Chris is a down-to-earth trainer who knows his stuff. I hadn’t worked out in years, and I was kind of nervous to get back into it. But Chris never makes me feel bad if I can’t do something – he just offers alternatives. Since starting with him, I’ve gotten stronger and have much better endurance. I’ve been working with Chris for two months now and it has been an amazing experience! He make me feel comfortable and has all the knowledge and experience you would want as a personal trainer! I came with zero experience and also an injury to my leg and he has made adjustments to my workouts that still show improvement but not make the injury worst. I was coming off a long period of being relatively inactive & an elbow injury. I've been working with Chris since Jan 2022 to help supplement my distance running training. Chris is always well-prepared for our sessions, brings a lot of variety to the workouts, and has been skilled in the way he gradually increases the intensity over time (I'm sore but not broken after the workouts ;).
If you're finding yourself needing an extra push to get started on your exercise / weight training goals, I'd recommend given Chris a call.

I recently had weight loss surgery and wanted to start a workout routine with accountability.
I met with Chris in February told him my situation and what my goals are. He went above and beyond to read a little bit about the surgery and he created a workout that would ease me into a new life style. Over three last 3 month he has built me up in strength and confidence and i have lost over 20lbs we even have discussed meals and healthy food options. My confidence in movements and lifting and exercising properly had introduced me to a new world for being stagnant so long so thank you Chris for being patient and keeping me moving as i was healing ! I recommend anyone who has had weight loss surgery to come try him out ! Even if you haven't a great trainer for sure!

I just started training with Chris and the experience has been very positive. Chris is absolutely fantastic. Everyday I meet with him he pushes me to new levels that I had no idea I could reach. He challenges me every session, but still maintains a good balance between lower and upper body. Not to mention, he explains to me the purpose and the goal of the exercises we do, what they work, what to focus on, etc. that way it doesn’t feel like I am aimlessly pushing weight.
Chris is also a great guy in general. He loves to talk about what’s going on with you and actually remembers those things about you. He also will work with you to create a dietary plan that is best fit to reach your goals. He has changed my eating habits for the best, encourages me to drink more water, and has helped me gain muscle since I started working with him.
I totally recommend Chris Medlen Fitness and Health to anyone that wants to be pushed and challenged, but also wants to see results. Thanks Chris for everything.

I have been working out with Chris for about 3 or 4 months. Personal training is what I need to stay on track. Chris is a great personal trainer to have as he is very positive and works to create a training program specifically tailored to you. Usually, I'm skeptical of folks who have all five-star reviews. In this case, Chris deserves it. I started working with him eight years ago when I was 260lbs, without an ounce of muscle on my body. Working closely and being encouraged and trained by Chris, I dropped 80 pounds, but this was only the beginning of our fitness journey.
Chris seamlessly increased the intensity and variety of my training over the course of months until I was running stairs, sprinting hills, box jumping and increasing in strength. Not once during that time did I ever think he'd planned something beyond what was safe and what I was ready for.
I did some group training with him over the years and took some time to focus on running. Two and half years ago, I returned to Chris's training and it has been amazing.
Very shortly after I started back, I had to have ACL surgery. Chris did not miss a beat, he deftly modified my training regimen to be safe but continually challenging. I brought my physical therapist's and doctors recommendations to Chris and he carefully adapted them my training sessions. I can honestly say, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that as a result of my training during that time, I was back and running on the trails and doing martial arts with my son far sooner than I would have otherwise.
Four months ago, for completely unrelated reasons, I suffered a bulging cervical disc. For a time, I was in pain and couldn't train or do much of anything. More frighteningly, after the pain subsided, I discovered that I had been robbed of significant strength in the right upper body. Chris said something amazing to me after it was safe to come back. "We'll get past this," he said.

