Edit:
From a recent conversation with the head setter I have hope for the gym and community to become better in the coming year. I was also probably too hard on the setting. Most problems are at least decent these days.

I enjoy climbing, so it is hard to give a negative review to my home gym where I learned to boulder. However, it is true that the climbing gym is dirty, frequently without HVAC, and full of animosity between staff and community. Additionally, the setting has been slipping more and more over the past year which may be correlated to the absolute lack of volumes set for nearly a year straight, to which I will give them credit for slowly bringing back. They are getting new holds frequently now, yet a large portion of their setting is awkward, without flow, or downright painful. Also, I was sworn at twice by an employee who I have since accepted an apology from.

Suspended for leaving review.

(2025 update): It’s getting bad. Most positive reviews are from day-passers. The strong climbers are building their own home walls to avoid NuLu, more frequently do my friends day trip to other gyms instead of seshing here, and the morale of the staff is dropping drastically.

This gym needs to improve the training area, purchase more volumes, replace the managers, figure out the HVAC situation, and invest in community.

Training area: bolt down racks, get taller pullup bars, get more hangboards, replace light bulbs, get a new system board… i mean come on.
Volumes: the walls get boring because we don’t have expert setters. At least spice up the wall.
Managers: I hear bad things from workers. Also, head setter swears to my friends. They dont stick around to talk/climb with community EVER. Does not like feedback. They are plateaued and so is their setting. GM doesnt climb and doesnt engage with community. Neither of them make the gym feel good… this is why your climbers leave. We are only here because it’s the only option. Fix it.
HVAC: It is usually 77-83deg in the summer. Even in the fall, it’s hot in the gym and staff wont open doors. When you take off shirt, setters give you nasty looks or post passive aggressive things on their personal instagrams. Lol.
Community: post events in gym, not just on IG. More events and more guest setters. Hire better managers that care about us and teach the staff to do the same. Invest in kids team. Actually accept feedback and criticism. Work with school groups and those who may struggle to afford memberships.

I just went to NorthMass in Indi and the setters approached me and talked with me about beta, my full body is sore and not just finger tendons, and the climbers here are happier and speak highly of the gym. Not to mention the air is clean even though they are investing in and making upgrades to their gym. This should be standard. I think it’s time to rethink this management - it’s not good.

β€”β€”β€”

(2024 update): Gym has gotten improvements to mats and holds which is nice. This gym does not use volumes on the commercial set which is MIND-BOGGLING. They also added the Stōkt app for the spraywall which is nice. However, gym doesn’t refresh the brushes, the setters and owner don’t welcome community feedback or engage/talk with members of community, and the gym workout area is… sad. No showers if that’s important, and bathrooms are cleaned well, grungy. Sets are becoming more diverse in style, but having no volumes makes the climbing repetitive set after set.
Water fountains are nasty and there is no ChalkEater so the air gets hot and chalky. They are the cash cow of the Hoosier Heights gyms, so they should be investing back in our gym. Will keep review updated as things improve :)

β€”β€”β€”

(2023 update): Really fun gym with huge potential. Currently working on lots of upgrades which is nice.

Setting is often times strength based and intuitive - unimaginative but can be fun!
Hoosier Heights is a terrible organization, but Climb NuLu is a great gym, just missing the support of its parent!

I've been here twice as a complete beginner and this place has been so welcoming and accessible. Great place to take the family and friends to introduce them to bouldering, but there's also tons of stuff for the advanced climber. Can't recommend it enough!

best bouldering gym in louisville!!! i come here with my friends all the time. i’m convinced it is the best functioning social hub in the city. everyone here is super friendly, very warm towards beginners, with plenty of room for growth.
that said, they do grade notoriously hard; it is hard to make the jump between the first few levels and beyond. in this sense, it is not the most beginner-friendly. BUT, everyone here is incredibly nice and supportive. you can find a great network of people here to help you embark on your climbing journey.

TL;DR: I love this gym but I am biased

Somehow I've never actually written a review for this gym, which is crazy to me, since this is where I started climbing.

The first time I went to Climb Nulu was in early 2016, when I was new to climbing, and I had a blast. I had a punch pass, and came a couple times a month. I climbed here until 2019, when I moved to Indianapolis for college and switched to a gym there. During my time with Climb Nulu as my home gym, I found it to have a great community and varied setting, and always enjoyed coming.

