Absolutely one of the best gyms I've ever been into(to be fair it's the only MMA gym I've been to but still), the classes are extremely informative, the coaches are extremely nice and respectful. The PEOPLE in the gym itself are extremely respectful to new comers. This is a LEARNING ENVIROMENT! No ego, no being "better" than somebody else. Obviously people are going to be better at (x) martial art than others, but, it's not about BETTER here, it's about lifting up your brothers and sisters. Instead of having a bitter attitude, it's "Woah, I got my ass kicked, how did you do it?" Super great Gym, Chewie is one of the best coaches someone can ask for when it comes to Jiu-Jitsu and you can really see the passion oozing not just from him, but from even the blue belts that are coaching here. Absolute 10 out of 10, I would recommend and praise this place to the stars.

I travel a lot for work and dropped in to Derby City. This is an amazing facility and the members and staff treated me like one of their own. I've followed Chewy's YouTube channel for years, and he ran an amazing class. He's a fantastic instructor who runs a really phenomenal gym filled with great people. I've been training at this gym for about 2 years now and I consider it a second home. I've made many friends and I've learned tons of Jiu Jitsu. There are dozens of black belts, all of whom will gladly share their knowledge with you. Many of them have different strengths and it makes the gym an endless resource for learning. Chewy is a fantastic teacher and top notch practitioner. It's always very rewarding to be taught by someone who clearly loves the sport and is invested in his students. I'm grateful that I've discovered this gym, and jiu jitsu in general, because it feels like even in a time where many of us fight and argue, there is still a place that can bring us together (even if it involves carefully folding and choking each other!). If you are at home and spending your time surfing youtube, instagram or facebook, then why not stop by. I am definitely glad I did.

Good school but I would advise anyone thinking of joining the gym to not sign a contract. They have all kinds of ploys to get you to pay more money. I would sign up for one month at an introductory price. If they can't offer that at a good price, I would walk away. Absolutely do not sign a contract.

Honestly, I came in excited to learn and improve, but unfortunately my experience at Derby City MMA was really disappointing. As sorta a beginner, I expected at least some guidance or structure - instead, we were basically left to teach ourselves or follow other students. The instructor barely engaged with new people and we actually never even interacted and it felt more like a free-for-all than an actual class people pay for.
I'm not someone who needs to be handheld, but when you're paying for professional instruction, there should be some actual teaching involved - especially for people who want to build good fundamentals.
There might be value here for experienced fighters who already know what they're doing, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking to learn or improve from scratch. A little coaching and direction goes a long way, and I didn't get that here.

I attended the 10:30 am No Gi class on Friday, 9/27/2024 when I was in town for Louder Than Life. I meant to leave a review before now because I had such an awesome experience but I completely forgot.

The first thing I noticed was how clean the place was. The mats especially were super clean and you can tell that this gym prioritizes hygiene! Super clean and the receptionist Trish was super friendly and helpful. The instructor Chewy is top notch and runs a great class! He has a huge YouTube following and he is just as great of a teacher in person as I expected he would be. All of the other students in the class were super inviting and welcoming, as well as willing to help show the finer details of the techniques. If I lived in Louisville I would 100% train here. This is the best gym I've ever trained at and I will definitely visit here every time I'm in town. A very awesome school to train at as a home base or as a visitor. My wife and I are in town visiting her family, and Chewy and all the others at Derby City welcomed us in and gave us some great rolls and instruction. Chewy is as personable off camera as he is on camera.

This gym has a wide variety of class times. It's obvious right away that the culture at Derby City MMA is very healthy. Chewy knows his stuff as well as his students.

I dropped in for both Gi and No Gi BJJ classes while in town for Turkey Day.

Chewy is the man, runs a great class, and spent time with every student ensuring to help provide feedback and tweaks appropriate to their proficiency level. Even as a drop in student he stopped by to add and improve my drilling technique.

The gym is clean with changing rooms and lots of dedicated mat space.

If I lived in Louisville this would be my gym.

Experience here was really great.

