Having to book a day pass that needs to be approved and reviewed is absolutely pathetic. This place deserves to be publicly shamed by the climbing community. Unwelcoming, uninviting, crummy hours. Abysmal business that needs to take a long look in the mirror at themselves and ask themselves why they are okay with such an unwelcoming policy. Only gym in America Iβve ever seen that upholds this policy, and then chooses to stand on it while customers wait to be let in. Who do they think they are.

The employees there are really cool. Very helpful and willing to answer questions. Also, it's huge. Even with about 50 people in there, everyone has some space to climb. The only negative is that place really needs a good cleaning. I know it's tough because if all the dust, but 30 minutes a week just wiping down the area up front would be great. It's still worth membership if you love climbing though, or even if you want to learn.

LEF is my favorite place in all of Lexington. Iβve been climbing there for about four months, and even when I was a beginner, I felt welcomed from day one. The staff is super friendly and always ready to help. They explain the rules, show you how to use the equipment, teach you the basics, and are always available to answer any questions. The community is amazing. During my first two weeks, I made a lot of friends, and I still meet new people all the time.
The gym is really well-equipped. They have bouldering, sport climbing, moonboard, handboard areas, free weights, cables, and machines for general workouts. They also guide you on routes if you need help. I like that they host events like Halloween climbing nights and competitions, which makes the gym feel like a real community.
The only downsides for me are that some routes lately seem sandbagged, with that I mean they put an easier rating on a route than it actually is, for example, a route might be labeled V3, but it feels more like a V4 or even V5. It can be a little frustrating, but itβs really not a big deal. Also, during peak hours the gym can get very crowded, but thatβs normal for any gym. Honestly, these things donβt take away from the overall experience. LEF is an incredible place to climb, train, and meet people. Being the only climbing gym in Lexington, itβs definitely worth it. (None of the photos were taken during peak hours).

Absolutely love this place!! We moved out west but made it a stop in our itinerary when visiting to come back here. Hands down one of the best climbing gyms I have been too. I miss this place so much. Highly highly recommend this gym! They have everything you could need. And itβs huge!!

Probably the tallest climbing gym I have been in. It's a bit pricey but myself and the kids really enjoyed ourselves. Great bouldering set up and I really like the smaller area so the kids could try it too. My son won't stop talking about it. Really good idea for a birthday party.

Edit: Thatβs my bad, the font is really small but it does say on the mobile browser that entry by day pass needs reservation. Compared to the size of buttons for purchasing entry, I just completely missed it.
The gym is clean, open, and really well laid out. Bouldering was fun, interesting, and plentiful! Auto-belays are in good shape and routes were really interesting and fun! There definitely could be more set for TR/auto-belay/lead imo, but what was there was really fun. Staff were cool, albeit a little standoffish but they were still helpful and friendly.
My only complaint is that itβs not straightforward on the mobile browser that a day pass holder has to make a reservation to visit the gym. I donβt know how common this is, but had I not read someone else in the reviews complain about this, I wouldnβt have thought to check.
In all, a good experience and Iβd definitely go again!

1st time climbing indoors and 2nd time climbing ever and LEF didn't disappoint. The facility is clean and the staff were more than friendly and helpful. I must admit we didn't make it to the top of any route π We can't wait to go back. The price is more than fair in my opinion.

LEF is a great place to climb with many different options available (bouldering, auto belay, top rope, and lead climbing).
My main issue with the facility is the price and the decisions made to limit price options for people. When I first started going, there was an option to pay $50/month without rental gear included. You could optionally tack on an extra $25/month for rental gear to be included with that. I thought this was extremely reasonably priced. However, now the cost is $100/month, with rental gear included, and there are no other options available to those who cannot afford that price. As a result of this change, I will probably never climb there again after this month simply due to its high price and lack of alternative options for those who struggle to afford it. If you know someone who goes to UKY, the Johnson Center offers a cheap alternative climb ($10 for a guest pass), albeit with severely limited climbing options (just top rope available). Still, I had a lot of fun on my last visit.

We love LEF! Best place to hang out with your family and friends. I never thought I could climb at my age but now I love it! so fun for us to all do together. My son is on a team and has learned so much in a short time from Coach Alex not just about climbing but has gained lots of confidence and meet some new friends. All the staff are super friendly and kind. Adam has been wonderful and patient with the kids and our frequent requests for help! So happy we found a place that works for all of us to have fun and be together and challenge ourselves.

Came here out of state trying to climb. Too bad they won't let you in past a certain hour if you don't have a membership or a reservation ahead of time.
I unfortunately can't even talk about the experience climbing out of state because I didn't get a chance.
I'm sure this place is great, but what's the point if you can't ever experience it as an outsider.

