Oil is to the Tin Woodman as Gyrotonics is to the middle aged and up body. Gyrotonics, as far as I can gather based on 15 weeks of experience, is geared toward creating a critical awareness of how the parts of your body move as a whole. And it does this through a unique form of stretching, which is very spine-oriented, and strengthening techniques, that focus on the upper body and the legs. The result is a command of personal movement, increased strength and physical awareness that significantly strengthens the mind body connection.

Gyrotonics is a word that sounds like science and I am convinced that it is. The founders of Freeport Mind-Body Fitness know way too much about how to make the body move most efficiently for it not to be a science.

But the founders – Kyung-sun and Dylan – are also both former dancers. Successful dancers that have performed around the world with a variety of companies. So the experience of Gyrotonics is also the experience of art. Kyungsun and Dylan understand the relationship between body and movement both scientifically and artistically. The result is a slight re-imagining of self because over time, you learn to move differently into the world. And that is …extraordinary.

I have had the privilege of working with Dylan over these past weeks. In addition to bringing an extensive wealth of knowledge about the body and all of its musculature to the session, he is an astute observer. One of the strengths of Gyrotonics is that while it clearly has a foundational philosophy to it, it’s a system that is designed to mold around you, and not the other way around. Under Dylan’s sensitive eye, he builds the exercises around me and what he sees as needing strengthening or is off-center or misaligned. And he does it with joy, compassion and focus.

I go first thing every Monday morning. I, like the rest of the world, used to dread Monday mornings. Now, I can’t wait.

Kyung-sun is an outstanding guide! Her ability to physically articulate the movements she is instructing is striking. I leave class with new pathways communicating information from body to mind, exercised in ways I have not experienced before because of the deep intelligence, moving from the core and the spine - radiating outward. Class ends and I am more aware of each step and move I make. Kind, clear, & so knowledgeable - Kyung-sun is a masterful teacher.

I have been working with Kyung-Sun for over a year with sessions and group classes after being referred to her. I am a fairly active person but had been dealing with an ongoing lower back and pelvic floor issue for a few years. I had practiced yoga, gone to a chiropractor and had energy work. All provided some relief for a while but never solved the issue. Within a couple sessions with Kyung-Sun, I had relief. I was hooked. Kyung-Sun is a kind, compassionate teacher who encourages gentle movement using Gyrotonic techniques to strengthen the body. It is a gentle, but effective discipline focusing on the pelvic floor, spine and breathwork. I have practiced yoga for years and done some Pilates. It has some of crossover but it is also different. The Gyrotonic principles teach how to keep our body safe while stretching and building strength in a gentle way. It takes a while to get the movements but once you get it you can go deeper and learn more about yourself and your body. The studio is growing and very welcoming for all abilities. Private sessions, classes, workshops and occasional master teacher classes are available. I cannot thank Kyung-Sun enough for her knowledge, compassion and encouragement. I look forward to continuing the journey and getting stronger gently.

I'm 73 and I feel like Gyrotonics is the best thing I've ever done to keep me mobile and in shape. Kyung-sun leads me through the exercises and Dylan Newcomb is working with me on balance and weights. I've tried many different ways to exercise and this is it for me. This is better than the pilates that I did for over ten years. I'm very grateful they opened up in Freeport. You couldn't ask for a better fitness studio..

I am addicted to Gyrotonics, and it has as much to do with my coaches as it does with how good my body feels after a full hour. I have studied with Kyung-sun in the past and now I’m with Dylan. Both are extraordinary, trained as dancers, as was the Romanian founder of Gyrotonics. How to describe it—one way might be to say Gyrontonics with Dylan combines the release and contract movements of someone like Martha Graham with the fluid movements of swimming and Vinyassa Flow in an effort to work out the kinks here and there in my back and hips and everywhere else. Dylan --and Gyrotonics generally-- understands the body as it moves through space—every muscle, every joint, every bone in symphony. Yet it’s so much more. When I walk out of a session, I’m taller, stronger, happier and my movements more fluid. Also, just want to say, it’s good for the young and, in my case, it’s even better for the old.

I have been practicing gyrotonics with Kyung-sun for over 6 years. During that time, I have eliminated my back pain and become stronger and more flexible.
Most recently, our sessions focused on preparing me for hip replacement surgery. The all inclusive, holistic approach (core, pelvic, upper and lower body) enabled me to not only prepare for but also to recover more quickly following my surgery.
Unlike physical therapy, each session focuses on what's going on with my body and we adapt the exercises accordingly.
I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to continue to practice with Kyung-sun at Freeport Mind-body Fitness/Gyrotonic Studio.

I am an "older" client of Freeport Mind-Body Fitness/Gyrotonics and it has absolutely changed and improved my life! Initially I joined Freeport Mind-Body Fitness instead of going to PT for a pinched nerve that was causing significant chronic pain. The opportunity to work one-on-one with an instructor for almost an hour twice a week increased my strength and flexibility, and taught me techniques to improve pain management. Now I enjoy the Duo class with a friend, and know that if/when I need a one-on-one session that it is always available to me. Gyrotonics will change/improve your life, too!!!
