I had tried to cancel my membership 3 months ago, but the main manager was never in. The front desk lady took down all my information and had me sign papers….never was taking care of. Everytime I ask for one to resolve these issues they can’t seem to help, no follow ups, just continuous charge??? Why must past gym members be threatened with collections when all paper work was submitted for cancellation, yet no action was actually taken on the Genesis employee’s end?

Staff are always nice and helpful, hours of operation are reasonable, cool there are two Lawrence locations, but much of their equipment is in poor shape (see pictures). I understand that people can be rough on equipment, and I dont' expect it all to be shiny and new, but my biggest frustration is not even being able to read the weight numbers on the machines (see pics). Yes, I can do math, but it's a pain and a waste of my time, and some of the increments change from 10-15 pounds, so you also have to look at numbers at the bottom of the stack and do some subtraction and work your way up to figure out what you're lifting (if you care and want to track progress). A label maker or paint pen would solve the problem without being expensive. I e-mailed the regional manager Charles Wiggan a few weeks ago, I even had a staff member text him my info... and he's ghosted me. Apparently we little people don't matter to him. I really enjoy the pool for lap swimming (it's nice and warm!) but I'm about ready to switch gyms to Jawhawk or Crunch. If I pay a premium membership fee, they should have at least decent equipment, but they don't, which is why I'm giving Genesis two stars. If their monthly fee was only $10 like Cruch used to be (and still has nicer equipment) I'd give more stars. Many of the attachments are broken or missing, I often have to steal pins from other machines. I went on Amazon and bought my own attachements (like pull handles that aren't cracked and pinching me, and decent barbell clamps). One of their rope attachments at North (like for triceps pushdowns) is down to threads, I hope it doesn't snap and hurt someone... Luckly there are plenty of cardio machines, because they're often broken, but you can usually hop on another one that still works if it's not too busy. If you're thinking about joining, get a tour first and see if you could tolerate the condition of their equipment. South is better than North for condition equipment, but not exactly perfect either.

11/8/25 - Update
Very shortly after posting this review I did receive phone calls from both the North manager, and Chas Wiggan who I spoke with. He was very apologetic and sympathetic with my frustrations, and said these easy were easy fixes that they were working on that day to get the labels on the machines fixed. Fast forward a few weeks later... essentially nothing has changed. I added a few pictures that I just took. Yes, there are now a FEW machines where they used tape and a marker to quantify the weights on the machines (see pic below), which is really the biggest thing I wanted. Unfortuantely, after a few weeks, they only did that on a few machines. I'm glad they labeled SOME of them, yet they couldn't manage to spend another 20 minutes to label the other machines? Still frustrated I can't read numbers on many of the machines (last 4 pics from 2 days ago), so as kind as their words were after we spoke, the vast majority of those difficult to read machines are the same. It seems like a very small ask to use tape and a Sharpie to label the rest of the machines in the club... but after several weeks of being told they'd do it, more of the same.

I toured Jawhawk club this week, VERY VERY nice equipment. Price is higher and hours are shorter, but if you want a pristine facility that is super clean and all their equipmement is top notch and looks brand new, check them out. Thinking about making the change and joining my neighbor Jen who quit Genesis and went to Jawhawk and couldn't be happier with her change.

I am always look for the nearest gym with a basketball court during my travels. I called before arriving and the staff at Genesis was extremely accommodating for needs during my short stay in Lawrence. I played some amazing games with great people and had a nice workout afterwards. Great environment and great staff!

Was interested in getting a gym membership and have heard multiple different pitches from my friends on which to join, but I have to say I just took a tour of this place and it really has everything. One of the things I’m most excited about is the free yoga classes that come with the membership along with other classes. This membership truly has the best value for the price. I have been a member for over 8 years at this specific club. The new Club Manager Tyler has proven to be highly effective! He's making it happen at North Lawrence! For years the pool has remained dirty and unclean to the point that I couldn't stay in the water. I realize the pool is used constantly. I showed him the disgusting hair ball that was lying at the bottom of the pool. He promised to get the robotic water cleaner going regularly to change this. Since that day, it looks great!
I also noticed the equipment area being cleaned thoroughly. This is something I've never witnessed. And, equipment is finally being repaired! I have greater confidence in using this facility now. Thank you to Tyler and his team. And, thank you for changing the management here. The prior Manager was all talk and no action to say the least.

i used to come to here a lot about five years ago, and just came back recently. previous reviewers have discussed the recent changes for the worse, and i wholeheartedly agree. there were cockroaches in both the locker room and pool area, mold in the showers and dirt everywhere, and paint chips and grime in the pool itself. i only swam a couple of laps before not being able to stomach it anymore, and i have skin peeling off of my hand. fresh towels were dirty. only upside was that the staff was friendly and helpful, which is the only reason i am leaving this review instead of rescinding my membership in person.