My partner and I started climbing here almost a year ago now and we've really enjoyed both the climbing and the atmosphere! Everyone is always really nice, there's a lot of great programs available for members, and they change up the climbs fairly often so there's always something new. We've made good friends in the time we've been climbing here and we would recommend it to everyone whether you're a first-time climber, or you've been climbing for years.

I love this gym. The hours could be better .The price for a day pass is $17 now, which I think is ridiculous. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Edit: RIP this gym used to be the tits! Friendly staff, better hours, cheaper day rate. The staff has terrible customer service skills anymore (I miss the staff from 5 or 6 years ago) the price has doubled for a day pass with the added inconvenience of having to reserve a time slot and not opening till noon?!? As other have mentioned the staff will be snarky about you not having a time slot scheduled even if the gym will be close to empty.

LEF provides an inclusive community in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. Along with indoor rock climbing and bouldering, the facility boasts yoga classes multiple days a week and a fully-outfitted workout center. ZERO STARS!!! Came here for a day pass just now to get some climbing in on a rainy day. Horrible customer service!!! Was basically told they don't want our business. Was told we had to make an online reservation. We drove an hour and a half to get here and just asked since we're already here, can they just put us down for the reservation. She said "no" the customer needs to do the work requesting it online. Which also meant we would have to wait nearly an hour for the next time slot. Which seemed crazy anyway since place looked very slow with very few people and parking barely full at all. Will not return if this is the level of customer service they think is normal. Have been to over a dozen other gyms across the nation and not one of them has this horribly inconvenient policy. Good job l, LEF, telling climbers you don't want their business. Message received.

We stopped at the gym this weekend and had such a great experience! I would definitely recommend trying it out. We had 2 young kids with us and they were really accommodating. Our kids had fun and there were lots of options for them to try. I liked the varying levels of difficulty so the kids had more than just one route to try. The front desk was super helpful and they seem genuinely passionate and excited about climbing and teaching people about it!

The space is very cool and offers a lot, but the front desk staff is unwelcoming, rude, and uninterested, if they show up to the desk at all. The setting is cool, but being the only place to climb in Lexington is their biggest advantage. If I had the choice, Iβd love to go somewhere else. I actively encourage people to choose a place to climb where the staff want you to be there and use their facilities.

Day pass is too expensive and they don't offer anything between it and a membership. Majority of the bouldering wall is suuuuuuper greasy. Other than that it's a solid gym. Nice setting even on the lower end of ratings. I'd like to go a could times a month, but at $30 (more if u rent gear) a pop I won't go much

This gym is more of a novelty for the lex community than a real gym. Yes it has good equipment, but having to reserve and pay so much doesn't cater to the climbing community. The staff is very rude, at least they were for me. I had to get certified for belay on top rope, which is fine, but because my method was wrong, they wouldn't clear me for 24 hours. I use a GriGri and have been for 15+ years, and instead of showing me how they want it, they just told me I was wrong. Not a great experience, overly priced, snarky staff.

Update: the route setting right now feels *awkward*. I donβt know whatβs up, if the setters are trying to branch out stylistically, but it needs cleaned up.
Fantastic facility for climbing training. The space is large and really has something for everyone including first-time climbers and kids. Two things could use improvement: at the timeframe I went last winter there could be more footholds on the routes on the lead wall. I expect to have multiple foot options on all climbs up to a particular difficulty. Also, the boulders tend to be set a little bit on the dynamic side, which is a higher risk for injuries especially for folks who have previous injury.

2/3 stars for facility and setting. 0 stars for music. If you want to get psyched to cry in a bathtub LEF has the tunes for you. Coming from a large west coast gym I can assure ownership that there exists appropriate, family friendly, UPBEAT, music easily found and compiled with little effort that will do your facility justice. Silence is preferable to another blaring Atlantis Morissette cover or that 'never know you love her till you let her go' song. Please. People are coming in to train, send, and socialize, not explore the tortured path of the obscure emo singer songwriter.

Man this place is a bummer.
Iβm going to continue to climb here because itβs unfortunately the only option in the city but if a hint of competition existed people would leave in droves.
First off, the staff is great and this review isnβt directed at them, rather the owners and upper management that absolute refuse to take feedback that clearly rings through the whole gym.
The bouldering is awful. Itβs dominated by comp sets that take up half the wall and by nature donβt allow for many adjacent boulder problems. Because of already limited bouldering space it renders most of the bouldering useless. See the previous review and note this isnβt just a frustration of experienced climbers as it hinders newer climbers too.
Fortunately the rope climbing was still pretty good, up until this week. Now they installed 2 new auto belays on the only vertical wall that was previously dedicated to lead climbing. Itβs already nearly impossible to climb during βafter workβ hours and this just made it worse.
They charge a premium rate for a small facility with awful hours, nearly $100/month. They are open from 10am-9pm making it impossible to get a session in before work if you have a morning free. Have fun rushing here from work before they close at 9 and fighting crowds the whole time.
Opening from 8am-10pm would make a dramatic difference with crowds and general accessibility.
The new moonboards are great but one is fixed at 25 degrees rendering it useless for anything harder than V6. Oh and they donβt let you use powered chalk on the moonboards, only liquid chalk. Which, surprise, when used in excess will grease holds up worse in the long run than powdered chalk that is consistently brushed.
Itβs a bit disappointing considering if they would actually value member feedback this could be a great facility.

