Ash and Anthony run a phenomenal atmosphere with a close connection to all their members. They care about putting everyone’s best interest into the gym with a wide range of all equipment. They’ve expanded a ton in a small amount of time and I always enjoy coming back to lift. Always a high recommendation from me

Me and my boyfriend have been traveling to Ankeny, Iowa for the past three years, and every time we’re in town we make sure to contact Anthony and Ashley for a week pass. Every single time, they welcome us with open arms and make us feel right at home. For me, the thing I love most is the gym culture it truly feels like one big family. Everyone is so friendly, accepting, and encouraging, which makes every workout that much better.
We also can’t say enough about the equipment and the variety they offer—it’s top-notch and perfect for any type of training. We’re from Grand Island, Nebraska, and out of all the gyms we’ve been to over the years, Iron Chapel continues to stand out as one of our absolute favorites.
On top of all that, we can’t forget to mention the gym dog we absolutely love getting in some cuddles every visit. It’s just another special touch that makes Iron Chapel feel so unique and welcoming. We’re so grateful for everything Anthony, Ashley, and the Iron Chapel family do to create such an amazing environment.

Trained at the Iron Chapel barbell today. It’s an impressive facility with all the equipment you need for power lifting, bodybuilding and strength training. Spacious rooms with quality equipment. The warmest welcome by Chubbs the gym dog and I was also happy it is a family friendly gym. Thanks to Anthony and Ashley Wilson for the thoughtful tour and welcome to their strength community. I’m looking forward to training here and recommend to anyone coming to the greater Des Moines - Ankeny area. This isn’t your conventional gym it’s elite!

I’ve been at Iron Chapel for almost a year since moving to Iowa from California. It was hard to think of joining a new gym as I really loved my old place. However, I have loved the vibe and community at ICB (although I am a loner and tend to keep to myself). I felt welcomed right away. ICB has great trainers and amazing equipment. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their strength in general or become a champion powerlifter. 💪🏻

We’ve been coming to ICB for 3 months since we moved to Iowa and it’s been one of the best gym communities we’ve been a part of. This gym is equipped for experienced and amateur lifters alike and you’re likely to find a helpful community to give you pointers or a spot if you need it. 10/10 would recommend!

Joined ICB this year in May. Iron Chapel Barbell is more than a gym it’s a community. If you want to accomplish your goals this is the place to start.
A wide range of equipment and fitness styles in this gym.
I have been to my fair share of gyms and this gym has the right atmosphere to succeed.

7/29/25 UPDATE: Anthony and Ashley were faced with a major, unexpected flooding issue and still had the gym open within 24 hours. That is incredible customer service...Normally, I don't post reviews, happy customers often don't, while unhappy ones make sure to voice their opinions. But as a former professional/collegiate athlete and serious lifter, I want to give a shout-out to Iron Chapel. This gym has it all without feeling too specialized or generic. Its welcoming to everyone who seeks to improve on their fitness. Great owners, amazing facility. 5 stars, highly recommended.

Ashley Wilson is the best trainer around! Through her incredible support and guidance during my recovery from hip surgery, I am now able to do things I haven’t done in years. Like most women my age I was finding out that the motto “use it, or lose it” was so true. So about a year ago I started working out with Ashley. Basically starting at zero. I had been struggling with hip pain due to arthritis for about 7 years and the stronger I started to get, the more my hip problems were becoming clear. So about 6 months into training, I had total anterior hip replacement surgery. Prior to surgery Ashley got me into the best position possible to really be ahead of the curve for recovery. Day 5 after surgery I was back with Ashley and from the first session, it was clear I was in the hands of a true professional who genuinely cares about her clients’ well-being.
Following my surgery, I experienced not only physical limitations but also a significant loss of confidence. I felt restricted and worried about even regaining my pre-surgery activity levels. However, Ashley designed a comprehensive and personalized rehabilitation program that addressed my unique needs and helped me gradually rebuild my strength and fitness.
Her expertise in injury recovery along with her encouraging attitude made a world of difference. Each session, she challenged me to push my boundaries while ensuring I felt safe and supported. As a result of her attentive guidance and tailored workouts, I began to regain not only my strength but also my confidence. I am amazed at how quickly I progressed; activities I once thought impossible became achievable.
Thanks to Ashley, I was able to return to activities that I love, such as hiking and biking, and I can now keep up with my grandkids, creating cherished memories without limitations. Our sessions not only improved my physical health but also revitalized my enthusiasm for life. I feel stronger, more capable, and more energetic than ever before.
Beyond the physical transformations, Ashley has instilled in me a newfound confidence that extends beyond the gym. I am building a more empowered mindset. She’s teaching me to approach challenges with positivity and determination-something I have always struggled with. This journey has not only improved my health but has also enriched my life in countless ways.
I wholeheartedly recommend Ashley to anyone seeking a personal trainer, especially for recovery or injury rehabilitation. Her knowledge, compassion, and dedication are unparalleled, and I am eternally grateful for the profound impact she has made on my life.

