Locker rooms are molding. Sauna temp is constantly dropping and too low. Complained four different times and the still never resolved it. Unsure why they fail to address concerns and maintain equipment. This place is truly falling apart at the seam and doesn’t have good maintenance.

Been a member for years, ill be honest….mills civic locker room is so stank and disgusting on a regular basis.all the cardio machines are out dated as hell. Back near the showers. outta bounds. This place needs a deep cleaning snd renovation. Merle hay locker room is the same. Sauna all broken up and dirty. Since steve left that location its totally fell off. Hickman and south are the best locations neither have a dry sauna though.

Member for quite some time. Biggest gripe is people stacking up plates on machines from all over the gym. They are so powerful yet cant unload them and someone else unloads it. Then the weights are all by the leg presses not anywhere else since pilfered! FIX THE PROBLEM and jerk some memberships if necessary. Make people responsible for being lazy

Its a Trap Stay away! Absolutely the worst gym you can ever waste money on. The "customer service" is non existent. The setup goes like this 1. Their contract is made to be long term and filled with fees and very hard to terminate. 2. Once you sign up and discover what disappointment of a gym this place is and the unprofessional attitude from the staff..good luck ending the misery. 3. If you decide to terminate the contract and pay the ungodly fees, then the game of finding the manager starts which is a journey on its own, then dealing with printer/computer/ whatever not working, then you get sent back and forth for days.. come back tomorrow then the day after. Its the only Gym you go to get stressed out rather than workout and de-stress.

I have been a member here for a few years with my 3 kids and spouse. We utilize the parents night out and the kids club for our children. We do it to get a break from our kids and swim laps. We have had a few issues with the daycare.

1. After I had my newborn in October they don’t do any form of identification when picking up your kids. I dropped off my kids and later my husband came to get our kids (a newborn baby) the sitter said “is this one your kid?” They didn’t know who my husband was or who my kids were.

2. A few days ago I went to hop in the pool to swim laps. The daycare provider called me to return and take my child because she was fussy. I had to get out soaking wet and get my kids and couldn’t finish my work out.

3. Today was the straw that broke everything. I bought my kids in and there was a teenage boy alone with over ten toddlers and infants. Nobody was helping him. I assumed when i dropped off they were in the basketball area or bathroom. I left my 10 month old in her stroller with her bag and my toddler there. I came back 40 minutes later and my baby was in her stroller screaming her head off and he was struggling to get a small object out of this other kids mouth. I just came in and grabbed my infant and walked out. She had her swimming raft covering her face sitting on her in the stroller. I took her in the locker room and randomly she stands up and I realized she was never strapped in. She is able to stand now and crawl she could have been hurt extremely badly or worse. This one boy could not possibly take care of all of these kids. The girls at the gym was very sorry, but still no manager called me. This gym is a serious joke. It’s dirty and the kids safety is not a priority or my child would not have been sitting in a car seat on a stroller not strapped in with a bunch of objects on her alone in a corner!

4. I was sitting in the hot tub and my husband looks over and says the worst words I have ever been told. “There is human poop right next to you” I got out and immediately showered. I almost puked everywhere.

There are numerous issues that NEED figured out before someone’s kid dies! We expect a call back with a solution to this issue.

Honestly, I had a terrible experience with this gym. The staff is rude and unprofessional, and it feels like they only care about taking your money rather than providing any real service. The place is disorganized, poorly maintained, and most of the equipment is either broken or outdated. There’s no cleanliness, no proper customer service, and no sense of respect toward the members. I seriously regret joining and would never recommend this place to anyone. Complete waste of time and money never see on my life bad like them I will not back again

I see a lot of meaningless platitudes in response to negative reviews. “We take pride in maintenance” “we will continue to do our best”… oh please. One would have to be as dense as a neutron star to believe such BS.

Don’t tell your members that you care and then alter nothing. SHOW YOUR MEMBERS THAT YOU CARE BY ADDRESSING ISSUES IN A TIMELY AND EFFECTIVE MANNER P.S. Some tissues would be nice!

Filthy gym. The locker area of this gym, specifically the sauna and steam room, is in a pitiful state. Attached are pictures of the sauna floor: dried leaves, dirt, and a visible layer of grime. It hasn’t been cleaned in weeks. Instead of cleaning the floor, the staff laid permeable mats, which of course will never be removed so that the floor can be properly cleaned. A sauna and steam room that see such heavy use need to be cleaned daily. At Genesis on Mills Civic, it seems they go weeks without cleaning. Not to mention the buildup of mildew in the showers and highly trafficked tile area.
Maintenance issues that would take minutes to fix are also left for days or weeks.

