We called ahead of time because we were driving from Ames to find out their lap swim hours and they told us 1 to 8 pm. We get here and they tell us it's 4:30 to 7 pm. Then they act like no one could've told us that. It's ridiculous. I'm never bothering with the place again.

Bad side- “new” workers aren’t so nice.
Also the price is more than 3 times a Planet fitness and planet fitness are open 24 hours 4 days a week, and even open on holidays. On Labor Day it says open, you make the drive and people are waiting outside for them to never open. There was a “small” pay increase so customers pay more but you’ll expect the gym to get better. It doesn’t.

I try to never leave negative reviews in my community, but I have had an awful experience with this swimming pool. I do not think it can be considered a community pool because it's always half closed for swim teams. The schedule isn't up to date so I often drive all the way there to be surprised about a closure or limited lanes. Why should I pay full price for a pool that is barely open? In addition, I find it incredibly frustrating that it is the ONLY Olympic sized pool in Des Moines, yet they have people swim horizontally at half length. I know the Y is short staffed for life guards, but please do better or don't call yourself a community facility.

We had a fantastic time at this year's regionals meet on March 15th & 16th, watching the kiddos swim. What an awesome YMCA! The Dolphins did an amazing job, and we’re so proud of them. Great pool and great team!

This location is incredible, especially with the Skywalk that lets you get in and out without stepping outside—it's one of only two gyms in the U.S. that connects this way. The building is huge with two massive pool areas, well-spaced training equipment, two full basketball courts, and 10 racquetball/handball courts. The mechanical workout equipment is a bit dated but still functional.

Impressive doesn’t even begin to cover it! This YMCA takes up an entire city block. The machines are plentiful and in great shape. There's even a bouldering wall, several racquetball courts, and a large gym. The aquatic center is unlike any other YMCA I’ve seen—truly impressive. The locker rooms are posh and feature a sauna as well.

It's a nice gym with the proper weight room equipment. However, the weekend hours are terrible. Management needs to keep it open past 4pm. There's enough people who are forced out at closing time to justify the manpower requirements to extend the hours.

I waited an hour for Misty to give me a financial assistance application. She told me I have a behavior disorder and threatened to call the police on me for loitering. I feel she discriminated against because of my gender orientation. I overheard a rumor, this gym sucks more than POTUS Herbert Hoover.

The pool itself is amazing. But for some reason, the pool hours are never posted correctly. Online may say one thing, and when you walk in the door, something else is posted. Or even worse, nothing is posted and your 6 months pregnant having to change back out of your swimsuit. Annoying on a non pregnant day, makes me want to cry while pregnant.

This morning was the worst experience I ever had at a YMCA.

I waited for 30 minutes for the basketball hoops to be lowered, only to be told that the staff could not find the keys.

I asked the staff for leadership to call me. Leadership called me today and told me that I could not attain a memenrrship due to me being rude to staff.

Though I was frustrated, I was professional and didn't raise my voice nor call anyone out of their name.

I didn't plan on coming back to the YMCA, but to be told that I could not come back because I said that it was a poor experience to staff and wanted to speak to thier manager is absolutely ridiculous.

I had a ymca membership years ago. Decided to give it a try again as I had a card from my insurance company i am a truck driver. Came in on July 2nd signed up and was ready to cancel my planet fitness membership. I was told i paid the starter fee and for july to august cool. I was told this by 2 people working the front desk more than twice as i asked multiple times to clarify. Had so many issues during sign up had to call back multiple times stilk unable to sign into online account they never updated my address still showing me living downtown. Also finally after numerous called they updated my phone number and ail but still cannot log into ymca website to update information. I also did not receive any receipt for the start up and forst month fee that i paid and do not have access to see the information online even after repeatedly asking the front desk for help with it! Fast forward found out there is not a ymca within the area of my home in arizona as well so there's no reason for me to have the membership when I'll be partial down there as well as here in iowa. So I came back in and canceled my account on July 5th! Was told I'd have access until August 13th. Was not told I'd be charged again. But reminded about the cancelation policy but because the 2 people who signed me up told me i wouldn't have another charge till aigust because i paid first month and start up fee up front i understood that i wouldn't be charged again and she conformed i wouldn't be. And low and behold here we are charged again and they won't make it right. I also asked for my card information to be deleted off the account and the lady refused to do so said my account was set for cancelation i do mpt care you all took money out of my account without my authorization and lied to me more than once. I understand their cancelation policy but I literally canceled 3 days after I opened the account had been lied to of when my next payment was going to come out when I asked more than once and had so many issues this organization will never get amy of my money ever again!!!! If I wouldn't of been given false information by your employees and my account would have been started correctly where I would have gotten my information example my receipts and everything do you really think I'd have made such a big hoopla about it no I wouldn't have. And I pray you all don't do this to anyone else for me it's one thing but I can only imagine those on disability or retirement! I have also filed a complaint with the better business bureau because I did not appreciate being gas lighter professionally. I have a business degree i worked in collections. Bla.ing your coworkers and not taking ownership for misinformation and mess ups when your a manager is wrong. And trying to blame a customer is even worse.