Starting a new fitness journey can be both exciting and intimidating, especially when stepping into a new gym for the first time. After 20 years of exploring various fitness facilities, I recently found my new home at Iron Chapel and I couldn't be more thrilled to share my experience.
From the moment I walked through the doors, I was greeted by the warm and welcoming owners who truly care about their members. Their friendly demeanor instantly eased the initial nerves that often accompany a new gym environment. It’s refreshing to be in a place where the staff genuinely wants to see you succeed.
The facility itself is impressive, equipped with everything you could possibly need to achieve your fitness goals. Whether you’re into bodybuilding, powerlifting, or simply a lifelong fitness journey, Iron Chapel has it all. The variety of equipment ensures that you can mix up your routine and keep things interesting.
One of the standout features of this gym is the sense of community. Despite the initial intimidation of being in a new space, I quickly found that everyone here is supportive and encouraging. It’s motivating to be surrounded by individuals who are all striving to improve themselves, creating an atmosphere that pushes you to do your best.
Cleanliness is another priority at Iron Chapel. The bathrooms and gym area are consistently well-maintained, which adds to the overall positive experience. A clean environment not only enhances your workout, but also shows that the owners take pride in their facility.
If you’re looking for a gym that combines a welcoming atmosphere, top-notch equipment, and a strong sense of community, I highly recommend giving Iron Chapel a try. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just starting out, you’ll find the support and motivation you need to reach your fitness goals.

Having been a member of many gyms in the area at some point, I have been member of IBC for a couple months. I have been extremely impressed so far with the gym and the community in the gym. In evaluating a gym, what do I look for:
* How clean is it?
* What barbells do they have? How well cared for are the barbells? Specialty barbells - SSB, Axles, Squat, Strongman equipment?
* Do they have the equipment I need to train?
* How cramped is the gym? Are you always waiting for the single bench?
* Do they have a Monolift?
* How well cared for is the cardio equipment?
For the most part, IBC excels at everything I just mentioned. Gym bathrooms -- something typically disgusting or barely passable - generally always clean. Wide range of barbells and brands, I'm not a lifting diva, but if I was only Kabuki, Texas, or Rogue person, I'd be fine here. Okie DL bar - out of luck.
My trainer Jake Harre made the jump to the gym, and you can tell the owners are really trying to expand to meet the new Strongman audience. A new expansion is on tap that should help that vision, making it the best Strongman gym in the area. Being able to train Atlas Stones again will be great.
Bench-wise they have 3 bench setups with safeties -- plus the rack rigs. There are currently 2 full racks and a monolift to help with meet prep. I have never been not able to train due to someone else being on the equipment or DL platforms. Facility-wise, there are few things to complain about.
What won't you find here:
* Rows of cardio equipment -- There's treadmills, an elliptical, rower, and Ski Erg, but not fleets of them.
* A lot of Calibrated plates -- just mostly solid iron plates and couple sets of bumpers. (There are a number of 20kg plates, but that's it.)
What will you find here:
* Dedicated, knowledgeable owners and training staff - with multiple champions/titles to their names
* Welcoming community who meet where you are at
- want to train by yourself in the corner, great
-want to hit a PR and need a little hype, they're there for you too
-Need a strong spotter? Someone strong is generally around as well willing to help
The gym is generally what you make it. However, seeing "Deadcember" get done here and multiple PRs be hit gives just inkling if you have fitness goals, they can be met here.