Atmosphere was welcoming, no one trying to rip my head off, considerate of previous injuries.

Technique and coaches are phenomenal! No issues learning the techniques. Coaches and training partners were very patient and forthcoming with knowledge help you apply the lesson that best works for you.

I visited Derby City MMA passing through from Columbus, OH to Nashville. I did a afternoon class with Chewy. I've visited 5 - 7 gyms in my 2.5 years of training and this was the best experience I've had at a BJJ gym. Chewy checked in with my several times throughout the session to ensure I understood the technique. Also, when we started to roll he came up to me and asked as soon as we started to ensure we had a chance to roll. Fort Knox brought me close to the Louisville area; I called to inquire about military stopping in to train while on temporary duty. They were closed at that time but someone called me back maybe 20 minutes later, I believe her name is Trish, and answered my questions. They are very friendly for military drop in training. I arrived at the gym on Friday evening and was immediately greeted by Evan, he asked me the basic gym questions such as how long I'd been training for and what classes I was looking to attend there. He gave me a tour of the gym. One impression that stands out immediately is how clean the gym is, especially the jiu jitsu mats. I took the leg lock class on Friday evening taught by Dustin. Class was great, good variety of experience levels to work with. Dustin was an awesome teacher who explained the technique in great detail and went around making sure everyone was working the technique properly. Took a class on Monday night taught by Chewy (even got to pummel with him during warm up). He is just as friendly and extroverted in person as he is in his videos. Class was probably about 30 students or so and he will remember your name despite it being the first time meeting you. Class is fast paced, you will get a great workout in. Other students are very friendly and welcoming to work with here. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to Fort Knox so I can train here again. Derby City MMA is definitely a gem of a training facility.

Did a drop in JiuJitsu class here and it was great. Inviting atmosphere, nice people, knowledgeable instructors.

Walked around and observed some of the boxing instruction going on. Instructor there appeared to be very knowledgeable. Everyone was wearing the proper safety gear. All seemed to be good there.

I'm going to give my honest feedback here after two months attending classes. The beginning boxing class was the only one I liked. The coach is cool, patient, works with your skills. So is the coach that ran Saturday beginning kickboxing classes. But the regular kickboxing class and the regular BJJ classes are not beginner friendly. The regular KB coach is super easily annoyed and I just get the vibe he don't wanna deal with newbies. The BJJ instructor for the regular class just rolled and chilled with his wife the whole time, and she's so awkward and unapproachable (she's the women's BJJ coach). You had to bounce up and down and raise your hand for any coaching. He pretty much just said "hey, do this, then roll. Have fun". .like...ugh. Idk. Didn't like it. Wasn't for me. I love boxing and kickboxing and really wanted to learn grappling but genuinely, it just didn't feel super welcoming. No one was rude or anything, just didn't feel beginner friendly in some instances. It's also expensive, they charge a cleaning fee and the place naaassstttyyyyy. They don't wipe down between sessions and there's no tub to clean your feet before getting on the mat like the past several gyms I've been to had. Also who charges for cleaning ! Yall already charge a ton and the place ain't that clean, why put that fee on the customers??? I'm not saying it should be spotless, I mean we're spitting, sweating, and bleeding. But my first day there someone puked and the puke sat there for quite a while before being cleaned (I'd be embarrassed and scrambling to clean that asap), and it just feels nasty to be on a mat with hours long sweat and spit. They just transition to the next class, never noticed a clean in between. (Which was common place at my last mixed martial arts gym) Can't speak for the kids classes, but I've heard good things. Just if you're a beginner stick with beginning courses only, not the regular classes. Although they're boasted as being beginner friendly, they're not. And not because they're "too difficult " (I don't mind that ) they just don't have patience for noobs, it's got a super cliquey feel.

For BJJ, coaches are really good about pointing out the details of the move(s) of the day and correcting during drilling of the move. I have been to classes of 6 of the coaches including "Chewy", and they all have a similar approach to teaching so dropping in to a class taught by a different coach is no biggie. This definitely helps myself as a newbie feel more confident bc I know what to expect going into class. I appreciate that they enforce wearing shoes off of the mats and no shoes on the mats, since there are a lot of kids (and new or traveling adults) that come through.