Who does Genesis higher to manage and operate their facilities? Do they have any experience? Why do the employees, trainers. or owners not take any pride in their gym?

I have fixed multiple maintenance issues myself and provided receipts and accounts of my labor in the past. How was I compensated? Free guest passes! Lol It has reached a point where myself and other gym goers just roll our eyes at the level incompetence and apparent disdain Genesis has for its members.

It is very unfortunate how bad this fitness center has turned. It is so far behind in updates and the quality of up keep is absolutely horrendous. From a same sex family we need to utilize the family locker room as we have kids of both genders. I don’t think you can even call the family locker room a locker room. The floor is all time with no mats to help you stay standing when wet from the pool. The sink in there is falling apart and the entire “locker room” is inadequate. Let alone having one family locker room for how many families that attend. Thankfully the pool was deep cleaned the other day, but daily up keep is poor. I am a Certified Pool Operator and I can tell you that the daily upkeep is not being met at this club as the deck looks to never have been disinfected let alone the pool vacuumed. When in the club employees are constantly on their phone, not greeting guests, and on multiple occasions there have been no body towels or hand towels
available. Unfortunately we don’t have another fitness center to go to and this one is only a block away from our house.

We are told that a remodel is coming in the next few months and I’m hoping I can change my review when that is finished.

On a side note, management constantly tells people that they can’t help because corporate isn’t providing any help. If that is your management’s response then it goes to show how much effort they put in to even try to find a solution to your concern.

We need a fitness club in WDM that competes with others clubs like LifeTime.

New member here. I love the swimming pool, the two jacuzzis, the one on the lady’s locker room gives you privacy and peace. Perfect place to sit and relax. Terrible company! Was in contact with a manager (one lady said they fired) about cancelling my membership, she assured me they wouldn’t charge me after my contract was up. I was getting charged for months. When I reached out the lady I talked to told me they would make sure I wouldn’t get charged again and would try to give me my money back since it was the company’s fault and they fired the lady I was talking to (she stated she saw the notes on my acct) I then get charged yet again and speak to a man who wasn’t the nicest and for some reason had no idea what I was talking about-and didn’t find said notes? I was then charged AGAIN this month. They need some serious upper management change in their finance department.

If you're looking to only get a workout in and leave, then this is the place for you. What Carson has done for me is amazing. Thanks to his flexibility in creating a nutrition/diet plan for me that I am able to follow with ease, I have been able to lose 60lbs so far in 6 months. What I personally dislike about this gym is that there is nobody attending the upstairs gym. When arriving in the morning as they open you can still find the mess left from the night before. Towels not picked up, equipment not arranged nicely, weights not in their proper spots. The employees at the frontdesk don't seem to care at all as they are on their phone most times when I walk past to either check in or leave. There's many small cosmetic damages in the upstairs gym that nobody seems to care about. There's a big hole in the wall that I pointed out to the manager back in August during a tour that still needs to be patched almost 7 months later. Some equipment has a layer of dust on them as nobody is using it and doesn't get wiped off by the members. Overall the lack of attention to the facility itself is kind of off putting.

I was reading reviews. I had the same experience Emily Bowdin did last month. Due my work situation I sign month to month on contracts. I canceled my at different Genenis on April 2023 and there was no issues. I tried cancel my month to month at the Mill Civic One in April 2024 and they were going to charge me huge fee saying I was signed up wrong. I only got out of because I got an argument with threatened to go online. They also tried to make me committ when I had time again fall 2024. I joined another gym. Hopefully verbal contracts with shady gym employees are legally binding.

This gym is absolutely disgusting. I joined the gym 3 months ago and I've gotten very sick 4 times already. Enough is enough. The state of this gym is unacceptable. I wouldn't even enter the locker room since it smells absolutely terrible, and the only restrooms available are in the locker room. The machines are also barely maintained and have layers of dirt and rust over them. Members (Mostly high schoolers) come in with every sickness imaginable and will give it to you.

I honestly can't think of anything positive about this gym.

Reaction to the reviews. I dropped my membership in 2022. Aside from lack of equipment, younger guys not taking the gym seriously, the locker room being kind of cruisy and the A/C always breaking down, it seemed decent. After reading more recent reviews, it sounds like the cost is still pretty high and the atmosphere has gone even further down hill. Its a shame. Thanks for the reviews. I was looking to join a gym again but I guess i will have to pass this one up.

One star because all they do when you try to sign up for a membership is gouge you with fees. You gotta pay the monthy fee and a yearly fee, both of which make sense, but then you pay a sign up fee and then a processing fee. Why would you pay a gym to allow you to be a member so you can then pay again? If anything, they should offer you an incentive to come to their gym rather than one of their competitors. They might as well be a typical dishonest used car dealership. Quite the sociopathically run gym.