Alot of their reviews were posted when they opened/before, and then after I originally posted this review the owner asked Members, and people who had only been to the gym a few times to spam the business with shallow 5 star reviews. You can clearly see this if you bother reading any. The owners also took down several negative reviews, even though some were valid and from truly disgruntled guest.
Here is a real review of the gym.
Fair warning the owner Anthony is very bipolar and will snap on kids/guest, post them on the gym's social media to call them out on gym misuse, ie chalk in the air, etc. Just be careful sending any of your kids to this facility. Without the owners being factored in, or the price, the gym is a 3 out of 5. Factoring in those things brings that score down to 1 out of 5.
Shortlist with pros/cons:
Pro or Con depending on your beliefs: They are very LGBTQ+ friendly.
Pro: They have plenty of kabuki bars.
Pro: Many people there make up for the rude owners.
Pro: Bathrooms are kept very clean
Pro: Not crowded with cardio machines, and they have outdoor equipment.
—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Con: They discourage members from helping each other. God help your kid if their form is off and they get hurt.
Con: The owners will make you move equipment if they need it for a client, had it happen while I was setting up for squat.
Con: Very rude owners who treated me horribly after a few months, not once did I see a client who paid for their training get treated the way I did.
Con: DL platforms are regularly pee’d on, and not cleaned enough, some of the wood platforms have started turning yellow.
Con: Most of their equipment is very dated, and some are missing nuts/bolts. Hopefully they fix it before someone gets hurt.
Con: They have a dog that sheds, be aware if you have allergies. The owners will treat you badly if you do not embrace the dog, happened to me, I would get dirty looks when I refused to pet the dog, sorry, but I do not want to be stuffed up for a week.
Con: The owners are disingenuous, and their recent award for best trainers in DSM only happened because they hounded their clients to vote for them, I overheard the conversations.
Con: Their training is way too pricey, and under-delivers in my opinion. This is most likely due to under qualified trainers. I witnessed their clients do poorly at several meets just while I was there.
Con: They have low-hanging wires in the gym, it is low enough to get caught on in some places. They have fiber glass insulation sticking out of one of their walls that hasn't been fixed in months. If its fixed then great!
Con: if you have a child that wants to go there it should be noted that there is usually no one who is making sure the gym is being kept safe at night, and sometimes unsafe chaos happens inside the gym after 7/8pm due to the lack of supervision, I personally witnessed this several times.
(In response to the owner)
Note: I spent 4 years studying law, it isn't slander when it is true. I will redact anything you bring up that is untrue. Which would be nothing, but go for it.
What you did was however libel. If you would like to state what gyms I have been kicked out of other than getting the boot from icb for stating my mind and calling you out over text for what I listed above, and that horrible incident cursing out teenage boys, to which many told me they felt very uncomfortable and intimidated by. In fact, now that I recall I cancelled my membership. Spoke my mind, and got retroactively kicked...
Also perhaps filling me in on what imaginary business I own would be cool! If not, don't state lies, it is dishonest. Lastly, it is ridiculous that you cannot own up to your own mistakes/issues!

I've been working out with Ashley in group and private training sessions since April and I love it. I have a history of quitting the various fitness journeys I've tried over the last 30 years, but I'm going seven months strong with Ashley and I'm hooked! Iron Chapel Barbell is the best environment with the most knowledgeable (and fun) owners/trainers and it offers such a sense of community. I've made good friends and met fantastic people there, and the equipment is top notch. I've learned so much about nutrition, weight lifting, and my body; my body has changed so much and I'm so much stronger. I can't say enough good things about Ashley, Anthony, and Iron Chapel Barbell. It really is the best. Oh, and Chubs the gym dog is really the star of the show there 🐶

As a medical doctor, I have spent the greater part of my life advising people on the benefits and necessities of working out. Well, it turns out that walking the walk is just as challenging for physicians. I have gone through the myriad of personal trainers, you tube videos, more gym memberships that went unused then I care to admit. But recently my 16yr old teen asked me to join Iron Chapel, and thought "sure why not, I am a supportive parent".
I may have joined for my child, but I will forever be a member for me. The Iron Chapel is unlike any other gym I have ever joined. For years, personal trainers were doing whatever fad workouts existed at the time.
Anthony Wilson is hands down the best, most informed, supportive trainer I have ever had. (I am a 51 yr old woman).
I have spent years working with med students, and medical residents, so to have a trainer with the science background and an actual knowledge of human physiology, anatomy, kinesiology and to be able to translate that to actual work outs, is absolutely phenomenal. Ashley and Anthony truly want to set their clients up for success. They see your potential, they want you to get stronger, day by day, year by year.
And for any parents out there, I cannot express enough the wonderful, safe atmosphere they have created for young people. It is without any exaggeration that I say, your child will benefit tremendously, both as an athlete and young adult. Ashley is an amazing role model for young women.
THEIR INTEGRITY, COMMITMENT & WORK ETHIC IS SECOND NONE.
You will never regret joining the IRON CHAPEL FAMILY.