After the pandemic, I started taking climbing a lot more seriously, and eventually started competing. I've participated in Climb Nulu's annual Throwdown competition three (soon four) times, and placed highly. For the sake of transparency, it's important to note I have won both items and money from placing at these comps.

I really appreciate Climb Nulu adding a nonbinary category to their competition in 2024. They're the only gym in the midwest who offers this, to my knowledge. They also have gender neutral bathrooms, which I appreciate, although it is clear they weren't designed with this in mind.

Competition setting is different than normal setting, and so I cannot properly speak to how routes feel the rest of the year, or if there is a fair spread. I can say the competition setting is a good blend of "traditional" competition style and a more "outdoor climbing" style. I really enjoy this mix.

All in all, I have a soft spot for Climb Nulu. It's not a perfect gym, there are little issues here and there, but it doesn't need to be perfect. It's a damn good climbing gym.

There is a total of zero V0's in the entire gym because the routers aren't using the rating system properly. Newsflash ego-driven router, experts don't care about V0 or V1 anyway so how pointless, oh except you're alienating newer climbers and even beginners. How this got past the business guy above you I'm not sure. I bet the business loves lowering their chances of getting new customers. Fix your rating system and leave your ego at home.

walls are good, little harder than other bouldering gyms.
not a 5star review bc when i went to wash my hands i noticed there was a womens bathroom, then a All Gender bathroom. i went looking for the mens and realized THERE WASNT ONE. so why cant men have their own restroom like women have? get these leftist political views out of the climbing gyms. Ya'll want gender neutral bathrooms but only as a Mens bathroom. i dont want to be urinating and have some chick walk in on me. YOU CANT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. either have 3 bathrooms, or make both bathrooms as All Genders....ya'll preach equality and acceptance then make 1 way streets like this. the hypocrisy is wild, nah i wont be back

As a casual bouldering climber, this has everything I need. V0-2 good for warm ups or getting back in shape. A variety of grips also with under/over hang routes for harder stuff. I’ve never got bored working problems since they change up the routes fairly frequently.

Got a day pass for a good price. A few strikes against the facility though: Seems like there was a recent comp, but otherwise the setting seemed fairly dated. Called ahead to confirm there were showers and found out there weren't actually any upon arriving. Also a pretty serious accident occurred in the bouldering area while we were there. Happens all the time, I get it, but still bad vibes.

A nice, bright, very fun, bouldering gym. $13 day pass if you bring your own stuff and if you are new $15 day pass for your first time and it includes rental shoes. After that, $18 per day pass, rentals included. There are plenty of V-Beginner V0, V1, and V2 routes. Some of those are still very challenging for a beginner. The stuff from V3 up is also fun and varied. I have brought some beginner friends here a few times and they had a blast. Experienced climbers will love it too.

Other amenities include plenty of benches and tables to rest and hangout at, a campus board, hangboard, system wall, weights and barbell racks and a kids/beginner wall are in a separate area on the side. They also have an adjustable piece of equipment you can train your crack climbing on. They have a variety of other gym things too; besides what I mentioned above they also have kettlebells, dumbbells, exercise bands and benches and chairs for workouts and more. They also sell some climbing shoes and chalk and have a very small number of ropes in inventory as well.

This was definitely a cool space and a lot could be done with. Was a little disappointed, the gym is insanely sandbagged. Creativity was mid, every boulder problem was pretty much the same move with just a slightly different hold to make it a harder grade. In addition to that the staff was kind of cold/unfriendly. The gym employee was sitting on his phone even as I got up to the counter, wasn’t greeted and he just kept texting until I asked for a day pass. I work at a gym and always love hitting local gyms while I’m traveling and connecting with other climbers and just wasn’t a fan of the setting style or experience from the staff this time around. Climbing is an amazing sport and I’m an advocate of people falling in love with the sport, but the incentive to return isn’t high if a beginner can barely send a V1 and if the staff aren’t passionate about it either. Honestly Hate trashing on other places and genuinely never leave reviews but hoping this can help the gym improve and do better.

This was my first time at a climbing gym and I had a great experience. The staff helped us understand the safety procedures quickly and the price was very reasonable. It's not obvious to out-of-towners like me, but the climbing gyms around this part of the country tend to be harder because there's so much natural rock climbing in Kentucky, so the gyms cater towards the more experienced climbers. You will definitely be challenged as a beginner even in the easy climbs, but it's well worth the experience.

