Karate school Martial arts school Self defense schoolAbout the Club
Japanese Karate Academy is a traditional Japanese Martial arts and self-defense dojo established by John Hileman, a Firefighter and Paramedic in the Johnson County area.
We train in one of the core styles of Japanese karate as well as Aikido. Our primary focus is reality based self defense/hand-to-hand combat that has been tested and proven in true combat situations.
My goal is to instill the spirit and honor of traditional budo and encourage every student to not only exceed their expectations, but mine as well. Our style is based on the techniques and training of Shindo-Jinen Ryu, Shotokan, Jujitsu, and Aikido, but with self-defense adapted to the unfortunate reality of today's society.

My son has been learning from Sensei Hileman for a few months now and we couldn't be happier. He's learned some Japanese, he's more confident and is learning respect from sensei. Additionally, I am enrolled in the Adult Self Defense class on Thursday nights. It's a fantastic workout while learning real, practical self defense.

The owner and sensei is fantastic. Very patient with children, and has found a way to teach and make it fun. Couldn't recommend this karate academy enough.

My 5 year old sons loves coming here. The instructor is very patient with him which is important to me. I would definitely recommend this karate school to anyone, young and old.

Sensei is very dedicated to martial arts and passing this on to his participants. He teaches his young students discipline and respect, while still having fun. The schedule flexes each month which works well for my child's changing schedule.

Back in December, we were looking for an activity my oldest son (Sammy, 4 yrs.) and I could do together, so naturally, I went straight to something that was huge part of my childhood, karate. Sadly, my old dojo had to close, so I had to search for a new one. It was essential to me to find a place that emphasized hard work, good technique, and practical application - as I was taught by my old instructor - over flashy kicks and how fast you can get a black belt.
The answer, for us, was Japanese Karate Academy (JKA). Sammy and I have been really enjoying our training here. Sensei John is a great teacher for all ages and he does an excellent job of balancing traditional karate techniques with the real world applications. Whether you've had prior training, like me, or are looking to start your martial arts journey you won't be disappointed with JKA.

Sensei John has a great body of knowledge, and its very obvious of his passion for teaching Karate and self-defense. Iām in my late 40ās and am just getting started in my Karate training and education. Regardless of age, there are skills to be learned here.