For weightlifting, they have a coach available to program your workouts tailored to your needs including Olympic weightlifting. There are 2 lifting platforms and plenty of barbells and plates. They also have a rig, benches, cable machines, dumbbells, kettlebells, leg press, belt squat, dip station, GHD, bike erg, ski erg, air bike, and boxes for jumping. On Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, there are Olympic lifting classes for *anyone* - not just gym members - with the Derby City Barbell Club.

For boxing and kickboxing, they have several bags and a boxing ring. I've been to a couple kickboxing classes, and it was definitely difficult, but the direction was good.

Derby City MMA is great! I was in the area for almost a month and trained here for a couple of weeks. Every instructor that taught was knowledgeable, articulate, and paid attention to the details to ensure appropriate understanding of the instruction. When I found out I would be working in Louisville KY for a short time, I reached out to Derby City MMA to see if I could train there in the evenings.

The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, he gym's culture was open and inviting, and I had an all around great time. In particular, some of their Brown and Black belts helped me out with my triangle and back control games.

I didn't get to meet "Chewie" (he was out of the country either competing or doing seminars) but if you judge someone by the quality of their students and colleagues then he's done a great job establishing a solid training culture and community.

I was in Louisville for a couple of weeks and needed a place to train bjj. When I walked into the Derby City MMA I knew I was in the right place. The staff were extremely helpful and polite. It wasn’t expensive at all. There were lots of color belts with a lot of experience to train with. The instructors were black belts that had a wealth of knowledge. I picked up a couple of awesome techniques that I had not seen in my two years of training. I was treated like part of the team for the short time I was there. Chewy was a really cool guy that instructed half the classes Himself. I hope that I’m in Louisville again soon so I can do it again.

I stopped in for a Saturday class recently. I was traveling, I knew I needed to pass through Louisville, so I made sure to leave early enough to make a 10am class.

Had a great time. There were about 20 on the mats, including 3 black belts. Lots of very experienced guys.

Nice physical facility- small, but with designated locker rooms, and pads on the walls, lots of nice touches that you don't see at every gym.

And great atmosphere. Serious about training and improving, but also friendly and generous.

Good place to learn at. Predatory business practices. Has you sign a contract for a term of 3 or 6 months. And then they charge you li toy after the contract is over. What’s the point of even having the contract except bad business?

I was in Louisville to see some family and came into this gym as a walk in and I can’t recommend this place enough. I travelled from CT to KY for my wife’s work conference and was looking for a place to train in the Louisville area. I emailed them the night before to see if they allowed visitors, and they responded very quickly and said yes. As I arrived, I was greeted with open arms. The staff at the counter was very nice, as were the instructors. The gym was very clean and the students/instructors were incredibly talented. One thing that stuck out was that when I rolled with the black belts, they each asked me “do you have any injuries I should know about?” before each roll. I thought that was pretty cool. As I recently had knee surgery last year, it was nice know know I was in a safe and ego free environment. I will absolutely be coming back, should I ever be in the area, and would recommend this gym to anyone who loves the art of BJJ and looking for a quality place to train!

I traveled to the Louisville area recently and wanted to get some training in and Derby City MMA topped my search. I had the incredible opportunity to drop in on a Tuesday evening, taught by Chewy. The atmosphere was awesome but was even more impressive was how Chewy, Adam and the team in attendance made you feel as a drop in. They were welcoming and made me feel like I was part of the team. Cheat’s knowledge and his ability to break down position and teach was phenomenal. Did a drop-in class this Saturday morning and was truly impressed with how welcome Chewy and everyone else made me feel as a visiting student.

Rolls were great and quite technical. Class focused on two, sequential techniques with plenty of time to drill and spar out of each position--letting you first learn and then workshop each move.