I’ve been a member at Genesis for years and watched it slowly decline to a run-down turd. When you bring up a problem it seldom gets taken care of right away. Usually weeks before anyone actually does anything. Especially the cleanliness. The place is just all around grimy. If the dust buildup on equipment isn’t gross enough, for months I’ve asked them at the front desk to PLEASE clean the mold and mildew off the shower walls. It’s still there and doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon either. So… What am I actually spending money on? Also, I used to use the hot tub all the time but whoever is balancing the chemicals does a horrible job. I ended up with topical dermatitis so bad my doctor put me on steroids and told me to stop getting in the hot tub at Genesis. I had it everywhere but my face. Which is the only part of my body I didn’t submerge in the water. I’m a big fan of hot tubs too. And this is the only one I’ve ever had problems with. My skin was literally burning off in big patches. When I brought it up with management it’s crickets. Maybe if I complain enough they’ll either give me a free membership for life or they’ll terminate my membership because I wrote a really bad review. In any case they’re still taking my money each month and don’t really have a good structured method of cancelling your membership without being threatened financially by a contract that has so many holes in it you’re better off just ordering a stop-payment from your bank. Eventually the district manager will call and tell you that they’re having trouble getting your payment. That’s when you’ll explain to them that you put a stop payment on your bank account because they continually give you the run-around when it comes to cancelling your membership. Hope this helps you make an informed decision about your health club membership.

This gym is okay . It’s one of the better ones in the area. Though I can tell they don’t clean that much in the bathrooms . The saunas are not that hot either.

The true culprit is - if you decide to freeze your membership and go away they will continue to charge you the full price while you’re away. I tried to call several times and they still refuse to give me a full explanation to what has been charged to my account nor adjust the charges .

The promotions will always say no annual fee etc etc and yet I got charged annual fee because “it’s in the agreement that you signed” when I signed up during one of these promotional periods.

I never get any receipts for the monthly charges . I don’t have an issue paying however I appreciate clarity around what I’m being charged for .

At this point i give up trying to get some sort of a refund or rectification. Every phone call I only get “someone from membership services will call you back” I never once got any call backs or any emails from the membership services . Everytime I call them it’s like a whole new case all over again nobody knows about it. And I get told yet the same thing again “someone from membership services will call you back” It’s frustrating.

It’s the only gym close by so for now I will stick with them
However watch your charges / accounts if ever need to freeze your membership . They will continue to charge you the regular amounts .

Update January 2025: the mens steam room has been broken for a month or more. The dry sauna is very patchy... it currently seems to be broken as well.

This is basically the theme of this location. Stuff breaks frequently and it takes awhile for it to be fixed.

The weight machines are old. It's not like it makes much of a difference, as long as a machine is working it works as well as the newer ones you'll find at a Planet Fitness or Crunch or some place else. But like the steam room and sauna, once it breaks it could be awhile for it to be fixed.

If you (even infrequently) want to swim or attend classes like yoga, then genesis is a pretty decent deal.

If you are just looking for cardio and weights, then you are almost certainly better off with PF or Crunch (places that also have more expansive hours).

If, like me, the main attraction you are looking for is a steam room, then you should prepare for disappointment.

I asked for a manager to call me and help me understand a timeline for them to be fixed 2 weeks ago and no one bothered. When you are paying a premium price for a gym, you assume they will take good care of the facilities and amenities but in this case, sadly, that’s not true.

Update - Chaz, the GM called me after posting this review and followed up on of the broken things and timelines for them to be fixed. He made steps to make things right on my end and said he hopes that 2025 looks very different in terms of the sauna, steam room and hot tub being operational.

Gym at service level is nice. However, much of the equipment and machines are damaged or do not work. The incline and speed feature doesn't work on quite a few of the treadmills. I was also forced to pay an "annual fee" for my membership when I had been a member for less than 6 months. Not worth the price.