Chris is absolutely wonderful. He is no-nonsense, and as nice as they come. He really knows his stuff! My 10-year-old son and I work out together with Chris. Chris tailors every workout to accommodate our different strengths and abilities. He is EXTREMELY patient but doesn't let us slack off. He is very adept at explaining and ensuring proper form, and great at working with kids. He is passionate about making sure we know how to do each exercise correctly so that there are no injuries, and he uniquely motivates my son by constantly encouraging him with words about his potential. He provides positive reinforcement when my son does something well, and gently correct him without embarrassment (it's easy for a 10 year old to feel embarrassed!). Chris' workouts are varied, and every exercise set includes different types of movements and weights to ensure an all-over workout. I am always exactly the perfect amount of sore afterwards. Sore enough to tell that I had a good workout and did something meaningful, but not so sore that I despair of life! ;-) I am in my mid-40s and have never been stronger. Health and fitness are so important to him and he has a gentle way of weaving into everyday conversations positive encouragement for making healthy lifestyle choices. He has a compassionate and natural way of sharing his passion that has gently "brainwashed" me over time. He shares recipes and loves to distract you from the difficulty of a hard workout by chatting about his (or your) family or recent movies he's seen. His workout area is meticulously clean. In every way, Chris is a fabulous motivator, excellent trainer, and an all-around good guy! I give him my highest and most enthusiastic recommendation!

Chris offers all the equipment and guidance of a gym with a personal focus in a comfortable setting. If you show up prepared to work, Chris will motivate you to become the best version of yourself. He helps you track your success by measuring your body-fat percentage and weight. In two and a half months I lost about 20 pounds and 5.5 percent of my body fat, and I'm noticing muscle definition I haven't enjoyed since I was a teenager. Chris has worked with me on strengthening weak areas to improve a back injury. Since we began, I went from experiencing near-constant pain and stiffness to feeling relatively pain-free and flexible. I've trained with Chris Medlen for almost one year and he helped me progress from a sedentary lifestyle to being the fittest I have ever been. I used to see Chris training at the gym I used to go to, and couldn't believe the things he was having people do! One day I decided to give personal training a try and I knew I wanted to work with Chris because I wanted to be challenged. When he met me for a consultation he asked what I wanted out of my workouts - a good sweat - or to "kill it" and I said I wanted to kill it. I regretted that choice at first but I started seeing results so fast and eventually I was doing the things I saw those other people doing. It gave me a huge boost of confidence! So I started trying things I was always afraid to try...like running and obstacle courses. When I moved away from Lawrence I tried working with a few other trainers and just wasn't getting results. I also suffered an injury through sports and now that I'm back in Lawrence I knew Chris was the only one I wanted to help me get back in shape. It's frustrating starting over and not being able to do the things I used to, but after only a few weeks things are starting to get easier. I know soon I'll be back to "killing it" and feeling strong and confident again!

I found Chris’s personal training info on Google, I liked what I read so I emailed him and he promptly responded. I liked that the first couple workouts were to establish a base line and Chris wanted to see where my fitness level was to start. Within a short amount of time I noticed I was starting to lose some weight and getting better at the exercises. I like the workouts we do and we use a variety of equipment I have not used before, which makes it fun and different. Overall, Chris is a great motivator and I am having a great experience training with him. I would recommend anyone that likes the smaller gyms to try Medlen’s Health and Fitness Training.

I can't recommend Chris enough. The guy knows exactly what he's doing. He has a great set up at his house, equipment for targeting every muscle group, and it's as private as it gets for those of you who are looking for the 1 on 1 route. Chris is an amazing trainer! I've only been going for about a month so far but I can already see results. I feel better and am able to push myself more in the workouts. He comes up with different customized exercises every time and they're always challenging and fun! Chris rocks! Like a lot of guys, I thought I knew how to work out at the gym. But frankly, after decades of trying, I didn't have that much to show for it. Lots of hours, little progress. I've been training with Chris for three years. The takeaway: there's no way I could have done this on my own. I get very effective, efficient workouts focused on functional fitness, in particular core strength. Sure, other people notice (harder abs, bigger guns), but the real benefit is you will feel better, more capable whether its moving a couch or participating in your favorite sport.

I used to work out on my own but my progress was stagnating. After I started training with Chris (in Jan 2012) I started getting noticeably stronger, my body started looking more toned and my cardiovascular fitness improved. I feel healthier and younger. The workouts are always different and fun and Chris finds a way to be supportive and friendly but still make sure we work hard. I tried a personal trainer once before who did not seem to know much more than I did about fitness and was generally distracted by other things in the gym. Thank goodness trainers get better than that. Chris is knowledgeable, experienced, and attentive. The service Medlen provides is worth every penny. You just have to try it to see what I mean.
