This is a great facility and a great asset for the community. Unfortunately the city council has decided to start charging residents for its use. Our tax dollars helped to fund this facility and to have it built. Itβs a shame that the city council cannot manage the budget effectively and decided to make us pay for the use of the facility to offset other budget shortfalls. When they decided to build this in 2013 they promised it would be free to city residents. Shame on them.

Came here for a huge volleyball tournament. I have been to many other facilities like this for big volleyball tournaments and this place is the loudest as far as facilities go. You can't hear yourself think at all. I'm used to the sounds of whistles and balls and shouting, but this was beyond anything I've experienced. So so loud and overwhelming.
On top of that, it was SO warm inside. Usually facilities run super cold. This place was uncomfortably warm for spectators and players.
The Internet service was terrible and then the WiFi was awful too. This made it almost impossible to keep up with pools and brackets.
By the third day of the tournament, the inside of the building really smelled like bad body odor from all the athletes and the warm temps inside.
Overall a very unpleasant place to attend a volleyball tournament. I loved visiting Lawrence, but not this facility.

This facility is great. The indoor track is nice of a rain or cold day and the outdoor dirt and paved paths are wonderful year round. The cardio equipment is nicely placed so you can watch people play basketball and volleyball while you work out. The outdoor paths are wide and nicely kept and are definitely fun to explore with dog(s). In the morning I often see deer on the paths or in the woods and sometimes deer parts in the trees. I have heard that people see snakes, but I have not seen any yet. However, someone or something (Sasquatch) built a shelter.

I love this place! Itβs a comfort gym honestly. The cardio area is great! Only reason I donβt give full stars is because I think they need to expand more on some gym equipment, update it add more for legs and arms, there tons of more equipment now and be nice to see that.

This place has KU athletes with tennis, track, softball. Then there is a public building that has a small indoor track and weights. There is at least 12 basketball courts indoor. Outside is several open to public tennis courts. I go to walk the trails which are behind the building along with the bicycle path.

Pretty cool place. Where are there 2-3 times a week for kids stuff. I agree the plastic cards pass is always an obstacle. I tried to request a second one for my other vehicle and they said they couldnβt do that. I was willing to pay but guess thatβs not an option. Not sure. The older lady with the white hair deserves to lose her job. I lost the super tiny card you need to get in. I don't understand how you expect people to keep that tiny piece of plastic anyways. I asked if I could replace it. She ignorantly told me now and that it's $5 for a day pass. $5 every single day for a place that use to be free? Don't even give us an option to replace the pass card. Been playing there for years for FREE. Now you guys are too entitled and don't care what people have to say or try to work something out. There's PLENTY of outside courts. Don't have to pay $5 every single day to go play ball. Sincerely hope you guys lose buisiness.

We found parking for a 19 team volleyball tournament. There was food available. ( best to bring your own. Hot food was expensive and not so good). My family and I use the Rock Chalk Park trails! It is a nice path. The paved areas are quite wide, easily standing three people side by side as you walk.
Large parking lot as well.
Walking from the sports complex down to the trails, it is mostly loose gravel, with areas that are quite steep. During the colder snowy/icy months, I could see it being a problem. When it's been extremely rainy, some parts of the path can have flooding or standing water.
The wooded areas around the trails are beautiful, truly a serene type of environment. Often running into wildlife! Deer are plentiful when the trails are relatively quiet. Especially in the mornings. Birds galore. Have also run into a few snakes.
There are a few benches along the way to sit, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds.

The weight room is stocked but cramped, and has two squat racks + barbell with moveable benches for bench press, one multi cable machine, lat pull-downs, pull up bars, leg press, leg extension, back extension bench, bicep curl bench, free dumbbells. The cardio area has recumbent bikes, Spinning-style bikes, ellipticals, a stair climber, and recumbent stair climbers. There is also two large basketball courts, and a walking track. Nearby there is a tennis facility with different hours.
Everything is wonderful here - from the weight room and cardio machines to large basketball courts - except for the situation with bathrooms/changing rooms. There are only three changing rooms on the gym side, and they double as shower and bathrooms, with no stalls- meaning that toileting and showering happens in the same single room, and there are only three toilets/showers for the gym side of the facility. Taking a shower in one of those rooms would be unimaginably disgusting, because by the end of the day they smell like toilet.
If I want to use the bathroom Iβd go to the other side if I were you, but I would not take a shower here. Itβs sad, I guess, because although I know not everyone wants to shower at the gym, some people do. The situation here just makes that impossible.
Overall I have to give 4 stars because if they added more showers or just paid the cleaner more to clean every hour, that would be wonderful.