This business cares more about money than people. Built into its foundation is a clever contractual stipulation that makes each customer liable for automatic payments beyond three months of contracted Personal Training, even after Personal Trainer Manager explains that you do not need to do anything but pay the three months of PT, and then you will be done with the payments. It’s sneaky and unethical. Genesis Health Clubs LLC cares not for their clientele. Money is their prime objective, not health. Work out at home. Even Mr. T said, “You don’t need no gym! Genesis is a step above other local gyms. They have a huge selection of machines, a basketball court, a racketball court, a pool with 6 lanes and is heated to 82-84 degrees. They have a variety of classes offered for free to members. The locker rooms have a steam room, shower, free towels, shampoo/conditioner/body wash/shaving cream/hair spray. And the lockers have their own built in lock mechanisms, so you dont need to bring a lock from home and potentially worry about carrying around a key. Staff has been great and on sign up they gave us 4 free lessons with a personal trainer.

Top notch, the membership costs have different promotions and is dependent on how many people are under the plan. Id recommend going in and at least giving it a go, their online website offered a free 7day membership trial.

(Edited) The facilities are great. The north location has a pool and sauna but otherwise has the same facilities as the South location including a protein shake and beer bar. I had an awful interaction at the north location but the south location management is much more friendly and professional. If you do have any issues signing up for a membership do not sign anything and reach out to Chaz (the regional manager), he is available via email or phone and will get back to you typically within 24 hours.

Updated Review:
The good: The saltwater pool and yoga class are still fabulous. I enjoy the free weight areas, lifting machines, and ellipticals. There are always lots of machines. Genesis seems to be good about repairing parts on machines that break or get more worn. There is typically plenty of space to workout and a good atmosphere.

The bad: Unfortunately, issues came up with bigger repairs that took a very long time with no communication.
Last Summer (2023) there was some heating or cooling issues in their upstairs area. When I repeatedly suffered from getting too hot and nauseous while using the elliptical, to the point I had to leave or change workout options, I would report it to the front desk. Each time I was told it was being worked on, but months went by without resolution. Repeatedly I reported the issue to the front desk. Then outside temperatures dropped and it was hard to know if the problem was fixed since it did not heat up as badly.
Over the Winter (2023-2024) they struggled with broken showers and sauna closure (seemed to line up with significant freeze we all dealt with so no blame there). The hot tub also was closed at a different time, with no notice of when to expect it to be available again. What was upsetting was the lack of information. If I asked at the front desk, they would say, “it should be fixed soon” or “not more than another day or two” and soon lots of time passed (months for the hot tub, weeks for showers and sauna). I left a letter for management at the front desk with no response. After two weeks, I mailed the same letter and got no response. Suddenly the hot tub is fixed, showers repaired, and sauna opened. Which is wonderful, but it was a long time without certain desired gym features and no information.
Additionally, in the past two months, TVs sat on the locker room floor or were left off or removed from wall, for anyone who utilizes those. A few large mirrors broke and were removed for safety, which is wonderful, but months later they have not been replaced. I use the shower weekly and have noted large hairballs and bits of trash from showers or swimsuits left for weeks in a row. It is easy to tell they are not cleaned well enough when a swimsuit liner lays in shower stall for 3+ weeks. Carpeted areas could use a deeper clean/edging. When you are down on the ground doing stretches, it is easy to see how dirty some areas are.
In my letter I was requesting clear signs posted if something is being repaired with information or an email sent to members. I appreciate how much they advertise new classes and competitions. I wish the same was done for out of service equipment or features.
Will I keep going? Yes. It is a big gym with lots of areas, extra activities and classes, and I enjoy the instructors. But I am sharing to get the attention of management that my letter could not accomplish and to share all aspects of my experience since my last review six years ago.

I have joined two other gyms in Lawrence in the past few years and always had problems with crowdedness or pricing or equipment. Then I found genesis (north). I love this gym. Friendly staff, lots of equipment and generally not overly busy (I use it afternoons on weekends and after 7 during week). They have great later hours. I am so glad they offer childcare for the times we have needed it. I love using a saltwater pool and the free personal training sessions were a great jumpstart on fitness for me. I especially love yoga there.

I used to visit this place as a guest when my parents were members. They dropped their membership, so I asked for the cost of a one week pass. $60 for a one week pass for a visitor? For mostly older equipment in a run down facility? No thanks.

Current member. I think it’s a little ridiculous that I pay $90/month for membership for my wife and I, then when I come in to workout, some of the attachments for the machines are broken, there’s no hot water (fine, not the end of the world). I go into the steam room, when I’m done I go to take a cold shower. Turns out there are just no showers working at all. Would have been nice to know before I soaked in my own sweat for half an hour. To top it off, I’m pretty sure the same crumpled up paper towel has been in the steam room for around two weeks now. Guessing that’s an indicator of how often it gets cleaned.. will definitely be looking around for something with working amenities at a better price, I doubt it will be hard to find somewhere that fits the bill.

