me. I’ve found another gym.

As seasoned citizens, we were looking for a calmer, quieter gym experience. A Black Friday special provided us with some trainer time. I really like the flexibility of the training sessions. Austin Hunter has been a great trainer, helping my husband recover from a stroke. The improvement in his abilities has been amazing! Working out with my PT Austin, is a great experience! From the first day I liked the routine of exercises that he programmed for me and also how careful he is with his clients. he been on correcting posture and giving advise. his creates are always interesting, challenging and fun. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking to start their fitness journey.
When I first signed up, I tried the free personal training session and was really hesitant. I was at the very beginning of my fitness journey (think: couch potato), but after that first session with Austin, I decided to sign up for personal training.

Austin is an excellent trainer. No matter where you're starting from, he makes you feel comfortable and capable. He tailors the workouts perfectly—pushing you just enough to build confidence and gain momentum without feeling overwhelmed.

Austin (AJ) Hunter has been my trainer for several months. I am 74, so having an excellent trainer at least twice weekly is important to me. I have been consistently going to a gym twice per week for 8 years. I had noticed how AJ interacted with his clients and how he watched each rep closely for proper technique, so I asked to sign up with him. Even though I have been doing this “gym thing” for a long time, I feel so comfortable that he is always making sure that I am working the right muscles correctly and safely. He encourages me to put in additional aerobic time, which I have never enjoyed, but do know how important it is. I now am at the gym 4-5 times per week, and also continue my weekly yoga class.

AJ is a professional, experienced, knowledgeable, and supportive trainer, and gets 5 stars from me-:)!

Updating to 4 stars - after leaving the one star review below, someone called the next day and was apologetic about my experience and made things right. I had enjoyed my membership and the cardio dance classes up until my negative cancellation recurrence, which was promptly resolved. Thank you!

Cancelling your membership is purposefully inconvenient and difficult. Not only are you required to come in person to do so, but a "representative" must be there. Of course, they are only there from 9am-5pm when most individuals are working. There is no option to cancel online, via email, or over the phone either. When I called to ask about cancelling, on March 17, I was informed my membership wouldn't be cancelled until MAY. Also, no one informed me I could only cancel during certain hours of the day, so I made a trip out of my way to cancel to be told I was unable to. Deceptive and borderline illegal practices in my opinion. Would recommend going somewhere else if you don't want to deal with this headache.

New management came in. Place has been going down hill. Bathrooms don't get mobbed. Matt's in the sauna are messed up. No soap. Staff don't offer any help. Rude as well! (Not all the staff, but more then should be).Leaking roof. Equipment busted all the time. All that and more. Maybe the other locations are better but three one in merle hay. Not so good and getting worse!

I was in Des Moines for a business trip and stopped in the Genesis Merle Hay location to ask if I could purchase a guest pass to work out for a couple days. I met Steve at the front desk and he graciously offered me a free guest pass for the days that I would be in town. The facility was clean and spacious. All the equipment was nice and new and they had all the equipment you need for a complete workout. If your in the Des Moines area and are looking for a home gym, definitely check these guys out and give them a try.

I attended this gym regularly for 3 years and it was always a 5/10 facility wise. Things took forever to get fixed, and in general things were not cleaned well.

Other members here are great, but there are many better options in the area for the insane amount of money they want for a membership.

I probably would've rated the gym 3 stars before I tried to cancel my membership. When I signed up, they told me I could cancel anytime without a problem, no contract type deal.

When I tried to cancel they informed me that I had agreed to give at least 30 days notice to cancel. This is purely a money grabbing scheme. They want one more monthly payment out of you before you leave. No other subscription has this type of '30 day' cancellation policy. It's clearly just a money grab.

When discussing this with the staff they told me that I should have 'taken care of my responsibilities' before cancelling, which was both rude and insulting. There is no good reason besides profit margins to force members to give 30 days notice on a 'cancel anytime' membership. It is unethical and I would recommend others stay away from Genesis when looking for a gym in the area.

My son and I were staying in Des Moines up from Oklahoma for a ball tournament and needed a place to workout for the week. Could not have asked for better hospitality and convenience. Out of all the DSM area gyms I've been to, this one is the best, even amongst the other Genesis locations. The hours are great. It's the same people working who I see every time. Couldn’t finish the 3 day personal training because Trevor Campbell wasn’t the most comforting instructor, he would laugh when I do something wrong, and called my clothes “goofy” didn’t know a 16 year old had to show up to a gym looking like Kim kardashian but I guess.. you wanna buy me some new clothes trevor? His ego was clearly too high, I was excited to start getting into the gym but was scared to get judged, he made me feel judged. Started going to the urbandale gym even though Merle hay is only 5 minutes away due to these awkward interactions lol. Anyways other than the gym being overpriced I think it’s a pretty decent gym, once I get good at working out I’ll probably switch over to a cheaper gym.

I have been going to this gym for many years and have never had problems until recently. I go work out multiple times a week and had an issue with the "buddy pass" that I was under the assumption was part of my grandfathered membership I have had since it was Aspen. I have on many occasions been able to bring a friend to work out with me without charge. One of the employees specifically named BEN was abrasive and did not handle the situation in a professional manner at all. I was informed I do not have the "buddy pass" and he reminded me by raising his voice that this was not Aspen anymore and it was Genesis (as if I did not see the sign change on the outside of the building several months ago) I have been in multiple times and asked to see a copy of my original agreement and still have not been provided one since I need to see a manager. I have yet to find an actual manager on staff and have asked the last 3 times I have been to the gym. For such a simple request I am amazed at how big of a deal Ben made it. I have heard similar stories from other long time members of the gym about the same employee specifically being particularly troublesome and excessively abrasive about expressing gym policies to them. To be a member so long here its truly disappointing to be treated the way I was.

I really enjoyed my experience at this Genesis location. There is a good atmosphere (not excessively busy, good membership, clean) and I liked the selection of equipment. The sauna is huge. Although they don't allow you to put water onto the element, it is hot enough that it isn't a problem. Some gyms have saunas that don't feel hot enough, but this one did. This is definitely the best gym in the Urbandale area. Memberships are a little higher than average, but it's worth it if you're serious about your fitness.
