While Pelican Athletic Club offers a variety of classes and activities for kids during the summer which my 11-year-old enjoys their policies around drop-off and gym entry for minors are frustrating and inconsistent.
Currently, parents are required to physically walk in children under a certain age during working hours. This creates a major inconvenience for working parents like myself and my husband. What's more confusing is that a 14-year-old can walk in unaccompanied, but my 11-year-old cannot even enter the facility with their 17-year-old sibling, who is considered old enough to come in alone. This policy feels arbitrary and outdated, especially during the summer when many kids are attending camps or classes while parents are at work.
Adding to the frustration is the lack of consistency among staff. Not everyone enforces this rule the same way, which is why I was unaware of the restriction until recently. If the policy were applied clearly and uniformly, perhaps it wouldnβt be as frustrating but the mixed messaging makes it worse.
We pay a premium price for this membership and expect clear, reasonable rules that support working families. I spoke to management about my concerns, but unfortunately, the conversation felt more like they were listening just to respond rather than to make any meaningful change.
Pelican could be a great place for families, but unless they reevaluate these policies and improve communication among staff, itβs hard to justify the cost and hassle.

The gym itself is very nice. Everything else is very questionable. I signed up for this gym and was actively going for around 3-4 months. Ran into some financial issues and they refused to help me out in any way possible considering itβs over $100 a month for a single person to go here. This is still being taken out of my account as soon as it can, regardless of your situation they only care about you paying them. Iβm barely making it by but at least Pelican Athletic Club gets their $100 a month.

The best club on the north shore. Dozens of exercise classes, two large weight lifting rooms, two large swimming pools, newly remodeled locker rooms, kiddy splash pad, yoga room, pickleball courts and 14 lighted tennis courts. A really GREAT place to play tennis and exercise. πΎπͺ

I was interested in transferring to PAC from another gym, so call and inquired about membership. I got a tour from on of the membership representatives and she was very helpful. During this tour I was promised a 3 day trial of the facility before deciding to join, which I thought was generous. I scheduled the dates with the rep and planned my week accordingly, as I am very busy day to day. To my surprise when I arrived in the morning on my first day, there was no record that I was scheduled to trial the facility. The woman working the front desk came across as slightly rude, and acted as if I was lying to get in. When asked who was working with me, they did not recognize the name of the membership rep. She had took my name down on card as if I was inquiring about membership, and said she would figure it out. I was not allowed access to the facility. When I left I emailed the original membership representative about the issue, and politely explained that this interaction was embarrassing, and inconvenient since I had to plan my day around being there at a certain time. She replied and assured me that she did indeed schedule my time and would find out what went wrong, and I asked her to reschedule my 3 day trial to instead start on the next day. A few hours later I get a call from the rep, explaining that the woman at the front desk had been out of the country for some time, and had never met the rep. On the phone she also mentioned βthat since I was allowed in todayβ¦β, so I reiterated that I was NOT allowed in. On the background of the phone call I can hear another woman saying that I was and saying that they can ,βcheck the camerasβ implying that I was lying! I told them to go ahead and check the cameras, and that I donβt understand the hostility from the employees. I told them that Iβm no longer interested, which was disappointing cause I do like the facilities itself. I would like to add that the membership rep that I was working with directly was perfectly polite, and probably just stuck in a strange situation. Honestly all the confusion wouldβve been no big deal if the customer service was a bit more accommodating and more respectful. I really donβt understand the purpose of the hostility.

If you enjoy ~10% rate hikes every year, then this is the club for you! Still blaming the supply chain and labor shortages. Now that they cannot continue richly profiting from $7.25 / hour labor it gets passed onto the consumer. It is comical how they use their capital expenditures to justify the hike. So because you reinvest revenue back into the club, rates need to go up to recoup your investment quicker? Would rates remain the same if ownership kept the money as profit and did not reinvest in the facilities? Hint: NO!

I have been coming to PAC for three years. Prior to joining PAC I was using the gym at my subdivision. I feel that PAC has a lot more to contribute as they have group classes and individual trainers that keep you motivated and also check your form. Now that I am semi retired, PAC has become my new social outlet. I love to see the same faces at the classes I attend and to catch up with the new friends I have made. The gym itself is very clean and the equipment is kept up-to-date as well.

