11/2/2025 - Saturday morning - GYM NOT OPEN. THIS PLACE IS SO FRUSTRATING. People in their cars waiting, people standing outside the door. Supposed to open at 7:00 a.m., it's 9:00 a.m. Do better!!! People pay for your services. Especially on the weekends!

I have to give credit where credit is due. This place has turned it around 100%. Staff is friendly, courteous, and most important: THEY SHOW UP! Well done Planet Fitness.
I will not give 5 stars, though, until the gym is back to 24/7 hours of operation like the other Planet Fitness' in the area. Those of us who have to be at work early, this makes all the difference. Membership is definitely up, this place is crowded. No reason this shouldn't go back to pre-COVID hours.

This place is great all the planet fitnesses. Are this one has good showers and I finally tried the massage chairs that are comfortable as well. I have the black VIP access membership so I can go to all of the ones in the country and do anything and everything as well as take one person cost less than a dollar a day, about 25 bucks a month, I'm loving it. I use it to take showers when I'm on the road. It saves me lots of money. Other than spending ten or twenty dollars at the truck stop

I use to love coming to this gym however they had a change of staff a couple of months back and ever since then the place has gone downhill. The women’s showers are consistently dirty, I can see the same grime that’s been sitting there for weeks. It doesn’t seem they can keep staff anymore as it’s a new person every week that’s there in the mornings. Then I show up today at 6 AM and the gym is closed without any reason, it appears staff just didn’t show up. If it doesn’t turn around soon I’ll be switching to a completely different gym franchise.

I never go to this location but I did and was not disappointed. I was there late, at about 8:45 and the staff was friendly to me even though it was almost closing time! All the equipment was clean as well as locker room. I wish there was another adjustable cable machine but other than that everything was great

This location and what it has to offer checks all of the boxes for me with little exception. I must also say that Christian at the front desk has always been punctual and welcoming to everyone. Haven’t been very many times but I went up there this morning on 7/23 At 6 A.M. and they were closed! I wouldn’t be upset if there was some kind of notice or something on the door but there was nothing! No reason why they were closed it looked to me as if the staff just decided not to show up!! I’m extremely disappointed! Your hours say 5 AM- 10 PM on weekdays but that doesn’t seem to be true?? There were multiple other people waiting in the parking lot as well it’s really terrible because I was very excited to be living closer to a PF so I could workout in the mornings but you guys aren’t open when you’re supposed to be in very confused?

Incredibly dirty facility compared to other PF locations in the metro. I am disgusted at the condition of this place. To put it into perspective I was here two months ago on a regular basis- then went to Ankeny for awhile. I was closer to this one yesterday so stopped in for a quick workout and the same dirty rag that was in the corner of the men’s locker room was still there. Urine and filth cover the floors, toilets and other areas of the locker room. Take a look at the floors and partitions in the locker rooms for a horror show. Dirty equipment. Black Card member benefits include tanning and massage beds- which never seem to work. Move PF out of this space and put something else here.

Update: recently T.V.’s don’t connect both wirelessly and wired (all static). I’ve asked two different staff members and I get nowhere. One just looked at me and said “I don’t know”, the other said he would let management know.
Also two TV’s no longer work and there is one labeled HGTV but doesn’t play that network. What’s going on with this location??
I don’t think it’s asking too much to be able to watch and hear the TV’s.

Some guy on Saturday afternoon 4/26/25 was coughing off and on the whole time I was there with no attempt to cover his mouth. I do not go to the gym to get coronavirus or the flu. Staff should have asked him to at least cover his mouth if he's going to hack all over everything.

Went in to freeze my account due to having surgery. No one told me I was gonna get the annual fee taken from account when freezing it. Called about it and they said some employees don’t know the policy as well. Seems like something they need to work on then. Just know that if you freeze your account you will get money taken out.

This place would be perfect if it weren’t for the water leaks in the men’s lockers room. There is visible mold growth on the ceiling tiles and water damage on others. Occasionally they seem to replace the moldy tiles but do not address the water leak going on. I have allergy flare ups when I come here and will not be using this location anymore

This location has a good amount of equipment considering it's a small location. Showers have hot water unlike the Urbandale location. The employees are super nice and helpful.

Now for the negatives... The are for functional exercises and stretching is TINY. Only about 3 people can fit in there on mats, and then one of them will be blocking the equipment. The weekend hours aren't nearly long enough. Their leg abduction/adduction machines are very strange, the pads and foot bars are just all wrong. Just a weird design.

It is a great, low cost option. Be aware of the extra fees. It is higher yearly fees and monthly fees than it used to be. Very few people actually clean the machines. You might want to bring a towel to sit on. The last year often their internet goes down and you have to sign in on paper and the massage tables do not always work. They used to have a bagel day and a pizza day but no longer have free food days. They say there is a trainer who can show you how to do things but I haven’t seen anyone instructing others. It is one of the only affordable gyms anymore.

Planet Fitness in West Des Moines is a great gym. I have a Black Card Membership that gets me and a guest access to the gym everyday. It also includes tanning and the massage beds. For this price it is totally worth it. I am not scared when walking in to this gym and there is always room to workout. Great place!