If you are looking for a “ health club” I would look elsewhere. There is never a day where everything works. The steam room never worked so they “fixed” it. It is now so hot no one can stand more than a minute. Steam rooms are supposed to be 115 to 120 degrees top, today it was 160degrees. The hot tub is fully working maybe 1 day a week. Today it was 1/2 full, the jets do not work ever, usually it’s full but not hot. One of the sinks has been out of order for months. The carpet by the door is so bad a cone sits there to warn. The showers flood so you get to stand in a puddle filled with hair that comes up from the drain. The floor in the sauna is never cleaned ( same debris has been there for months). They say they have a cleaning crew but there is no real evidence of this. I have complained so many times and I know most of the ladies in the locker room has as well. I know the answer to this will be “ thank you for the feedback, we are working on these issues,” ok so until they get these issues fixed, maybe I will issue a bill at the end of each month for the days I could not use the facilities I pay to use.

Tonight was bad. No staff on Saturday afternoon 12/28. I'm a little shocked--no staff--none up front, none in the laundry, none in the gym, none in the office nooks and crannies. The water in the hot tub room (at least the ladies) was 1/2 full. I wonder how many water's and pop tarts were taken because no one was watching. I deal with the dirtiness through therapy. I get what I pay for because the filth doesn't bother me. I accept it, embrace it and move on. It may be part of their plan to increase rates--the petri dish platinum membership is an extra $20 per month. Oh yeah, if you want to break your kids of their screen additions bring them here. The wifi doesn't work and the tvs NEVER work. EVER. It's funny that we all put up with this. I'd never work here. You're associated with failure. You are participating in a bad operation, bad culture, bad environment. You can do better. All of us look at the team members and ask "why would you work here, is there something wrong with you"? You can do better. We all can.

Not one to leave reviews, but felt taken advantage of here. Upon signing up this past summer, the manager confirmed with me that I was signing a 6-month agreement, which would end in January 2025. I was with a friend who confirmed this is what I was told as well. When I went to confirm the date that my membership would end, they told me I was actually written up for a 12-month agreement. They required me to pay a $100 cancellation fee to “break my agreement” in addition to a final membership payment of $75+. Extremely disappointed in how this situation was handled and that no grace was shown due to the fact that it was an employee’s error/miscommunication towards me.

Staff is friendly and helpful. However, I can’t remember the last time I’ve gone and there hasn’t been something broken, out of order, or closed for maintenance. There are things that still haven’t been repaired/replaced since I joined. If I see another gym-bro working out barefoot (gross) and staff not correcting it, or dudes hanging out in the locker room playing with their phones, sadly I’ll have to move on. New to the gym and joined on a limited time special offer. Weights and cardio room are nice but the other amenities are lack luster. Seems like they don’t take pride in their equipment pertaining to the kickboxing room that has a broken speed bag and the disgusting appearance of the steam room. I would be asking for my money back if I wasn’t locked in a year contract with this place. Disappointed to say the least. Also maybe clean the fan in the men’s locker room. Looks a bit dirty don’t ya think. Hopefully this place gets the message and starts giving people what they pay for….

I’ve been a member for several years, but the steam room has become a big point of disappointment! It’s always never working! Out of 5 days a week I’m there, it works maybe 1 or 2 days. Shouldn’t even advertise that there is a steam room at Mills Civic, because the women’s is non existent. It’s pretty much just a wet tiled room that smells like eucalyptus with no steam.

I had a family membership for 15 years and dropped it when covid came. Four years later I decided to join after new ownership, the place is now a dump. The men's locker room always smells of mildew, the jets in the hot tub in the men's locker room barely push out water when not under repair. The swim suit dryers in both locker rooms have been broken for almost a month.At times the pool is so cloudy that you can't see the lines. There was a shortage of towels due to "backorder" for several months, and a dryer was broken so you were recommended to bring your own towel! I would leave except for the fact that they talked me in to signing up for a year and then charged me more to not raise my rates. This used to be a wonderful health club but like so many other businesses was bought up by big company and no money has been put in to it as they put all resources in to new club in south DM. I have expressed my concerns and frustrations but have not seen any improvement. As previous people have noted something is always broken when and takes forever to get fixed.

Genesis Health club was a great asset for us getting ready for the Muay Thai Expo, both in 2023 and in 2024.

We had to cut weight for our fights, and their service was welcoming, and appreciated.
Their facilities are modern, with great conveniences such as towels, food and drink counter and many areas for a workout, including a hot tub in the men's room.
We plan on coming back every year for their fantastic services.