Have been a member for the better part of a year here at genesis health. Awesome basketball court. Solid workout equipment. All the weights and Machines a newbie can need. Sauna is good too. As well as a full Olympic swimming pool and Tracy makes the best protein shakes❤️

I love the new management at the north Lawrence club. Even the decorations for Halloween were above and beyond.
There is a very positive vibe when I walk inside. The staff is amazing very good energy.
The equipment is a little dated. Other than that, It's a great place to workout and have a delicious protein shake

So I recently ended my membership because a male employee entered the woman’s locker room. Unfortunately that isn’t the first time this has happened at this location. This was the last straw of many other issues….broken equipment/hot tub/air conditioning and to a lesser extent closing early (6pm) on weekends. I very much enjoyed the pool but I care more about my security.

Genesis needs to also have other ways to cancel memberships other than having to explain at the front desk and writing it out on their paperwork…”I’m leaving because a male employee entered a woman’s locker room without any announcement” I felt very exposed/embarrassed and I had to say a few different times to management that I wanted to no longer go to this gym meaning I wanted to cancel.

I’m shocked but not surprised this is still happening in 2023.

PROS- The staff are pretty friendly and the locker rooms are clean. You also don't have to wait to use any of the machines.
CONS- First, the prices have jumped drastically over the years. It's not well cleaned on the machines. Having gross junk in the drink cups and phone holders. If you go in the morning, their maintenance staff keeps taking all of the cleaner bottles, so you can't even wipe down the machines. Part of the reason I joined this gym was to not be out in the heat since May Their AC has been broken. And they keep telling me when asked that it will be fixed. Should not be cooler outside than in the gym. Their towels smell strongly of cleaners and they have a smoothie bar which I witnessed one of their staff filling their individual bags with her bare hands and repetitively checking her phone and going back to handling food prep. While this gym has been updated, they fail to update the racquetball room or the room. They hold their Yoga classes in which pictures are provided. Where the floor is warping completely uncomfortable. When you're having to do stuff lying on the floor. I have witnessed staff letting their children upstairs to play on the machines. I really liked the concept of the pool. I was told Sunday was Family Day. But every time I go, that's not in the morning. There is always kids playing in the pool. Half of the machines TV's don't even work or can be programmed, and many don't work at all for months at a time with no repairs. Lastly, for the past 3 weeks, I have been trying to get ahold of the manager who always seems to be gone to cancel my membership. This seems to be a ploy tactic. So I passed my 30 days cancelation period considered this my written notice.

They claim that anyone new to the club can get a 3-days pass to see the facilities. When I asked for it, they refused to do so and said I would have to pay for the monthly subscription first. When I mentioned the information on the website, the guy told me "Ok, I am gonna "let" you workout for today", which was so insulting. Even tried to contact a headquarter about it, and surprisingly there is none. Seems like a scam to me.

Locker rooms are the size of a handicapped restroom, with a single shower. Pool is in a covered outdoor pool with tiny whirlpool next to it. The whirlpool was in poor condition; only 3 jets function, the rest are visible broken or otherwise disabled. I brought a co-worker with me to hit the showers & soak after a long day so he could decide if he wanted to join; was told we needed to pay $20 for a day pass so he could join me for a soak & swim.
Overall, rather disappointed in the condition/state of the facilities as I'm using Genesis health spas all over Kansas & Missouri every week.
If it's a choice of Lawrence North or no gym that day, I'll go without. That place used to be a really nice facility a decade ago; I've never seen a Genesis in worse shape.

In 2021, I relocated from Lawrence and promptly canceled my membership. However, despite my cancellation, they have persistently charged my credit card even into 2023, claiming that I failed to cancel my membership correctly. They accused me of sending the cancellation to the wrong destination, pointing out spelling errors as evidence. Furthermore, they boldly asserted that "we never delete emails," as if any of us could verify such a claim.

I urge you to exercise caution when dealing with Miranda and Chas. While the monetary aspect is of little importance to me, what truly matters is the principle at stake and the complete disregard for customer service.

Horrible experience overall. Management has ZERO integrity. Child care is a joke.
We cancelled our membership 2 months ago, but management failed to ACTUALLY CANCEL our membership.
I went into the facility and talked with Miranda (the manager on duty) to cancel out membership. She said she would relay that to the GM (Chaz). Chaz never followed through with cancelling the membership. Unacceptable. If I could give negative stars, I would.

***Chaz (the manager) still has not returned my calls. He acknowledged they overcharged us (which is another issue entirely- our family is suffering enough financial hardship), told me he would talk to corporate (who knows if he did). Bottom line, this situation is becoming out of hand and another course of action will be taken to correct Chaz’ mistakes.