This was our first experience at Climb Nulu. I was kind of bummed to get there and have to do another set of waivers when I did it the night before, too. When you have 5 kids, 2 who are toddler/baby, you get that stuff done before you get there. The workers didn't seem too kid friendly, either. We were there for a 5yr old's birthday party so it doesn't seem like we were out of place. Overall it was really fun for the kids and I gave it 5 stars for that.

I love this gym, it has great problems and a nice community. I think the only problem I have is around 10am kids that can’t be above 7 years old start flooding in. While I like the idea of kids starting a new hobby, I find that most of the kids aren’t there to climb and are really just running around on the mats. Eventually they start to move into the back area but new families keep coming in. I still love this gym, but the experience just becomes worse when you have to worry about children running under you or disturbing your thoughts.

Love the gym, the setting, and the routes, but they really need to pay their workers more. $11/hour in the year of our lord 2022 is CRIMINAL. I pay $65/month for a membership here and I want them to be able to eat and pay rent.

I've been climbing for a few years now, and I was looking for a good climbing gym in Louisville. Climb Nulu was just that. The staff were super approachable, and the routes were interesting. Formerly enjoyed Climb Nulu as a member. My memory was free coffee in the mornings and high fives for good vibes.

Now?

You can only climb for an hour with a reservation and the mask police there are in heavy patrol (which is ironic because they don't like real police that do good work). I suppose this is one of the many downsides to being on the wrong side of the bridge.

It saddens me to see a great business have to make so many changes due to government mandates. In any years prior, Nulu got my 5 stars all day long.

We called ahead to make sure this was OK for younger kids like 3 and 7 yrs of age and talked to a friendly person who assured us it was great for kids and totally safe, but once we got there it wasn't as expected. We were told (and it's advertised) that they could help us if needed. Being that it was our first time trying anything like this and we mentioned this again upon arrival it was kind of a bummer. We asked for tips and assistance for the kids with absolutely none offered, and we're told to just follow the colors and that's all they gave by way of "helping". Personally would not recommend for newbies especially kids. The kids "room" had exercise equipment in there, and looked to doubled as a storage area. We didn't stay the full hour and they didn't seem to care what type of experience was had.

Louisville’s premiere bouldering gym. The facility has plenty of space for climbers of all skill levels, and offer lots of perks for members, including a training area, yoga, and an assortment of classes.

Been there recently on a team outing. Unfortunately they were preparing for a comp next day so we didn't have access to most of the gym. I wish they told us beforehand so we can make a decision.

Good bouldering gym, with tall walls and steep roofs. Old school problems settings but you can get pumped quick;-)

+ : tall, long routes, lot of space and problems. Clean and friendly.
- : lack of variety in problem settings (too left/right...). Extra price and extra pain for the first visit (3$ and 20mn of waiver filling)

Great bouldering gym. There are numerous walls to climb with many different problems to choose from. There is also a wall dedicated to climbing workouts with campus boards, training boards, and other hold options. The staff are friendly but pretty hands off. I like that they open early on Tuesday and Thursday. Check this place out.

If you're visiting and bring your own gear, they still charge you an extra $3 for your first visit (Wtf?). It's the dirtiest gym I've even been to, and the routes are also graded a bit heavy. (I flashed a bunch of their V6s, which is atypical for my ability level). That being said, I did find some well thought out and very fun projects as well. Definitely better than no bouldering, but I really think they could do better.

One of my family's favorite spots. My wife, two young kids, and I go every week and have a blast, not to mention, now we all have Popeye forearms from all the climbing. Most people here are eager to help if you're new so don't be bashful. Side note - their apparel is on fleek, so whoever orders that stuff, keep it up.

Probably the best climbing gym in Louisville right now. No toprope / sport climbing, but the bouldering is top notch. Routes get changed frequently enough that there's a great variety. The setters are also really creative and usually post a ton of fun stuff.