My 17 yr old son trains year round at ICB and is a 3 sport athlete. ICB has helped him build a solid foundation to excel in all 3 sports. Ashley and Anthony are AMAZING!! They have personalized sport-specific workouts emphasizing proper technique and injury prevention exercises. This has increased his speed, agility, strength, power, endurance as well as mental toughness! Ashley and Anthony have also guided him on his nutrition/supplements which is a huge BONUS!! ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND ICB to anyone looking for a personalized program with top notch trainers, that take pride in their facility and genuinely care about your experience!!

I recently joined Iron Chapel Barbell. Thus far my experience has been nothing less than phenominal.
I have lifted at several gyms over the years, both commercial gyms and ones geared more towards powerlifting. Iron Chapel is definately the top in my book. Clean facilities, showers, plenty of deadlift bars and platforms, etc.
I would highly recommend checking it out if you are looking for a new gym.

From what I have seen and experienced Iron Chapel Barbell (ICB) has a good start up reputation for them however, there was a night I was there and the owner had come in to address a group of guys lifting and minding their own business. From what I overheard and found out one of the guys was giving pointers to one or two of the young guys and the owner called the whole group over (12-15) people, and started to talk calmly to them and once someone tried to get a word in the owner started to lose his cool, shouting and cursing in front of the whole gym. Most of the younger people who were there were in high school (14-18) and I personally didn’t see that as a professional act to do in a general sense.

There's definitely a reason this place just won Des Moines Best Local Place to Workout! There couldn't be a better place to get a workout in. There is a variety of workout equipment for every work style or skill level.
The members are fantastic too. Everyone is super supportive of each other. Lots of folks here train for heavy power-lifting but they make even the novice strength trainer feel welcome. I personally go just for casual strength training and have never felt out of place or unwelcome because the members are so friendly and supportive.
The trainers (Anthony and Ashley) are the best - hence why they won and were runner up for Best Local Personal Trainer. They are always there, especially during peak workout hours, either working with clients or talking with members. They really care about the folks that go to their gym, especially seeing them lift safely.
Last but not least, it wouldn't be a complete review on this fantastic gym without discussing the "gym manager" - Chubbs, the gym dog! On occasion, Anthony and Ashley have their dog there and it's the highlight of my day. It's so nice to walk in the door and have Chubbs come over to say hi. He's such a sweetie and loves all the members. As a dog parent myself, I shower him with pets. It's not a requirement of the gym though to pet him - and he is very understanding of this if members aren't as eager to give him all the pets.

There is nothing like Iron Chapel in the DSM metro - the owners (Anthony & Ashley) have years of experience in athletic training and are record holders in powerlifting. You won’t find a better community and facility to reach your fitness goals!
Pros:
-24/7 Access
-CLEAN!
-Dog mascot
-Great Culture
-Assortment of equipment from cardio to lifting
-Did I mention clean?
-No hexagon lights
-No one “bro-sciencing” you, Anthony/Ashley will help you or make suggestions on how to improve your form because well, they’re trained/certified professionals - my first few months Anthony found a program right for me and my B/S/D has all gone up.

A newly-opened fitness facility in Ankeny is a hidden gem. The owners, married couple Anthony and Ashley, are educated fitness and personal training professionals. Their knowledge encompasses all phases of life including young high schooler’s fitness needs, all-around body builders, 70 year olds with double joint replacements to anyone else who wants to maintain or needs to lose weight and eliminate the aches and pains that come w/ age. They uniquely apply their vast knowledge and tailor workouts to each individual’s needs. They are impressive. Their new space is complete with the latest new equipment and is an inviting, friendly place to spend your time improving your body and mind.
I can’t say enough about Anthony and Ashley (she holds several WORLD weight lifting records!) - compassionate and intelligent - They are committed to helping you reach your goals with encouragement and a plan you can realistically reach. We drive from West Des Moines to work w/ these two and it’s one of the best investments we’ve made.