I wish I could of gave this gym a chance. I walked in the morning last week to sign up for a membership and the manager (female) I think her name starts with an A was arguing with a guest screaming at her and what looked like her boyfriend I over heard the conversation about a missed or late payment and she revoked the young lady's membership due to her partner. Never in the conversation was mentioned that if he was to make a payment right then and their they could continue their workout. Due to the way this couple was treated I walked out because Cleary they don't care about their guest.

Really bad situation. I wind up leaving the gym and turned in my key fob to some kid at the desk back in February. Apparently me telling the guy at the counter wasn't good enough for a cancelation I had to meet with a specialist even though the dude I turned the bar code into didn't tell me this. They have kept charging me for the last 3 months... I haven't been in the club since last July? But now in order to cancel I have to come up with the last 3 months of membership fees, seems kind of take advantagey if you ask me.

I came into this gym under a 1 year contract. I’ve came in to cancel several times but instead of helping me out and letting me cancel my membership they would pretty much tell me no and give me a long list of reasons why I shouldn’t cancel. The last attempt of canceling I was told that canceling wouldn’t make much sense, this would be the last time my account would be charged, and to come back later and cancel. I was charged after that and I got told that I will get charged one more time after signing cancellation paperwork. Would not recommend.

Jeff Burris has been my trainer at the Genesis Mills Civic location for several months. I appreciate his professionalism and keeping to the task of training while working with him. I explained my situation of wanting to gain weight and muscle and he created workouts focused on my needs. He explains what muscle groups are being activated as we are working on the exercises and how technique and form are important for the right results, correcting me when necessary. He also has workouts that challenge me to reach new levels vs staying stuck on a plateau. Jeff has given me eating tips, things to do and try on the days I can't be in the gym, or weekends when I travel. We did measurements when I started and a couple times since, and I've improved in all the categories. Some of the equipment doesnt work. The locker rooms smell terrible. You have to search the gym for equipment that should be at each station. The water in the water fountain upstairs looks milky. There are almost never clean towels in the evening, but yet you still have to pay premium price and a yearly “improvement fee”. My brother tried to freeze his account here and they still charged him in full for several months and charged him a $10 freeze fee. There are definitely better options especially for the price.

My husband loves workouts with trainer, Jeff Burris. His breathing n strength keep improving. Before working with Jeff he wouldn't workout. He was so sedentary he didn't think he could increase his heart rate without having a heart attack. Jeff motivated him, gave him info to answer his concerns n got him moving forward! Very poor customer service, I had a personal training session canceled because the trainer was no longer with Genesis Health Clubs. GHC never made me aware so showed up waiting 10-15 mins until I had said something and they said my session was canceled. They said they will comp me 3 sessions for the hassle and poor service and they have yet to add them to my account. It’s been 3 weeks and I still cannot schedule the sessions. The manager keeps saying he will add them and they still have not.

On top of all that, many things are always broken here. One of the issues which you’d think would be an easy fix, for at least the past year the outdoor lights have been out. The parking lot is very dark at night.

I’ve been going here for over a year. ALWAYS multiple items broke or not working. Steam room, dry sauna, Hot tub, showers, parking lot lights, hot water out, training equipment, etc…they don’t stay on top of maintenance or cleaning. Here are pictures I took this morning (tops of lockers). On a good note, The staff is very good and friendly, but cleaning and maintenance is absolutely HORRIBLE!

UPDATE: tops of the lockers is cleaner. Thank you. Typical Sunday tho: Hot Tub was cold, jets still don’t work (been down for couple weeks), can we please get the showers fixed? (Some have no heads & handles don’t work right…turning to hot/cold not correct), box fan…I don’t think has been cleaned in over a year, broken door secure arm. This just men’s locker room. Issues with TV, equipment upstairs broken, and vents need cleaned also. Let’s get things corrected. Thank you!

Extremely disappointed earlier this week to have the public hot tub inoperative and the men's locker room hot tub partially inoperative. I was a member of Prairie Life for nearly 20 years then left after Covid and returned recently, thinking things would be different. This was constantly a problem then, and seems like it still is. I’d give zero stars if I could. I called to make sure I could have my 9 year old son work out w me with weights and they said I could. 5 minutes into our lift, someone comes up to me and mentions he could not be up there. The general manager refused to refund my day pass fee of $25. I would have not drove 20 minutes to waste my time. Guess he needed the $25 more than I did, hopefully he’s gonna use to fix his rotten set of teeth.

Be very very careful if you shower here. They let the shower walls, black shower curtains, and shower fixtures get moldy and they don't do anything about it until someone complains. They allow cell phone use in the locker rooms even though the signs say they don't. Most of the paper towels dispensers don't work.