Someone from corporate was in contact with me and refunded my membership. After explaining what happened he agreed that if someone anyone would have explained that my first payment was prorated we wouldn't have been talking. So he made the correction. But ny review of the location still stands and I still caution people

This YMCA does not represent what the YMCA stands, for. They try to achieve a profit by selling towels and amenities that are part of the membership at other locations , hours of operation are not late enough for someone who works 3 shift on weekends. The hospitality lacks compared to other YMCAs. Usually when you go to a YMCA you expect to be greeted like someone from Chick-fil-A. That’s the best way to compare it if you hold the name young man’s Christian Association, you need to uphold that promise that you’re giving to the customers And the religion. from a customer perspective, I would like to see better hospitality, better working hours, and less of a for profit mentality. this is a high populated city. You should be able to pull enough off of your capital from memberships alone. I have no ill intent for writing this review just wanted to see better from this YMCA in particular. May God bless all of the staff and customers, and keep them safe and free from injury with a joyful and kind spirit. Thank you to all who read this review. Hours are constantly changing and are not properly posted online for members to be aware of especially for random “holidays.”
Facility often has broken machines and not very clean. Wipes for cleaning are almost always out of stock. And staff rarely comes to clean them even though they have plenty of staff standing at the desk.
Staff allows and welcomes homeless individuals sleep throughout the first floor of the building.
I enjoy what the Y stands for and what they do for the community but this location has work to do.

Just visiting from out of town. Very open facility with lots of different spaces for resistance training. The cardio equipment does not have its own television service so you have to bring your own entertainment. Parking is only $1/ hour at the garage next door, but if you are a regular member it's best to get the parking package on your membership.

I moved to Iowa temporarily and I was looking for a place that wasn’t difficult to cancel with. I am a travel nurse so flexibility is huge to me. I went with this place instead of anytime fitness because originally they told me there was no cancellation fee that I would just be able to cancel before the next cycle bills and I would be fine. Recently my contract is ending and I go to end it and they told me I would be billed for the next month because it wasn’t in the 15 day mark. I explained to the front desk worker that the reason I signed up with this gym is specifically because of what I thought was a smooth transition. Even though I was ending my membership 13 days before the mark. Ridiculous. They were rude and didn’t even care to hear me out when I was cooperating with them just fine. If you are a traveler for work do not come here. Take your money else where. Even though it’s close and convenient to hospitals and downtown, the equipment is always broken, the steam room never works, and if you are sold because of the huge pools, the swim team practices all the time and they have meets every weekend so you can’t even use the pool on Saturday’s and Sunday’s. Not to mention you have to pay for parking every time.

Huge YMCA right in the heart of downtown. Parking was easy, right out front but also has a garage for $1/hr. The facility was massive. Lap pools, racket ball courts, track, 2 basketball courts and tons of equipment.

Basketball court did get heavily occupied and definitely a rougher group to play against, but steer clear of that and you’ll be fine.

Nice place, open on time and many options. Whether to workout on machines , free weights , cardio equipment , swimming or classes; they have about anything for anyone . Along with racquetball courts , basketball courts, etc.
They have regular locker room and then a fitness center ( like a vip , executive ) with towels, disposable razors, shaving cream, hair gel, hair spray, spray deodorant , powder, q-tips , aftershave , hair dryers, etc for additional costs monthly where you can keep your stuff in assigned locker and key code for entry to room with sauna and steam room , hot tub, showers , bathroom . They used to provide a service that washed your clothes daily and out back in locker which all of us fitness center members really loved and awaiting for it to return especially since staff say they’re working on it. They give a laundry bag and ya toss it in bin when done working out then clothes are back in locker next day for workout . Really great option so you don’t have to bring a gym bag every trip to exercise . Just a change of clothes for after shower .
You have to park at meters which is done through app now or can park in ramp on east side of the Ymca which is like $2 or something . All in all nice huge facility to do a plethora of things or get in/out and back to hustle and bustle of life.

My current gym! The staff here is amazing! I enjoy morning workouts and a cup of the free hot coffee after I finish. Has a nice pool, 2 indoor basketball courts and an indoor track. I have a student discount and I think the price is fair. The equipment is a bit outdated but functional and it can beca bit crowded in the afternoons.

There is plenty of space to squat and deadlift, which is important to me!

Arrived for quick nightly workout/exercise 8.38pm after working overtime on Wednesday 2/9/2022. The 2 employees just stood there staring angrily at me claiming they can't check anyone in anymore. My husband and I were members for more than 5 years and recently had to cancel our membership because we moved. We are so sad to say goodbye to this facility and it’s staff and patrons. We’re both serious lifters and appreciated the quality of the equipment and the multiple areas with power racks. There are good cardio machine options as well, and most of the cardio machines were recently upgraded. The community you’re able to build as a regular with people from all walks of life is an added bonus. Would definitely recommend for people at any fitness level looking for a gym to call home.

We are so fortunate to have this state of the art facility. My only concern is the fully clothed people I have seen enter the sauna, shoes and all. There is no posting on appropriate attire, which by the way is a towel. With flu season approaching I will avoid the sauna.

First, this gym does have a lot of amenities and I like the wide open spaces. I do not have a monthly membership but decided to do a day pass since I wanted to lift with my brother who was in town. $15 for a day pass per person! I was shocked! When a full month membership is ~$60. My next gripe is then there's another steam room/locker area that you have to pay extra to have access. I definitely won't be back.

Shelter Skelter to much construction going on plus there was a smokers convention all around. Clean up the smoking it ridiculous. Everywhere you look walk or smell its cigarette smoke .