I have always had such a nice experience at Rock chalk with no problems until today. I was refused service because I did not have my card on me. I understand not letting me in until I show proof of residency but they wouldnt even let me do that. I have forgotten my way pass many times in the past and always gained entry after showing proof.
I was told I needed to pay a 5 dollar day pass fee If I wanted to enter? Seriously??? This is a community center and we all pay to keep this thing going. Everyone in Douglas county does.
MAYBE THEY NEED TO BE REMINDED OF THAT AGAIN.
Shame on them for extorting their own residences. This is a place supposed to bring the community together not profit off them.

Played many times here for volleyball tournaments. Facilities are standard, with an adequate amount of seating for spectators, though not much for in between matches. I can only speak for Verizon service , but getting any reliable service is tough and the wi-fi isnβt much bitter but thatβs to be expected with that many people. There is one location for food and itβs always very congested with people. It has a good selection of grab and go and some hot food. I didnβt eat there so canβt comment on the quality of the prepared food.

not a bad facility, the food bar is quite expensive though, so if you will be there for a weekend long tournament, make sure you keep bring a cooler and food. They had a "no outside food or drinks" sign outside, I had no trouble bringing an entire cooler in, so you may need to be prepared to just make trips to the car for food.

At first I had high hopes for Rock Chalk. I put my kids in sports and my daughter in Gymnastics. Just recently I was told that my daughter had her first miss payment. I had automatic payments and I was unaware the payment was declined. Instead of calling me. They made my daughter sit out 1.45minutes and punished the child. 3 years no late payment. When I confronted the director, he ignored me. Then so I contacted hirer up. She was not sorry. She told me kids start to get kicked from the classes after the 10th. It was the 8th. I told her. 2 days later she band my kids from activities making false statements to band me. No certificate are given for completion of a course of Gymnastics. I had to make my own and ask the directors to sign it. Smh. Sad. My son played soccer for 5 grade and 4th. 4th grade he got a trophy π. But 5th grade doesn't get trophies. My son one the season. And championship game. Still nothing. They over crowd classes. They told me I disrupted gymnastics. Yet they have 3 gymnastics classes at the same time and a ninja all in one area. 20 plus kids. Being greedy. But me asking a question βοΈ Is Disrupted. Go else where if u want a good time. Another issue is they never have enough coaches volunteer. They make teams, take your payment and then u have to wait for a coach. May miss practices and games in the meantime. They will ask u what kind of team u want coed or boys or girls. But then give u whatever team they want

Being on the very far side of town does not make this an accessible community rec center. Why so many basketball and volleyball courts and zero racquetball/wallyball courts? Parking extends away from the main building, so when it's busy, it's a long [cold] walk to get inside.

Nice clean hotel and the perfect location where our college student lives. Bar at night was inviting and breakfast in the morning was better than water-down eggs. The coffee is great! BUT - no cleaning service? We stayed for 2 nights and there was no refresh to our room. If we had to request it at check-in no from the front desk informed us. We left for the game on Sat. morning and left a tip for the housekeeper thanking her for the room refresh service, but when we got back to our room that night the money was still there and the room was not re-refreshed. The trash can was full & we needed Kleenex. I had hung up our towels so thankful they were dry. Before we had come up to our room I had asked the young lady at the front desk a question about availability later on in the year and it seemed like we had bothered her - so for me to call down to ask for a box of Kleenex, I decided to just let it go! Ever since COVID if you don't ask for a room re-refresh they don't provide, but they still charge a premium for the room! This is a nice hotel - very west of the campus, but better than some of the motels that are so run down close to campus. The small drive might be worth it. Just remember to ask for a room re-refresh if you are staying for more than 2 nights.
