NIP Fitness: A full review of the gym. The equipment here is quite nice. They have a good selection of machines, but there are a few small issues I have.
CONS: My main issue is with the hack squat machine. A typical hack squat machine will have shoulder pads and supports so you don’t go flying out of the machine, as the supports give you something to push into. This hack squat machine does not, making it feel easy to injure yourself on.
This gym has an okay amount of machine, with no more than one of any given machine (not including smith machines, there are 2), but that’s okay considering the smaller size of this gym. There is a nice selection of cardio, and I really like the spacing of equipment in this gym. There are plenty of lockers available to use by anybody, but they do not have a lock. This is fine though. I have a couple smaller issues with some aspects of the machines that I will now discuss. The shoulder press machine (plate loaded variation) is VERY confusing and actually dangerous to set up. I’ve heard multiple people say that they’ve crushed their fingers whilst attempting to adjust this machine. The leg extension machine only goes up to 200 pounds, and I’ve found that the circular padding on the machine often bruises my shins. The machine tricep pushdown (has a preacher curl set up, but you push it down instead) hardly works your triceps at all, because I find that your core/ abdominal region fails far before your triceps do. One of my larger issues is that there isn’t enough benches/incline benches. During the busiest hours of the day, you would be VERY lucky to find a single open incline bench. Some machines creak heavily when using them, but that doesn’t personally bother me. There are a couple machines that I feel should be in this gym, yet are not. A few examples would be a hack squat with shoulder pads, a sitting leg curl, hammer strength chest press, and a proper machine chest supported row (there is one, but only for the lats, and cannot be adjusted to target upper back). Also, a much more minor problem would be that some of the small picture that are next to some machines that show what muscles are being targeted are just completely wrong. One example of many is that the lat pull-down machine shows that only the bicep and arm is being worked. That about sums up my issues with the main part of the gym.
PROS: I would say this gym has a lot more pros than cons to it. This gym is kept is pretty nice condition, and all of the machines work as intended (excluding the shoulder press). There are plenty of dumbbells and they go all the way up to 150 pounds. It is open twenty four hours with staff available throughout the hours posted on their website. The prices are not terrible, not great, but I would say it’s worth it. The staff generally very friendly and helpful (excluding one person in particular). The bathrooms are kept clean, the equipment is never dirty, and most people who go here bring shoes and clean off equipment as instructed. I myself do not go into the downstairs area nor the classroom (room with punching bags and stationary bicycles), so I cannot judge them. The general atmosphere is that of a normal gym. Nobody is judging you, nobody is watching you, and in my experience, the people who go there consistently are not creepy or strange. There are plenty of options for cardio, with at least a dozen treadmills, multiple stair masters, some elipticals, plenty of bikes, and 2 cardio rowing machines. There are plenty of bar attachments all located in a large container, containing almost any grip you can ask for. I’d say that this is a very nice gym for its size, and that the problems I have with this gym are quite easily solvable. Overall, good gym.

Great place to workout. I live on the East side of Mason City, and wanted a new location to workout at. That's a benefit of being an NIP member, there's 3 different locations available. A good mix of cardio and strength machines, also free weights. Inside their classroom there's some punching bags, alongside some stationary bicycles. For an extra fee, there's some massaging machines and cryotherapy. They offer smoothies and rice bowls at this location as well as the East Mason location.

Whenever I'm in town visiting family I love that I can drop in to NI for $5. Workout, massage, and lunch is perfect 'me' time. The staff is extremely helpful. They offer supplements, cryotherapy, hydromassage, foam rolling, group classes, personal training, turf, and any machine you possibly could need. The basement is my favorite spot because I can get a bit more space to move for freestyle work. For everything they offer, it's absolutely worth being a member if you are local.