I have visited a few times (I live in CA as my daughter and her family are members! This is a top notch Athletic club with so many activities! Their daycare is fantastic, their tennis courts are great, the pool is awesome and the swim team are fun to watch, the exercise classes are plentiful, the gym equipment is well maintained. The cafe is good, the restrooms and locker areas are clean and modern. OMG Our daughter and her family are HUGE fans! This is an operation that should be scaled and replicated in all cities across the country!! The Bennett family has the secret sauce to success! Also, we play a lot of pickleball in CA and that's being added outdoors now at the Pelican Athletic Club! We love this place!! Keep up the great work!

PAC is a solid club with all the amenities you would want in a major athletic club. The have several pools, tennis courts, basketball court, weights, etc. I would say that the price is fair compared to the other large athletic clubs in the area. I would recommend if you lived in the area.

I have been a member for about 5 months now and am updating my original 5 star review, I wish I could give them more than five stars. I have taken several of the group classes here and I love them. I am getting in great workouts and the instructors are awesome. Yoga and Barre are great with fantastic instructors, my personal favorite class is The Red Zone, itβs a high energy class set to music and the instructor, Denise, is amazing. The instructors are all very knowledgeable and have shown me alternate exercises to help work around knee pain, basically they make the classes accessible by offering alternate exercises if you need them while sill making you feel included in the class. Between, eating healthier and taking advantage of what the club has to offer I have dropped over 50 pounds since joining. I couldnβt be happier. (Original post follows) The Pelican Athletic Club is phenomenal. Everything there is high end, high quality, clean, and I would go so far as to say luxurious. They have all the free weights, machines, and cardio you could ever ask for. Tennis courts, basketball courts, and two pools. The locker room/bathroom/shower area is huge, extremely clean, and classy. I stayed away from it for a long time because of the membership price, however, now that I have joined I think it is worth every penny. I particularly like the pool for the great cardio workout I get from lap swimming. They have a ton of classes from yoga to HITT, I havenβt done one yet personally but when I have looked in on them they look fantastic, I am looking forward to giving a class a try. This place is so much more than a gym and I feel as though the premium price is well worth the premium services they provide. I highly recommend the club. I would be remiss if I didnβt mention how friendly and professional the staff are, they are outstanding.

Decent gym to fit various workout needs. Pool area and tennis courts are nice but starting to show their age. Staff interactions aren't consistent. Have had several less than ideal encounters with staff who don't deliver superior service. Also, training staff are not very responsive. I was calling around to local health clubs to get membership pricing. The person that answered the phone was very rude and cold. Telling me the front desk doesnt give out membership information, you have to call back later. It really gave me a vibe that i dont want to be apart of this place. Meanwhile another health center in the area was more than happy to give me any information over the phone. If someone calls wanting to join your gym you shouldnt be rude or unable to provide them with the correct information

I am absolutely not one to complain or write reviews about places, but my first interaction with this facility and its staff was very disappointing. The front desk staff was of no help to me and extremely rude. I also felt nothing but disrespect during my tennis lesson. This was my first lesson in quite a few years because I am wanting to get back into the sport I used to love, and the coach I had made me feel so discouraged as well as called me a βkidβ incessantly.... (I am an adult, 100% on my own). I immediately went to another athletic facility and decided to go with them because of how horrendous my first time was here.

You are getting access to quite a bit. Group exercise classes, fitness classes, multiple pools, multiple tennis courts, childcare. The equipment needs to be updated. You can't read the weights of the kettle bells. Equipment gets rotated for classes so you may not have access to everything all the time. I would like to see more classes in the late afternoon or on the weekends.

The tennis staff is terrible. Two of the coaches, were extremely unprofessional and rude to me. Also one was making rude comments because I normally play at Francoβs but was doing a clinic at PAC. Mind you, Iβm a teenager and this man was a fully grown adult. I havenβt been back since because I had to deal with this manβs extremely uninviting manners when playing at PAC for my tennis team. I highly recommend Francoβs over PAC in terms of the tennis environment because the coaches at Francoβs are way more friendly and itβs a much more inviting atmosphere there.