Amazing hobby to get into with a great friendly location to be passionate about it at.
I’ve gone off and on to Climb Nulu for 2.5 years. I have recently been going regularly again and have seen major improvements. Their training area has gotten quite comprehensive although I’d wish they get a couple treadmills back there again.
I only have two recommendations for Climb Nulu.
1. Their monthly membership has raised since when they first opened. It was expensive then and is now. It’s only worth it if your climbing at least two times a week. Which is fine for me since I do it 2-3 times a week BUT i I wish they would offer a membership with out the extras. It’s like they have justified the increase because of the free yoga and classes...but I’m never going to use those. And would be more then happy to agree to that and pay $10-15 less a month for strictly a climbing membership.
2. They try to do to much extra outside of rock climbing. Which they have gotten better about over the past couple years but still. I think it be more ideal to get rid of the ping pong table and picnic tables in the back training area and put more actual training stuff. Rather then forcing so much in one small area on the other side of the room.

I have been a member here for about six months and it is really satisfying to see how far I have progressed over this time. The atmosphere here is great. I never feel intimidate by the more experienced climbers. The walls are changed up frequently so every time I come there are new problems to solve. This is a great hobby and I recommend everybody give this a try.

I've been going for about 2 years now and It's a great place to climb.
They've gotten better at keeping the holds cleaner and have improved the cleanliness of the landing pads. Great place that's always improving.

Really nice gym. The staff was super friendly and there were plenty of routes for all grades. I brought my friend bouldering for the first time and he sent several routes, so there's plenty for beginners and advanced. The merch is cheap and so are the drinks and food. Overall I was very happy with my experience here.

Broke my leg here. It's not safe.
The rock was covered with chalk and when I slipped off I couldn't control how I fell like they claim you should be able to. Fact is that SEVERAL people have broken bones here and I wish I had known how likely it was before I started climbing here.
This summer I a co-worker told me a friend of hers had a similar issue where she tore something in her knee and shes still not recovered a year later. Don't risk it.

Great place for what it is; a comprehensive bouldering gym. New routes are set weekly for climbers of all skill levels, with a decent gym located inside as well. Perfect place for new climbers who have never climbed without ropes before. Most everyone who comes here is friendly and always willing to chat. Pricing is not too bad at $15 for a first timer which includes rentals. If you have a spare weekend I highly recommend stopping in to try it out. Very kid friendly as well, just keep an eye on them so they don't get in the way of the older climbers.

Completely full of positive energy upbeat people and some of the best human beings Louisville has to offer. My first climb which was solo, completely by myself, no friends at all, and plenty of people approached me and showed me different techniques of learning how to climb. They were not paid to do this, it was random strangers done this out of the kindness of their own heart. Therefore I came back a second time and went ahead and bought a membership. I highly recommend this place for anybody looking for physical activity around tons of positivity. All ages, not just young people, older people are welcome to try.

Climb NuLu is a great place to climb, has a great community, some of the best route setting I have seen anywhere and I love the diversity of wall set ups. Membership also includes yoga which happens everyday. The flexible hours make finding a time to climb easy.

Good place to go if you are new to climbing too. The women's climbing group that meets a few times a week is incredibly friendly and welcoming. Good place for kids also, just make sure to keep an eye on them to make sure that they stay safe and don't run on the mats under climbers that may fall. The gym set up is fun and inviting and the mats are squishy and safe but it is important to remember that climbing is an inherently dangerous sport.

Great Gym friendly staff and patrons. I went during non peak hours plenty of routes no matter what level of experience you have! Tall walls compared to what I'm used to. Some routes are graded too easy some are right on, one was graded V0 that should be V1+. None the less I had a great time and would recommend to any climber as a gym to climb at while visiting Louisville. It looks like the gym offers some interesting regular programs, based on fliers posted.

I’ve attended kindergartener’s birthday parties here as well as taken a handful of second-graders during an overnight to burn some energy. In all circumstances, the staff is friendly, the gym is in really good condition, and everyone involved has a blast.
I would highly recommend coming here for a private party in the beginner room (has more advanced stuff too). Having it be just your group is a wonderful plus.
There are also many more serious climbers at the gym (doing some really impressive stuff), so don’t think this place is just for kids. We were definitely the exception, not the norm. Private room is the way to go though, so you don’t feel like the kiddos are getting in the way of more serious endeavors (although no one ever made us feel that we were).

Best boulder spot in town! Very well kept walls and they are frequently reset. New routes to take on almost every visit! Also has a decent sized kids area with lower difficulties for them. On top of that they have a dedicated training room equipped with exercise machines and weights. Drop your stupid Planet Fitness pass and come get some real exercise!