This gym is a scam. Stay away. I signed my now adult son up for a membership 2 years ago. Following signing him up I received multiple emails and phone calls from Chas, the manager, attempting to get me to sign up as well. I've been trying to cancel my son's membership now for well over a year. You can only cancel in person with Chas. You can't cancel with anyone else in the building or over the phone. He is now a ghost that cannot be tracked down and doesn't respond to emails. It's not easy for me to get to the gym to cancel between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm and every time I've made the effort he's out. I've emailed corporate and still nothing. Each month they bill my card. Terrible experience...

This location is the best Gensis I’ve been too out of all the ones I have visited. The building is very well up kept, enough equipment for everyone even at peak hours, great gym culture and gym staff. Miranda is the personnel I run into the most and she always welcomes you with a big smile and hello. Pete took care of my sign up process and showed me around the facility and it was a smooth and easy process.

Edit: Feb 24th after my vehicle was broken into and finding out from LPD it happens a lot. CCTV is not adequate for ID of thieves.
Beware: Not a very helpful forthcoming manager when your vehicle gets vandalized on Genesis property. Both managers sitting in office making LPD wait for information about cctv on property. If your vehicle has been vandalized on Genesis property contact me together change can happen.
There are two Genesis in town and very stark differences. I have frequent both since signing up four months ago. North is not very clean and uses laundry softener when washing towels. South is cleaner and doesn’t use the laundry product overkill. The reason I mention this towel difference is because all the softener keeps the towel from absorbing the water on your skin. And, if you are trying to save money on operating costs this practice could be a place to start. South gym doesn’t use this laundry product and towels look and feel cleaner. While using treadmill at south location I have notice the employees coming upstairs and replacing wipe machine down towels, north doesn’t practice this nor do they keep spray bottles filled or seems to lack functioning properly. I have also notice south employees cleaning more than north. Last week at north location I informed employee the hot tub was really dirty. I then frequent south location hoping north would take the time and clean hot tub. Yesterday I went to north location and the hot tub was inundated with so much chemical the water was white and it made your nose burn. I was told by an employee they don’t know something is wrong unless clients tell them. Well … even if you are having trouble keeping a maintenance employee management can clean the hot tub themselves. It’s not rocket science I’ve owned one before. Finally, I would have gone and reported just how bad hot tub was AGAIN yesterday but, I already know you know. Why? I had a lengthy conversation with another longtime client about how bad north is being neglected for up keep. She also chooses south location as her preference. I sincerely hope this very informative review is taken seriously and somethings change at north location and not just an older client complaining.

Chaz and staff at Genesis North were so helpful to me after I had a major hip and arm injury. Chaz helped me navigate and get to the locker room and pool area. I was able to use a special chair that went into the pool and out to swim.The only problem was with the showers in the summer of 2022, when they closed for too long because of repairs.

I signed up pretty recently in the middle of October, I messed up by declining the tour as I didn't have time. was shocked to see the state of the sauna (benched collapsed with rotted wood and rust exposed) and no working showers anywhere for men, also no signs saying out of order so someone could wander in an active work zone with tools left out, pool was nice though and I like the hot tub , wish they had working showers so members could clean up before heading to work.

The kid who works weekday nights regularly has disregarded me every time I complain about anything related to me personally feeling comfortable at the gym. I go to the gym to unwind after work, relax and decompress.. Being told “I wish there was something I could do about that” and “that’s just men being men” is not the appropriate response. Women should have a comfortable and accommodating gym. Unfortunately, I may be looking into an all female gym or a gym with a bit less sensory overloading members.
10/18/22 7:30pm, there were children in the pool during NON-family hours. I swim regularly as it is less sensory overloading. I don’t have an issue with children, but the parents were in the hot tub yelling at their kids from across the pool. I was being as patient as one can be on the autism spectrum… But I had to leave after 5 minutes. When i complained to the guy working (who is always rude) he disregarded me for the 3rd time since having this membership. I’ve been a member for years. My money, time & comfortability should be taken into account each time.

Terrible experience here with the manager Chas. Wasn’t using the club much, cancelled our membership and Genesis continued charging our account for months after. Long story short called to have these charges refunded and was dodged and ignored for weeks, then showed up and was blatantly lied to about refund being processed when it was never even submitted. Eventually had to contact corporate and resolve this simple issue through their office. The manager here is highly incompetent, clearly does not care and will lie to you face. Can’t imagine if he has to deal with an actual complex issue. Beware.