I was a guest on my sisters account because of family being in town. I have an autistic nephew who was trying to order food. I walked up as he was ordering and he knew what he wanted and his account number. He always gets the same thing. The very rude cashier didn't know we were together and preceded to question him about his number and order until I said is everything ok. It was awkward. My only regret is that I didn't stick up for my nephew right then, although I do believe that if I hadn't been there this guy would've gotten away with bullying a kid that just wanted a pizza. Shame on him!

The "Culture" there is toxic towards members! The GM encourages staff to report Any words/ acts by members to the GM who requires members to meet with him before working out again! This culture is destructive to members! You are treated like elementary school kids. My experience has been has been changed about the club! Back to Franco's for a more mature management philosophy!!

I was going as a guest on my brothers corporate membership while on business. They questioned me like I was lying when I walked in. Them said ok, fill this out and it's fine. I went out my things away in the locker room and this lady comes after me as I'm getting on the elliptical. She starts talking really loud, and questioning me again. I had never been in the club before so this was a bad impression. I actually own a TITLE BOXING CLUB in Lafayette la and I take customer service very seriously. It costs the club nothing to let me use the equipment, but the reputation is far more expensive. I felt so embarrassed and so uncomfortable. I always let my members bring a guest FREE of charge when they are visiting. It's how you keep your members happy and provide good customer service, which is something this gym needs a lesson in. I was so uncomfortable...it shook me up a bit. We are thinking of moving here and opening up a club, and I would never recommend or send anyone to this place. A very cold and uninviting vibe. I'm so disappointed and disgusted by how unwelcoming they were to a new guest. I will NEVER step foot in that place again.

I have been a member of Pelican Athletic Club since 2002 and will never leave! I've experienced everything PAC has to offer from the huge weight room, cardio machines, yoga, exercise classes, personal trainers, physical and massage therapist, (my son has experienced) swim lessons, mother's day out, PP-K program and summer camp and all has been a great experience. Staff is very personable and very friendly. At the moment my son who is 4 years old is in swim lessons. He started off with Kendra in a group class and then moved to a private lesson with Marion. He has turned into a little fish and I have Marion and Kendra to thank. PAC has been a great place to call our 2nd home.

I have been going to PAC for over one year now, having previously been a member of Franco's. I am proud to say that Pelican welcomed me into their senior program (YES -Young Energetic Seniors) from my first day and I have not regretted one day since. The leader of our group, Kathy Mahoney, not only leads us through our series of exercises on the circuit training equipment, but also schedules a series of events throughout the year for us to participate in. Whether it is travel, a luncheon, or a seminar, everything is first class, well-planned, and at a very reasonable cost.YES members quickly become friends and share lunches as well as after exercise coffee to discuss our own life experiences. It is not uncommon for us to have over 25 members participating in our group. Kathy takes the time to get to know everyone and keeps members informed about the group. I am also very pleased to see the general manager, Bobby Shaw, engaging with club members on a daily basis to learn how he can improve activities at the club. Thanks to Kathy and Bobby for making my membership at Pelican an ongoing positive experience.

Have been a member of PAC's Young Energetic Seniors group for 3+ years. Best place to be. The exercise each morning is great but the socializing is even greater!
Kathy Mahoney makes everyone feel welcome and goes over and above what is needed. There are many trips and activities planned. Some are held on the facility premises such as a monthly birthday celebration, a Saints Tailgate Party, a Mardi Gras Party and seminars on various topics. Kathy plans day trips (eg: the race track, the Angola rodeo, the Abbey in Covington), overnighters (Natchez, Natchitoches, Paragon Casino, NO Cooking School), and an occasional week long trip - this year we went to Florida (Jacksonville, Amelia Island, St Augustine) next year to San Antonio. We have a weekly lunch bunch on Wednesday, Christmas parties, and we celebrate some very occasions. I am originally a "city girl" but now live in a very rural part of Franklinton. I love all the friends I have made at PAC and am grateful for the friendship and work that Kathy puts out to make our group so much fun.