Medium size climbing gym but is not a good place for beginners. There are barely any bouldering walls or auto belay walls that are manageable for beginners even if you are reasonably fit. Booking a spot for climbing is easy, many spots always available but there isnβt enough to keep you occupied as a beginner for more than an hour.

Five stars for Alex Davis - super focused trainer who makes all work fun. I always see her working for the betterment of the facility and the community, whether that's easily wrangling a lineup of children she coaches, encouraging her Power Hour in the weight room, or just constantly cleaning and tidying up LEF itself. I've been able to hit my lifting goals because of her, and I've become a better climber for it.

This review is for Alex Davis who works at LEF as a trainer, coach and in many other roles. Alex is the most motivating trainer Iβve ever had. I take a weekly class from her called Power Hour that I highly recommend if you want to train in the weight room with a knowledgeable, safe, and super fun trainer. She is not only amazing training adults, I also see her having the best time coaching kids and teens. I trust and value Alex so much as a member of the LEF community.

One of the best facilities Iβve been to of its size. Would highly recommend to any climber regardless of experience or ability.
Iβve been going to LEF 5+ days per week for the past six weeks in place of a regular commercial gym membership. Leaving Lexington I have zero complaints or qualms with my membership. I met Gwen my first day and saw her frequently throughout my time at LEF. She was highly professional and very engaged; she consistently coached me and others while she wasnβt working the front.
Facility: the facility is very clean and a great size for the population of the surrounding community. The main climbing room is consistently clean and auxiliary areas are well maintained. LEF also provides a weight room for members, which is well equipped, even for serious lifters. My only complaint is lack of hamstring curl or leg extension machines. There are also 4 different moon boards. I can only speak to bouldering but problems are frequently rotated/set and are made with various techniques/experience levels in mind.
Management: I had limited interaction with management, but I can only infer that theyβre engaged and experienced. Community engagement appears to be a top priority with speciality nights/events. Staff are of a high-caliber in both technical expertise and customer service. Management demonstrates active capital investment into the facility with two new moon boards being set up (originally just two) going into August. LEF management is doing something right!
Culture: overall very friendly and cooperative culture at LEF. I only had 2 interactions over the past 6 weeks with other climbers that would lead me to believe otherwise.
Again, I would highly recommend LEF to any climber in the area or for those passing through. LEF has set the standard for the next gyms in my bouldering journey.

Consider this a 5-star review for Alex Davis, LEF's newest trainer and climbing coach. I met Alex tonight when she overheard me say the bathroom was out of soap and kindly offered to take care of it. Alex spoke first, made eye contact, smiled, and asked how I was doing. She was warm, welcoming, and very friendly. It was my first experience of this kind with a LEF staff member. As a member of the gym and patron since its opening, it felt wonderful to be noticed and served. Thanks, ALEX!

Edit...many years later. Still an awesome gym. Wish they would add cracks, considering their recent popularity. They put up some good and hard routes for the grades on the big wall. The boulders are also hard for the grade, as it should be on both accounts. Needs more cracks!!

This was an awesome facility with great staff. Our family had a wonderful time our first time there. They have many auto-belay routes (I think around 8 or so) with multiple colored routes at each auto-belay line so you have so many different options to climb. We loved it! Our kids loved it as well.

nice gym, enjoyed my time here. 2 things i didn't like as much: not a huge fan of the washers as indicators for the grade. can be a bit tough to see and sometimes it's not clear which hold it's for. would prefer tape.
there should also be more down climbing jugs for us older folks who want to save their knees.

Awesome, friendly, and super helpful staff. Iβm new to climbing and theyβve patiently answered questions. Thereβs plenty of bouldering options for newbies, as well as auto belayed climbs. Truly appreciate the later hours too, itβs what convinced me that I could try this as I live out of county and sometimes work late.
They constantly change out routes, but not too often so you have plenty of time to work on problems. I love all of the comps they hold too!

LEF makes climbing an accessible and inviting experience for kids and adults of all skill levels. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is inclusive and it's easy to feel at home here. Lots of options for every budget with a great selection of walls and boulders. This is a place where both novice and seasoned climbers are welcome.