Dropped in for a class with a friend while in town for training. Front desk staff were great in getting us situated. We trained in a gi class, I was apprehensive as purple belt when he started showing a move set that I have not drilled extensively. I dropped in for a no-gi BJJ class while traveling from out of town. Everyone was super welcoming and the training environment was laid back. There was a new student in the class for the day, and I was very impressed at how the instructor (Chewy) took the time to welcome and help him out on his first day, all while effectively running the class, answering questions, and demonstrating the technique for the day for the group.

If you’re in the Louisville area, I highly recommend giving this gym a try. And if you’re from out of town, it’s a great place to get some good rounds in without the fear of injury.

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit and train with Coach Chewjitsu and the team at Derby City MMA. I am from Los Angeles, and a black belt in BJJ. In town for work, I hoped to find a friendly place to train while I was there. I am a big fan of Nick Alban AKA Chewjitsu and enjoy his Youtube videos and Podcast, and was very thankful for the warm welcome and rolls with his incredible team. Nick led an amazing class and was thoughtful enough to teach in detail, have his team practice the move, then he would circle everyone up for Q&A and trouble shooting. I learned a lot during my visit, made some new friends, and thoroughly enjoyed to fantastic vibe at Derby City MMA. I will definitely be back.

Been training here since February of 2021 and I have loved everything about it. Derby city has tons of well experienced coaches who push you to be better. I visited Derby City MMA from New York City during my Winter Break. Why I chose to visit all stemmed from tapping out to a submission I had no idea how to escape while I was training at Renzo Gracie's. Determined to not let that happen again, I searched on YouTube various escapes and discovered Chewie's YouTube videos. I tried Chewie's escape the next day and it worked! Been a fan and subscriber ever since!
Since I was driving through the area, I wanted to pay an appreciation visit and personally thank him.

My visit left a lasting impression. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. I made some new friends like Tony (pictured on my right). I extended the courtesy that if he and his family ever visits NYC, I'll gladly host them and invite them to Renzo's to train!

What I also enjoy about visiting new gyms is learning new ways to learn. One of the unique practices I picked up from Derby City MMA is having us all line up along the wall. Chewie divided us into three groups: A, B, and C. Each group was assigned 2 upper body submissions and 1 lower body submissions. These were the only finishes you were allowed to do. Then we began our rolling sessions with anyone in the class.

What I enjoyed about this task is it made me more hyper-focused during each roll. It made me rethink my transitions and setups, and took me outside my comfort zone and usual game plan. I LOVED IT! Definitely taking that back with me and sharing it at Renzo's.

Thanks again Chewie and everyone for making me feel welcome. I will definitely remember my training there and look forward to coming back and visiting and training longer with all of you!

This is my second time training here. I live in another state but was on a trip to Louisville so I stopped by for a drop in. The staff was fantastic. They let me step right in and join two classes. I learned a lot about the wing sweep which I've never trained before. I also learned some variations to the scissor sweep which was great as well. Last, we trained some diamond guard (high guard) which I used just last night at my home gym. Really good technique to lock down a bigger stronger training partner with many options for arm bars, americanas, triangles, ooma platas etc.

My wife and I stopped by for open mat while in town visiting family. This is an amazing gym and everyone was super chill. There was incredible talent and everyone I rolled with, white to black belt, was friendly and fun. Everyone was also great with my wife though only one other female was there. I was on a work trip for the GIE EXPO and I stopped by to get a session in and it was a very good experience. I am a brown belt and I got to roll with some black belts that where very good and welcoming 🙏. I rolled with a killer purple belt who surprised me with some great pressure and armbars. Had the opportunity to train at Derby City MMA. From the moment I entered the facility, behind the counter, I was greeted with a warm, welcoming, smiling face. From there, it just got better. I must've been spoke to about ten students before I had a chance to introduce myself to Adam, the First degree Black Belt instructor. Class started promptly with warm-ups, then instructions.

Professor Adam was very detailed orientated in demonstrating todays technique. Something that as either a new, intermediate, or advanced student is looking for in an instructor, and school.