Trying them again after a 1 year screw up on my black card as they debited my account and the membership went to another member. I left 5 messages for a manager never to be heard from . Looked up franchise owner on Iowa Secretary of State and sent an email to them. I did purchase a membership on 12.3p.23 to see what happens I can always cancel.
Hopefully all will be good.
Also applied for a parttime job as they indicated are hiring.

I previously gave this gym a 5-star rating, largely because of the class I attend, which was led by a capable trainer. I am lowering this to 2 stars, because there has been an unexpected sharp decrease in my satisfaction. Our trainer, John, left to take a better job and the management at PF has made it very clear that they will not be replacing him. Although they advertise the class I attend, and despite the fact that my original agreement refers to a trainer, they have decided against hiring someone. There are no trainers employed at this gym. There are typically four people behind the desk when I arrive, but none are allowed to answer questions about workouts or equipment, nor are they allowed to help adjust a machine because they aren’t trainers. The local manager is nice, but is clear that his superior refuses to hire a trainer. When I asked about it, explaining that my contract specified a trainer, I was told that I needed to scan a code on the equipment and watch a video of someone else working out. Not acceptable.

I happened to be hurt by the machine while doing exercise and i struggled to walk to the customer service desk where their was a guy whom i talked to around 10Am this morning 9/8/23 though after he heard i was hurt, he a summed and started attending the customers who were coming in for gym. I had to call 911 for help while i was extremely in pain that was a bad experience i hard with planet fitness instead of them helping out.

Planet Fitness in West Des Moines, IA has been billing me a late fee each month for the past several. Very weird since they take it out of my account. Manager cannot anything to refund it????? Said I had to come in to fix it??? I went n 3 different times and left a note for the manager who knew who I was and never contacted me. Spoke with ABC billing company and they can’t refund and said I have to get it from my club. Not a lot of money but hate getting scammed with no communication from such a big company.

So they upgraded their equipment...so now only tiny people can use their machines. Embarrassing that this is what they call an upgrade. I'm only 6ft 1in, and can no longer use almost every machine I used to. I also feel bad for the smaller people that fit their machine due to the giant PLASTIC handles they put on the machines that feel cheap and you can tell will break.
So let's get into it.
Pec fly machine now completely fixed bars that used to flow with you, awkward seat adjustments, free spinning plastic handles
Calf extensions now are angled upward standing position that feels like it's tearing into your lower back when using
Seated curls so closed to my body now I gave up in the middle of my second set, again free spinning plastic handles
Shoulder press with seat as far down as it goes handles touch my shoulders and are to close to use for the ones I use
Lat pulls can't sit down on the seat because of the leg holders. Either in place with butt not able to sit on seat cause can't get close enough or to high and floating off seat with the bar
I could go on but let's just say my last day will now be very soon

3.5 stars for this gym.
It is small, and people seemed to be cramped on top of each other. It was very warm over by the free weights, maybe a fan is needed to move the air. The black card spa is dated, but efficient. The locker room was ok, a little dirty, needs some attention, and someone left a bunch of stuff in one of the changing stalls. Staff was friendly!

Love this place! Always clean with friendly staff. They have a great personal trainer too! Who knew for such a low price you really can have it all. They recently got a new hydrotherapy bed and it is top of the line! I love that I can knock out cardio, upper AND lower body with the choice of machines or free weights. 10/10 would recommend

I came in as a guest and was immediately greeted by Cody! Now, I’ve been to a lot of gyms and I was only here to work out with a friend, but Cody made the experience so welcoming and pleasant. When I had questions he answered them, and he even detailed the perks and such. Because of that, I scheduled to start a membership this Friday! I came in July 20th to cancel my membership and was walked through the process. I assumed all was good and went on about my life until I got charged for another month of use afterwards. I called and was not helped much by an employee. I assume the employee told the manager and the manager (Quinton) actually called me and refunded me back to my last check in! 1000% thrilled with the customer service from him and happy that someone offered help!

This Planet Fitness is fine. The staff is always friendly, greets me when I walk in and says goodbye when I leave. The staff is always cleaning and hustling around. What annoys me about the gym are the sinks in the women’s locker rooms. No water comes out of the first faucet, there’s a stream that spits water everywhere that comes out of the middle faucet and the last facet has a trickle that’s comes out of it. The water streams in these locker room sinks have never been great (I’ve been a member off and on since they first opened). This week I finally mentioned to the three men working behind the counter about the water streams in the women’s locker rooms and they said it has been mentioned before and proceeded to give men reasons and excuses as to why they haven’t been fixed. I didn’t understand any of them. Anyway, it’s a cheap gym and clean overall with a nice staff and friendly members. It would be great if the sinks in the women’s locker rooms worked as well, but I guess you can’t have everything for $22/month.

This morning I called over about my membership fee and the girl who answered the phone was very rude. She stated that she was a manager and continued to be rude, and when I asked for her name she refused to give it to me stating she gave it to me at the beginning of the call. Rather she provided it at the beginning of the call or not being a manager she should not have been rude and more helpful than anything. If this is the type of management you have working here. I def do not want the membership.