There is at least one toilet with a bad wax ring, so the restroom area smells like sewage.

The locker room is normally around 80-86°, and right now the ventilation seems to be broken in there completely.

The hot tub is usually out of order, has missing tiles, and often the chemicals are way out of whack.

The family locker room gets water all over the floor from the shower.

Also don't stand on the floor in the locker rooms in your bare feet, and I also wouldn't recommend sitting on the benches. It's all covered in carpet in its absolutely gross, I don't know when the last time it's been cleaned. Really wish they would just get rid of the carpet.

Rust falling in the pool from the heat ducts above. I like the setup of weights area upstairs it's nice and large, and half walls around it and through the middle give more places to do different workouts and break up the space nicely, and the walking/running track.

However much I want to love this place, i just can't. There are often teenagers roughhousing in the weight areas (shoving each other into other people's way, etc), congregating around machines they aren't even using, lounging on the tables where they keep the towels, just being obnoxious. In over a year, I've never seen any of the many trainers stop and confront them.

(Yeah, we've cancelled our membership...)

Genesis, you need to stop trying to build new facilities and maintain the existing ones.

I’ve been training with Jeff Burris at Genesis Health Club at the Mills Civic location in Des Moines for about 5 weeks and getting some initial impressive results (lost 10 lbs and 12 in) in that period of time.
I was a skeptic and not a gym enthusiast at all but I need to loose weight and get in better shape overall. Therefore personal training, coaching and encouragement with Jeff. I have goals to accomplish and Jeff is the best trainer to help me meet my goals. He’s tough but encouraging and pushes you to do better than your best. I simply cannot accomplish weight loss and fitness on my own.
My challenge will be to continue to lower my numbers but more important is to maintain the weight loss consistently over time and eventually on my own.

No communication. No social media post. No email. Nothing. But they did have enough time to post about their staffs Halloween costumes. A complete disregard to provide services they advertise. 5 stars for the personal trainers and their knowledge but 1 star for customer services. There were at least couple of instances where I just had to shake my head since I became a member almost a year ago.
First, if for some reason your gym has an issue and something breaks, and you have no running or drinking water, either close the gym or provide water for free for people who are coming to work out. Instead they were expecting their members to go and pay $2 for their overpriced water in the fridge, absolutely unacceptable. Second, I have signed my for personal training and also been a member for over a year and there was an instance where my mother came to live with me and wanted to come in for a month to the gym before leaving. I asked them to work with me, maybe a temp pass or some kind of discounted membership instead of full year long commitment. They basically didn’t will to flex or work with me at all, so I just told them I might void my membership. They didn’t care. The next thing I know they are giving away all kinds of discounts and introductory specials few weeks later. Just overall, doesn’t give me a good feeling, so not sure how much longer I will stay with them.if thats how they value existing customers and especially the ones who spend thousand of dollars a year, then no thanks.

Phenomenal facilities and great staff. From the moment you walk in everyone’s very friendly and helpful. I am looking and trying gyms in the area to find the right fit for my schedule and the trial passes was a simple process. No pushy sales people they truly want you to make the best decision for you. Not the best gym in town by any means, but a good one. Here are pros and cons:

Pros
- Daycare 2 hours a day. Your kids will get tons of interaction with other kids and adults.
- Indoor and outdoor pool are really nice
- DL platforms are nice and spacious
- certain points of the day are relatively slower like 11-3 so you can get whatever equipment you want

Cons
- Cleanliness is in slow decline post-covid. Most weights are never cleaned by guests or staff. There has been a leak upstairs for a few weeks and it hasn’t been taken care of.
- the cafe is never open when it says it’s supposed to be
- indecent dressing women and men in the evenings. Likely a pro for most people but not for me.
- high schoolers in the evenings are typically disrespectful toward other guests. Hogging equipment, hanging out in large crowds, loud. Also most are indecently dressed as well.

I have been to gyms all over the country due to being in the military. This is by far my favorite. With the exception of a few pieces you'd only expect to find at a hardcore BB or PL gym, they have everything you could want. It's never been too crowded that I felt I couldn't get a good session in. I really appreciated the indoor track during the winter months. I never used the pool, sauna, hot tub, or basketball courts...but they have them! Special shout-out to team member Thomas. He learned my name and it made me feel welcome whenever he'd say "hi." He also saved my workout one day by letting me borrow his headphones. Stellar staff, stellar facility, and a great price. Also, it actually feels like a gym rather than the overpriced social club for people who care more about their fit than their lifts, Lifetime Fitness.
